ST Coach Kevin O’Dea Leaves Jets for UFL

by Bassett on April 6th, 2010 at 2:40 pm

Kevin O’Dea, who became the interim ST Coordinator between the reigns of Mike Westhoff and Mike Westhoff (who needed time away to recover from his leg surgeries) has left the Jets according to Tom Rock (covering for Rod Boone) at Newsday.com.

I’m not sure where being a special teams coordinator on a winless UFL team ranks on the coaching ladder, but it can’t be too far away from where Kevin O’Dea spent the last few years with the Jets. He was brought in in 2008 to take over as coordinator in place of Mike Westhoff while he dealt with health issues, but when Westhoff returned O’Dea was marginalized and was a coach (but not a coordinator) on the staff.

No longer. O’Dea has been named special teams coordinator for the Hartford Colonials under head coach and general manager Chris Palmer (the former Giants quarterbacks coach who took the job over the winter).

It must have been tough for O’Dea to have to deal with the situation he was placed in, but I’m happy that Westhoff is able to coach and after that, the rest of the ST staff can figure itself out.

Got my ny jets draft party tix

  3. avatar Michael M. says:

O’Dea got screwed a little bit. Also, wasn’t he one of the coaches whose contract was not renewed at the end of the season?

  4. avatar John Z says:

The only person more invisible than Kevin O’Dea at the Jets is Rod Boone at the Newsday.

  5. avatar EastSide (Sanchez to Sanders TD!) says:

Boone’s stint really hasn’t lived up to the colorful tenure of Erik Boland. I think the side link is still labeled “Erik Boland’s Inside the Jets”… Yup, still is.

While Westoff is a kickoff coverage/return guru without peer, my understanding was that O’Dea’s specialty was kickers (having coached guys like Rackers in Arizona and Robbie Gould in Chicago). Too bad to see him go at a time when his experience might have been most useful.

    Good luck Kevin.

What do they pay for ST coordinators in the UFL?

  7. avatar BamBam says:

Westhoff is the best in the business … we need to line up one of those nerdy 26 year-old film room guys (a la Mangini with Belichick) who will absorb everything he can from the guy

  8. avatar greene says:

    who?

  9. avatar john l says:

talk about the pre-downtime season……sheesh! there’s got to be something better out there then news on o’dea.

  10. avatar Snakeman says:

On the above topic, I think Erik Boland is too tough an act for almost anyone to follow. He was hands down my favorite Jets beat reporter, and nobody else even comes close.

  11. avatar greenie says:

i saw a UFL game last year, not bad football. not NFL obv, but not bad. if o’dea has more control, good for him.

  12. avatar endzoneview says:

The team announced that Clint Stitser has joined the team.

    Folk now has some competition.

  13. avatar daddybe1 says:

we need tix for the draft party this year

  14. avatar J-Kay says:

    Jets signed K Clint Stitser.
The strong-legged former Fresno State Bulldog has been out of football the past two years. He figures to compete with Nick Folk for the kicking job, as the Jets seem willing to gamble on one of the two emerging as a reliable option.

    Who?

  15. avatar IRA says:

Coach O’Dea was let go after the seson ended. Hope he does well with his new team.

  16. avatar Bent says:

Stitser has probably been signed as a kickoff specialist. Folk isn’t good at kicking off.

  17. avatar Electric Ham says:

a 53 man roster with the way rex likes to use an assortment of players on his defenese makes me doubt that we are going to have 2 spots for kickers available

  18. avatar Electric Ham says:

Anyone think its possible the Jets could trade for haynesworth?? That would definately provide both weight and depth on our d-line, not saying i dont like Pouha as a back up to the big jinx but is it possible fat albert could play some DE/NT/Goal Line fat boy…. you catch my drift.. it looks like the skins are really trying to rid themselves of him… Shanahan wants a good environment at the training camp for his first year in DC

  19. avatar J-Kay says:

Haynesworth’s contract is insane. Unless he agrees to a restructure, nobody in the league is touching him

  20. avatar Bent says:

It’s not that bad. $9m (all guaranteed) for both this year and next year (3.6 this, 5.4 next) and then $7.2m (non-guaranteed) in 2012 or he could just be cut then.

  21. avatar J-Kay says:

Really, thats it? Washington must have shoved so much money into the front of that deal then. Regardless, one of the main reasons they are trying to deal him is that they dare moving to a 3-4, and they don’t think theres a role for him

  22. avatar War Machine says:

hmmm i like the idea of Fat Albert…

  23. avatar War Machine says:

and who is this Stizer guy? The Jets are gonna have egg on their face by letting go Touchy Feely!!!!

  24. avatar jleonhard says:

I can jus imagine jenks in the middle with albert on one side and ellis one the other wow tht would be scary!

  25. avatar Marvel says:

How exactly can you get egg on your face after letting the kicker who choked in the biggest game of the year go ? 30/36 no touchbacks, can you say “average” & he wanted to play “gunner” instead of being the last line of defense(that’s wut kickers are suppose to do) .. I like Folk & wouldn’t mind a 3 kicker system but only if this new guy is a touch back machine .. Uhmmm how about we just stop carrying 8 Qbs.. That would free up a spot .. Besides it’s time for Ainge to be the #2 man .. I can’t stand KC .. I’d trade that guy for a 2015 7th round pick ..

Oyea good luck to the guy that this post is about ..

  26. avatar JetsFan65 says:

I highly doubt that the Jets get Albert. There’s a better chance of us getting B. Marshall in a trade. Besides we don’t need Albert and his contract or attitude. We would be better off drafting Cody or D. Williams.

  27. avatar JetsFan65 says:

Marvel- That was a hilarious post, especially about KC. I doubt they let KC go though unless they are planning to bring in someone like Bulger. For as much as we may like Ainge, I don’t think the Jets trust him yet. Maybe next year.

    From Rotoworld.

    CWPOST1993-

Nice article! I still don’t think that this will happen even though it is crazy to envision. Also, i alway wondered. How credible is the BleachReport.com?? I always see articles from them but nothing ever materializes.

  30. avatar jleonhard says:

JF65 bleacher report is usually off but they did get the antonio cromartie trade right

  31. avatar JetsFan65 says:

    Thanks leonhard!

  32. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

gholston for haynesworth…….and believe it or not gholston is owed 9 milmore according to the bleacher report

  33. avatar Bent says:

Bleacher Report has NO credibility whatsoever. Read this:

    http://www.thejetsblog.com/2010/03/01/why-bleacherreport-is-retarded-part-one-of-a-two-million-part-series/

“gholston is owed 9 milmore according to the bleacher report”

WRONG. He is owed $5.9m. There is a $3.6m bonus clause, but that will only kick in if he plays over 45% of the snaps in any of his first 4 seasons and he hasn’t come close yet.

See, I told you they had no credibility.

  34. avatar Electric Ham says:

bleacher report is terrible, they let their columnists write whatever they want with no back up information/credibility

  35. avatar JetsFan65 says:

Thanks Bent!!! That article is all i needed to see. So like i was saying about Albert, doubt it happens!
