News: Faneca Release Official

by Bent on April 24th, 2010 at 1:25 pm

Adam Schefter breaks the news on twitter that the Jets have already released G Alan Faneca.

It’s being reported that the Jets are going to have to pay him $5.25m, but will save $7.5m by cutting him. However, the Jets often have a mechanism in their contracts whereby the money owed to him is defrayed by anything a new team pays him, so the overall cash saving may prove to be more than $2.25m. Laveranues Coles had such a clause in his contract, for example.

This move is unlikely to have saved them any cap space in 2011, compared with if they had waited until next year to cut him.

Best of luck to Alan for the future.

What is the meaning of this?

  2. avatar Abs5 says:

    What are we doing why

  3. avatar Eric in StL says:

according to cimini, it’s about performance. what that tells me is the replacement is on the current team. must think slauson, hunter, or turner is better and who are we to doubt the best oline coach in footballl?

  4. avatar Jake says:

Probably couldn’t get anything for him.. sad.

  5. avatar nyckage says:

Yea Faneca kinda Sucks in Pass protection, and the Future is Sanchez, not Greene or Mcknight, Teams have proved they can find halfbacks from all over the draft.

  6. avatar Pdubbs says:

They say he was ranked 30th in pass protection…. I am happy to put some youth in between D’Brick and Mangold.

  7. avatar Jake says:

And since the Jets didn’t draft a DE or OLB, they BETTER find a OLB or DE that will be GOOD as a UDFA.

  8. prediction: he will be signed before the day is over

  9. avatar James in TN says:

Oh well, still isn’t as bad as signing Jason Taylor.

  10. avatar nyckage says:

Scratch what I said, Greene is very important, it’s just that, they can’t let Sanchez get sacked all the time.

  11. avatar Rhassin says:

I thought he made 7.5 with 5.25 guaranteed?

  12. avatar Rhassin says:

if the article is correct the saving are fantastic with the youth upgrade. but all we can save i think is 2.25 which is garbage

  13. avatar GP says:

Maybe we can sign a tacking dummy to put in at LG on passing downs, protect Sanchez a little bit more

  14. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

where did the jets get another 7th rd pick from

  15. avatar alex says:

can someone break down what the good things are from the last couple days. I like our first round draft pick, but the moves after that have just been confusing. Why did we let Faneca go? And what are we doing for the defensive line?

  16. avatar Revis Christ says:

And the dolphins draft reshad jones, un believable

  17. avatar Bent says:

“I thought he made 7.5 with 5.25 guaranteed?”

That’s why the article says this: It’s being reported that the Jets are going to have to pay him $5.25m, but will save $7.5m by cutting him.

Off topic, according to Rod Boone, Rex Ryan said that he expects Ropati Pitoitua to contribute much more next year, so there you have it from the horse’s mouth. They must be high on him to have not drafted a lineman and Rex -a DL coach by trade- should know what he’s talking about.

  18. avatar George from Bklyn says:

Can someone please tell me what the thought process was behind our ENTIRE DRAFT??? Was getting rid of Leon Washington (one of our most electric players in YEARS) worth drafting an eventual replacement for Tony Richardson?

I realize we took a OG in the second round, but is he good enough to replace a SIX time pro bowler in Faneca? And how could we draft Joe McKnight when there were SOOO many other pressing needs (like an eventual replacement at NT for Kris Jenkins, or some depth at pass rusher)?

I’m seriously befuddled by what the logic was in the Jets war room.

  19. avatar nicko says:

i will put my trust in Tanny, REx and Callahan and hope they know what they are doing…….on the surface i dont love this Faneca move….i dont mind moving Leon, he will never be the same with this injury…….Kinda like Chad Morton…pro bowler, hurt, released by Jets, and then he was nevrer the same…

  20. avatar coopaloop says:

Only the jets would be 30 minutes from the SB and try to overhaul the team and make it worse.
I was super confident going into the draft and then wilson made it higher. Since then its taken a nose dive. Thanks jets it did feel weird being an optimistic jet fan

  21. avatar Rhassin says:

How are we saving 7.5 if we have to pay 5.25? My math says thats only 2.75 savings?

