While I agree with Tierney’s thought that the team should go after an end, I think Tierney means the 3-4 Defensive End. The run stuffing, in the trenches beasty type.
While the Jets do need a shot in the arm when it comes to their pass rush, Eamon McAnaney is talking about Brandon Graham or Ricky Sapp as Defensive Ends, which they would be in a base 4-3. Sapp and Graham are more the OLB type in the Jets defense.
Based on the salaries right now allocated between Pace, Thomas and Gholston, I wonder if that’s what the team will prioritize in the draft … no matter how well Gholston projects (or doesn’t project) … at least for 2010. It basically doesn’t make financial sense for the team to try and cut Gholston until after the 2010 campaign, he’s a sunk cost from a salary perspective.
Successive rounds, sure, go for a DE-OLB type, but right now, the team has a hole at 3-4 DE that needs filling. To that end, the Jets need a 6’4″+ 285+ End/Tackle hybrid guy, not a 6’3″-ish 260-ish guy who can be pushed off the ball by a much larger Offensive Tackle.
Then again, I’m always wrong when it comes to assessing what the Jets will do going into the draft. So be sure to watch the Jets draft an OLB …

Jets top 5
1 brandon graham olb
2 sergio kindle olb
3 jerry Hughes olb
4 jared odrick de
5 golden Tate wr -
I’d flip hughes and Kindle, but that sounds good to me.
-
First thing, they have to sign Marques Douglas. Then, I agree with you, Bassett, we need to get younger and healthier in the trenches. The tougher we are on the line, the more effective Pace, Thomas, and Gholston can be.
-
Yeah I would prefer Douglas back. Our D-line has Pouha, Devito and Potty that are young (Pouha is old in real age but young in football years) but obviously more players needed to be infused to transition from old to young guard. Late picks and UDFA’s are the way to go on a 3-4 DL with a guy of Rex’s ability leading the way, IMO.

jets top 5 right here:
1.) Jared Odrick
2.) Jerry Hughes
3.) Sergio Kindle
4.) Brandon Graham
5.) Dez Bryant/Demarius Thomas -
I don’t care who we draft in the first round – I’m confident it will be on the defensive side of ball. I’m also confident it will be a good player. However, the player need to get is the running back from Stanford Gerhardt. Together with Greene we could have a talented backside for years. He is powerful, fast, has good hands, he’s smart and should be available in the second round. We need to get Gerhardt – it would do wonders for Sanchez.

@ Bassett
I have followed TJB for years but have only started commenting here over the past few weeks. The reason for this is that for the first time the team has a coaching staff I can get behind. My whole life I have been a huge Buddy Ryan and Marty Schottenheimer fan to the point where it’s borderline nerdy. I have studied their schemes (from playbooks available online as well as coaching and other books). The reason I mention this is that this site like no other site actually provides usefull insight into potential moves the team will make.
Specifically about the draft, the backgrounds provided on prospects has been much better then some “professionals” (see espn’s McShay (cough)). While it’s clearly obvious what the team needs are, between our owners habits (bringing in flash to help sell PSLs) and Rex’s habits and Tanny’s habits (trading at every corner) it is nearly impossible to get an accuarate read on what the team might do.
if one was to focus on Rex’s habits (drawing on what happened with the ravens) for a second there is an avenue that has been discussed breifly on this site but never with great detail. That is come draft day the Jets trade not for a different draft pick but for a current player? The reason i say this might be a Rex habit is now two years ago the ravens traded for Fabian Washington on draft day after talking with his brother (DC of the raiders at the time) Also many of Rex’s d in baltimore were guys the team aquired during the offseason. The biggest names being Pryce, The goose (even though he was aquired while Rex was just the Dline coach). The point is with the team clearly in win now mode and the fact the team has already looked at guys like Travis Laboy, the player from Canadia both were current players. Do you believe that come draft day our first round pick could go not for a draftee but for a current playermaker already in the NFL?

