Who says the NY media blows things out of proportion?
Ridiculous story from the moment it was published!

I think this is a small example of just how out of control media coverage is in this country in general… Whether it’s sports, politics, news…

This was a totally bs story for the beginning, and I said so on this blog on Friday afternoon.
The bogus story originated with a local Pittsburgh TV station on Friday, and spread like fire in a dry forest all over radio, TV and the internet.
And at about 4pm on Friday, AP took the lead in debunking that earlier overhyped story, quoting the same quote that Jane McManus would later quote herself (& which I also posted on this blog at about 4:30pm):
“[Holmes] was asked to remove his iPod, in which he complied. There’s no further information to report.”
Later on Friday, Jane didn’t have much to add to that AP story. But Saturday, Jane did a good job of taking the investigation a step further, with the follow-up with Rex and what Santonio told him.
Thanks for this, Jane. I wish other news sources would take note, and correct the earlier smear and bs.
Would also like to see someone’s head roll at that TV station in Pittsburgh.

Was definitely blown out of proportion … but it’s still a lot of d-baggery on the part of Holmes to refuse to turn it off when a flight attendant says to do so. What is the point for him being a defiant jerk other than that’s just the way he is?

“. . .it’s still a lot of d-baggery on the part of Holmes to refuse to turn it off when a flight attendant says to do so.”
Holmes DID turn the ipod off. He just kept the earbuds in his ears.
This was an entirely bogus story, AdamW, start to finish.
Here’s Rex describing the situation:
_________________________________________When the flight attendant came by, she said, “Will you please turn off your (iPod)?”. . . . [Holmes] said, “Yeah, no problem.” Well, he was tired and never took out the ear things. He laid back down. When the lady came back and asked again, he said, “I did. I can hear every word you’re saying. I have it off.” He literally handed the ear things to the lady sitting beside him and she goes, “Yeah, you can’t hear anything.” They were off.

Maybe i’ve read the Santonio story on too many sites.really tired of hearing about nothing.

you know im really getting tired of every1s nonsense about chacter issues…no1 cared about things like this in the past but since goodle became comish every1 wants sinless players on their teams…well here some news to the iggnorant…it aint gonna happen…most these guys (with all the talent in the world) you all want to play for your team are from some of the worst HOODS in the country…so to expect them to be god fearing is actually very amusing…
take holmes for an EX:…be happy that all he has is an attitude problem and that he only smokes weed…im not saying its good to smoke weed…that isn’t the point…the point is hes not doing the things he would be doing if he wasn’t in the NFL…being on the block selling his drugs and carring a glock ready to pop off any suspecting fool coming his way…so to expect them to be on their best behavior at all times is just ridiculous… the worse thing to do is to NAG a person who has issues…it takes time to change…it doesn’t happen over night…what he has to do in order to change is surround himself with good people…no party goers…then he’ll change in time without him even knowing it…ab=nyway,im just saying enough with the character issues football players have…im just sick to death with all the over hyped BS when it comes to this subject…peace…

Ben Nevis: Rex may have told that version of the story, but it seems kind of odd to me that the version he said (and you relayed) would cause the attendants to call the police from the air and have them greet Holmes at the gate, as written in the official report:
On Thursday April 29, 2010 at 21:00 hours, aircom requested officers to gate D-77 for a report of an incident aboard the aircraft no other information was available. Myself and Officer XXXXXXX arrived and spoke to the flight attendant XXXXXX Colgan Air who stated a passenger wouldn’t turn off his ipod when requested to do so and requested officers speak to him. The passenger was identified as Santanio Bernard HOLMES XXXX. He was advised that all instructions from the flight crew must be adhered to during flights, a TSA regulatory agent was unavailable and determined to be unnecessary for this matter. HOLMES stated that he understood and the matter was resolved. Detail completed without incident at 21:15 hours.

According to AP, the Allegheny County Police also stated that when Holmes was asked to turn off his ipod, he “complied.”
It’s entirely possible that Holmes did turn off his ipod, left the earbuds in, and the flight attendant thought he had not turned it off, and overreacted.
We don’t know this, but it seems plausible. We also don’t know the reason that the police were called in. Some have speculated that the fault lies with Holmes. Some have speculated that the fault lies with the flight attendant.
Whatever happened here is still not entirely clear, but it is indeed clear that the story was overblown by bloggers and the press.

AdamW,-”What is the point for him being a defiant jerk other than that’s just the way he is?”
You’re just as quick to judge as the media. He complied and turned off the iPod. He just kept the buds in his ears and feel asleep. When the fight attendant asked him again, he removed the buds and had a passenger next to him verify there was no sound. The fight attendant was stupid for reporting a non issue. The media was overzealous for reporting a non-issue without fact checking. Which leaves you a “defiant jerk” for not reading all the police facts related to this non-issue.

I hope that this ridiculous non-story that was innaccurately covered by the media gives Holmes an additional reason to stay outta trouble. The press is overly eager to catch him screwing up and ready to piss all over him when it happens.