  22. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent—

I think Faneca was terrible for the first three quarters of 2009, but I don’t see eating that $5.2 mil in salary. And I can’t see how the Jets get out of paying most of it, even if another team signs AF.

If I’m the GM of another team, I sign Faneca (if I sign him at all) for only one year, and sign him for the minimum.

First, Faneca was terrible for the first three quarters of 2009, so I’m looking for him to prove himself in 2010.

Second, he’s getting up in years, and I don’t know if I’d take a risk on him for anything beyond one year.

Third, the Jets have to pay my player’s salary if I sign him for the minimum for one year. What’s my incentive for signing him for more than one year, or more than the minimum?

Remember the Jets couldn’t trade this guy for anything at all. Which means there’s not a hell of a lot of GMs beating down Faneca’s door.

  23. avatar Harry says:

Do we really need a pass rushing DE/OLB anyway? I have a lot of faith in Jamaal Westerman.

  24. avatar Rhassin says:

    i mean 2.25

  25. avatar Rhassin says:

Beyond kyle wilson this draft is a la herm edwards doug jolley and mike nugent

  26. avatar alex says:

I had a feeling that we would make more use of Ropati this year, but we need more. Any ideas on what free agents they will go after when the draft is done. And does their final four status hurt their ability to pick up these free agents.

  27. avatar Bent says:

Go here for TJB live draft chat – http://www.chatzy.com/741333870562

  28. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

so wait, let me get this stright.

Faneca gave up the 3rd most sacks in the NFL last year but he came on strong at the end of the year.

Didn’t we throw the ball like 5 times a game at the end of the season? Which would explain that.

but didn’t we throw the ball the least amount of times the entire year, but he was still 3rd in sacks.

    That’s pretty bad.

I really don’t understand most of the hate here. We cut an old lineman who cant pass block anymore. Any linemen in the NFL can run block, or they wouldn’t be in the NFL. We need to protect our QB.

Ya’ll are just so negative all the time man. I highly doubt this makes any difference.

  29. avatar wyojim says:

This is friggin’ stupid. Pete Kendall redux.

Let me get this straight: We have the league’s top running game, and we get rid of our two leading backs and Pro Bowl guard?

Tannenbaum may be outsmarting himself. I am dismayed by the trade of Leon Washington, and I hate the Jason Taylor signing.

Why not keep Leon and draft a young pass rusher? Have depth at OL?

  30. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

first leon held out last year for money. played broke his leg, then did not show up to off season work outs, which rex clearly wanted him to do, because he wants more money.

Clearly Leon put himself in the dog house.

  31. avatar ramble914 says:

Rex and Tanny bring us to within 30 minutes of the SB with a rookie QB and RB; a newly added WR and a new defensive system and everyone is crapping themselves over an old lineman who has outlived his usefulness? We still have 4/5 of an elite OL.

I am sure Turner or even Slauson can step in and at least hold the fort, we should be ok.

  32. avatar ramble914 says:

The wheels feel off the Thomas Jones bus.
Leon is damaged goods and will not be the same.
Faneca is old and a liability in the passing game.

    Time to move on.

  33. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

the new kid, is already projected to be a starter as a guard, he just needs to develop into a tackle.

Remember this kid will play in between, D’brick and mangold. Which if he works out well, means we have 3 young studs on our line for the future.

  34. avatar ramble914 says:

Sorry, I was typing too fast.

  35. avatar TOON2388 says:

Would understand this if 2010 was not an uncapped year

  36. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

its not about money. the dude cant perform anymore. remember when we signed him 2 years ago everyone was saying he is done.

its 2 years later, and he had the 3rd most sacks given up by any lineman last year on a team that threw the ball a lot less then any other team.

