Cimini notes that the Jets are meeting with QB Mark Brunell today.
In the first indication that the Jets are in the market for a veteran backup quarterback, the team is hosting free-agent QB Mark Brunell today at the facility, the Daily News has learned.
Brunell is about as veteran as you can get, as he turns 40 in September. The former Jaguars starter has bounced around the last few years, having spent the last two with the Saints. Prior to that, he started 33 games in a three-year span for the Redskins.
While the Jets talked a good game last year about QB Coach Matt Cavanaugh, Cav couldn’t spot start for Sanchez after the wonky knee game. Clemens looked awful (though kept it together somewhat) during his time on the field, but the team really needs to address this two spot, and three project backups won’t cut it for a variety of reasons. As mentioned above, the first is actual playmaking. The second is that the Jets are burning a roster spot if they are entertaining the likes of non special teams contributors like Jason Taylor that they can’t afford to waste FOUR spots on QB when maybe two will play over the course of the season, especially when the team just drafted their franchise player last year.
Thanks to roderider and W. Adams for the heads up!

No thanks. Hes not good enough to play at this point. His only appearance since 06 was the last week of last season and he was terrible
-
I’d rather have a young but experienced backup like Kyle Boller or JP Losman or even Josh McCown
-
Is he a UFA? if so, then we can’t get him and Taylor.
-
We DON’T need a back up that can still has a young arm. We won last season when Sanchez was down and we didn’t have a decent back up then. Our backups just have to hand the ball off. We DO need a back up that Sanchez can lean on. Sanchez needs an experienced qb to help him learn and grow. I doubt we will see much progress in his development, without a veteran mentor.

i would pass…first, i would like to see what Ainge brings to the table if given a shot. brunell and the like will still be available after roster cuts…..why fill a spot for a QB if not needed.
-
If we can sign him (which means either no Taylor or we lose, say, Clemens) then I say absolutely! Who could be a better mentor for the Chez? Plus, I’d trust him in a pinch, even if he wouldn’t be a great emergency QB.

I get adding a veteran presence and all but at least start with what you have in house first (namely looking into what Ainge and O’Connell can do) then make your decisions.

Word is we may release Bryan Thomas if Taylor signs…

Ainge …..
Ainge …..
Ainge …..That’s who I want to be the back-up .. It’s not like the guy is gonna get 10 starts to prove himself & based off what I’ve seen he has what it takes to be a good NFL QB .. The guy can play .. If we can get a 5th round pick for KC I’d jump on it ..

No Brunell, No Cry.
Why release Thomas? Dump Gholston. -
Glad to see some people still remember we have a very decent backup in Ainge. I would like to see Clemens go, regardless if he’s replaced. We don’t need a bunch of warm bodies on the sidelines, we need one promising backup, and an experienced vet to coach the guys in front of him (hey, is Vinny looking for work these days?!)
-
Why release thomas is right. Taylor is not going to be a player for more than a year probably….
Also, I think that they are just bringing Brunell in, to put the pressure on Taylor to sign because they can only sign one. They do not want to be used by Taylor….

Bulger or Bust.
-
The reason Brunell makes sense is that during his early days he was a very good QB on the move, just like Sanchez is…..despite being a lefty, Brunell actually played in a very similar fashion that Sanchize is liable to.
As mentor/on field coach, Brunell would probably be as good a fit as anyone.
….as a player we need to fill in, in case of injury?…..he’s probably one of the worst.

I’m with Marvel, give Ainge a shot. He’s been in the system long enough to show what he can do this pre-season; give him a shot.
W/r/t Brunell, nothing personal, but don’t go picking up 40yr olds. What’s next, trying to get Farve back if / when he finally hangs it up in Minny?
If I could get even a 7th for KC I’d grab it. He’s going nowhere fast..er make that going nowhere slowwwwww.

R u Kidding Me?!

i like this i think he will be a good backup and role model to sanchize