1. Jared Odrick
2. Brian Price
3. Brandon Graham
4. Golden Tate
5. Jerry HughesPart of me wants McCourty, RU alum but its not what we really, really need.
-
WR In The First Round ? no if it aint Dez Bryant I dont want him.
If DEZ Doesn’t Fall, Im thinking best D Linemen at 29. and get Greg Hardy in the later rounds.
I think Come draft Day if D-E-Z isn’t in Green and White Mt. Cody will. -
Brendan,
The only problem with waiting til the later rounds to fill a DE need is that you will never find a Richard Seymour type in the later rounds. IMO, we need a RS type of DE to round out our D.
Not to sound like a broken record, but this is why I think Odrick is the right pick for us.
-
Why are the reluctant to try Gholston at DE?
-
Sergio Kindle is version BIG 12 Gholston
-
Round 1 Mt Cody
Round 2 Dexter McCluster
Later Rounds Mr. T fills in the OLB/DE -
1. Brandon Graham
2. Jerry Hughes
3. Taylor Mays
4. Jared Odrick
5. Demaryius Thomas -
it seems that they plan to draft a de, they haven’t resigned douglas, so now we have ellis, devito, and ripotti?(tall guy), and it is the most rotated position on the roster, odrick makes sense and should be there at 29, if leon goes for a 2nd or 3rd round pick use that on gerhart, and the other second on reshad jones, shipley or a slot receiver should be around in the 4th, i still hope they resign douglas though
-
I will say it until I turn blue….The Jets do not need to address 3-4 DE in round 1.
Ryan does need need a bigtime DE to have a dominant defesne. He builds his defesne through his DT, LB and CB….. He had a bunch of no name DE’s for almost all of his years in Baltimore.
There are plenty of guys in the mid rounds that Ryan can use to add depth to the DE’s on our team.
-
^does not need a
-
“Whom should the Jets draft,” not “Who…” C’mon now…
-
Drew,
We’ll just have to agree to disagree. lol
-
J Roc Gholston is a OLB in the 34. They throw in alot of four man fronts and he’ll play DE then. It looks like he is better on the line, if he can fatten up they should put him at DE.
-
Drew he had Haloti Ngata.
-
JakeG,
For 2 seasons. He ran that defensive line for a LONG time before that and he never needed an all-star. The Jets DO NOT need to address DE early in the draft. Rex carries 5 DL’s, 6 at most. Jenks, Ellis, Pouha, Devito, Potty are 5. If they resign Douglas that’s 6. If they draft one they’re at 6 or 7. Plus you have Gholston most likely moving to DE so now you’re at 7 or 8. It’s already a VERY crowded unit by Rex’s standards. Get a pass rusher for the love of all that is holy and have yourself the best defense in football again.
-
to tell you the truth i highly doubt that the jets are going to draft a de/dt with their 1st round pick.
would graham or hughes be great? yes. but right now it doesnt look like its a glaring need. to us it is because we saw what this defense would look like without jenkins in. think about rex and tanny’s mindset… we’re getting jenkins back, devito proved he could be very valuable and could potentially take the starting job, if gholston fattens up and adds like 20-25 more pounds of muscle he could share time with devito, pouha did a great job at nose last year and could probably produce similarly at an end as well. if anything the jets will trade down before they take a de/dt. as someone else said, i think it was drew, rex has never really had big name tackles. he builds his team through the nose, linebackers, and secondary. anything else is gravy.
with that being said i see the jets looking at only 1 of 2 positions.
1) Safety. They’ll either go big for Berry or draft someone like Reshad Jones.
2) Slot Receiver. I hate to say it lantern but i dont think the Jets are going to trade up for Bryant. If he falls in their laps at 29 then its a no brainer, but he wont. He’ll presumably be taken in the mid teens to early 20′s. At the very worst he’s going to end up in Jerry Jones’ lap. Expect Golden Tate to be a Jet if they can’t trade up for Berry. If Golden Tate is gone as well then expect the Jets to trade down.If however, they do that trade with Oakland before the draft, and Berry is off the board, expect the Jets to draft a de/dt, like Dan Williams. Someone who can step in at nose as well if Jenkins was to get injured yet again. Then expect them to draft the slot receiver, and then finally they will draft a safety in the later rounds, hoping to get a player similar to rhodes. For the record im hearing Taylor Mays is slipping and at the very least he could fall into early 2nd round. Just something to keep an eye out for.
