Film Room: This One’s Gonna Hurt

by Bassett on April 22nd, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Like the Spartans of ancient Greece, you either came home with your shield, or on it.

Here’s me right after the 5th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, so consider this me coming home on my shield.

Many thanks to SNY’s Brian Custer, who then proceeded to talk me off the ledge on Day One last year.

Time and performance heals all wounds.

  2. avatar NamVetJet says:

LMAO What a difference a year makes Bassett.

  3. avatar JayM says:

    ROFLMAO

Hey Bassett is there anyway to destroy that film :)

  4. avatar Dave says:

I remember almost being in this boat.

But then again, it was so delusional thinking back then how some of us could have even hoped Kellen Clemens was going to be a good long term option. The Jets made a ballsy trade, and it looks like they may have gotten their guy.

  5. avatar Brendan says:

Hahahaha wow. That’s me pretty much, except photoshop a few bud heavy bottles rocketing through the air and glass shattering.

I did not handle that pick well (I was also highly intoxicated), but once I sobered up I (as always) went with the “wait and see” approach. And boy did it pay off.

  6. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bassett—

Have to applaud you for being willing to show that tape a year later. You may have been wrong then, but you’ve got some genuine balls now, to man up like this, and take it on the chin.

    Bravo!

  7. avatar pound4pound says:

Still one of my five favorite online videos of all time!

  8. avatar NJets says:

    Basset,

Please film a new video of you reacting to the Jason Taylor trade.

We need him to also totally outperform your expectations.

    Thanks

  9. avatar BigKatt says:

That is pretty damn funny. I was the complete opposite, i was pumped we got Sanchez.

  10. avatar NYJBeast89 says:

Less than a year later and this video is cringe-worthy. Sanchez is a stud and Greene is definitely a “starter” lol.

  11. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Bassett

You are a stand up guy showing that…I was one of the guys who jumped for joy when it happened, but I was also one of the guys who loved the Kellen Clemens pick…

We know where your heart is Bassett, thats what counts

  12. avatar JayM says:

new york jets 2009 NFL Draft pick Mark Sanchez

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Xq9_n7Vhzg&feature=related

You have to love the reactions of the crowd

  13. avatar RichKotite2.0 says:

    Bassett,
Don’t be ashamed, a lot of us felt that way. That’s why we aren’t GM’s. In Trader Mike We Trust!

  14. avatar JayM says:

Then you get this reaction too funny

Jets fans react to Vernon Gholston selection at 2008

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDODX_FMbSI&feature=related

  15. avatar Chrebookie says:

    love the video.

I had almost the exact same reaction last year, sick to the stomach, felt like we got ripped off, hated the thought of taking sanchez with no experience.

When the pick came in, I was telling everyone ‘here comes crabtree.’ Then Nacho was announce and I stormed out of the room and did not return for about twenty minutes.

    in hindsight…..

  16. avatar jl8496 says:

    I was happy

  17. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    You know what cool though…

Barring injury, Sanchez stays at USC and he is a St Louis Ram today…we got the probable number 1 pick in this years draft for swapping 1st’s, our 2nd last year, and 3 guys who probably couldnt play for Rex…

    Jets got that one right

  18. avatar Lance Mehl says:

Great stuff .. and like many said kudos to have the balls to show it .. there are so many “experts” who can’t admit their mistakes ..

Weird, I remember thinking we didn’t give all that much up for him but Sanchez had only 16 starts?

I was more upset at the Shonn Greene pick !! Ha ! why did we need a 3rd RB .. now the guy is our starter !!

  19. avatar Merc20 says:

    @Lance Mehl

Same here on the SG move. Wasn’t happy with it at the time (didn’t seem like a dynamic back). But was more than happy with the way the year ended, I think he will be a great starting back in TJ’s stead and had no problem with them cutting TJ. I’m a big fan of younger talent especially at the RB position.

  20. avatar R in CT says:

    BB –

I was with you all the way — hated the pick at the time!

But like you, I’ve said here repeatedly that I’ve been very happy to be so wrong.

Hopefully there won’t be a repeat performance of any sort tonight …

  21. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I have to admit I was pretty close to that for about 4 hourds after that pick

And then the next day I did a total 180

  22. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Eddie—

I liked the Sanchez pick at the time too. Never liked Clemens, but I was a big Pennington fan, thought he was going to be the greatest QB we ever had. Would defend him when others said he had a noodle for an arm, or that he wasn’t tough. I still like the guy, even though he’s with the hated Fins, and even though he’s probably spent more time on the DL than on the field.

