Audible: Round Eight

by Bent on April 24th, 2010 at 5:18 pm

The final selection has now been made in the 2010 draft, which means we can now focus on my favorite round, which we call round eight around here.

Anybody that was not selected can now be picked up as an undrafted free agent (~with no Final Eight Plan limitations!~) so the Jets will be working the phones for the next few days.

You may not think this to be that important, but the Jets roster contains several guys that they picked up in round eight, including Brandon Moore, Mike DeVito, Rob Turner, Ropati Pitoitua and James Ihedigbo. Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard were also undrafted free agents.

So, were there any guys that went undrafted that you would like the Jets to bring aboard?

Post your suggestions in the comments, together with any rumors or reports about actual UDFA pickups.

I would like to see RB Conte Cuttino. Although LT, SG, JM and CW are on board, I believe this guy deserves a shot and has the potential to be a good RB in the NFL.

  2. avatar to says:

Brandon lang was undrafted and some other d linemen?

  3. avatar reality jet fan says:

    Call faneca!

  4. avatar Jetsfan310(Andrew) says:

    this dl from conneticut

  5. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Here are the pieces I think we still need:

    1. A QUALITY KICKER.
I have no confidence in Folk.

    2. A QUALITY PUNTER.

    3. A SOLID COVER SAFETY.
Pool can play centerfield for us, but his history of concussions worries me.

    4. Would like us to re-sign Marques Douglas.

    5. Would like us to pick up Adalius Thomas, if the Pats cut him.

  6. avatar A Kinz says:

clint gresham, ciron black, freddie barnes, brandon lange, punter (robert malone), kicker (brett swenson)

  7. avatar to says:

Vince Oghobaase also drafted with a high grade
and despite the concerns and character LeGarrette Blount is still around

  8. avatar Jeezy Hamilton says:

Brandon Lang, DE, Troy ; Adam Ulatoski, OT, Texas; Lindsey Witten, DE, Conn.

  9. avatar to says:

    undrafted

  10. avatar Jetsfan310(Andrew) says:

what about the kicker from texas hunter lwarence

  11. avatar Jetsfan310(Andrew) says:

    lawrence

  12. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Would also like to see depth at the O line.

And depth at the D line.

  13. avatar Jeff says:

Round 8 is where we get our depth.

I love how people talk about Bill Belichick being a draft guru. But if you draft like 8 to 10+ players. Not all of them are going to make the final roster.

Actually several years ago NE had like 3-4, 2nd and 3rd round picks. Out of those only 2 have become adequate starters at best

  14. avatar LewB says:

Kevin Haslam, G, Rutgers. Need more OLine.

  15. avatar Marvel(I wanted Mays) says:

What about the DB from Michigan .. Warren ? Is he good ..

  16. avatar nyckage says:

    Is Arthur Jones still available?

  17. avatar Marvel(I wanted Mays) says:

We should also sign Blount & put him on the practice squad ..

  18. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

    a punter with a leg

  19. avatar nyckage says:

    Ben Nevis
We just signed Jason Taylor, and Rex said they are not releasing BT, but I agree, we need a Punter and Kicker, whom we can rely on.

  20. avatar Revis Christ says:

DE Greg Middleton – Indiana University

CB Donovon Warren – Michigan University

CB/WR/ST Ray Fisher – Indiana University

  21. avatar J-Kay says:

WR Freddie Barnes, DE Vince Oghobaase, NT Travis Ivey, DE Boo Robinson, OLB Rahim Alem, WR Seyi Ajirotutu, OT Ciron Black, OT Tony Washington, S Jeromy Miles, S Barry Church

  22. avatar Blake says:

    Stafon Johnson

  23. avatar Fobi says:

    e. weeks,

I agree with you, I really thought he had a shot at being drafted before the whole leon deal came about, don’t know how likely that is now. Plus, he’s from my school so I would’ve liked to finally see someone make it to the league

Other than that, our d-line could use some more depth hopefully we can address that

  24. avatar roof says:

    legarette blount!!!!

  25. avatar nyjetsman says:

DB Devin Ross – University of Arizona
I would take him over Lowery and Coleman any day

  26. avatar HomeOfTheJets says:

Tell me someone see this clip already

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCkCRm-EcMw

    Rex is too F’n Funny

  27. avatar Mikedk says:

I’ve read that the Jets have signed Donovan Warren, which I consider a very solid pick-up. He can play either nickel corner but is a much better fit as a free safety in the NFL.

