Greg Bishop of the NY Times talked to Bart Scott about Hard Knocks, and his answer might have encapsulated concerns about HBO doing Hard Knocks.
“I want training camp to remain pure and original,” Scott said. “I want people to behave the way they normally behave. We all have our part in expanding the game, and I understand that. But I don’t like environments that are forced.”
I get that this is a boon to fans, but for players it’s another matter entirely. A locker room leader like Bart Scott is going to be about purity, and not adding forced elements into the equation. I can see why he’d be concerned that adding HBO cameras could taint their tone, preparation, and ability to bond. Scott has that pure “us versus everyone” mentality, and it’s clear he has concerns about Hard Knocks effecting that.
As great as it is for the Jets exposure, with HBO cameras crawling all over the complex, there’s going to be a tendency for some of the younger guys to not get that. We understand where Scott is coming from and hope that the team’s leaders and especially Rex Ryan will be sensitive to that.

just be yourself bart and there should be no problems

Rex, Bart and the rest of the team leaders need to leverage this to their advantage. Every team on their schedule is going to be watching Hard Knocks this year.
What better way to unleash complete psychological warfare then to ignore the cameras as much as possible and show the world a team more focused and unified than any other team in Hard Knocks history?
I say, they close the ranks, take an almost adversarial approach toward the HBO folks and have the NFL cowering in fear of the modern day Spartan army the Jets could become.
-
Just don’t mention bounties or anything that leads to tampering charges and I’ll be thrilled.
I’m interested to see what HBO does regarding the Ghost. Whether he has been relevant or not ,a bust at the #6 pick is always a story.
-
I was also worried about this. Last year, they went up to Cortland to get away from all distractions and to facilitate team bonding. Rex should instruct them to ignore the cameras as much as possible during practice, maybe allocating a specific time each day that the players can have a little fun with it.
-
It’s called editing….. I think HBO chose the Jets because they will be some real characters in the locker room. I say just do your thing and let HBO deal with it.
Besides HBO follows some 3rd string scrub the whole time anyway.
-
Ironic that Bart is voicing concerns because he’ll likely be one of the stars. Maybe Rex will have Ainge wear a dress and have a Bundchen centerfold on his back when he runs the scout team for the 1st defense.
-
At least Hollywood is gone, for Kerry HBO cameras would’ve been a major distraction; hopefully not so much for Braylon…it would be great if they could morph Rex into “KSK Rex” and then HBO can use cartoon segments!
Bart is right that the team leaders will need to make the young ones know they’ve got to be themselves, and not punks, and keep it real.
-
I’ll bet Rex finds a way to take the pressure off the guys as always.
-
Call me selfish… but I don’t care how the team handles it. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to get inside the locker room of my favorite sports team. If the cameras have an impact on the season, than the problems weren’t the cameras to begin with. I think as a player id feel inspired by the opportunity to document the beginning of a life changing season.
-
JF4L –
I still maintain that there is no difference between KSK Rex and the real Rex and assume that “Hard Knocks” will only bear this out.
Can’t wait for the first time at camp when “DOOR FLIES OPEN”
-
R in CT – expect that you’re right, excepting that he’s going to have trouble downing an entire bronco with the lap band, guess he’ll just have to chew it up real good!
-
This was my concern from the first time I heard about this. I hope they still have camp in Cortlandt, because I think it really helped bond the team lsat year.
-
“DOOR FLIES OPEN”
Rex Ryan – how the f#$k we doing boys, its time to KILLLLLLLLLLL!!!
-
I have concerns but I’m with NJets. As a fan, what more could you want. It should be fun.
-
I agree ..anyone seen this show? not a lot of editing .. I hope this doesn’t blow up in our face ?
-
I for one am thrilled about this. I only caught the Bengals Hard Knocks but even HBO managed to give Marvin Lewis a little bit of personality.
I think maybe in the beginning it’ll be weird but these guys play in front of cameras every Sunday, not to mention the fact that they have cameras in the locker rooms pre and post game for Inside the NFL. I’m sure eventually the cameras will be an afterthought and they’ll just be themselves, for better or worse.
-
I’m looking forward to being completely surprised by a player after finally getting a behind the scenes look at him. I just remember with the Cowboys’ 2nd Hard Knocks, the whole time I was wondering where the hell my boy Marion the Barbarian was. They never showed him. I figured it was because he was off in the jungle sharpening arrowheads and oiling his dreads in preparation for the season. Then one episode, BAM they finally show Barber and he’s sitting in his apartment by himself, in a wife beater, playing the piano. And the first thought that popped into my head was “damn, this guy is a straight up enigma.”
-
Wow, reality TV contributed to the death of Woody Johnson’s daughter and he whores himself to this nonsense. What a hypocrite. Anything to sell PSLs.
-
Always nice to see the Jets will stay in the Giants’ shadow. Think Mara would allow this? Class v. Classless. eerily like Mets v. Yankees.
-
Adam_Schefter
First of the Jets five episodes on HardKnocks is Wednesday, Aug. 11 from 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT. -
Class v Classless?
What does that have to do with anything?
-
Anyone who thinks NFL players are phased by having cameras around can crawl back into the whole they came from. If anything, the Jets will use this to their advantage.
I mean, look at me… I’m supposed to be working but instead I’m messing around on another blog site. You think I’d be doing this if my boss had a camera on me?!
