Audible: Does Santonio’s Arrival Really Change the Plans?

by Weeks on April 12th, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Without a doubt the trade for Santonio Holmes has upgraded the offense and has seemingly expelled the need for Tannenbaum to draft a receiver. However are we losing sight of the long term future here? Randy Lange explains that drafting a receiver like Dez could still be the ideal way to go.

Some would think the trade for Santonio Holmes would preclude the Jets from taking Bryant. If the Green & White gets him signed long-term, it might. But given Holmes’ off-the-field issues, they could approach him with the same wait-and-see approach they used with Braylon Edwards.

I tend to agree with Randy. While the Jets would have a surplus of receivers, they also need to take into account contracts and the possibility of something going haywire.

As we have already noted Holmes is another violation away from a year suspension (and although I’m sure Ryan and Co. are going to squash those issues, you never know) while Braylon has yet to win the full trust of fans and coaches due to his unsure hands. Of course this doesn’t mean the Jets should draft a reciever in the first considering it isn’t a huge necessity but Tannenbaum should think about the long term and covering all the bases just in case.

Feel free to chime in on the matter.

I think we’re set at the WR position this year. If it ends up being an issue this season, next year’s WR draft class is deep and talented.

  2. avatar Green Lantern says:

If Dez Fell To 29….Get Him lol its not happening though.

  3. avatar Jcjets says:

Any chance we trade Edwards and draft a WR? I do think we should trade a guy like Clowney. not that we will get much but a package deal to move up somewhere in the draft. The guy has talent and we don’t have space for him.

  4. avatar Harvlis says:

I’m with J. Santonio just freed the Tan-Man into moving up for Berry or one of the other can’t-miss early picks. If there was a problem with Santonio, where he couldn’t play next season — Tanny would go back to work.

  5. avatar Jets = (Less) Misery says:

we need a pass-rusher- I thought that before the Holmes trade, so naturally the trade would only confirm that in my mind

  6. avatar Rick12 says:

If Dez Braynt were to fall to 29 i would have no problem taking him. Edwards or Holmes will be gone next year and then we are right back to square one.

  7. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    E. Weeks—

Sorry, have to disagree here. With JCo, Braylon and Bluntonio already in green and white, I don’t think it makes any sense to go after someone like Dez Bryant. We already have one of the most potent WR cores in the league right now.

And wee have other needs that are more pressing than WR:

    1. A solid cover safety
(Pool can play centerfield for us, but he’s just one concussion away from retirement)

    2. A pass rusher
(Even if we sign Jason Taylor, he’s just a stop-gap for a year or two)

    3. An OT
(Faneca may be in his last year or two with us)

    4. A RB/FB
(T-Rich is probably in his last year with us)

    5. Depth at the D line

    6. A quality kicker

    7. A quality punter

  8. avatar david i says:

Tanny has been and continues to demonstrate a consistent approach to preparing for the draft. Fill in as many holes as possible, so you go in with options to move up to get the targeted player. He has done it every year. Harris, Revis, Keller and Sanchez. I’m sure he will take the same approach. If there is someone they covet, he will go up and get him. Whatever he does, you have to give him the benefit of the doubt, as he is doing an absolutely amazing job!!!! He should have been executive of the year last year.

  9. avatar MrJetGreen says:

You can’t not take a deal like this unless Holmes simply can’t get himself straight for this season.

  10. avatar MrJetGreen says:

Oh yeah…..there is no way the Jets are taking Dez Bryant regardless of the Holmes deal…no $^%@*^& way.

  11. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    One more thing, E. Weeks—

I’d love to see us trade up—way up for Eric Berry. This seems unlikely, but after Mike T worked his magic in the Holmes trade, anything seems possible. Berry is a monster blitzer, a monster in coverage, he can intercept, he can tackle, he can hit. And he’s one of those rare college players who can come into the NFL and start on day one. He looks to be a future All Pro, and as Eddie said on another thread, EB could be our own Ed Reed. With Revis, Cromartie, Leonhard and Berry as our DBs, we’d be on our way to having one of the best Ds in the history of the league.

The only other safety I’d take in the first round is Earl Thomas, especially if he falls to us at #29, which seems unlikely. Other than Berry, ET is the best cover safety in the draft. Thomas is also NFL ready, and and a monster talent.

