Film Room: Ryan Speaks About Rookies & Santonio’s Airport Incident

by Bassett on April 30th, 2010 at 2:16 pm

Jets head coach Rex Ryan reacts to the Santonio Holmes plane incident and talks about Kyle Wilson and Joe McKnight at rookie camp.
From FanHouse:

According to the Jets, Holmes refused to comply with the flight crew’s request to turn off his iPod as the plane was landing, and as a result an incident report was filed with the Allegheny Police Department. Holmes got off the plane and was met by officers who, according to the Jets, “reminded him about the rules.” There is no word on whether Holmes’ seatback and tray table were in their full upright and locked positions.

“This was kind of blown out of proportion, it seems like,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said at the team’s rookie minicamp. “He certainly should have turned off his iPod. When I speak to him, I’ll tell him that. He certainly should do that.”

bluntonio is a total dykk head,i cant stand him already

  2. avatar GP says:

Kyle Wilson is gonna be the truth.

  3. avatar Marvel(I wanted Mays) says:

12-4 here we come .. I’m so glad Rex is the coach, this guy won’t let anything stop us from being great .. iPod ? I’m 100% sure Rex laughed it off & went right back to work .. Go Jets ..

  4. avatar WW85 says:

Holmes better grow up fast. This incident on it’s own is not a huge deal, but combined with his pending suspension, it becomes more serious–I am sure the league will take a look.

Somebody on the team should straighten this guy out…if there is anyone that Santonio respects. The obvious guy would have been Faneca…Maybe Revis?

  5. avatar Dylan says:

The whole press conference is on newyorkjets.com. Rex mentioned Kevin Basped, Cory Reamer, Brian Jackson, and Jeff Cumberland

  6. avatar spentmiles says:

If one of the plane’s crew members tells you to do something, then why wouldn’t you do it? Regardless of on field production, I think we can all imagine what type of guy Santonio is.

  7. avatar jkjet64 says:

He’s an idiot. He should be on his best behavior and not looking to draw any attention too himself. The situation itself is not a big deal but it should tell you alot about him.

  8. avatar ramble914 says:

He needs to tow the team line, and keep his a$$ out of trouble. The only time we should hear his name mnentioned is on game day!

  9. avatar Jim says:

Flight attendants can be a bit tough to deal with at times. I’ve had many experiences with grumpy, obnoxious flight attendants so I won’t judge until I know the whole story. He probably should have turned the iPod off but I’m sure theres more to this than just being asked politely to turn off his iPod and then flipping out on an innocent airline employee. At least I hope theres more to the story…

  10. avatar BigKatt says:

Since Wilson is #20, can we officially make his nickname K-Dub? It’s perfect.

  11. avatar Mike D. says:

McKnight said he was “kinda mad at first” when he saw No25 (Bush’s #) hangin in locker.”Evidently I’m still in the shadow again”

  12. avatar Daniel M says:

Holmes is a real schmuck. Isn’t he?

  13. avatar EastSide says:

And yet somehow, when the corner’s on his butt and the safety is desperately chasing him to the endzone, he will seem much more “mature”.

  14. avatar BigKatt says:

    EastSide – you’re 100% right about that

  15. avatar Steve in Philly says:

Rex better lay the hammer down on 420io. Not turning off your iPod may tarnish the shield!

  16. avatar belvey631 says:

Under the Mangini regime Holmes would’ve been fined $10,000.00

  17. avatar WW85 says:

This is a contract year for Holmes. I can’t imagine any greater motivation to behave. I guess he can’t help being a doucheee

  18. avatar tish says:

Rex may have blown this little incident off, but Tannenbaum is the one who will hear from the owner and the league. It is the apparent sense of entitlement and immaturity that iritates me. Rex may need to threaten him with the ultimate punishment: “I’ll sit on you”

  19. avatar Tom B says:

All of you jumping on Holmes for this need to get a life. Maybe some day the airlines will stop being stupid about electronic devices. Having your iPod on does absolutely nothing to hinder and airplane landing.

  20. avatar JPM says:

This isn’t the airline’s fault. They have rules on electronic devices and anyone who has ever flown knows about them. It doesn’t matter whether you think a rule is stupid or not. This does not bode well – shows he challenges even the simplest of rules. I wish the veterans luck trying to get through to this guy.

  21. avatar tomg says:

    joethejet,
My exact reaction and opinion when on heard about this on the WFAN radio.

  22. avatar miketaliaferro says:

    It’s simple.

Holmes doesn’t DO Pittsburgh. That’s why they shipped him out.

So, we just leave him home in December when we go to play the Steelers and all will be well.

  23. avatar tomg says:

Now people know why pittsburgh got rid of this clown for a fifth round pick, there is always a reason why. If santonio had half a brain he would know why all electronic devices need to be shut off on a plane.

