While we had a great time at RCMH the past couple of days, it’s time for us to head back home and give the wife a break on baby-duty. Some tidbits that we’ve come to hear or had time to chew on during our stay at Radio City:
1) Ducasse – Some of you have already heard this, but we hear that the Jets were targeting Ducasse in the first round of the draft. When Wilson slipped, they were thrilled that he fell that far and felt compelled to take him. Now what I don’t know anything about is Odrick, who you think would have to habe been a target too. While very few pundits had Ducasse as a first rounder, the Jets reportedly did … consider that last year Rex Ryan said that “we had a first round grade” on Shonn Greene too, who went all the way to the third round, and the Jets were unable to do anything about until that point beacuse of their unloading for Mark Sanchez.
2) Wilson – Like the O-Line, it’s crazy to consider the embarrassment of riches that the Jets now have at CB — three first round picks, all pretty young. While we all know what Darrelle is capable of, and with a revamped secondary, it’s going to make an already good secondary even better — wow.
3) Holmes & Edwards – While some might feel that the Jets left the first two days of the draft with no movement, something that Trader Mike rarely does .. consider that the Jets had to give up some real bargaining leverage when he traded for both Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes. The trend seems to be that Tanny seems to like to trade next-year picks for established vets, while only using this-year picks to move around in the draft. Giving up picks next year is expensive business, just ask the Patriots who’ve made an art of collecting premium picks next year for this year’s need. All to say, the Jets didn’t have much juice to move around, and they are not about to stupidly throw away 2011 picks on whims, so be sure to consider that the Jets ‘drafted’ two receivers, one of which who’s already played 3/4 of a season for the team as a starter.
4) Quiet Leader – With some turnover in the secondary, the team has asked Darrelle to bring the unit along and to coach up some of the younger guys. I heard an anecdote that when Cromartie came to the team he said to Darrelle, “I wanna be like you when I grow up.”
5) Spygate – While the papers made it out that Mangini had it in for his old boss, we now know the truth, which is that it was the cameraman’s own stupidity for being in the wrong place at the wrong time shooting the wrong part of the field .. nothing vindictive.