If we don’t trade up for Berry, and if Thomas is gone, then I’d take a pass rusher in the first round, like Jerry Hughes.

Also really like Reshad Jones in the second round. He’s not as solid a cover safety as others in the draft (like Morgan Burnett, whom I really like, or of course Berry or Thomas), but RJ is a solid run stopper, he can intercept, he can tackle, and he can hit like a truck.

As for RB/FB, I really like SackDance99′s suggestion of Toby Gerhart, especially as T-Rich would be able to mentor him.

  12. avatar Marvel says:

Saturday I called the Browns liars because Holmgren said he wasn’t gonna draft Clsusen .. But he was telling the truth .. I think he wants Mcoy so we will trade LW our 2010 1 & 4 ,as well as our 2011 1 for EB … I am 100 % sure .. Trust me I have my sources ..

Oyea … Rex runs the show so we will still Run first .. No big deal ..

  13. avatar dakar says:

    ben…

every1 has berry going to clevland…now if we can work a deal out with clevland to move up to snag berry… what do you think it would cost us…and who…

what players and how many draft picks do you think he will cost us in drafting him (berry)…

so my question is…what do you think the jets will do if clevland called to work out a trade…

  14. avatar dakar says:

well i see what MARVEL thinks…

  15. avatar Marvel says:

    * the right to draft EB .. Aka the 7th pick ..

  16. avatar dakar says:

    marvel

    isnt that alot…

    2 #1s a 4th and leon…that seems a bit to high for me…

  17. avatar Marvel says:

Nope … Our 1s are actualy 2s because we pick so low this year & hopefully next year .. Plus there’s not eneough touches for LW anymore .. I actually think we throw in a 5 next year to sure up the deal .. ..

  18. avatar Marvel says:

I know alot of guys want alot of draft picks but check our Roster/practice squad we already have depth guys we don’t kneed anymore .. It’s time to win NOW ..

  19. avatar dakar says:

    lolol…you crack me up…

  20. avatar dakar says:

    marvel

im with you…i would rather get 1 player that i know will help us from day 1 then get 7 that will be fighting for a roster spot…

  21. avatar Al Toon4prez says:

    Trade up and get BERRY!!!!

  22. avatar AKA....Drew says:

This allows Mr T to so what I said he would do 2 months ago. He will trade up and get the top player on their board.

He has done this to get 3 of our best players in Revis, Harris and Keller. Why change that now? A lot of draft picks are needed when you have a crap scouting department and need multiple chances to hit on a star player…. we dont have a crap scouting department or a chicken GM

He might even use Leon as a chip. We are filling holes with FA’s and trades.

  23. avatar dakar says:

but i still say we need a pass rusher in the end…if we can get to the QB alot quicker…then that just helps out whoever we have back there…

and if CRO. can bounce back and perform like he did his rookie year…our defense can be unstopable…
    sacks,turnovers and TFL…just my thoughts…

  24. avatar John Z says:

I agree with Ben & J=(L)M – we need more pass rush!!
(or cowbell … not sure which)

  25. avatar Marvel says:

    dakar

that second round pick is all yours my man .. Feel free to take the best pass rusher you can find .. Worilds,Sapp,Hardy, etc ..

  26. avatar Max V.V. says:

Mark me down as a strong disagree. While his concerns are not incorrect, we could only get Dez by way of trading up, which is not worth it. Not for a receiver. We have other, more immediate needs, and if this blows up in our face, we can deal with it in next year’s draft.

I, for one, have faith that Holmes will work out and that we’ll eventually sign him to a long term deal.

  27. avatar brightfuture says:

AKA drew he also traded up and targeted mangold and Sanchize

  28. avatar C-MART28 says:

I agree I mean this trade for Holmes has put us in the position where we CAN try and trade for Berry. I still dont know how much it wud cost though. call me crazy id give Cleveland Clowney, this years 1st, this years 2nd, and next years 1st. what do you guys think? I mean we still need a pass rusher but im thinking we snag the kid out of Ole Miss in the middle rounds. Berry almost solidifies this team. take Mesko the punter out of Michgan and WALA the Jets may very well be SB champions. okay okay im getting a little ahead of myself but what can I say…IM EXCITED ABOUT MY JETS!