  23. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Jets basically have no balls……We passed on Leinart, Cutler and Quinn and we trade up for Sanchez who has 16 stars and is just awful……

    Just classic video LOL

  24. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I forgot just how funny this is…when I saw it last year I felt similar so it wasnt all that funny

I will replay this tonight back to back with the Dolphin Ted Ginn Jr pick video

  25. avatar Dylan says:

    Bassett,

Major props to you for showing that video. Lol i’m just glad that nobody on here (myself included) is GM of this team! I was a little uneasy about the trade until I saw that we basically only gave up a 2nd rounder. I’m a USC fan though so I really liked Sanchez.

  26. Brian – Haha – I remember watching this clip last year, too.

I’m surprised you didn’t pull a Goodell and destroy the evidence!

  27. avatar James in TN says:

Bassett I felt that way when we drafted Gholston. Too bad I was right on that one. Funny video. I could never air a video of my reaction to Jason Taylor being signed becuse of the numerous expletives.

Go Jets …Bring Eric Berry to Gang Green………if not trade down and get depth.

  28. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

I’m not sure if anyone can identify, but hopefully there are lol…

I went to Kutztown University of PA (Bruce Harper’s alma mater), and was surrounded by Philly Fans for 4 1/2 years, and yes it sucked being a Mets fan during the 2006-08 time period.

So needless to say, all my friends were laughing in my face when the Jets gave up the draft picks and players to move up to get Mark Sanchez. I was in a state of disbelief.

I just sat there and watched my facebook wall get full with , “hahaha let’s go JETS!” and “Another clip to be added to the Blunder Reel”.

It should be noted that when I was pumped about the AFC Championship game, none of those people had the balls to respond haha.

  29. avatar hank/naples says:

    Brian:

If Nixon can do it ( make a few min. of tape disappear), so can you. Kudos Bassett!!!

BTW, you might still be right about Franchez. With all his new toys, he MUST have an impact this year. NO EXCUSES NOW !!!!

  30. avatar Bent says:

James – I would pay to see a video of your reaction when they drafted Ainge.

  31. avatar igs, the double agent says:

Wow, somebody shares my old organizational frustrations. I just want to put my final 2 cents in before the draft. I’m hoping that if it’s a rush LB, it’s Hughes and not kindle. I’m just saying. Kindle is the next Gholston.

  32. avatar brian311 says:

i admit i was terrified when they announced the sanchez trade but when i saw what we gave up (a 2nd and a pupu platter of non-impact players) i was very happy with the move. we replaced coleman with douglas who was just as good and a fraction of the cost, and abe elam with jimmy leonhard. those are 2 upgrades, and all we had to do was give up a 2nd for sanchez

out of all of trader mike’s moves, the fleecing of the browns for the #5 pick may have been his best one

  33. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Sanchez is YEARS ahead of ANY of these QBs coming out this year…we got the best QB possibly in last year’s draft and definitely in this years…

Sanchez > Bradford, Clausen, McCoy, Tebow

  34. avatar bernie says:

Bassett, I was with you. So far so good with Sanchez, but it’s been one year. Time will tell. Hopefully he continues to develop.

Incidentally, most disturbing thing about this video is the Nationals cap. Ew.

  35. avatar WW85 says:

Can you imagine if we’d taken Brady Quinn? I remember at that draft Jets fans groaned when we passed on him. PHEW!

That is a a serious MEA CULPA, Bassett. I find myself regretting 50% of the crapp I say during games.

  36. avatar brian311 says:

eddie – completely agree. i remember this time last year i was against trading up for sanchez….partly because i thought it would require 2010 1st or 2nd rounder as well, and partly because i thought the 2010 QB class was “loaded”

it couldnt have turnd out more opposite. this years draft class has bradford (injury concern), claussen (maturity, arm strength concern) and mccoy (durability, height, etc). none of these guys are a sure thing at all

  37. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Or we just could wait another few years for Bradford or Clausen or McCoy to develop, because none of them are as good as Sanchez…

For all the Sanchez doubters, this kid is the best prospect, besides Stafford, that we could have possibly got…

None of the guys this year are as good and NFL ready in terms of running a pro style offense as Sanchez is and WAS last year

  38. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    brian311

Thats exactly my point…all these Sanchez doubters dont pay attention to college football..Its very rare nowadays to get a college QB that runs an NFL offense with Sanchez natural ability…and none of these guys are as good as he is this year, and nobody besides Looker at Wash stands out…

That throw to Edwards in the AFC champ. is a throw only a SPECIAL player can make…

If you dont like the Sanchez move NOW, then you really dont know what else is out there…and franchise QBs dont get traded without something being really wrong

  39. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Ben

I loved when we picked Sanchez…I thank the Jets FO for doing it on this blog…

But I also loved Chad as well…I hoped against hope for years that his injuries would clear up until it became apparent that we had gone as far as Chad could take us…that his shoulder was damaged and we needed an all weather special QB…

Chad will always be a Jet to me…just wish his ability matched his heart and brain…Im convinced Chad’s true calling is as a COACH in the NFL…dont be surprised if he turns out to be some ridiculous offensive coord. or QB guru

  40. avatar JEFFDOLFINI says:

I completely hated the Sanchez pick as well, but man was I happy we drafted Shonn Greene in the 3rd round. I remember jumping up and down yelling at 7 in the morning with my 6 month old daughter in my arms………..

