Kevin Clark of the Wall Street Journal writes that with all the hard work that the Jets did in the offseason, that while the moves in the draft could pay big dividends in years to come, but that it was more about depth than frontline help for 2010.
"I think it’s more relaxed, people are just trying to find their roles and not be that one big star," said Marcus Henry, a third-year wide receiver who worked out at mini-camp. "It’s a lot calmer now."
The calmness was reflected during rookie mini-camp. The Mark Sanchez mania of last season was replaced on the field by stories that were much less consequential.
Mr. McKnight vomited during one practice, for instance, while Mr. Holmes got in some trouble on an airplane over the weekend.
"This draft was great because Mike Tannenbaum put us in a position to where we can go into the draft and just really take the best guys," Mr. Ryan said of his general manager.
"A guy to save the franchise, we don’t need that. We just needed to get a little bit better."
The plan for Wilson is to play nickel until such point as he starts … consider it a hedge against Cromartie and Rex’s insatiable desire for CBs. If Ducasse is the player that Rex and Callahan consider him to be, then he can play interior on the line for now, but could be D’Brick’s bookend in time. John Conner is the future for blocking for the Jets backfield, even if T-Rich is the present.

Outside of the kicking situation and ( for some the Jason Taylor nonsense ) this offseason has been tremendous.
There is little to not like. The team has a ton of young talent mixed with some veteran players that has all of the makings of a bigtime team.
Wilson, Ducasse, McKnight and Conner are just the latest additions to a team that should be very good for a long time
-
So the plan is to have Slauson and Ducasse compete for the vacated Faneca spot, correct?
-
John Z
I would assume they would want Ducasse to play LG this year and kick out to RT in 2011 with Slauson then joining the OL at LG
-
Agreed AKA Drew…
I’m going to need to have a few Gin and Tonics before I watch a Nick Folk kick… but supposedly they like what they see from him so far
-
I’m actually guessing the opposite happens – Slauson starts at LG this year, then Vlad joins the OL next season at either LG or RT. I just figure Slauson’s had a lot more reps in Callahan’s scheme.
-
Its all about money.
If it were about depth they would have kept Faneca.
-
Not ALL about money, but quite frankly based on Alan’s declining performance over the last two years, on a risk(he continues to decline) /reward(we get the same and free up money) it was a sound decision.
-
I don’t think that you can call it a sound decision when we have no idea how Ducasse is going to perform. We should have kept Faneca until August when we could see how Ducasse is playing……….
-
Cutting Faneca now was a lot better for Faneca than cutting him August. From a selfish fan standpoint, I’d have appreciated the security blanket but Faneca deserved a chance to find a new home. I think the the front office is more sensitive to veterans than they are given credit for.

i was hoping marcus henry was going to become something even if just a redzone threat but he still hasn’t….kind of disapointing.

4 draft picks equal depth?
-
AKA Drew,
I see it in reverse. I think Slauson will start at LG this season, while Ducasse gets a year under his belt and next year he starts for Woody at RT.
-
4 picks to me says, the team only valued four players. We could have very well kept our picks, and brought back what?
-
4 draft picks + one UDFA that the Draft advisory board thought would go in the 3 rd round+picks that brought in Holmes, Edwards and Cromartie = DEPTH. Who can say that there 5th round pick will be a SB MVP and is currently a top 10 player at his position now, from snap one of the preseason?
-
It’s been a long, long, long time since we had a team with which we (fans) feel very good about. So, let’s enjoy the summer thinking of the great team that is the Jets. Given our history sometimes is hard for us Jet fans to take it easy and enjoy the moment and enjoy our team and what seems to be a bright future….
-
No way Slauson beats out Ducasse the Senior Bowl Ducasse looked fast but out of sinc, within a week he learned what he should do and dominated. Another thing is by the time we get to game one in the regular season Ducasse will be the starter. Maybe, maybe, next year Slauson replaces Woody. Now that is more believable than a 7th rounder last year beating out a second round and some projected as a posable first round talent.

Fellas,
Have you all forgot about the many UDFA attended rookie mini-camps? There are plenty of diamonds in that bunch.
Draft picks are like a bunch of chocolates and you never know what you get…
-
You guys have to stop only seeing 4 draft picks the trade of the other picks count too.
#3 Edwards
#5 Holmes

For all the talk of RB struggles, I hope Danny Woodhead gets a legitimate shot. the guy is the all-time leading NCAA rusher, albeit from Chadron State.
-
Woodhead may not even make the team. If he does it will be on special teams.

I really think Ducasse can step in this year and contribute. If he can reach that potential with Bill Callahan, then our O-Line will be impenetrable (googled that).
God I wish it was August already… : X
