As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: UCLA product, Brian Price [via Michael M.]

Projected Round: First
Measurables: Stands at 6’2. Weighs in at 300 lbs.
Positives: Price is a dominant pass rusher who has a wide variety of moves that he can utilize to get pressure in the back field. His motor is constantly on the move. Price can trip up a RB from behind and has no issue running in the tackle box. He can get off the ball quickly and recognize plays equally fast. Although he isn’t a space eater like Big Jenks, he will make plays in the backfield. He has a big and powerful upper body accompanied by great tackling techniques. Price can be moved around on defense due to his athleticism.
Negatives: Price lacks a lot of strength in the lower half of his body and accounts for many of his drawbacks. He fails to shed blocks well and he will often remain locked in with a blocker if he doesn’t get the initial advantage (by using his quickness).
The Bottom Line: While Price may not be a huge space eater like Jenkins or “Mount” Cody, he will certainly put forth the effort to stop the offense. He seems like a Rex Ryan guy to me and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tanny display some interest in Price on draft day.

I like this kid so much better than Oldrick.
-
He’s short and wide though. He isn’t a DE.
-
heard he was a much better fit in a 4-3
-
The guy is a BEAST all the reason why the JETS should trade DOWN. (if possible) Especially if Graham and the TCU kid isn’t alvailable. Guys like this are going to be faliing left and right because it is just to much talent out there. Draft Reshad Jones and this guy and whatever else on offense and hope to get A. Thomas.

YO AKA DREW
You and I were quoted on a New Orleans newspaper website this season for talking junk to Saints fans…

My wife googled my name and told me about it…pretty funny article
-
6-2 is short? And why isn’t he a DE? He looks like one to me, seems to play like one too.
-
Brian Price is going to be one hell of a football player…and I dont like UCLA football guys, they are soft, but Price broke the mold
-
jets4life,
He is. He’s short and stocky he is an ideal 4-3 DT not 3-4 DE.
-
ramble
I think Brendan meant short for a 3-4 DE as they usually run anywhere from 6’4-6-6′ even giants like Aaron Smith are like 6’7-6’8
-
Drew,
I like him better than Odrick also, but I harp on Odrick because I believe we have a chance for him at 29. We do not have a chance for Price at 29 unless we move up.
I see no point wishing for a player we have no chance in getting. At #29, Odrick is entirely possible, and will be a good player for us.
-
It never stopped Dwight Freeney.
-
He’s not 6’2 he’s 6’1. He’s a short and stocky DT. 3-4 DE’s are taller guys (Ellis, Pouha, Devito, Potty are all 6’3+). Price’s body type is more suited for NT but he isn’t big enough to play there. 4-3 DT all the way with this guy.
-
ramble,
Freeney plays 4-3 DE. 3-4 DE is a completely different animal.
Eddie that is what I meant, thanks.
-
Eddie,
I hear what you are saying, I just never like to discount a player because he doesn’t have ideal height, wieght, or whatever else.
All I know is i’d love to have this guy on our team lining up next to Jenkins and Ellis!