  29. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew & Marvel & Dakar—

I would LOVE us to trade up with the Browns for their #7, if Berry were still on the board.

The problem is I don’t think that Leon gives us any leverage at all. Maybe if the Penguin was still running the show, he’d fall for it. But not Holmgren.

Any good GM would know that Leon is a risk—there’s no way to tell if he’s going to come back healthy, and come back as strong and fast and able as he was before the injury.

I think all we’ll get for Leon (if he signs his tender) is a conditional pick in 2011.

As for what it would take to get Holmgren to give us their #7 pick, that’s a tough one. But it would have to be a package, and it would have to be pretty sweet.

Marvel says our #1 & #4 this year, and our #1 in 2011. But I think giving up next year’s #1 might be a price Mike T wouldn’t want to pay.

As for players, there’s a list of who’s expendable now, but I don’t think any of them have any real value in a trade.

Unlike others, I don’t think we can part with Bryan Thomas, even if we sign Jason Taylor. BT and JT would fill different roles on the team. The only way B. Thomas becomes expendable is if we sign Adalius Thomas, which might happen, but probably not before the draft.

Brad Smith might have some trade value, but not enough to swing a deal for a #7 pick. We’d have to bundle him together with at least a couple of other players. I’d prefer not to part with BS myself: he’s been very effective for us in the wildcat and returns. But if he’s the missing piece in a package that allows us to get Berry, I’d have to say go for it.

Clowney has very limited trade value. Clemens has virtually no trade value.

I’d take a can of soda for Gholston, but what team would want to take on that inflated salary?

So that leaves us with what? Our #1 pick, our #4 pick, Brad Smith, Leon, and Clowney for Cleveland’s #7, if Berry’s still on the board.

Don’t know if Holmgren would take a deal like that.

Don’t know if this whole idea of picking up Berry is just wishful thinking, or if Mike the Magician could actually find a way to make it happen.

  30. avatar LamJones says:

I’d like to sit tight and use our 1st and 2nd round picks on a safety and DL in either order. As much as I’d like to sign Berry, he’s going to cost a ton of money long term and we have to take care of our own at some point plus we do have other holes to fill on the current team. If I had my druthers, I’d take two solid players that can help us this year and be relatively cheap going forward over trading up for Berry. Maybe we get lucky and Thomas is still available at #29 (or Jones in the 2nd round). I’m willing to take that chance with an eye towards the future.

  31. avatar belvey631 says:

If we trade leon, we’ll need another rb. Imagine if we didn’t have greene last season when leon went down.

  32. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    LamJones—

Berry is an exceptional talent, a future All Pro, an Ed-Reed quality safety. What EB would bring to our blitz schemes, coverage packages, and run stoppage—that would go a long way toward making our D one of the best in the entire history of the league.

But, yes, maybe you’re right, maybe the price would be too high to trade all the way up to get him.

Holmgren would demand a lot for his 1st round pick. And we don’t even know that Berry would still be on the board at #7.

Seems unlikely that Earl Thomas would fall to us at #29, but if he did, I’d jump.

Would also love to see us pick up a solid pass rusher, like Jerry Hughes.

  33. avatar Merc20 says:

    @brightfuture

Mangold was the pick we got for trading Abraham. It wasn’t a trade up.

    __________________________

Love the Holmes pick up. I think Tanny still plans to try to move Leon on draft day for more ammo to move around. I kinda hope he moves up for Earl Thomas realistically, but would sing his praises big time if he could some how move all the way up for Berry.

  34. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    belvey631—

Even if we keep Leon, we won’t know if he’s going to come back healthy and at full strength and full speed and full ability. If he does, he’s a potent weapon. But right now, his future as a RB is unknown. Which means LW isn’t much of an insurance policy if Shonn goes down.

Also this is probably going to be T-Rich’s last year with us.

Which means that whether we keep Leon or not, we need to draft a quality RB/FB like Toby Gerhart.

Also, it looks like the FO isn’t all that interested in keeping Leon around. Which means it’s likely LW is traded for a conditional pick in 2011.

