Link: McKnight’s Tough First Day

Joe McKnight had a bit of a rough day yesterday, as JP Pelzman explains.

“I thought Joe McKnight looked good,” coach Rex Ryan said, adding with a smile, “when he wasn’t throwing up.”

It happened midway through practice, when McKnight vomited near a goalpost.

“I felt a little dehydrated [Friday], and didn’t drink a lot water, so now I’m going to start drinking a lot of water and keep myself hydrated,” McKnight said. “It was nerves. I was nervous at first, just getting back out, playing football and trying to show what I can do.”

At first, McKnight’s pass-catching may have made his coaches a bit queasy, too, as he had several drops. On one, he made a nifty move to get by linebacker Ezra Butler, but then flubbed the pass, prompting one assistant coach to yell, “too much shake and bake.”

But he also showed elusiveness and a burst in the open field, reminiscent of former Jet Leon Washington, traded to Seattle last week, and that other No. 25 with the Saints.

Although McKnight clearly wasn’t happy with the uniform number, he said philosophically, “They already gave it to me. No sense in changing it.”

“I certainly never gave him that number,” Ryan said, smiling, “but wow, maybe we’ll change it. … I guarantee nobody thought about that.

Remember too that Leon was running many a lap at his first mini-camp. This seems par for the course, so in time we’re sure he’ll settle in.

Im sure he wants to make a name for himself but if he turns out to be a Reggie Bush that doesn’t get hurt as much he should be happy.

I definetely remember Leon’s rookie season, he struggled and that’s why they put his locker next to Curtis Martin’s so he’d learn to be a pro from the consummate pro.

didnt leon had a fumbling problem his rookie training camp?? where manginis penalty laps actually help solve that…i think mcknights problem is he hasnt been working out recently cause of a suspension the las couple games of his college career…if he still cramping and pukiing in regular training camp then we might have a problem

If I hear one more person say he is the “new Leon” I will punch them in the face.

They should change his jersey number to 40 to honor a former Chicago Bear whom he resembles in play and could only hope to emulate, Gale Sayers.

I get the feeling McKnight will feel he has something to prove and could end up one of the steals of the draft….just a hunch.

The kid is not Leon… Leon had a much lower center of gravity and was a physical runner for his size. This kid will need to add some muscle and get a little tougher, but Tomlinson should be an excellent mentor.

    About the #25
I love that Rex is playing head games with the rookie! The kid has a world of talent, but may need a little kick in the ass.
This is the sign of a good coach. If you can’t handle the heat, get the F—- out of the kitchen!