-
J Roc,
First of all, Gholston is soft, second he is soft!
Draft the best player available.
-
I think people are blowing the need for a WILL way out of proportion to other needs. First of all, we were missing Calvin Pace for 4 games to start last season and when he came back he was a solid pass rusher. Second of all, we currently DO NOT HAVE a starting DE opposite Ellis whereas we do have Bryan Thomas and Pace at OLB. As much as I’d like a skill player, I think that happens after the first 2 rounds are done and both lines receive a much needed youth boost. Football is all about controlling the lines and we need more young bodies to do that on both ends of the ball (Faneca was awful in pass protection last year).
Therefore my top 5 on the Jets board are:
1. Jared Odrick
2. Mike Lupati
3. Maurkice Pouncey
4. Brian Price
5. Tyson Alualu -
VJF,
Pace plays the SAM not the WILL. He’s a good pass rusher but he’s going against RT’s and TE’s, not elite pass-blocking LT’s. He’s a good pass rusher, I agree, but he’s not a WILL. It’s not blowing the need out of proportion. The jets still have one of the best DL’s in the league last year even after Jenks went down. Pouha & Devito could easily form an above-average platoon opposite Ellis. Rex plucks DEs out of god-knows-where, he doesn’t need to spend a 1st round pick on a guy to do a job he could have a 6 or 7th rounder, or even an UDFA, do.
-
You must think long term as well peoplezzzzzz
O and D line are crucial to a playoff team.
Take it as a LUXURY that we do not need any O-Lineman now. However there might come a time where we need to burn draft picks on both O-Lineman and D-lineman in the same draft in a few years which can set us back in the skill positions. Lets avoid this NOW by shoring up our D line with young talented players.
Because in a few years if we need to address both sides of the line in the same draft it will set us back.
-
odrick is the next richard seymour…he can play 4-3 dt, and 3-4 de…i would love ot get him…if we trade leon and get a 2nd rd pick, it should go like this
1-odrick
2a-mt cody/jeryy hughes
2b- shipley
4-a safety
5-7-ol/rb/wr -
Brendan, if Gholston can bulk up and move to end then they should get a pass rusher. david harris, bryan thomas is average and FO knew that when they picked Gholston.
-
Gholston was already around 280-285 at the end of last year. He isn’t going to be pushed around and it seems more and more likely that DE is his new position. Harris is an ILB he isn’t a pass rusher. Thomas is not a good pass rusher at all, solid against the run, but he’s a part-time player.
-
Not sure how you know but if that is the case then defensive end isn’t a need like we thought it was.
-
Got to think about replacing Alan Faneca, he ain’t getting any younger. We have to bolster the offense much more than the defense. Let’s take Mike Lupati, we can’t go wrong with that guy.
-
Gholston = Mr. Softee, his name should only be mentioned when they finally release him.
To be a player in this league you have to want to hit people, in 2 years he has proved that he does not like to do that.
-
Jake,
He already played a lot at DE last season and it was reported multiple times that the move is most likely Gholston’s future with the team.
-
The more I think about it I would be happy with Graham, Hughes, Kindle, Kyle Wilson, Mike Iupati or Demaryus Thomas. All of the above would be great picks. Please don’t take Taylor Mays!
-
I agree, WE DO NOT NEED TO TAKE A DE EARLY IN THIS DRAFT. GO PASS RUSHER, NICKLE CORNER, OR GUARD/TACKLE!
-
Brendan if he can pass rush from there or do something and we draft a pass rusher that will go a long way.
-
JakeG
Ngata is a freak and plays both DT and DE. He was drafted inthe first round as a DT though.