How can you compare Freeny to Price. Freeney is a 4-3 pure rush DE who has unreal speed, quickness and agility for the position
Price is stumpy, 6-2 300 lbs DT in a 4-3. And it would stop him because as a 3-4 DE you have to have longer arms to set the edge on the run, you cant just knife in a penetrate like a 3 technique can in a 4-3
-
It’s not a completely different animal! It’s football, and you can either play or you can’t. DE’s whether 3-4 or 4-3 still line up against OL tackles and have to perform.
Price can absolutely play DE in the 3-4.
-
ramble,
Are you serious? Dwight Freeney plays 3-4 DE and he gets absolutely demolished. He plays WILL in a 3-4. You switch to a 4-3 and Price plays DT. They’re not the same animal because in the same defense they would never, ever, ever play the same position.
-
Brendan,
Are you going to tell me that teams that play the 3-4 will pass on Brian Price?
-
Price is 300 lbs right now…I willing to bet that at some point during his career that he gets up to around 320-330 and he could play nose…
I dont think Casey Hampton is all that big
-
Hampton is 330. If he bulks up he could play NT, but to me his frame looks kind of maxed out. If I were a 3-4 team? No I am not picking him. He is ideal for a 4-3 team looking for a disruptive 4-3 DT to put in the middle.
Could he bulk up and be a good NT? Sure. He has built-in leverage thanks to his frame.
Is he better suited for 4-3 DT? Absolutely.
-
ramble
Yea man I think you are way off base on this one. Price just simply doesnt have the length needed to play 3-4 DE. Freeney and him are an awful comparison, in fact they dont compare at all.
Price may be able to play NT in a 3-4 later in his career as he probably puts on another 25 lbs and gets the man strength
-
Brendan
No you are 100% right on this one. Price screams Tampa 2 DT all the way
-
Eddie,
That’s one of the resaons I’m harping on Jared Odrick, right now he is 305 lbs., he has the frame to get bigger and could easily add 20-30 lbs and move to NT in a couple of years. Right now he would absolutely fill a need at DE for us.
-
I’ve never read anywhere where Price has been pidgeonholed into one position or another, or one type of defense.
-
ramble
I think Price is a guy who could start right away in a 4-3. If a 3-4 team drafted him, it would take him some time to develop as he couldnt just step in and play nose like the Jenks, Hamptons and Shaun Rogers of the world.
But you are right in the fact that this kid is going to be a good player, and if he gets that extra weight that men get as they head towards 30, and some “man strength” as well, he could develop into a nose with the right coaching and scheme
-
I’ve said this multiple times this offseason, but I don’t know how much of a need for a DE there really is for this team.
Remember Rex carries usually 5 DL at most.
Jenks, Ellis, Pouha & Devito are locks. Jenks is the best DT in the game when healthy. Ellis is the most underrated and productive 3-4 DE in football. Pouha and Devito are not just “depth guys” as most people label them. They both played a LOT this year for the majority of the season. They both showed talent and ability to be real 3-4 contributors.
That 5th spot I would like see go to Ropati Pitoitua (practice squad most of last year). He’s HUGE (6’8 310 lbs.) and just mauls people. He lacked technique coming out of college, but got more reps as the season went on.
This “need” isn’t as much of a need as people think. Not when Rex regularly takes late round and undrafted DL and turned them into studs.
-
ramble
I think Odrick too. My concern on him is twofold
1- Seems to lack technique in shedding blockers. Doesnt use moves instead he just throws people out of the way. That works in college, does not work in the NFL. Big Ten guys scare me when they dont play with good technique
2- Other than Suh, who is impossible for the Jets to get, there is no other DT/ DE that yells Haloti Ngata. I dont see Rex investing a high pick on a player in that mold unless he fits the Ngata prototype…
I think before we address the interior D Line, we need another guy on the edge to rush the QB…I want Hughes, but as of right now, it seems more likely Greg Hardy or Ricky Sapp is that type of guy for the Jets…I would also like another speedy man to man corner to match up against the teams like Indy and New England who spread it out and want to play basketball vs us…Golden Tate is the only WR Id take at 29
However, there is a lot more good than bad with Odrick and as it was posted today, the Jets are interested…and if Rex thinks he can be that guy, Im on board dude
-
Brendan,
I agree about Jenkins being the best NT when healthy. The big “if” is, when healthy. Jenkins has yet to play a full season for us.
You won’t realize how important having good DL players is until we get run on. I dread not being able to control the line of scrimage more that anything else!
IMO the 3-4 is all predicated on the DL. I am just not as high on Devito or Pitoitua as you are.
-
Brendan
That exactly it. In fact, you were the one who brought it to my attention
Unless a guy can do what Ngata does…Rex isnt going to spend a high pick on him. In fact, Rex would rather have a veteran guy like the Trevor Pryce or Shaun Ellis’ of the world or huge late rd converted 4-3 DT’s to fill that spot.
For him to pick a guy that high, he has to be special…Haloti Ngata special and I dont see that guy either
-
Eddie,
The thing about Odrick that keeps sticking with me is what his coached at PSU say about him…
“he is both the toughest and funniest guy on the field”. I want him on my team.
-
ramble…We had Jenks for 6 1/4 game last year. The rest of the year Devito and Pouha were the main reasons the defense didn’t crumble (in terms of rush defense). They are both above average against the run, and if you go to Pro Football Focus they rated them both in the top 10 DTs for the year.
-
i dont see us taking a DL early in the draft but i would not rule it out. we are a team without a lot of “needs” and that makes us dangerous in the draft because we could take the BPA in stead of reaching to fill a role when the corresponding value is not there. i actually wouldnt mind seeing the team take OL or DL with 1 of its first 2 picks. you can never go wrong with improving the OL/DL. we might not have a screaming need but guys like Faneca, Big Wood, Big Jinx, Ellis and Pouha are not getting any younger.
lastly, we played a lot of defensive snaps in the 46 look (and even 4-3) last year. this kid is obviously not a 3-4 DE, but we dont play a prototypical 3-4 defense so he should not be dismissed
-
I’m just more against taking a defensive lineman in the first round when we know Rex can take any late round guy and make him a starter.
-
brian,
I agree with you although I feel I should point out that while Pouha is old, he’s not “football old”. He was a 26 year old rookie because he went on his Morman mission before joining the team.
-
Bent
Yea I must have missed those posts…Just thought it was funny how the guy made us out to be the bad guys when it was the Saints fans who came over here and started with the Who Dat stuff…
Turns out they were onto to something as the Saints truly deserved and earned the Super Bowl they won
-
Bent
Yea I still think the Jets held the Saints to their lowest offensive output of the season…
Now Im going to give athletes even more of the benefit of the doubt because I personally know what its like to be misquoted!!! l=-)
-
Brendan you are correct. Its a shame people dismiss Pouha and Devito as just role players, when they heavily contributed to our success. Hopefully Pitoitoa can improve and become a starter for us.
But Price definetely screams Tampa-2 DT. I could definetely see Indy possibly trading up for him as they haven’t had a player hold down the inside for quite some time.
You guys remember that season when the Colts won the SB, and they had that horrid run defense! They all looked like they were on rollerskates
-
Great prospect, but not interested though.

I’m a UCLA fan, I’ve seen nearly every game the guy has played, hes an absolute stud. He was like a mini Kris Jenkins last year. The only question is whether or not he can transition to the 3-4.
