Link: Jets 2001 Playbook

playbook playbook2

In case you’ve ever wondered what an NFL Playbook looks like, here’s an example from the Jets from 2001 that commenter JetObsessed28 recently found one online and wanted to share it with you (WORKING LINK on TJB).  Since it’s a beefy file (15 MB) we’ll set it up to be available for the next seven days.

I found a link on a football-only BitTorrent site while searching for old Jets games … [and] had several NFL and NCAA playbooks from the 80s, 90s and 2000’s.. The only Jets one was from 2001..  It was interesting, to me, to see the terminology, formations, plays, check-with me’s… it’s pretty extensive and neat to comb through, and put me in a day-dream as to what these rookies are seeing/learning, and what they have to cram for in order to get ready for OTA’s and camp, etc…

While technology has changed since then, the Jets have a system that allows them to watch gamefilm and use “playbooks” online, this is still the old standby.  So when you hear that the new Jets heads are swimming, consider that the game has only gotten even more complex in the last ten years, and that OC Brian Schottenheimer is known in particular for the thickness of his binders.

Our thanks to JetsObsessed28 for sending this in!

    2001?

Draw to Curtis, draw to Curtis, throw to Wayne.

    End of playbook.

  6. avatar Jose Aldo says:

Doesn’t look a whole lot different than a high school football playbook. Whoop dee doo.

  7. avatar BigKatt says:

Bent – Tell me about it. I think Curtis might have the record for running the most draw plays in a career.

  8. avatar BigKatt says:

And yea, i cant see it either.

  9. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

Jose, i can tell you that this thing is about 250 pages more than my HS playbook..

Bent, you’re funny.. very true.. seeing Martin run a draw on 90% of all 3rd and longs was very frustrating!

I hope you all find this as interesting as i did.. I love the breakdowns of possible defensive fronts, the terms that go along with that.. motions, protections..
There’s sooo much that an NFL player has to learn, and finding this thing really made me appreciate that..

Just play Madden .. I use to just watch football not really knowing much technical stuff but I started playing Madden like six years ago & I can easily call out a NFL play pre-snap just by lookin at alignments & match-ups.. I called the Coles TD on Lowery in the playoffs , my cousin was impressed .. It was man coverage & Lowery was giving him 10 yards of cushion so it wasn’t that hard to predict ..(I think it was an out route)

  13. avatar Andrew Weiss says:

    Herm used a playbook?

  14. avatar BamBam says:

  20. avatar Bassett says:

all … it’s up on the blog … see link above

  21. avatar BigKatt says:

Marvel – when ever i see Lowery on the field i think that his man is scoring a TD! And yea, it was an out.

  22. avatar Jeff says:

Remember in 04, Curtis was the man at running the draw. I think he gained over 1k yds on just that draw play alone that season!!

  23. avatar Reprocity says:

I use to work at Kinkos in Albany and one of the Giants came in and asked if he could make a copy of the defensive play book. Some rookie fa… The book was pretty impressive. It was like a god dam phone book!

  24. avatar Marvel says:

BigKatt- lol yea his cover skills are a bit lacking .. I’m even starting to think his tackling skills are a bit over hyped .. But he is a serviceable 4th CB ..

  25. avatar StillSackDancin says:

Link works just fine. However, the playbook is 330 pages. I’m gonna have to down a 5 hour energy in order to get through this tonight. Thanks Bassett, this was a pleasant surprise!

What is the name of the football only bit torrent site?

  27. avatar Bent says:

    Ten yard torrents?

  28. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

    That’s the one…

  29. avatar seanmac31 says:

Actually, 2001 was the year of the fullback counter to Richie Anderson. That was the base play that they built a lot of the offense on.

  30. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

I thought Hackett only called draw plays on third and long…