Which is why I argue that D Williams is a 100% better prospect than Odrick becasue he can play both DT and DE in out system. Odrick will be a rotation guy outside and basically eat blocks for the next 6 years
-
We have been through this before very few DE’s get to the QB in the 3-4 especailly Rex’s system Even Ngata who plays DE and DT had 1 or 2 sakcs total last year.
I do not believe we should “waste” a 1st round pick on a guy who will basically take on blocks and be a nice run stopper.
These are the guys you find in the mid to late rounds or in Rex’s case UDFA…..DE’s youth is needed but not in rounds 1 or 2.
-
“I do not believe we should “waste” a 1st round pick on a guy who will basically take on blocks and be a nice run stopper.”
Until we get run on, then you will wish we took a bonafide DE like Jared Odrick.
-
Drew brings up a good point about pressure from 3-4 DE spots. They don’t rack up stats (Ellis is the exception, not the rule) but they do collapse the pocket (something Devito, Pouha and even Gholston are good at) and take up blockers.
-
Control the line of scrimage, and you control the game. goes for O and D.
-
Everyone is making good valid points for their arguments so I’ll just add mine to the mix.
I honestly believe that BPA should be the 1st round pick and that could be anyone from Bryant, Iupati, Mays, Odrick, D. Thomas, Wilson or Graham. Anyone esle isn’t worth the pick
So here is my draft for our 7 rounds:
1st round: obviously like I said any of those guys listed above but my pick would be ODRICK because he most likely of all those guys to be there
2nd round: GERHART because it is too early to go FS and we definitely want our 2d round picks to pan out ala Clemens
3rd round: no pick here obviously but you never know with Trader Mike
4th round: I say HARDY from Ole Miss would be steal here even though we selected DE in the first round plus he is athletic enough to move to OLB as a pass rusher so we solve our issue here and has the best of both worlds
5th round: Here is where you get your FS either BURNETT or R. JONES; remember this is where you find those gems and we found Kerry here so this isn’t any different.
6th round: Now here is where we look at addressing a corner or o line maybe you guys can offer suggestions here
7th round: Now here is where we can bring in another wr or lb for special teams purposes
Overall, you guys we address our most important needs and still get that infusion of talent on our d line as needed
-
i think some of you are making odrick out to be this next amazing player. what i’ve heard is that at worst he’ll be decent, and at best he’ll be above average. he is hte safe pick, but tanny doesnt keep it safe does he? he’ll go big or go home.
-
ron,
Reshad Jones would be a steal anywhere in the draft besides the 1st round. He’s gonna be insane.
-
Ramble
The last thing I am worried about is our defense getting run on……This is just more proof to why a DE is not a need early.
Ryan did not have bigtime DE’s for most of his time in Baltimore and they had a great run defense.
We have guys already on our team that provide this pretty well. Plus I am not saying we shouldnt address it in the draft….. just not early and spend 1st day money on that guy.
-
Building on Bent’s comments
all the linebackers moved around, look at the raiders game. pace started on the weakside then moved to the strong side and light up the raiders. Later in the season we saw Scott and Harris coming off the edge. if we do get a new edge rushing LB i totally agree it would make the base alignment Pace – Harris – Scott – Newbie (strong side – weak side) and like you side, we should expect to continue to see different alignments throughout the season.
In baltimore once suggs was drafted he was always on the weak side, the strong side was adilus thomas then Jarrett (currently)
-
Hey guys
you have to stop confusing hybrids in this D. In our D we have 2 types: A) the DE/ OLB hybrid who is about 260, fast, should be a terror of the edge as well as stand up in pass coverage. He will then put his hand in the dirt for other looks 4-3, 46 etc. Pace/ BT/ Gholston are our guys. Pace is very good but not a terror. He basically does everything well and is a super solid Strong side OLB / DE holds up at point on run @ 265/270 and can run with TE’s and some backs. He will also get mismatches against mediocre OL and pass blocking TE’s. I think this year he’s good for 10 sacks. Now BT and Gholston. on the other side are the problem. This shuold be your most feared pass rusher. This is the Old Lawrence Taylor side or the William marshall side in the bears 46. He has to be really dominant . BT is solid, and Gholston was drafted to be that guy. GHolston cannot play DE / DT in our D, consistently. he’snot 280, he’s 265. Plus he’s a muscle bound 265 which meens he’s at his athletic limit, for him to get to 280. he would not carry it well. Does anyone remember when Ellis tried to bulk up to 295 to play DT? 10 added pounds on a guy at his limit is A LOT.