Some other players I would like:
    Lindsey Witten
    Kevin Basped
    Vince Oghobaase
    Aleric Mullins
    Antonio Coleman
    Junior Galette
    Jay Ross
    Darryl Jackson
    Alex Daniels
    Travis Ivey

  28. avatar Fobi says:

looks like we signed donovan warren

    Adam_Schefter:

Well, it looks like the Jets have made a free-agent move. RT @DonovanWarren: Naw I ain’t get drafted but I’m wit the Jets. Let’s get it!!

  29. avatar nyjetsman says:

Stafon Johnson would be a nice story

  30. avatar nyckage says:

I love the Donovan Warren move, he was a border line 1st-2nd round pick early on, but as you know in the NFL draft, S*%t happens.

  31. avatar AR says:

Tann & rex, have something else up their sleeves, with Faneca gone and more $$$ on the table within the next few week I’m almost certain that more defensive players will be added, also, looks like (DT) M. Douglas will be asked to re-join the Jets, who else will they get to fill in as DT backups ????

  32. avatar C-MART28 says:

I’m going to really miss Leon but Joe McKnight is almost as fast if not as fsat as him and is very similar. He’s almost as much as a threat so I was not mad that we traded Leon, but I am mad that we traded him for a FB. Hopefully Tony Richardson turns him into a very good FB. I am really pissed that we didn’t get Zoltan Mesko, imstead the damn patriots got him. we really need a punter

  33. avatar reality jet fan says:

Was this fb from ky very desired that we had to trade up and give up leon?

  34. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

is warren any good on he is a special team player?

  35. avatar reality jet fan says:

If leon gets back to 100 percent could be one of biggest mistakes by the jets FO.

  36. avatar nyckage says:

    Hoz the Jet
Forget about being a good Special Teamer, this guy can be easily put Lowery out of a Job and permanently move Lowery to safety.

  37. avatar JetsgoBIGorgohome says:

Leon had too many question marks going into this season. His desire (or lack thereof) to work out with the team even after he got cleared to resume working out was a red flag. It was clear he didn’t want to be with the team anymore. I think picking up McKnight was a huge pick. Leon will be missed but they showed last year they can do it without him.

  38. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

The Bostonians picked up some good names in the late 7th round, damn.

  39. avatar nyckage says:

The Jets really didn’t lose Leon, Mcknight is very much the same back, except he’s more healthy, and plus he plays bigger than his size, breaks alot of tackles fro his size

  40. avatar mike says:

    O’Brien Schofield

  41. avatar Marvel(I wanted Mays) says:

What’s the Book on Warren ?

He’s gotta be better than Coleman ..

  42. avatar Mel says:

Jets just picked up Donovan Warren, CB out of Michigan. Very solid corner, was originally projected to go in the first two round before the combine, where his 40 time was a liability. Was an outstanding shutdown corner for michigan though

  43. avatar smercad says:

All the kickers are available. I imagine an undrafted kicker would love to compete for the Jets job with the unstability in the position.

  44. avatar nyckage says:

    Marvel(I wanted Mays)

Warren is actually better than Lowery, so you don’t have to worry about him, but if the Jets signed Mays the Jets would have gone from Number one pass Defense to number 10, he makes the big hit, but only after the WR makes that big pass

  45. avatar EastSide says:

Here are some players I don’t think people have mentioned:

Justin Cole, San Jose State LB
    Kion Wilson, South Florida LB
    Kevin Basped, Nevada DE
    Brandon Carter, Texas Tech OG
    Manase Tonga, BYU FB

  46. avatar nyckage says:

If Warren can’t make be a CB, he can play Safety , because of his lack of speed.

  47. avatar jchief says:

Warren should be a good pickup as a CB/FS.

For the O-line, I would look at Ciron Black or Tony Washington as potential future RTs

For the D-line, I think Vince Oghaboose has the potential to be converted from 4-3 DT at Duke to a solid 3-4 end.

  48. avatar Marvel(I wanted Mays) says:

    Lol … #10 … that’s a bit much ..

But thanks for the Warren info .. I’m really liking how our team is shaping up .. I wouldn’t be suprised if we signed a couple more people today ..