This is gonna be so much fun. -
This is everyones concern….The exposure, cameras, and spotlight on the Jets getting to their head.
I think this is what Rex is all about. Being the center of attention and backing it up. I do not see this being a problem. Rex and the Jets put a target on their back at the end fo the season last year and suprised everyone with a big playoff run.
-
CM?
I didnt realize that diabetes was related to reality TV and the death of a 21 year old girl who had drug issues?
The onyl thing classless was your comment
-
CM.
“reality tv contributed to the death of Woody Johnson’s daughter”?What was she run over by the TMZ van?!
I don’t know what NFL fan besides you has yet to see Hard Knocks, but it’s no more a reality tv program than sports center. And the Giants would be the last team on earth anyone would want to showcase, THAT’s why they weren’t asked to do the show. Since when did Giants fans get the idea their team could be considered “classy” anyway?! From your coach who you try so hard not to dispise, to your players coming in and out of federal prison, now you’re regularly dominated by the friggin Eagles and it’s time to consider what is happening to your organization as they symbolically demo the Giants Stadium sign. Sorry buddy, but your days in the sun are over, and nobody misses you. -
Its going to be Bart’s job to police training camp, that is a part of why the Jets brought him in, to change the mentality…
I was watching Hard Knocks last night and the show is basically about the head coach, his staff, the bubble rookie’s and a few loud veterans who dont even need training camp to begin with
Camera’s from news stations and NFL Films are PACKED INTO training camp anyway, a few more from HBO isnt going to make a difference
-
The NFL is pure entertainment anyway, so I do not see much of a difference. The sports part is secondary to the entertainment.
-
No matter what pathetic attempt the jets do to sell psls or get publicity we will never be in the sun until we win a superbowl.
-
I used to produce documentaries, and also worked for a while as a photographer. And I can tell you that when people are being recorded and/or photographed on an ongoing basis (a period of hours, let alone days), it doesn’t take very long to forget that the camera is there.
In other words, in the beginning, you might be conscious of being recorded. But after hours and hours of the cameras rolling, most people just relax back into themselves.
-
RJF- we get it you want a superbowl, we all do too, but B*tching about it isn’t going to help. Just support your damn team .
-
You know, for all the talking he does and though he can be a little bit inconsistent, I really like Bart’s leadership and no-nonsense approach. Despite him being a character, I get the feel he wants to win, and wants to win BADLY. Anyone with his talent level but more importantly motivation level is welcome on my favorite team any day.
-
One more thing:
HBO is saying that they’re going to be filming the Jets “25 hours a day.” Which means the cameras are going to be on all the time. In that kind of situation, it would be difficult for most people to play to the cameras. Which seems to be the concern of Bart Scott.
When you’re being filmed continuously, hour after hour, day after day, most people just can’t remain self-conscious for that extended period of time, and usually just forget that the cameras are there.
So Bart shouldn’t be all that worried about people not behaving the way they normally behave.
-
the worst case senario is that 1 of the players gets sooooo irritated he attacks 1 of the camera guys…then gets suspended for the year for hitting a civilian…not a laughing matter but it would be funny though if it happens…just my thoughts…
-
reality jet fan – “we will never be in the sun until we win a superbowl.”
I know 1969 was a long time ago, but the Jets did win SB III.
Another win would be the best, but keep in mind that 14 of 32 NFL teams don’t even have one SB win. So, in ‘reality’ there’s a lot more ‘sun’ around the Jets than you may think.
-
In new york. I dont care what any dreamer writes on this site we will never pass the giants until we win the superbowl
-
RJF,
Thats true. But to be honest idc if we are the BIGGEST team in NY as long as we are the BEST team in NY.
-
The Jets have a dark cloud over them, because like the Mets they’re NY b in their sport. It happens when the other franchise gets championships. NY is a tough town. There have to be at least a million sports writers judging ever little detail. Otherwise I think the Jets have had a decent franchise, other than the Kotite era, there have been some good teams.
I can’t imagine cherring for another FB team.
-
Dylan ofcourse thats the idea. But what i am saying is the next 3 years we go 10 and 6 and the gmen go 9 and 7 i could care less. Ithink the only way to pass them for a period of time is a sb.
-
Who is talking about cheering for another team?
-
HBO is not making the show, they’re broadcasting it. NFL Films is making the show: their crews, their editors, writers, whatever, led by Steve Sabol. For your information NFL Films is a “PUBLIC RELATIONS TOOL of the NFL”. I know, I worked for them for 2 years. They are not going to hurt the league or the franchise. No other entity will have the same access NFL Films has because they are employees of the NFL and the NFL has the last word, not HBO, that is if they want to continue to have free access to the NFL. It is a symbiotic relationship, neither will embarrass the other. Someone said it’s all entertainment. What if key injuries hurt this team this year? We’ll still have pictures of the birth of the season before Rex blew his diet.
-
Only kidding Rex, I hope.
-
simplysimon2-
Good point, and one that makes Hard Knocks unlike any other reality show on TV, in that it’s NOT about embarrassing its subjects. It’s about PROMOTING them.
Which means that there’s even less of a chance of this show being a distraction for the team.

Had not forseen this problem. maybe HBO will hide their cameras
