Link: He’s Named ‘Trader Mike’ for a Reason

by Bassett on April 21st, 2010 at 9:45 pm

Greg Bishop writes a piece in the New York Times on Mike Tannenbaum’s eventful offseason, and reminds us of what the Jets might do in the draft.

In the past three drafts, Tannenbaum traded up for five players – cornerback Darrelle Revis, linebacker David Harris, tight end Dustin Keller, quarterback Mark Sanchez and running back Shonn Greene – and all are projected starters next season.

In this draft, the Jets are just as likely to trade down, stockpiling more picksthan the five they have. At their predraft news conference, the senior personnel executive Terry Bradway labeled the available crop of players as “decent” in the top of the first round. The Jets need to address their lack of depth on both lines, in particular. This seems like the perfect draft for that.

“From the bottom of the first round into the fourth round, maybe even the fifth round, there are going to be a lot of good football players,” he said. “You’ll be able to steal some players.”

I think that at 29 they might as well trade down and try to get more mid to early round picks. They have a great scouting team, with a clear idea of the players that fit into Ryan’s system. They could get a steal or two because Rex will know how to use certain players.

  2. avatar Nick says:

Trader Mike doesn’t like trading down, he thinks it’s for suckers. Look for him to trade UP.

  3. avatar ronnie says:

There will be teams that will want to trade from the top of the 2nd round into late 1st round to pick up Mccoy or Tebow.

  4. avatar ronnie says:

Trader Mike is so good, that he will trade the 29th pick for a 2nd rounder and a 4th rounder. Then he’ll trade those 2 picks to get like the 24th pick.

I love the way our team is built as of today…Id be for trading up if they really wanted one specific guy or trading down if they had a bunch of players they really wanted…I just dont want to trade a vet and bank on some 4th rd’er having to start for us on the defensive or offensive line…we’ve been down that road with the Adrien Clarke’s of the world after the Pete Kendall thing

  6. avatar Batman says:

Tyson Alualu- he is the one we should get

ronnie — honestly if I could favorite your last comment I would .. At first I laughed because it was funny but then I smiled(evil smile)because it’s true ..

  8. avatar jleonhard says:

wow batman never seen his highlights till now.. wouldnt mind taking him

  9. avatar scott says:

    Trade back for Alualu!

  10. avatar Shane L. says:

I say if Odrick and Hughes are both taken by #29 (which is very possible) then we trade down. If not they should happily take one of those 2.

Also, shame on me for not knowing this but maybe someone can help me out. Lito Sheppard is signing with the Vikings, does that mean we can sign a FA for whatever he gets or no because we released him?

  11. avatar k.c. says:

sounds like the RIGHT thing to do….only a FEW HOURS away!!…..I CANT WAIT!

another mock that has us taking best

i know other people have asked what drug jane mcmanus of espnny.com is taking….

and after reading this bit of genius from her column on the jets schedule i now know it must be powerful….. and she is a moron…

    quote….

As for weather, the Jets won’t get a break from the cold late in the season. The visit to the Dolphins takes place on Sept. 26 and the last four games are, in order, hosting the Dolphins, traveling to Pittsburgh and Chicago, and closing the regular season when the Bills visit.

UMMMMM….we WANT the dolphins here in december b/c ms mcmanus, they are whats called “a warm weather team”.

AND….in general we are a smashmouth team that happens to reside in a section of the country that always has whats called WINTER….. so going to pitt and chicago late, yes its cold…but we are kind of “familiar” with it.

and the last game of the season has to be a division game, and who else would we want besides miami coming?? UMMM the worst team in the division who will likely have nothing to play for…..

stunning contribution to journalism by her…..

    Batman,

Can’t argue with that highlight film. A man among boys. What a motor.

pretty good article about tyson alualu, discusses what positions he can play

  16. avatar WW85 says:

Great to see someone mentioned Alualu. My Cal buddies rave about him. I have no idea if the Jets have him on the radar but we SHOULD! The problem is a lot of teams do know about him and I bet he goes in the 2nd round.

  17. avatar Batman says:

    projected late 1st early 2nd

  18. avatar WW85 says:

You see a guy like Alualu with that work ethic & wonder if he’s a better pick than Cody whose ethic is questionable at best.

These Polynesian descent players are just fierce football players with something major to prove.

    The Chargers have 2 picks 28 & 40 & it seems they like him…

  19. avatar jkjet64 says:

Would love to see them trade back. But if Hughes is there or Odrick, I don’t think they will.

  20. avatar jkjet64 says:

Not sure if anyone else shares this train of thought but, I’d also love iupati. I watched Faneca get knocked down quite a bit ast year Pass Blocking.

  21. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    jkjet

Iupati is AWESOME…only guard in the draft that could start in place of Faneca rookie year…

Alualu is a REACH in the first round…in the 2nd though Id take the kid in a heartbeat

  22. avatar Batman says:

anyone with thoughts about riley cooper, 6’3 wideout 4.48 40 and great blocker, an opinion?

  23. avatar sunsetmusic says:

I am reaallly hoping that the Jets call on Pouncey or Iupati……not sexy but a championship caliber pick. I really like those guys and Pouncey would give us a solid backup @ center in the event Mangold needed some time but could start @ guard for us if needed. I think he will be a great LG and with brick, Puncey/Iupati and Mangold wed be set for the next 8-10 yrs. Get a Sapp or solid CB in the 2nd

  24. avatar sunsetmusic says:

    Batman,

Yeah my opinion is that he sucks…..lol

  25. avatar CCDC says:

There will be a trade or two. In round one I think if someone slips to the mid-twenties they try to to move up for him. Otherwise, their other picks are in play to move back. They may just try to move players for a late round pick or two. I hear Fanaca, Ellis, and Thomas out there, but don’t be surprised if they move Braylon to a team like Seattle

  26. avatar Brendan says:

    PASS RUSHERRRRRRRRRRR

  27. avatar J-Kay says:

Jets trade 29th pick for 38th and 71st as the Browns secure Colt McCoy imo

  28. avatar TJBfan (twitter @infresco4) says:

In one word I can disprove the trade down theory presented: format.

That format i speak of is the new draft format of course. There is no chance in hell that after all the spotlight on the Jets and the new stadium that they don’t pick during the first round.

The Jets have an HBO series for hard knocks, have 5 prime time games and the most MNF games. They have dominated the headlines, wether it be due to TJ release, LW tender, LT visit, Rhodes trade, letting Feely walk, Cromartie trade, JT visit, Holmes trade….you get the point.

The only outlet to get more headlines this offseason would be the Big Ben fiasco which has the steelers ready to trade the QB that got them 2 super bowl rings.

The first round will be the most watched round, and my guess is the Jets don’t want to be on the board once casual fans have lost interest. Look for something big tonight boys……I can feel it.

  29. avatar J-Kay says:

Heres a scenario: Eric Berry falls to Cleveland. What does it take to get that pick? 29, Ellis, Thomas, 3rd rounder? Too much, too little?

  30. avatar Revis Christ says:

TJBFan i defatly agree … thers no way wee trade out of the first round … i personally expect a big move i have no i dea what it is but i expect it …
J-KAY thats way too much a first a pro bowler a very good role player and a third i doubt it
