Rookie Pool Allocations Announced

by Bassett on May 8th, 2010 at 10:10 am

Pasquarelli gets the numbers and much like the process that’s used to create the compensatory draft picks the much anticipated “Rookie Pool” numbers have been figured out and released and the Jets with just four picks, have the second lowest  total to the Chicago Bears (5 picks @ $2.003) and the Jets 4 picks netted a cool $ 2.660 million.

A record 13 teams received allocations of $5 million or more this year. Ten clubs, one more than a year ago, were allocated less than $4 million. The Chicago Bears, who did not have a choice in the first two rounds because of previous trades, and who chose only five players in all, had the lowest rookie pool, $2.003 million. The New York Jets, who had a league-low four selections, were the only other franchise under $3 million.

As I stated in a previous post now we have just under 3 million for the rookie pool plus us having saved about 29 million for the cost cutting moves we conducted this off season now we will be about 31 mil under the cap and that will give us enough dough to resign our core talent and maybe one or two of our 1 year mercenaries as some people like to describe them…….Im loving it because we have pretty much secured our future for about 5-6 years down the road!!!!

I have one question, do we know if we are going to take a cap hit next year for the Kerry Rhodes cut, it is like 7 million in dead money isn’t it?

    Jeffdolfini,

Rhodes wasn’t cut. He was traded for a 4th round pick.

Jeff – Even if he was cut, the cap hit wouldn’t have been that much because it turns out that his roster bonus and salary for 2010 were only guaranteed for injury.

As Dylan says, trading him meant that some of the cap hit simply moves to Arizona instead of being dead money.

There is actually a potential cap hit because non-prorated bonus money for 2011 and beyond could bite in 2011, but this depends on the new CBA and isn’t very much anyway.

Total potential dead money in 2011 is $7.3m but some or all of it may not apply once the cap returns.

I go into more detail about the Jets future cap situation in a post that will hit TJB tomorrow morning.

If it is 7.3 I actually think that this is a very large cap hit for a player that is not on our team. That could end up stopping us from signing either Holms or Edwards after this season. Just because you trade someone does not mean that the guaranteed money hit just goes away. We will have a hit for him and it is unfortunate because we have so many players up for new contracts after this year.

No, Jeff, that’s the total for ALL cuts, not just Rhodes.

As I say, hopefully they will get relief for some or all of it.

As you’ll see tomorrow, even if most of it does bite, that might not prevent them having the option to retain everyone if that’s the plan.