Obviously we are going to let sanchez loose a bit this year, we need to protect him.

  37. avatar reality jet fan says:

Johnny reefer , Have the jets ever made a bad move?

  38. avatar Bent says:

“Would understand this if 2010 was not an uncapped year”

For all intents and purposes, it isn’t. Every team in the league has its own self-imposed spending limit and, other than the Bears and the Redskins, every team in the league has set that limit at approximately what the cap would have been anyway (and some well below it).

Besides, although there is no cap saving and the financial saving is modest, I don’t think that was the motivation behind the deal. I thought Faneca had another year in him after the way he finished last year, but maybe his protection weakness had an impact on how they were able to run the offense.

  39. avatar reality jet fan says:

Just when i actually believe that maybe the jets are close to a superbowl reality sets in. Getting rid of leon and faneca but we signd pieces of garbage that real teams didnt want an jason taylor. This is why the jets never win and never will.

  40. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

they have made many bad moves. this just isnt one.

nugent, jolley, kendle, favre, and those are just in the last few years.

These moves are good moves, you will see, you guys just love to complain so you find something, anything to complain about.

Id rather have a young player who can pass block, then an old vet who cant.

sorry if that makes to much sense for you.

  41. avatar reality jet fan says:

I hope he goes to the pats or phins

  42. avatar reality jet fan says:

Who is the young player? Replacing alan faneca?

  43. avatar reality jet fan says:

    Forget superbowl dreams!

  44. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

umm the dude we just picked up in the draft. Vlad.

he is already projected to be a stater as a guard, he just need to develop in the sense of being a tackle.

do you read up on any of these draft picks or moves or do you just assume and make up your own decision without informed information?

  45. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

also, our two best line men.

D’brick and Mangold, they both started as rookies and we made the playoffs that year, so dont give me any of that noise.

  46. avatar reality jet fan says:

A kid from umass is going to replace alan faneca give me a break.Which part of the draft did you not like.

  47. avatar reality jet fan says:

Dbrick played better because of faneca he was nowhere near a 4th pick until faneca came. And we know faneca was the leader of that line.

  48. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

    key word WAS!

Faneca is OLD AND WASHED UP!

Brick and Mangold are now the leaders of this line.

do you know anything about football? the dude can not pass protect, sure he is a good run blocker BUT EVERY LINEMAN in the nfl can runblock.

You make your money on the pass protection.

We threw the ball a ton less then any other team last year and he was the 3rd worst pass protector in the league. Imagine how bad it will be when we start throwing the ball more.

We are getting younger and better on our line and people are complaining. Ya’ll make no sense.

  49. avatar JetsgoBIGorgohome says:

    Reefer,

I agree with you man. I think all of these moves are excellent moves. Sanchez is the future of this organization…NOT Faneca. Faneca was so god awful in pass defense that they HAD to do something. Why pick up another #1 WR in Holmes if you aren’t planning on throwing the ball. I think that the head office is making all the right moves.
I love Leon Washington but all the question marks around his leg injury has got to bear a lot of weight on this decision. Him not showing up to workouts and holding out last year for BIG time money when he obviously didn’t deserve it yet, didn’t hurt this decision. I think all these moves make them BETTER and if you guys are ticked about losing an aging OL that can’t pass protect then it’s going to be a long season for you guys. GO JETS!!

  50. avatar phil says:

The jets are claiming they alomst took this O Linemen in round 1. It that is true, then how do they not take him in round 2.

  51. avatar phil says:

Guy like faneca don’t get benched, you have to cut them so they are not hanging around and disgruntled.

lets not forget we have a top offensive line coach in Callahan. I’m sure he signed off on these moves, both the release, and the pick in round 2.

  52. avatar firstdown77 says:

eh. i dont feel bad for faneca – he was way too overhyped coming to the jets.

