As we are a mere 17 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft I’m sure Tannenbaum has this itching feeling to make something big happen. After all it’s always for the good of the team (and the buisness side of things as well). Rich Cimini reports that “league insiders” believe we haven’t heard the last of Tanny.
The Jets have gone three weeks since their last significant player move – the signing of LaDainian Tomlinson. In their world, that’s an eternity, but it doesn’t mean they’re out of tricks.
They’re not planning to go peacefully into the April 22 draft. League insiders believe ever-aggressive GM Mike Tannenbaum may have a surprise or two before the Jets shift into draft mode. Considering the timing – 10 days before the deadline for signing restricted free agents – it’s possible the Jets are preparing to plunge into the RFA market.
That is sure to ratchet up the speculation regarding Brandon Marshall, but league sources continued to maintain yesterday that the Jets aren’t interested in signing or trading for the Broncos wide receiver.
I would think Tannenbaum would be more inclined to make some trades for picks on draft day to try and get ahead in the draft considering its depth. Then again I wouldn’t be surprised if he tries to go after on some RFA’s. As Cimini mentioned the deadline isn’t far off and if they have had their eye on a few that tickled their interest you can bet “Trader” Mike is waiting patiently to pull that trigger.

Hopefully one of those moves is to move up to #10 and snag Dan Williams.
-
I would love to see a move that brought more picks in this draft our way. What about leveraging Leon with a pick from next years draft for multiple picks this year. I worked all last night so I might not be making much sense right now. But this draft is supposed to be much stronger than next years draft.
-
Elvis Dumervil ? Imagine If we could get our Hand on him! Best Defense Ever !!
-
ramble 914……
i’ m with you. i think the jets, thinking that 2011 will be a lock out (even though there will still be a draft, there not going to play!!!) trade their number 1 pick next year to a team that doesn’t want to spend money for their number 1 pick this year…maybe jacksonville, or even oakland (maybe they want to recoup their number one in the seymour deal), and we get dan williams or eric berry. i think we know we need 2 more pieces on defense via a pass rusher, olb/will pass rusher, and another cover/safety.
after that, they will find a slot receiver in the draft and go to war. let’s see what happens. but i wouldn’t be surprised one bit to see that happen. -
i wouldnt mind getting steve breaston…is there anychance of that??
-
This team needs to add more picks and acquire depth, not trade picks away.
-
Alex,
Jacksonville would be the perfect trade partner because it has been reported that Jksnvl would love to draft Tebow, just not at #10, at #29, they would.
Additionally, Miami’s biggest weakness and position of need is NT, especially after they’ve seen our running game last year. If we can swoop in and grab DW at 10, it would totally screw Miami and give us a guy we can plug in right away at the 5 technique spot opposite Ellis, and if/when Jenkins goues down again we already have his repalcement.
-
Either that or stand pat and take Jared Odrick with #29, Rashad Jones at #60, and find a way to move in the top of the third and take Shipley.
-
No need to move up and take Shipley. he’s just going to be an average WR, he’s not that fast. Let’s just stay put in the fourth and hope to steal Emanuel Sanders. Other then that i like your draft, especially if we can move up for DW.
-
Dumervil is tendered a 1st and 3rd right?
-
You have to love Mike Tannenbaum. He makes things happen. I am sure that he will have a surprise or two up his sleeve. It’s just a matter of time, before we make an appearance in the SB.
Having picked up LT, I would like to see us get a 2nd or 3rd round pick for Leon. I loved Leon but, let another team take the chance on him. This draft will have plenty of stars coming out of the third round. In addition, it will give Tanny some ammunition, to move up and get us a stud.
Is it draft day yet?
-
17 days baby!! Then next thing we know it will be OTAs, then camp, then the season, then the playoffs, and THEN, then we shall see our Jets in a Superbowl.
Just think about what would happen if we won it all this year? I can’t imagine it, it’s to amazing.
-
Bigkatt,
Whats this”if” crap, imagine it and live it and yes it will be crazy, it’s been 42 yrs but I still remeber the 1st one.
Even more is the 2014 Superbowl in the Meadowlands , with us in it. Thats a home field advantage!!!
-
I would get that guy that catches 100 balls a year in a New york minute!
-
Marshall, Marshall, Marshall!!!!!
