Pat Kirwan of NFL.com writes about what he perceives as the Jets areas of concern from a draft perspective.
New York Jets
Needs: DE, OLB, RT, WR and SAnalysis: The Jets tapped into the Chargers’ roster by trading for CB Antonio Cromartie and signing free-agent RB LaDainian Tomlinson. They seem to be having trouble locking up KR/RB Leon Washington to long-term deal. There are also some age issues along both lines with DE Shaun Ellis and OT Damien Woody both in the twilight of their careers. Former first-round choice Vernon Gholston doesn’t look like he can be counted on at outside linebacker, and unless they are able to pluck Adalius Thomas from the Patriots, they will need to address that position in the draft. Picking 29th overall makes it difficult to target a certain player, but an excellent receiver may drop to them, which would make sense with Braylon Edwards under contract for just one year after signing his restricted tender.
Draft choices: Nos. 29, 61, 124, 155, 198 and 236

The need for a guard depends on how highly the organization thinks of Matt Slauson.
-
Depends on if we sign JT or not
-
I cannot envision the Jets taking a receiver in the 1st or 2nd round. They used their entire 2009 draft on the offense. A receiver is simply not a need – the team is going to run the ball and already has a handful of playmakers who can catch the ball
I would take the BPA on defense or OL with the first 2 picks

His analysis seems about right, though I think at #29 you take the best available whether he plays DE/OLB or on either line.
And while its pretty clear Taylor is using the Jets as a negotiating tool, isn’t it something that we finally have a front office that wants to win a superbowl and not just content with simply being good.

I dissagree with it all … Lol ..The Jets don’t have needs they have wants
Jets draft 1.0
LW/4th will be traded on draft day for a 2 ..KC/7th will be traded for a 5..1 Devin McCourty
2 Jason Worilds
2 Reshad Jones
5 James Starks
5 Ed Dickson
6 Zoltan MeskoI checked the Jets roster/Practice squad & all the depth guys people want are Kind of on the team already(Turner,Slausen,Potty,Devito,Henry,Cole, etc) ..for some reason I want the guy we picked up from Miami(wright) to make the team ..he looks like an all pro from The one highlight vid I can find lol …

I think the “need” is for a WR that Sanchez can grow with (almost like Manning/Harrison all those years ago).
I wouldn’t be surprised if they go with someone like Pouncey, if only because the identity of the team is to establish a strong running game, get big mauling linemen and because Faneca won’t last forever.
Just MHO

I dont think Three is a handful…. Just Saying. I Agree Though No WR in round 1…unless of course DEZ BRYANT!!!!!
Had to get that in there. -
The Taylor courtship tells you the jets have a draft plan that doesn’t include an early pick on a DE/OLB. They want to sign Taylor to fill the need and then do something else in the draft.
My hunch, trade up for safety Earl Thomas (or Eric Berry, but that seems like too much of a stretch from 29).

Jason Taylor —> Taylor Mays

This is interesting.Mike D-
Yea at Linebacker but Taylor Is Going To Be A Good Safety….No clue why you said that though… -
Because of Edwards they aren’t going to be getting a WR, at least not early. I’d love to see them get Dexter McCluster to play some out of the back field and as a slot receiver. But I don’t see him dropping to 124th and I also don’t see them taking him 61st. I’m still really really REALLY annoyed about Edwards, that was a ridiculously stupid move. Dustin Keller doesn’t exactly have sure hands either, but there is practically no chance they go after a TE. I see a lot of defensive drafting coming, maybe if a talented offensive player falls to them. But Tannenbaum will just improve the defense even farther for Rex. Take the safe route, I’m not sure if I’m happy about that or not.

Emanuel Sanders please

The JT interest might mean that the organization was not impressed with Odrick’s workout (or feel he won’t fall to them and isn’t worth trading up for) and are certain that Sapp cannot play a 3-4 end roll at the next level.
I have a feeling that the first pick the Jets make in two weeks won’t be an “exciting” one.

WAT MORE COULD YA WANT?

I dont see them going after a RT- Damien Woody was considered the best RT in two analysis sites- “Fifth Down” and “Profootball Focus”. He has 3 more years left at a reasonable price, I could see them cutting him in 2012 when he has a salary cap of 5mil. I am more concerned with Faneca- making close to 9mil each of the next 3 years- so I say OG- but maybe they feel Slauson can do the job.
Marvel- Interesting draft- but your missing DE. That is possibly one of our biggest needs. You have Devitto as a depth guy- Your wrong- as of now he is the Starter cause Douglas isnt their anymore- so that means Potty or that new kid Wright are the depth guys at DE- if Ellis or Devitto go down you want Potty or Wright starting? We can address DE in the later rounds- plenty of talent all over the place.
On McCourty- Never seen him play, seen some highlights- Not impressed with his #’s- not many Int.- read reports that he has a limited upside! -
Any word if Jets are interested in Haynesworth???
-
Of all the least sexy picks they can make, I would be okay with Pouncey.
He can dominate the inside OL positions and gives us great depth should (knock on wood) Mangold ever go down.
I love me some Brandon Moore, and think Damien Woody could slide inside, if need be… so drafting a highly touted RT would also be okay with me. Just not with the first round pick.
-
all i know is that if dez bryant falls to the jets or near their pick we should snatch him up
-
Brad – I don’t think DE is that big a need. Ellis doesn’t get hurt, and the platoon of Potty/Devito with Gholston coming in on passing downs is more then adequate at holding down the RE spot. Potty is going to be great, mark my words. I see him as Rex’s next Haloti Ngata.
-
jlad51, Haynesworth is too much of a cap burden. He would make a destructive DE though.
-
BigKatt- still a little lack of depth their in my opinion! Devitto was a nice contributor last year, but still never started and Potty hardly ever played. I think Potty has potential too- waiting to see what he weighs this year- he added like 20 lbs last year. Also interested to see if they made VG bulk up to play more pure DE!

i think that’s a great review of the jets needs but i see trader mike using the 29th and the 124th or 155th picks in a package to move up and get who they really want. I’m hoping it’s the OLB from Michigan
-
JORDAN SHIPLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
i like the draft from Jets4life would be very happy with those picks, i see olb and de as the biggest needs so i’d draft those spots with 1 and 2, then try to snag a wr in the 4th so…
rd1: Jerry Hughes DE/OLB (grab witherspoon if he somehow slips tho)
rd2: Correy Wootton
rd4: Jacoby Ford WR (jordan shipley, emmanuel sanders if fords taken)
rd5: Larry Asante S (Myron Rolle if asante is taken)
rd6: Kyle Jolly G
rd7: Naaman Roosevelt WR -
assuming that the jets don’t trade (a big IF), i would like to see them pick the following:
Rd 1 eversen griffend de/olb
Rd 2 damian williams wr
Rd 4 myron rolle s
Rd 5 kevin thomas db
Rd 6 ed wang OR sam young ot
Rd 7 armanti edwards wr/qb -
IMHO…drafting a kicker is a waisted draft choice…
1st 2 picks should be for OLB and NT/DE…
the rest of our draft should be for picking up a CB,D-LINE,O-LINE and SLOT RECIEVER…
not in that particular order…but those picks should be used on best player available at those positions…just my thoughts…

That’s a solid overall job but I would put guard on there too if you’re going to put RT.