  49. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    nyckage—

I like the Warren signing, and, yes, we agree about Taylor Mays. TM is so preoccupied with making the big hit, he loses focus on the ball and the play.

  50. avatar david harris says:

    warren looks solid:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K73Uu3L-jCw

a kicker should be brought in to compete with folk. if folk wins the job then hopefully he’ll return to his superbowl form.

anyone remember when we took nugent in the 1st round… :(

  51. avatar dakar says:

1 thing that was getting under my skin was every team seemed like it wanted to help NE stay on top with all the trades that were made with them…

but with all the picks they have had in the past years they just seem to be getting weaker as i said 2 years ago…it was the bigining of the end for them then and i stand by that…they have had alot more busts then we have had and we keep on getting stronger while they are getting weaker…and i believe gholston will turn his carrer around now that he will play with his hand in the ground…he did play well when he had his hand in the ground last year…so he will be solid…IMHO…

  52. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Donovan Warren was a fringe 3rd rounder and would have been a 1st rounder if he would have went back for his senoir year…..

I am a Michigan fan and loved that this kid could be a Marlin Jackson type player for a secondary.

    Excellent pickup!!

  53. avatar dakar says:

i know my last post was off topic but i had to get it off my chest…

  54. avatar Greeneforprez says:

    Munoz from Rutgers

  55. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

we took Nugent in the 2nd round that year… we didn’t have a 1st rounder that year, but it was our 1st pick of the draft

  56. avatar david harris says:

probowl*… i was preoccupied thinking aobut the superbowl that i said that. my bad.

  57. avatar EastSide says:

Also we should look to get Fresno State punter Robert Malone. Can’t hurt right?

  58. avatar tomg says:

funny, I was at a store and talking to a young giant fan and when I told him the jets traded washington he couldn’t believe it. To say he hated the trade was a under statement. I still say it was a good deal. Washington was a free agent at the end of the year and will never be the same player again. people are thinking he won’t miss a step.

  59. avatar clint says:

Is there a link to the signing?

  60. avatar JDB says:

I see mclaughlin. He is a long snapper now and the jets need one

  61. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Donovan is so good…..I would be a little worried if my name was Dwight Lowery….seriously

    He will make this team

  62. avatar dakar says:

    nyckage

i honestly think lowery would be a better fit at safety… as many said in the past…he plays better when he can see the field like he played in college…man coverage just isn’t for him…and i hope rex makes the change for him…just my thoughts…

  63. avatar Marvel(I wanted Mays) says:

Drew .. Do you think Rex is mad at him because of the Indy game … I would be ..

  64. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

jets sign offensive guard charlie tanner

  65. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

Clint Gresham as a James Dearth replacement? Or is he not worth taking up a roster spot?

  66. avatar david harris says:

Lowery could definately bring in a 4th or 5th.

Most importantly signing warren gives excellent depth. The Jets will now have 5 cb’s.

    Revis,Cromartie,Wilson,Lowery,Warren.

Lowery/Warren could be converted to safety. Even though… at safety we have:

    Leonard,Pool,Smith,Ihedibo, and likely Sharper

    so…

  67. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew—

I like the Warren signing, think it’s a steal, but what I’ve read about Warren is that he isn’t solid enough in coverage to play man, but he’s physical enough that he could play safety for us.

You watched the man play—what do you think?

  68. avatar nyckage says:

    david Harris
Why do you think it’s likely the Jets will sign Sharper

  69. avatar nyckage says:

But either Lowery OR Warren would make a great safety,, and I hope Rex isn’t mad at Lowery, he’s a hard worker and would be a star or at least better than he was at CB, he’s a very hard worker and should stay, and besides Rex loves corners way to much to let a guy like Lowery guy, who is actually very solid

  70. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    nyckage—

I don’t know: after the AFC Championship game, I think Rex isn’t too confident in Lowery. And I don’t have all that much faith in him myself. I love having Revis, Wilson and Cromartie—three shut-down corners. And Warren is a steal. Wouldn’t want Lowery at safety, and I think Rex sees Dwight now as our #4 / #5 CB.

  71. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

the jets sign jeff cumberland TE from illinois

  72. avatar dtrain says:

i was just going to ask the same… why does everyone here think sharper is a forgone conclusion…one TMZ vid is not 100%

  73. avatar tomg says:

    HOZ THE JET,
where are you getting this info from?