  53. avatar JetsgoBIGorgohome says:

I don’t think he was overhyped b/c in the beginning of his Jets career, his play was stellar and so was his leadership for a young Mangold and Ferguson. I just think that his age caught up to him. Now they have OL leadership in Mangold so they don’t have to rely on Faneca. It was a good move. I think the pieces are coming together nicely now.

  54. avatar Lageman says:

this doesnt make sense to me for a super bowl run. jets have zero depth at OL.

  55. avatar HomeOfTheJets says:

Tell me someone see this clip already

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCkCRm-EcMw

    Rex is too F’n Funny

  56. avatar Tos9987 says:

This is the dumbest move all off season .

I wanted to draft Fanacas replacement but so he could learn form him .

Why the F—k would you get rid of him and still pay more then half his salry in an uncapped year

  57. avatar JetsgoBIGorgohome says:

I don’t understand what the big deal about this is. Faneca was old and caused a lot of pressure leaks through the line. They have a clause on his contract that deducts money paid by the Jets that accrues from a new contract. They are saving 7.5 million dollars overall b/c he will not get his roster bonus either. This is a smart move. What is wrong with you people?

AND this is not an uncapped year for the Jets. The Jets, Colts, Vikings, and Saints are the only 4 teams that the uncapped rule doesn’t apply to b/c they were all in the Conference Championship games. How can you guys argue about stuff if you don’t know what you are talking about??

  58. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

    yeah, he’s done..

  59. avatar WW85 says:

Faneca was deteriorating but was the leader of the line & of the team-he was worth another year. We should have kept him & taken Cody instead of Ducasse. We could have dealt with guard after the lockout.

McKnight is electric. I’d have preferred another DL, but I guess if it’s average DL vs Mcknight, they went for talent.

  60. avatar Ari says:

This was definitely the move that I liked the least…just doesnt make sense to release Faneca today….he should have stayed for at least one more year….Idk…..not happy about this move

  61. avatar geoff says:

well, the moves are a bit shocking, but im not about to second guess ryan, who obviously tells his bosses what he needs. ryan is still in honeymoon mode due to an impressive first year, give the man the ingredients he requires, its carte blanche for the time being.

  62. avatar David says:

Vlad Decosse or Matt Slauson is an upgrade over Alan Faneca? No one could say that with a straght face, except the Head Coach did.

It was the money. But they knew how much they were going to have to pay him when they signed him.

An O line is like a Swiss watch. It takes years to jell. I’m a skeptic that the O line is going to be as good as it was last year. Remember what happened when they got rid of Kendell? Prove me wrong Coach!

  63. avatar JetsgoBIGorgohome says:

It is definitely going to be an upgrade for the PASS BLOCKING schemes. The run blocking is another story. Faneca is one of the best in run blocking but he is GOD AWFUL in pass blocking. I say it again…this was an excellent move and one that had to be done.

  64. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

Wow…I speechless. Don’t know what the ramifications are going to be here!

So much for a Super Bowl Run!

  65. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

You gotta be on drugs if this doesnt concern you at all though…

It could work very nicely…stick that big focker Vlad between Mangold and Brick and lets zone block teams into submission

    or

The kid could really struggle in line calls, missing assignments and sliding protection and wind up letting some d end blindside Sanchez and end our season…

They had a high grade on him thats for sure…only time will tell

  66. avatar WOJF says:

Faneca was a beast down the stretch and in the playoffs, his play improved as the season went on.

Hope they are right but going to be tough to replace especially with some raw kid from 1AA.

I suspect Woody moves to Faneca’s spot, Hunter starts at RT, the kid sits and learns.

Still makes no sense to unload the guy, replacing the leaders in the clubhouse with developmental projects and other teams trash is not a winning formula if you ask me.

  67. avatar gt73 says:

You hang onto Vernon Gholston yet you release Alan Faneca and Leon Washington over high contract numbers? Huh? I hope someone comes up with a logical system in the new collective bargaining agreement. This makes as much sense as the federal tax code.