-
Welll League “Sources” did say The Jets aren’t interested in Antonio Cromartie……Look wheres hes at now
-
Hahaha OJF, i already know we’re winning it all this year, it’s pretty obvious we’re the best team in the league, i just didn’t want to sound precocious. And i honestly can’t imagine it, but i’m sure it’s the greatest thing of all time. As a 19 year old Met Jet Knick fan, i’ve been suffering as long as i can remember. I’m going to lose my mind after we win it all.
-
Since I,m60 yr old Jet/Met/Knick fan, Jets and mets since they started, can you even fathom the 12 month stretch i had from Jets in Superbowl Three, Mets in 69, and Willis coming out of the tunnel and leading the Knicks to the NBA Title, and can you imagine how bad a year it was for Baltimore fans being beat in the Superbowl and World Series by NY and knocked out early in the playoffs by the Knicks?
Other than a few blips from the Knicks and Mets it’s been downhill since then, but NOT THIS YEAR FOR THE JETS!!!!!!
-
Wow that must have been incredible. You never know about these next 12-14 months, Johan and the Mats are looking great right now, if LeBron comes to the mecca a championship is soon to follow, and the Jets are poised to start a little dynasty of our own. Knock on wood, but i think the suffering will soon be over!
-
Mets not Mats
-
Since i know it is always changing, what are the Broncos asking for now for Marshall? Do we really believe Tanny isn’t in talks for him?
If we dont trade up in the draft (I couldnt imagine a better situation than swapping with the Jags and snagging Berry) I think we will end up drafting a WR at #29. I just cant fathom us thinking were better off drafting someone like Golden Tate than trading for a proven stud like Brandon Marshall.
Were so close lets keep these moves going! -
I’m a Jets/Mets/Knicks/Rangers fan and a Jets’ Super Bowl victory is definitely no. 1 on my wish list. I was too young to remember ’69 and since then it’s just been playoff pain…3 AFC championship games, twice leading at halftime…BRUTAL!!!! If you count the ABA, the Nets, Knicks, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, Giants, Mets and Yankees have all won championships since 1969! I want the ticker tape parade!!!
-
I’m getting tired of hearing about depth. Give me a team full of great starters with decent depth as opposed to decent starters with great depth.
If there are trades that make sense, I hope Mr T. makes them. At this point, the only RFA I would really want is Dumerville. If the asking price is a first round pick, or even more, do it.
-
I’ve been a Jet fan since I was a kid in 1971 in Namath’s heyday. Saw him play a few times at Shea. So I missed the SB by 3 years and have been suffering ever since: 3 good years (82, 98 and 09) in almost 40 is not cool. I’ve never felt better about the direction we’re heading than right now.
-
Sackdance99,
I too was too young to remember the 1969 SB (have vague memories), I was 7 years old.
We have never been closer than right now! I feel we will be at least playoff contendors for the next several years as long as Tanny keeps getting us the talent like he has been. That includes FA and the draft.
We’re so close I can taste it!
-
JR,
Couldn’t agree more! Trade up and get game changers. Save the depth for FA or UDFA.
-
Ramble,
Yes we are close, but we did get lucky by getting into the playoffs, although we did look like we belonged once we got in, as a long time fan, I can’t get to excited in the off season. The Jets are typically one of the “best ” off season teams in the league.
I have to wait until we actually start playing to gauge how good we will be, after 14 games last year there were not too many fans who thought that we were close to winning a Super Bowl.
We are on the “right” track!
-
Cabras,
in those 14 games what was our weakness? QB. We were pretty dominant in all other phases of the game. So if Sanchez is ready to make some steps this year (even if they are small ones), I dont see how you cant be optimistic.
-
I think some of you guys are getting way too ahead of yourselves with all this we are definitely winning the SB stuff. Of coarse i want to win it but lets be humble about it and just enjoy and appreciate it when it actually does happen. We should know better!
I agree with ramble and jr on getting the best players possible instead of going for depth. There are other ways of getting depth as ramble mentioned.
Dumervil has a 1st and 3rd rd tender, we dont have a 3rd rd pick so it would be our 2nd rd pick that we would have to give up so you can forget about him!
Joe C- I’m with you on going for Marshall. I am a huge fan of his, I’ve been saying that we should get him ever since last year during the playoffs when i found out that he would be a RFA. I would go crazy if they get Golden Tate with the 29th pick, because for that we just get Marshall!
-
Lucky In The Playoffs?
We Beat The Bengals TWICE..Dont see no luck there.
We overmatched The High Powered Chargers Again No Luck There.
And In The Colts Game we had BAD LUCK..Two Injuries to KEY Players! -
Who around here would give up a 1st and 2nd for Dumervil ?