So what’s my point. I think we still need a DE/ OLB hybrid pass rusher but because we have sunk so much into gholston, I think we have to let it play out one more year before we invest another boatload of $ on the same position. My guess is that we will get someone like HARDY in Round 4 for insurance, remember he was the best PR last year but gets hurt a lot and doesn’t play to his potential. Guys like this may figure it out with the right coaching and play to their skills–he has 1st round skills. Also, I think we pick up Adalius before training camp when the stupid patsies release him. I’d rather have AT than BT at that position with gholston and HArdy battling it out.
So that means we don’t draft a OLB/ DE hybrid in rd 1. We draft the other hybrid, the DE/ DT hybrid–an athletic big guy with a huge frame that can man the edge on the run, can slide down to tackle and is quick enough to split gaps, and also can pass rush from both positions. WE need this spot as ellis is 32, we have let douglas go, and only have Devito as a guy with real experience. Devito is solid and a good motor try hard, lunch pail guy but we need a stud. And that typically comes in rd 1-2 so I say we if ODRICK is avail we grab him or if not then in rd 2 – we get ALUALU.
Lastly if ODrick is gone, then I’d either trade out if we could find a partner for a 2 and 3rd or early 4th. IF not then i’d draft Cody. With Cody and Alualu, then HARDY we would be restocked for the next 3 -5 years on the DL as BIG JENK and Ellis move on. BTW a NT is important because it takes rookie NT at least 2 years to play the position. Even NGATA didn’t really excell unitl year 2.
DE/DT HYBRID rd 1-2
-
I like high motor guy’s who wear people out Tyson Alualu is such a guy, he can play inside and outside, he has the attitude of a Mark Sanchez. I just love the guy, if you haven’t seen film on him please do. I believe this guy is going to be special. But in the first round word out is Pouncy is moving into the first round. So I could live with an OL in the first, DE/DL in the second, S in the 4th, RB in the 5th, KR in the sixth, and P in the seventh.
-
Golden Tate should not even be coming up when people mention the Jets. Jared Odrick should be their guy. WR is a secondary issue. 3rd or 4th round. I would look to a Jordan Shipley, Riley Cooper type player. And the final rounds they should fill in their needs based on the best players available that fit their needs
-
Trade Leon for a 3rd.
Offer Elvis Dumervil a contract Denver can’t match (poison pill if you must)
Essentially give up a 1st and Leon for Dumervil
-
I think Jets will go defense first and make a run at Berry. Possible Mr. T “magic” again. If that fails, the Jets will see what “falls” at 29. If Odrick (or one of their top choice recievers are there) they will probably pull the trigger. If they see that the 29 th spot doesn’t bring the “value” they seek then the Jets will trade “down”. If we trade down then Jordan Shipley and Gerhardt would be excellent choices offensively. D. Williams would be a very good choice defensively.
-
i m sure rex will get his man…even if it isnt his 1st choice he will get what he wants in the end…and we’ll all stand behind him…i just cant wait for this draft to be over and done with…
-
Draft Jordan shipley that’s all I’m worried about
-
i understand all u guys about the defense… but think last year our defense did the job it was only because our offense did not score wat they should have… so i think we should get wide out lik thomas or golden tate also lat year we only got one kick return for a td as to the year before tht were we were the nfl number one leadrs in kick returns..so we need a fast guy lik the guys i was talkin bout
-
Emanuel Sanders in the forth would be better then Thomas, Benn, or Tate in the first / Shipley or Gilyard in the second
-
i agree about shipley

Have the Jets held or attended any private work outs besides the ones for Gerhart, Iupati, Ray Fisher, Corey Peteres, Anthony Levine and Anthony Davis?