  35. avatar jkjet64 says:

I’d personally like to see us drop back into the second for an extra pick. I would hate to package so many picks as you guys are knocking around. I love all the moves, and maybe i’m too cautious, but sooner or later it’ll catch up to us. I don’t want us to win now and pay later. I’d rather have a solid foundation for a while. It’s been too painful for the past 30 yrs.lol

  36. avatar SackDance99 says:

I don’t know why everyone assumes that the Jets can’t sign Holmes and Edwards. Both are damaged goods and could command far less than market value. Plus, if there’s a new CBA, there could be a bigger salary cap and I’d be willing to bet that the owners won’t go crazy in the first year of the CBA.

As for Dez Bryant, I doubt that he’ll be available at 29 and the Jets’ really don’t need him as Holmes, Edwards and Cotchery are all under 30.

  37. avatar jkjet64 says:

    Sack,

I was thinking the same thing about signing both of them. I would think they would both have to be a litlle humbled by being cast off of their collective teams for 5th rounders too

  38. avatar belvey631 says:

Ben i agree with you 100%. I know leons return to form is questionable. I wasn’t saying not to trade him, just we’ll need to address rb for sure if we do. If we can pickup a good rb that can contribute this season it’ll be exciting to have 2 young rbsfor now and the future.

  39. avatar Broadway12 says:

As much as I like EB its too high a price to pay . If we were picking the teens then maybe but not as far back as we are . I’d rather target ET he might be in closer range. And I’m not opposed to Taylor Mays he will be withing range also

  40. avatar jetsdt715 says:

i would give the browns this for their 1st rd pick:
    2011 1ST rd pick
    2010 4th rd pick
    clowney, gholston and esmith?

if we could keep our 1st pick and we get the browns 1st rd pick, we can get berry and jerry hughes/sergio kindle/jared odrick

  41. avatar Green Lantern says:

If one our draft picks combined with Pace turn out to be a consistent Pass Rush Earl Thomas is what we need!

  42. avatar bernie says:

So if we take a WR in the first round, when exactly do we get around to taking that pass rusher? I mean, how many years can you consistently ignore such an important part of the team? Gholston went bust and aside from him we’ve drafted no one since Bryan Thomas (and look how that turned out).

WR is a luxury, not a need. If the Jets don’t go D-line/pass rush with the first two picks, I will be stunned.

  43. avatar Brad says:

So not for moving up! But I could see us possibly moving up to the late teens early 20′s to get Brandon Graham if he is still available! Berry is an amazing talent- but we would have to give up way too much for him.

It would be wise to draft depth players! We have so many guys that will need new contracts after this year, if we lose some in free agency next year we will have many holes to fill. Need to make sure we have backup plans. That is why I am against trading up and would prefer to trade out of #29!

  44. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Sack—

As we’ve discussed on another thread, I agree: I don’t think it makes sense to trade either Braylon or JCo. Also think we could re-sign—and should re- sign—Braylon and Bluntonio, especially if they perform well in 2010.

  45. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    belvey631—

Okay, then, looks like you & I agree.

  46. avatar Broadway12 says:

Trading up a few slots or trading back or out of the 1st round would be fine to me the cost to move into the top 5 for a SAFETY is too risky

  47. avatar jkjet64 says:

Does anyone know what it would take for us to pick up a 3rd rounder? Meaning how far would we have to drop back into the 2nd?

  48. avatar Jets4Life says:

No we get berry to high if a price to pay and with earl thomS moving up draft boards it is going to be hard to get him either, if we give up our first and second ( using value chart) we could get up to 17th to 18th by it still doesn’t seem like enough

I say we say put at 29 and get Hughes/odrick
    Win 61 get reshad jones
Forth round eric norwood/ cj Wilson (depending on first round)
    Sixth round zoltan mesko p
    Seventh alex parsons og

  49. avatar EddieC says:

this is the dumbest thing i’ve seen thus far…both braylon and santonio are young, and they have trouble similarly to dez bryant only through college- both damaged goods

who knows if dez will pan out like everyone has suddenly hoped

  50. avatar War Machine says:

i agree with Brad just a lil bit. I like Berry but that price to pay would be verrry steep. Id rather draft Kindle or Graham or just stay put and draft Hughes.

I know everybody wants a safety but how come we cant just draft Reshad Jones? I think he can be just as explosive as Berry.

With said we can draft a OlB/De in the, first and trade B Thomas for another 4th. Or sweetin the deal and trade E.Smith and Leon and BT for a 3rd and 4th.