I Kinda would think about it… -
I bet the pats are going to take Oderick. I’d love to jump in from of them and take him!!!
-
Green Lantern (Dez and Mays’s Agent),
I think he said we got lucky to get into the playoffs. Thats a fair statement considering the Colts and Bengals rested their starters. Yes, we played as well as any team down the stretch, but we were only 7-7 in “real” games.
Thats said, I do think we would have been closer to 12-4 on the season if we didn’t have a rookie QB. If Sanchez develops like we are all hoping he will, we should have a very good season.
-
Dylan -
Even if he said that JR covered it. And we started seeing the real Jets down the stretch when Sanchez got the hang of it. -
Green Lantern,
I agree that next year we will be seeing more of the “playoff” Jets than the Jets we saw earlier in the season. That said, we did lose to some pretty bad teams last year (Buffalo, Atlanta, Miami (twice), and Jacksonville), so I can see why some fans are a little hesitant.
I think the team is going to be real good next year. Sanchez and Keller seemed to finally find that chemistry we were hoping they would develop. Also, we fixed what in my opinion was by far our biggest hole last year at #2 CB. We still need to add another pass rusher and maybe a slot receiver, but this team is loaded.
-
Sanchez has been watching film and talking with coaches and going to meetings all offseason. He is going to take a HUGE step forward this year, that’s why i think we’re going to the ‘ship.
And concerning RFAs, i definitely do NOT want Marshall, and Dumervil would be interesting, but i don’t think he’s worth our first. Keep in mind we’re going to be bringing in Adelius Thomas once he gets cut.
-
Ugh! Who cares who the Pats take! In 2008, everyone was afraid that the Pats were going to take Gholston…so we end up with a guy who may become one of the worst Jets’ draft busts of all time. Odrick seems like a good college player, but the last alleged “can’t miss” 5-technique 3-4 DE was Tyson Jackson and he’s battling Gholston for worst draft bust of the past 10 years. Heck, even Mario Williams has just been okay…good promise, but not yet a stud. And, IMO, not since Haloti Ngata was drafted in 2006 has a 1st round DL even sniffed the Pro Bowl and the only DL that have 10 or more sacks so far are Dallas’ Anthony Spencer and the recently deceased Gaines Adams. Don’t get me wrong, I like guys like Chris Long, Amobi Okoye and Sedrick Ellis, who all may become good NFL players, but I just don’t think the Jets will get an “impact” DL at 29 and trading up for Odrick doesn’t make too much sense to me in a deep draft. I’d rather stick with Pitoitua, who looked good last year when he got PT, and focus on other positions, especially a DE/WILL pass rusher to compensate for Gholston’s ineptitude.
-
Dumervil Is SOOOO Much better than AT… nd Keep in mind he’s 26…Another Young Piece to add to our young core.
Come on those losses are too east to explain..
and i would really like to not bring them back up..with a Vet QB we could of easily won 11 or 12 games last year. -
No doubt that ED is better then AT, but i don’t think he’s worth a 1 & 2, and keep in mind that Rex likes big OLB’s, ED is one of, if not the smallest one in the league. That’s why i doubt we’ll get him or draft Hughes from TCU.
-
Jesus,
I said they are on the right track, but as others have stated…relax with the SB talk.
As for Dumervil, I do not think he could play DE in a 3-4, too small.
-
I don’t believe in that too small stuff. Its about skills and heart! You can forget about Dumervil because there’s no way we’re giving up 1st and 2nd for him! I would love to take a chance on Jerry Hughes though. If it was about size then we should just stick with Gholston because look how he turned out. There’s also no guarantee that we are going to get AT and we still need someone for the future regardless. I don’t like Odrick either for some reason.
-
To A Rebuilding team or a up and coming team Dumervil isn’t worth a 1st and a 2nd.
But for a team like us where all we need is a Elite Pass Rusher to be an unstoppable defense then yeah he is worth it. -
Also Find Me A Transcript where Rex Says “I Like My OLB’s Big” and ill shutup.
-
How about the fact that all of his OLBs in Bmore have been like 6’3″ and bigger?
-
Thats just an assumption anything other than him saying it his self isn’t a fact.
Plus how many 5’11 3-4 OLB’s are as good as Dumervil ??? How Many 5-11 3-4 OLB’s are there in the NFL?
Rex probably never even got the chance to get his hands on one with talent! -
This argument is pointless, lets just wait and see what happens. Mike T has the last word! I trust whatever decision he makes.