  74. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

so these are the guys the jets signed so far

    warren-cb
    charlie tanner-og
    jeff cumberland-TE

  75. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

stafon johnson just signed with the Titans i believe… good for him

    Hoz,

Who do you follow? I follow a ton of guys, but apparently you follow a good Jets source I don’t yet… hook a Jet fan up!

  78. avatar dakar says:

    nyckage

i agree…and after watching warren’s you tube clip…i saw lowery…they are the same player…and like you said…lowery is solid and might even be better than solid at the safety position…just my thoughts…

  79. avatar tomg says:

Thanks, that is what I was asking, twitter is not a answer!!!

  80. avatar Tos9987 says:

I also think they get sharper .

  81. avatar endzoneview says:

I still say we sign Adalius when cut and have a funny feeling we get Sharper after the Final 8 deadline.

    Maybe I’m dreaming, who knows?

  82. avatar Tos9987 says:

I feel as if sharper realy wants too play here (he said it numorus times not just the tmz vid) and will wait till we can get him .

He is probably thinking that we are the best place he can get a few more picks returned for a TD to brake the record .

  83. avatar GangreenTed says:

with the howard green signing to the redskins the jets can go get sharper now!

  84. avatar david harris says:

    nyckage,

i think they’ll get sharper because they had an obvious need at safety and did not address it via the draft. i felt certain they’d go out and get like major wright or reshad jones at the very least but they did not. you think they are confident in brodney pool and eric smith to replace kerry? doubtful.

a week ago i posted a video of darren sharper exiting a restaurant being interviewed by tmz. they ask him what he thinks of the jets, he answers “they are 1 safety away from winning the superbowl”… hinting it was him…

he wants to come here and it looks like the jets honored that desire by not adding in more of a logjam at safety by drafting one. i’d expect him to sign in july after these restrictions pass.

  85. avatar tomg says:

That’s what I posted earlier when jet fans were having a stroke about how the jets didn’t address there needs on the d-line. Teams will now cut d-line players after drafting young studs. The jets have a plan., it’s not over people.

  86. avatar E. Weeks says:

Warren himself announced he signed on with the team — Adam Schefter confirmed.

  87. avatar Bent says:

    Ted – no…Green was a non-tendered RFA not a UFA.

  88. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

  94. avatar showtime says:

I would love to get Blount from Oregon. A punisher up the gut would really complement the backs we have now. I def think we should bring him and the kicker from Texas in. Proven he can make kicks and lets be honest, folk was cut by the cowboys from a reason.

  95. avatar showtime says:

nevermind, blount is now on the 49ers. The site posted by JayM is great. Has all the teams and players signed. Unfortunately some of the divisional opponents made some nice pick ups.

    Garrett Lindholm, Tarleton State
    Height: 5-8. Weight: 185.
    Projected Round (2010): 4-5.
4/2/10: Raider fans are lucky that Sebastian Janikowski is on the team; otherwise, Al Davis would consider Garrett Lindholm in the first round. Lindholm, who hit a 64-yard field goal in 2009, drilled 3-of-4 attempts from 60-plus at his Pro Day. Wow.

Jets sign DT Mick Williams, Pitt

    ______________________

6-1, 280 according to official Pitt bio

2009 Scouting Report: Williams is described by his positional coach Greg Gattuso as “the heart of the defensive line”…has all the tools needed for an all-star senior season…a grizzled veteran whose strength and conditioning levels are at the highest of his career…a relentless performer in the trenches who thrives as both a run stopper and pass rusher.

2008: Played in 12 games, starting nine…missed Oct. 18 Navy game (concussion)… had 25 tackles, 8.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks…had season-high three tackles in four different games, including West Virginia, Iowa, Bowling Green and in the Sun Bowl vs. Oregon State…had career-high 1.5 sacks vs. Louisville… was the defensive recipient of the Ed Conway Award, annually given to the most improved players of spring drills.

2007: Played in all 12 games, making seven starts…started six of the final seven contests of the season…had 29 tackles, eight TFLs and three sacks…had a career-high seven tackles with 2.5 TFLs at Rutgers…had six tackles at Louisville and also had a nine-yard sack…had six stops and a three-yard sack vs. Navy…making his first career start at Michigan State, had three tackles and an eight-yard sack.
