Tannenbaum Lends Holmes a Hand

by Weeks on April 21st, 2010 at 11:09 am

This should come as no surprise to anyone. We saw this before with Antonio Cromartie when the Jets decided to front him the money to pay his child support. Similarly the Jets have decided to rework Santonio Holmes’ contract so that he doesn’t lose too much money over the course of his suspension.

The Jets reworked Santonio Holmes‘ contract to save the wide receiver money while he serves a four-game suspension to start the season, according to the National Football Post.

Michael Lombardi writes, “When Holmes was traded (from the Steelers), most of his money due in 2010 was in the form of his base salary, but since he became a Jet, the team shifted the money into roster bonus, reporting bonus and signing bonus so Holmes would pay as little as possible for his fine.”

Well, well ain’t “Trader” Mike in the giving mood lately.

I heard the league will frown upon this move but this once again shows how the Jets are pretty damn smart.

They trade for players like Cromartie and Holmes who while they have some issues are legit players at thier respective positions.

If they do and play as most think …..these “gifts” the Jets are giving them will go a long way in retaining each if we choose to do so.

Its called a small gesture can go a long way.

  2. avatar JesusRevis says:

I like these moves because I agree that it will go a long way with the players. But I imagine at some point the NFL could create a new rule to stop these types of practices.

  3. avatar JayM says:

I have a hard time when MikeT does right with new players but hard balls players like Leon. It should be interesting when all these players have to be resigned, we will see if the Jets get a team discount.

  4. avatar Big W says:

Ah, why not spend the money on players that have been here for years….

We will see? The money won’t mean a thing if Holmes is suspended for a year and the Jets can’t use him. It is a decent move – not a lot of money.

In the end, if Holmes has a big year, he is going to want to be paid either way and so is Cromartie….

  5. avatar Brendan says:

Tanny is just manipulating these guys’ current contracts (Holmes, Cromartie). He’s always going to look for the best deal when signing new contracts. Players know they aren’t going to get the big payday here, but at least they now know the product is going to be better.

  6. avatar Big W says:

    I agree Jay M.

  7. avatar Rick12 says:

By dong this it shows that the team will take care of him and will help come contract time next year. Leon Washington is over valuing himself and the Jets were right in not paying him. I wouldnt go over 4 a year for leon.

  8. avatar brian311 says:

when you are suspended – it is not like the league gets your paycheck. you just arent paid. so i dont see why the league will care. he will still have to sit the games.

  9. avatar SackDance99 says:

The guy is moving to the NY Metro area from Pittsburgh. Sure, he makes good money, but that has to be an expensive move. Like with Cromartie, why have guys that you need focused worry about money? Plus, maybe this will help the Jets get a hometown discount. IMO, this is a smart business move.

  10. avatar Brendan says:

    Brian,

They would care because instead of him not getting paid that money, he’ll be receiving it. Softening his punishment, basically.

  11. avatar JayM says:

    Schefter tweet

Pittsburgh has begun contacting teams to trade Ben Roethlisberger for a top 10 pick. At least one team considering it. Story far from done.

  12. avatar jameson says:

Tanny also found a way to pay Jason Taylor gauranteed bonus money from NEXT year, thus surpassing the whole Jay Feely salary cap; The man is a money whiz.

If anything the league should be impressed with Tanny’s affinity for finding loop-holes, and offer him a job somewhere down the road.

  13. avatar brian311 says:

they might not like it, but if the league wants to impose a financial pentalty on him, they can fine him. a suspension is a suspension. the league doesnt look at how much he is making before deciding # of games. missing 1/4th the season hurts no matter how you slice it

  14. avatar Brendan says:

    Brian,

The whole point of a suspension WITHOUT PAY, is for the player to lose $ so they feel the pain of their suspension.

  15. avatar brian311 says:

yes i realize that. if they want him to feel more pain they have the ablity to fine him additionally. but they arent going to let how much money a player stands to lose factor in on the # of games they chose to suspend. that is what you are implying.

  16. avatar niko1677 says:

I have to imagine the Jets (Woody) are going to, in some way shape or form, make the NFL whole on this suspension from a $ perspective. Where does NFL suspension money go anyway? I know in the NHL there is a player emergency fund that receives the funds, but with the NFL they also say the money “goes to the league”, which is obscure.

  17. avatar Brendan says:

No is isn’t. They’re suspending him for 1/4 of the season. Whether a player makes $10 million or $1 million, they want that guy to know the effects of losing out on 1/4 of his salary.