  24. avatar Dookie says:

Just catch passes – dont care about anything else.

  25. avatar Sexy Rexy says:

I agree with everyone else, how hard is it turn off your damn IPOD? I mean the people are working hard at the airplane, and with all these terrorist threats nowadays how hard is to keep your electronic devices turned off? Oh well if Sexy Rexy blows it off, then I’ll forget it about it as well. Bluntonio better shape up, if he turns into Kerry ”Diva” Rhodes then I might have a change of heart on this guy.

  26. avatar Harvlis says:

Big Jenks needs to sit Santonio down and read him the riot act. All we need is to lose him for the season, because of something as stupid as this. Who argues with the stewardess, when she tells you to turn off all electronic devices?

Santonio, we want to root for you but, doing crap like this is going to make that hard to do. Wise up and stay out of the limelight. You will have plenty of time to show off on Hard Knocks.

  27. avatar NamVetJet says:

It is amazing that you have to ‘tell” a grown man to follow the rules of flying in an airplane.

And Tom B., it is not his job to protest the “stupid” rules of the airlines (and acually the federal government). He probably thought that the illegality of weed was stupid also—-that cost him 4 games. Please Santonio grow up.

Here’s what ESPN is now saying at of about 4pm, Friday:
    ______________________________________

Earlier reports from two Pittsburgh-area television stations had said Holmes was escorted off the plane after being “disruptive.”

However, Holmes got off the plane by himself, and police officers reminded him of complying with flight regulations. The wide receiver was not charged.

Speight says the report was filed with the Allegheny County Police Department after Holmes’ flight landed.

Allegheny County police reiterated in a statement that Holmes was not removed from the flight.

“He was asked to remove his iPod [at one point], in which he complied,” the statement said.

In other words, the original story was false.

    It’s a bs story.

  30. avatar JetsFan65 says:

Yea alot of you guys are too quick to trash our players and team, we need to relax and know the whole story before making all these negative comments. We need to give our team the benefit of the doubt and support them.

You guys won’t be complaining about Holmes when he’s being extremely productive on the field.

  31. avatar JetsFan4Life says:

Everyone chillax, Santonio was simply groovin’ and never heard the announcement b/c of the morning wake and bake routine…what’s a poor boy to do when you’re going to Vegas to play!

  32. avatar miketaliaferro says:

    harvlis,

Big Jenks needs to sit ON Holmes, make him a couch.

Then tell him he’s not getting up until Holmes promises in front of the entire team to not be a fool.

    Just might get his attention.

  33. avatar WoodyWoodChuck says:

Honestly, these airlines are a pain in the a$$ with these stupid rules. If I had Holmes’ money I would buy a share in a pvt jet and go where I want when I want without the dumb rules and without giving these bozo’s my money.

I’m glad I became a pilot so I don’t have to deal with their nonsense. I don’t have to wait in security lines or deal with any of the other crap they put you through.

  34. avatar KLECKOTOCANTON says:

Whether a minor deal or not, what kind of schmuck refuses to turn off an IPOD when a flight attendant asks?

The rule is not just for electronic safety. There were discussions after 9/11 that this was one way for cabin crew to determine if any passengers are unruly or could be signs of something else.

Planes are most at risk during takeoff and landing. if someone had plans to do damage to a plane they would do it then & maybe with a remote device.

These rules aint just for sh… & giggles.

  35. avatar michael says:

“There is no word on whether Holmes’ seatback and tray table were in their full upright and locked positions.”

No, nobody else thought this sounded funny?

  36. avatar ML says:

You see Rex’s face light up when he talks about wilson…That is very telling. Really seems like we made a nice pickup there..

    Me:

That makes no sense. Are they trying to determine if someone is willing to take their orders like sheep, or trying to prevent harm to passengers? You mean their method is to try to antagonize passengers to see if they will become unruly?

If I was trying blow up a plane and I had a remote device to do it. I would NOT make it obvious and I WOULD shut it off when told to do so. Then I would pull it out of my pocket and blow the eff’er up as soon as they left. Actually, all you would have to do is press the button with the device in your pocket. Nobody would see it coming.

These rules will not deter a bomber. Period.

Some devices could have an effect on some instruments in the cockpit, but none of them are critical and an iPod is NOT one of those devices.

  38. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    KLECKOTOCANTON—

This is a bs story, which was originally reported incorrectly. And then re-reported incorrectly again and again.

AP reported earlier today (and as ESPN re-reported):

    _____________________________________

Holmes got off the plane and police officers reminded him of complying with flight regulations, but the wide receiver was not charged with anything.

Allegheny County police said in a statement that Holmes was not removed from the flight, contrary to some published reports.

“He was asked to remove his iPod (at one point), in which he complied,” the statement said.