So in all we draft 1 (Graham Kindle or Hughes)
    2 Reshad jones
through trade 3 Corner back (dont forget we have no nickel).
    through trade 4 DL
    4 Rb
    6 OL
    7 punter

And we sign Revis and Mangold get that out of the way. That way by next yea wer only have Brick Cro Edwards and Holmes to sign.

  51. avatar OriginalJetFan says:

Forget trading up for a safety, if you trade up for anything make it a sure thing rush LB or DE, that alone will make the secondary better and Poole is just fine.

  52. avatar dakar says:

    bernie

that is true and yet very funny…

  53. avatar dakar says:

    Broadway12

yea,it is a risk…imagine making a trade for E.BERRY and he ends up worse then gholston…it would take years to recouperate after that…lolol…

  54. avatar dakar says:

    Jets4Life…

i like your picks execpt for the kicker…after drafting nugent i really cant see us waisting a pick on a kicker…i hope we dont…

  55. avatar dakar says:

    War Machine

Kindle,Graham or Hughes…either 1 of these guys would be a very good pick…

we can draft a OlB/De in the, first and trade B Thomas for another 4th. Or sweetin the deal and trade E.Smith and Leon and BT for a 3rd and 4th.

that doesnt sound to bad…especially if we draft 1 of the guys already mentioned…

but i cant agree with you on waisting a pick on a kicker…

    dont forget paying D.HARRIS…

  56. avatar dakar says:

    OriginalJetFan

IM WITH YOU ON DRAFTING A PASS RUSHER 1st… i’ve been saying that since FA opened up…

  57. avatar rusty sanchez says:

we are set in 3 out of the 4 db positions for years to come with young guys… but our defensive line is starting to get old so to give away so much for berry dosent make any sense to me…i would love to get him but he aint a need…making our defensive line younger and more productive is a need…if gholston wasnt a bust i would say go for berry but now we gotta replace gholstons lack of production in this years draft

  58. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

    When’s Taylor making his decision?

  59. avatar rusty sanchez says:

if we got holmes for a 5th who would give up a 4th for bryan thomas???

  60. avatar dakar says:

    rusty…

that is funny isnt it…a 4th for BT…

  61. avatar SackDance99 says:

I’m not sold on Earl Thomas. He’s only 5-10, 202 lbs. and the Jets want him to be the new free safety. He and Leonhard would seriously lack height at the safety position. No doubt Thomas is talented and fast, but 5-10 is short and he’s not bulky enough/ I know Taylor Mays is more of a question mark, but he has great size, speed and hitting ability. As for pass rushers, I like all the usual suspects and Everson Griffin. He has all the pass rush moves, including a sweet spin move.

  62. avatar War Machine says:

lol just went to a dolphin blog they area talking trash about us and JT. But dont worry i smashed them with my witty new york flavor. They all hurt about what i said. I told them Jt wants to win a ring with us cause he couldnt do it with them. That we got Hard knocks and we have the first monday night game lmao.

they was hurt and stunned nobody could say nothen cause they wanted to get Holmes and couldnt hahaha.
I told them we are one step ahead of yall

  63. avatar dakar says:

    WAR

LOLOL…that was good…you guys got me laughing tonight…

  64. avatar War Machine says:

    Rusty

The Steelers HAD to make the move. how isnt BT worth a 4th???
He can play as a DE in a 4-3 line or 3-4 he can cover and is a real run stuffer especially to certain teams who cant stop the run. i think it is obvious honestly at least a 5th

  65. avatar Dylan says:

I think a fair deal for Berry would be our 2010 1st, 2011 1st, Eric Smith, David Clowney. Eric Smith would probably start for the Browns since they are very weak at safety. He would only be our 3rd string FS behind Berry and Pool, so we don’t need him. Clowney would actually have a very good chance to start for the Browns. He is stuck behind three very good receivers here. The only proven WRs that the Browns have are Massaquoi and Stuckey. I would even throw Leon into the deal if we had to. He isn’t going to get very many carries behind Greene and LT anyway. Then we could use our 2nd and 4th rounders to get an OLB and a RB.

  66. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Sack—

Taylor Mays is not a solid cover safety. He couldn’t play centerfield for us. The line on Mays is that he has trouble matching up with wideouts in man, struggles in space, takes bad angles, is not a reliable tackler, and is often preoccupied with getting a knockout blow.