-
Just looking at espn nfl rumors- came across something interesting- Cleveland Browns are very interested in acquiring Odrick- organization see Odrick as a perfect fit in the 3-4 defense- compares him to Richard Seymour.
How come I have a feeling that their might be an arrangement between the Jets and Browns that if Odrick is their at #29, Cleveland trades up to #29, and we get their 2nd rd pick # 38 as well as getting our 3rd round pick back from Cleveland due to the Braylon Edwards trade!
-
Brad,
Or our 3rd and 1st for the browns 1 so we could get berry and odrick will prob be there at 29 for cleveland -
Don’t see that happening jleonhard- we dont have a 3rd- cleveland has our 3rd due to the Braylon Edwards trade! Thats why I can see them trading pick #29 for Browns pick #38- for the Browns it almost like moving up to #29 and giving up nothing because their 3rd round pick was the Jets anyways- their just giving it back! The only if to this scenario is the Browns made a trade with Philly recently and I dont know the details of the picks involved.
-
B. Marshal is being worked on. Mr T is never satisfied. Owner is a king and will get it done. I guarantee it !
-
Greenblod your a little late dude, i think most of us are sick and tired of arguing about Marshall. That was so 2 weeks ago, lol. That being said, Marshall will not be a Jet. No way in Hell. He just doesn’t fit financially.
-
Is that Katt mayby a cat ?
That was SOOOOOOooooooo last year. You seem a bit late. Good to have you here though. Dude, right? ;-)
-
On the serious note, our owner ownes Johnson & Josnson, and there is no sallary cap. Why not?
-
If the salary cap was never to be brought back, i would be 100% on board for bringing Marshall. It’s just that the cap will be back, and we need to resign Revis, Mangold, and Brick, not to mention Cro and Edwards too.
-
How about Braylon & 2nd (or maybe 3rd) for Marsh?
-
We got Sanchez, don’t wait. You’ll end up with a lemon if he has to throw 6 & 7 yard ins and one deep one a game.
-
If it happens i won’t be mad, because Tanny would obviously not make the deal if we couldn’t resign our current core guys. I just don’t think it’s gonna be possible. Think about this, of Marshall last three great seasons, he has yet to have a better year then Braylon did two or three years ago, when he mad the pro-bowl. I think after a full offseason with the Sanchize we could be in for a huge year from 17.
-
……agreed. Still though ………
-
Brad,
Referencing the trusty trade chart: The Jets sliding back from #29 to #38, would recoup us our previouslly traded 3rd rounder (the Brown’s THIRD 3rd rounder), and would still favor the Browns by ten points…. the equivalent of swapping our 5th round pick for their FIRST 5th round pick.
Given that, I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Browns trade up into our first round pick either… Though, I had them pegged taking McCoy. Trading up to land a franchise QB is an easier sell to the FO and fan base than for a DE, like Jared Odrick.
They already traded for Sheldon Brown and Chris Gocong (which cost their 4th and 5th round picks)… If they drafted Eric Berry and Colt McCoy (a “franchise QB”), they will have added:
A starting CB, a starting S, a pass-rushing ILB, a franchise QB, AND still have two picks in the 3rd round, three picks in the 5th round, and two picks in the 6th round.
i think they would be ideal trading partners, yet again… though this time around, the trade would be more mutually beneficial.
At #38, I would like: Jerry Hughes
SECOND 2nd rounder: Tyson Alualu
3rd round: Ben Tate -
Big Katt- 1st of all, Braylon Edwards having 1 better season than Marshall is irrelevant considering the fact that Marshall is alot more consistant and is considered a top 5 wr in the NFL!!! He has 3 straight seasons with at least 100 rec and 1000 yds, not to mention all his TD’s. I believe that he has made more than 1 probowl also. Braylon can hopefully alot better for us this year but i really doubt that he has a probowl year and much less a better season than Marshall. If we were to attain Marshall, we would be either involving Braylon in the trade or signing Marshall and letting go of Braylon so we wouldn’t have to worry about paying both of them. I would personally get Marshall but i doubt that we do.
Jameson- I love the Jerry Hughes pick but i really doubt that he would be available that late, we would be lucky if he’s available at 29. I don’t mind getting Alualu but i doubt we get a DT that early in the draft unless its Cody. Ben Tate just doesn’t make any sense to me unless we lose Leon.

What RFAs are even left that are worth going after?