  18. avatar AKA....Drew says:

At the end of the day……Mr T is becoming a god

  19. avatar brian311 says:

that is never the case. a player’s base salary (what they lose in a suspension) is not simply the total $ of the contract divided by # of years. it is more complicated than that

    we can agree to disagree.

  20. avatar adornoj1 aka JetFan in Miami says:

Agreed Drew…Mr T is the people’s GM by far, and these small gestures of good will, should add up to something in the future.

Anyone as excited as I am?? Its Draft Eve!!

  21. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

johnson & johnson is really pulling his wallet out this off season.

  22. avatar BamBam says:

We’ve got a players coach and now we have a players GM too … Goodell will close this loophole at the next CBA … Tradenbaum is featuring his value which is looking at all the angles … it was only a bit of weed anyway

  23. avatar SackDance99 says:

Hard to believe that Big Ben would be traded. If I were the Bills’ GM, I’d break my leg getting the Steelers’ GM on the phone. They are rumored to be interested in drafting Jimmy Clausen, who could be a draft bust. Instead, trade the no. 9 pick for Big Ben, who is already used to playing in cold weather and without a good OL.

  24. avatar adornoj1 aka JetFan in Miami says:

not really Hoz…we haven’t really broken the bank for any players, and we also havent mortgaged away our future. the veteran additions seem Patriot’esque back during their SB runs

  25. avatar Dave TN says:

Actually, it will cost the league some money as a team must pay a certain percentage of the wages (1/4?) they save from a suspended player to the league (I read that somewhere recently in regard to the Big Ben stuff). This in addition to undercutting the league by taking some of the sting out of it’s disciplinary efforts. I hope it’s worth it.

  26. avatar JayM says:

Woody has ties to J&J but he does not run it or get money from it.

“That was the beginning of the end of my ability to enter the company,” he said, although he still has ties to J&J and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. “That was a big period of transformation. Because I had to find something equal to J&J and the culture I’d been hearing about all those years. I thought it was so attractive. I still do.”

At 28, Johnson had started his search. He had moved to Florida and built condominiums yet found not one ounce of fulfillment. He ventured into cable television in 1977 and made a fortune his way, on his path.

Johnson emulated J&J at each stop, spurred by the company that would not hire him, attempting to reach some sort of parallel success. Still, when pressed for an achievement he regarded on J&J’s level, Johnson said, “I don’t think I’ve reached anything close.”

  27. avatar Brendan says:

Hah, that’s well & good but Woody still had the family billions to play with.

  28. avatar reality jet fan says:

people like cro and holmes do not appreciate gestures.Thats why they are free.

  29. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    reality jet fan

Did you just go that route???

  30. avatar starz31 says:

Won’t make any sense if they decide to not pay Shaun Ellis and his fair contract. Faneca I would like to keep, but I’d understand if they want to move on from him. I’m hoping not, because continuity with a running team is important. Any move on that part would be a move to secure the line for years to come, which Faneca doesn’t have much left.

Ellis, on the other hand, is still worth his contract. Our DLine would be unquestionably worse w/o Ellis in there next season.

  31. avatar Brendan says:

    RJF,

How do you know things like that? Holmes might greatly appreciate it. He might behave all season, come back for a discount, and be a long-time Jet. Same thing for Cro. Who is to say they are over their immaturities and ready to be adults? Yes, they could implode, but you speak as if you know these men on a personal level.

  32. avatar Tos9987 says:

They should have made him add a year or 2 to his contract for doing this . Like a cell company when you get a new phone

  33. avatar KenEB says:

Do something really nice for someone when you really have no obligation to do so, especially when it costs you something, should generate substantial “good will” from that person. Santonio Holmes should already feel substantial loyalty towards Mr. T and the organization for this gesture.

  34. So the money that Holmes is saving/getting, is this money that would have reverted back to the Jets anyway, or the league? I saw someone write that the Jets would get it but that they give some to the league. If true, then the Jets are giving up money and taking some away from the league.

As far as the Jets losing the money, I don’t really care much, but I will be pissed if they cut Ellis or Faneca to save money while they are throwing money they don’t have to at Holmes, who is being punished by the league for a reason.

I can also imagine that the league will be pissed if it loses them money (though I guess it won’t add up to a lot).

I’m pretty sure that Holmes appreciates the gesture!

  35. If they somehow are trading ellis or faneca and getting decent value (is this possible? Even for Trader Mike?) then it might be a different story.