On the other hand, other than Berry, Earl Thomas is the best cover safety in the draft. And like Berry, Thomas is that rare college player who is NFL ready and could start on day one.

There are a number of other safeties I’d prefer to Mays in this draft, including Morgan Burnett (another solid cover safety) and obviously Berry and Thomas.

Also, Reshad Jones (in the second round) is a solid run stopper, can intercept, can tackle, and hits like a truck.

Anyway, Berry and E. Thomas are the only safeties I’d take in the first round.

Otherwise, if both EB and ET are unavailable to us, I’d draft a solid pass rusher at #29, like Jerry Hughes.

  67. avatar WW85 says:

I anyone concerned that we are upgrading with all this talent & downgrading to all these headcases? I think we need Thomas Jones more than ever this year. Who is going to be the team leader this year?

  68. avatar Rizzo says:

Jerry Hughes (Beast) with the first, Reshad Jones with the second. Nastiness

War Machine, leave the hash marks on the field, dude. You got some white chalk on your left nostril… that’s right. No the other one – got it!

Okay. Where were we. Oh yeah, Antonio Santonio Fireman Edwards Bromartie & Company.

Obviously, Trader Mike scored a ‘steel’ of a deal, swapping a measly fifth round selection for Super Bowl MVP talent like Santonio Holmes. No question, the flipside is a possible one year suspension.

Therefore, I say that we draft as if Santanio isn’t on our roster. Actually, he won’t be for at least four games, and possibly more, which is why we got him for the low low basement bargin to begin with.

So, don’t kid yourselves. Nothing’s changed on our power rankings. Approach the draft, as if nothing’s changed.

    My two cents!

Anyone else feel that ESPN-NY has been a disappointment? It seems like their articles are calculated to rankle the crowd and generate as much response as possible instead of actual in-depth analysis. Now they’e off talking about how the sun has set on the Patriots and and Jets are the new class!

Really!? I practically bleed Green and White, but come on. We may have won the offseason but this team is a far cry from prying away the AFC-east title. There are two tough teams in the division that have bested us many many times before and though the talent is here, there is some doubt as to the mental makeup of the team. We saw them fall apart numerous times in close games. Add to that a second-year QB in Sanchez who can’t even run yet! Both Ryan and Flacco regressed in their second years, so who knows what we’ll see from our QB. Then add in our very tough schedule.

Point is, there are tons of things to be enthusiastic about regarding the Jets, but do temper your expectations. Titles are earned, not doled out!

    Ben,

I know Mays’ drawbacks, but he has size, speed and good tackling ability. I saw how he got beaten in coverage, but he has ability. ET just doesn’t have size and he doesn’t hit a ton, he’s more finesse. I understand why you like him, I just don’t see him in the Jets’ secondary. I know Mays is controversial, but like Mt. Cody, who I also like, if he can be coached up, he could be a very good pro. IMO, ET has a ceiling that Mays doesn’t have. My preference is still WILL/DE pass rusher. Do you like Griffin? He’s a talented pass rusher and he’s real fast. Like I said before, he can edge rush, bull rush and he has a nice fast spin move. I think he deserves more serious consideration. I like Hughes, too. But, Griffen, to me, projects as a better pro pass rusher.

  75. In otherwords, If we can’t land any of Cimini’s pass first round rusher suggestions:

    - Michigan’s Brandon Graham (if they trade up)
    - Texas’ Sergio Kindle (if he slips a bit)
    - TCU’s Jerry Hughes, an explosive edge rusher.

Because Jason Taylor is also not yet on our roster (and also not a long-term solution), then I would welcome Golden Tate as our slot receiver.

That said, don’t discount the power of an offensive line! There’s a reason for TJ’s resurgence, last year, and LT’s resurgence, this year. Brut force!

I value an offensive guard as highly as wide receiver and defensive line, but not nearly as important as pass rusher. Damn you, Gholston!!!

Also, we need a punter, really bad!

  76. Shamik,

I like Adam Rubin, formerly with NY Daily News (Surfing the Mets), now with ESNP NY. I’m keeping an I eye on his replacement there – new beat writer, Andy Martino.