  41. avatar WW85 says:

I’m a huge fan of Sanchez-Pennington’s brains WITH AN ARM!

But I don’t think he has proven his durabilityYET. He has only ever played behind big, bad offensive lines. What will it be like when he takes some real shots?

  42. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    WW85

Niether has Peyton Manning or Brady…

Your QB is NOT SUPPOSED to get hit…if hes getting hit left and right it means you

    a) have serious problems up front

    or

    b) your QB holds onto the ball too long

Sanchez took some MONSTER shots from the Colts and bounced back and played well…

Knocking a QB for not standing back there and getting killed is just plain stupid

  43. avatar k.c. says:

hey man,KUDO’S for even SHOWING this video!.

  44. avatar Nick says:

This draft is going to have a strange feeling. No matter what they do I think I’ll be into it. With no major needs, only trading away a favorite player will get me angry. Weird, I’m ALWAYS angry after the draft! Lol

  45. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    WW85

Sanchez is also MUCH MORE ATHLETIC than Chad ever was…Sanchez moves in the pocket and eludes pressure better than Chad ever could on his best day…

While yes, its only been one season, one of Sanchez’s best attributes from scouts was his ability to feel the pass rush and escape in the pocket while still looking to throw the ball

  46. avatar jetsfanferraro says:

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN WATCH THE DRAFT ONLINE????? PLEASE

  47. avatar Zartan says:

im gonna go back in the archieves and see just how many of you i argued with, that we needed Sanchez and that” he was going to be good even when he’s playing bad.”

  48. avatar reality jet fan says:

Both HC and QB seem great picks for our team but 1 year not enough time to know what exactly we have.

  49. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

    Jetsfanferraro

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-total-access/09000d5d817af3a8/First-round-bound

that should work for draft time, its not what’s on NFL Network TV broadcast, but it should work for ya

  50. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

check that, wrong link…. sorry bud

  51. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    reality jet fan

    Maybe so…

But you cant say that Sanchez isnt the best option the Jets had to draft a QB…not sure Stafford has the swagger to play here…Sanchez def does

Plus, Sanchez is better than anyone in this years draft, AND next year…

    not too bad rigth?

  52. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

I watched it last year on NFLnetwork.com because I didn’t have DirecTV, I imagine it’ll be on there again this year, unless anyone else has heard differently…

Sorry for the wrong link again!

  53. avatar reality jet fan says:

Sanchez so far is perfect for new york he ever gets a ring and new york has the next prince of NY when jeter retires.

  54. avatar reality jet fan says:

After all this eddie we may have to wait until tomorow for a pick.

  55. avatar rusty sanchez says:

awesome…i was against that pick to and anyone who suggesting we trade up for sanchez the weeks coming into the draft…i started liking the pick alot when it actually looked like sanchez was happy to be jet and not the 5th pick

  56. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

If we have to wait its because the Jets dont really like a player at the spot…

My gut tells me that the Jets are picking SOMEWHERE tonight

  57. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    reality jet fan

If the “usual suspects” start coming off the board…expect the Jets to trade down

But I have a feeling someone starts to fall…they always do

The Jets are probably sitting back and letting the draft come to them

  58. avatar reality jet fan says:

I understand trading down just that kind of kills the night

  59. avatar reality jet fan says:

Have to completely trust the gm. But i am telling you i will freak if we deal faneca.

  60. avatar Jcjets says:

Haha. That is a great video. The funny thing is your reaction is totally fair! It was a gamble with lack of experience, etc. But I’m very glad we did make the pick!

  61. avatar Andre D says:

    Bassett,

You should post more trade/draft reaction videos. Entertaining.

  62. I had a blast with Brian at the draft last year, and getting the chance to capture this moment on video. You’re a stand up guy for posting it a year later.

Have fun this year, wish I was there with you. I’ll be following all the outstanding coverage right here.

Please get someone to capture your reaction somehow to this year’s Jets 1st round pick!

  63. avatar EastSide says:

Yup, time heals all wounds and… balls?

Keep up the great work Bassett. You truly run one of the best sports blogs on the internets.

  64. avatar Daniel says:

Hahaha oh man! It really was split and I have to say I was on the side that was excited about the move. I’ve seen Mark play as far back as high school and at USC he was great in those 16 starts.