Yet, I don’t like getting my info from Jane McManus – SUCKS! I know she’s a friend of the blog; and I’ve really tried to embrace her. I’ve listened to her interview, which incidentally occured when she was moving on, and was really happy she was moving on.

Unfortunately, she resurfaced like herpes on ESPN. I can take a woman in the White House, but the Sports Page is my home. Her personality is too pedestrian on paper or any other medium. She’s mailing it in!!!

First, Giant’s get the opener, now this. What gives?

    How do you spell disrespect?

    E-S-P-N ESPN! ESPN! ESPN!

  77. … So what I’m saying is:

Mets ESPN NY is great. I read Adam Rubin everyday!

Jets ESPN NY the garden variety crap. Jane McManus is a weather lady on your local news station, and she’s not even hot like David Wright’s girl, Erin Rogers.

You can get that Associated Press dribble without leaving your Yahoo page!

    Shamik -

Screw the Patriots. And the Dolphins? Don’t make me laugh. That’s how I feel. Sportswriters can never win with Jet fans. Either they’re giving us no respect or giving us too much respect. How about everyone stops worrying so much about what people are writing about us?

Taking a WR in the first round would make sense only if the team is determined to let Edwards or Holmes go after the season. I think there will at least be an attempt to re-sign both. In that case, we need a pass rusher or safety. And these armchair GMs with their blockbuster trades to get Eric Berry crack me up.

  79. Off Topic: I’d love to draft Stanford RB Toby Gerhart.

Arguably, coulda, shoulda won the Heisman. So fast, so agile at the combine, he out raced the “Fullback” category which would have dropped his ranking in the draft. Yet, let’s not forget this kid’s a ‘ground n pound’ bruiser!!!

Plus, he’s got character – Brains & Brawn! Gerhart’s sister is a start softball player too. Jets have a rich tradition of fullbacks: John Riggins, Bill Mathis, Brad Baxter. Richie Anderson.

He’s a stud, cut from the same kinda cloth as Mike Alstott..

because hes already in his 30′s and unfortunately his sack numbers are low and thats what other gms go by….imagine a fan who dont watch bt all the time unlike us just saw the trade then looked at his stats they wouldnt be too happy

  82. avatar Brendan says:

Um….BT can’t play 4-3 end. That was an utter disaster when he played there. He’s a good run-stopping 3-4 OLB, but he can’t rush the passer either. He only has 25 sacks in 8 seasons and more than 1/2 of those came in two seasons of work (one of them being his infamous 8.5 sack-in-a-contract-year bait-and-switch). BT is solid, but nothing special. How many teams would pay a 4th rounder for a one-dimensional 3-4 OLB? Not many.

    Sack—

If you’re talking about taking Mays on as a project, I still think there are better options, like Reshad Jones, for instance. He’s big, tough, physical, a solid run stopper, a solid tackler, and can hit like a truck. He takes better angles than Mays, and tackles better, and hits just as hard, but more effectively. Only problem, in terms of our needs, is that Jones is not as solid a cover safety as, say, Morgan Burnett or (obviously) Earl Thomas or Eric Berry. But if you’re interested in taking on a project, you might be able to coach R. Jones up in this regard, as he already has the ball skills and timing to intercept. And he could possibly fall to us in the second round.

As for Everson Griffen, the line on him is that he’s a powerful tackler in a confined area but lacks agility and balance in the open field. He’s a solid pass rusher that anticipates well off the edge but not an impact player in this phase of his game. Also doesn’t always play with great intensity or consistent effort.

I’d prefer someone like Jerry Hughes, Sack, as JH is more of an impact player in terms of the pass rush. Also gives tremendous effort. The weakness with Hughes is that he’s not as solid a run stopper, but if we’re talking about a situational pass rusher, he’s very solid.

If Eric Berry and Earl Thomas are unavailable to us, I’d go with someone like Hughes in the first round.

I don’t know what all the bashing of Bryan Thomas is all about. This guy has been a really solid player for us. Yes Brendan he is a pretty good defensive end in a 4-3. Do you remember when he filled in for Abraham in the playoffs that year and played well? Thomas is definitely worth a 4th rounder. Guys we can’t trade up for Berry there are just too many players to pay on this team. We have to lock up Mangold, Harris, Cro and Braylon after this season. Holmes is gone and Revis and Dbrickshaw are going to have to wait.
