In this morning’s MMQB column Peter King takes the time to interview Tom Brady. When asked about the Jets moves this offseason, Brady had nothing but compliments for his arch rivals.
“They’re always a team that gives us problems, and they’ve sure made a lot of changes this offseason,” he said. “When your archrivals do as much as they’ve done, you’ve got to pay attention. They went to the conference championship game, they’ve got a great defense, they can run the ball as well as anyone, and they’ve got a great young quarterback who can make a lot of plays. Our whole division’s improved. To win the division, we’ll really have to earn it this year.”

wow. absolutely stunning. brady praising the opponent. what’s belichick going to say.
jets fans really need to get over their insecurity complex and then maybe we won’t get tabloid articles like this anymore.
-
keep spending time in LA with your kids Tommy. i cant wait till our D introduces you to the new field turf at the meadowlands
-
Jets-Pats is a one sided rivalry. Notice has Brady referred to NYJ as the “archrivals.”
Yet, every Jet player and fan would tell you that their archrival is the Dolphins.
As a Jets fan, I find this hilarious.
-
I e-mailed Peter King the following:
Will you be spending this much with time with the other 20+ QBs that did not win a playoff game last year?
-
Shamas,
Not a rivalry? It’s not as one-sided as you think. Yes, The Jets have a .333 winning % in this decade. But overall, in their history, the Jets are winning the head-to-head battle.
-
Very gracious of Tom. He’s still a ****sucker though.
-
He probably just doesn’t want to say anything negative because then Rex could use it to fire the team up.
-
The Dolphins were certainly the rivals in the 80s & much of the ’90s, But from the beginning of the Tuna bowls, I’d say it has switched to the Pats for the past 10+ years. Dolphins are a close second.
-
Gee, thanks Tom. It means a lot.
-
don’t play nice now tom….sanchez is still gonna take your girl and rex and our D will still be out for blood next season…
-
in my opinion, the i take the pats as more of a rivalry just cause i hate them more, mainly cause belicheck is such a dulche.
-
Bent,
I don’t see it that way at all (the actual rivalries, not the comment). I’m not sure what Shamas was saying, but I see how he probably meant it now. I don’t think it’s an “A hates B, B hates C, C hates A” type of situation. It’s not like there’s room for only one rival. The Jets, Phins and Pats are a three headed hate monster in my eyes. I don’t get any less pumped and heated for Jets/Pats than I do Jets/Phins.
The way I see it, Phins/Jets both hate each other rabidly. And both teams hate the Pats equally for their recent successes. But is it more realistic that Pats hate the Phins more than they hate the Jets? I can’t see that ever being the case.
When Dolphins-Pats Rivalry gets it’s own wikipedia page (like Jets-Pats, Jets-Phins) than maybe I’ll think otherwise.
-
I think the rivalries depend on when you grew up watching. If you were a big fan in the Marino era it is always going to be the Dolphins. If you grew up post Marino its probably the Patriots. Seeing how crazy we all get (and the players as well) when the Jets do pull off the occasional win against NE Id say that the Pats are clearly the team we get the most pumped up to play.
-
One thing we can all agree is that the Pats & Fish despise the Jets & the feeling is mutual. But I don’t think the Pats-Fish have the same mutual hatred for each other. The whole Parcells-BB-Mangini-TUNA BOWL, SPYGATE affairs just makes the Pats more interesting.
-
@jason, i’d have to agree w/ that statement…..i think i’ve always hated them equally….may jus hate the patriots a lil more recently, because they’ve had more success than us…which makes us hate them more now….cause at least i have a lil respect for the dolphins cause i’ll always love big Tuna and like rickey williams….but i will ALWAYS despise Brady and Belichek….
cause in the 90′s you can also make a case that the colts were a rival as well when they were in our division….i remember going to games when i was lil, and eric dickerson was running allllllllllllll ova the field on us….lol….
-
Overall everyone has valid points but at least we have to give Tom credit even though you might think he may not even mean every single word.
-
but fan wise, i think dolphin-jet fans may have more hate towards each other than a pats-jets fan…..cause for the most part the pats fans are alllll bandwagon jumpers now that they actually have a team…compared to the 80s and 90s…
the jets-phins fans were always rivalries and hated each other….i remember i was at that game in the rain in miami couple yrs ago around(on) christmas, when we beat the dolphins on that screen to leon washington in OT…i almost fought about 30-40ppl leaving my seat, the arena and on the walk to the car…..def even got into a screaming match w/ a 50-60yr old lady and her daughter, and almost beat the ish out of her husband..lolol…AHHH THE GOOD TIMES…LOL..
-
3RD BIGGEST RIVAL HAS TO BE BTW BILLS N COLTS….i think anyway…
-
I don’t even think the Bills or Colts are on a real rivalry radar. The Colts & Manning are so good that I get up for those games. The Bills are a division opponent so I’m up for those as well but I don’t feel the history when we play them. I actually root for the Bills & Colts occasionally if the Jets are not affected.
Nothing compares to Pats & Fish to me.
-
Yeah, and now we have Antonio Cromartie.
Cromartie = at least 7 illegitimate kids?
Brady = 1?We win. J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!
-
There is a pure hatred for the Pats with me. I don’t even understand how any Jets fan could not hate the Pats. Their coach walked out on us and went and won three championships for another team in our division. On top of that he is a pure A-hole. Tom Brady gets penalties made up just for him, he likes other men. I hate the Patriots 20 times more than I hate the Dolphins. We have beaten up on the Dolphins for a while now.
-
Shakespeare -
I would have guessed that you believed the biggest rivalry was between the Capulets and the Montagues -
The Colts should be on the Rival Radar considering we essentially formatted the entire offseason based on the AFC Championship game we had against them.
They will win about 14 games a year as long as Payton is there and we wont be heading to a Super Bowl unless we can prove that we can hang with they offense. Number one defense and running game wont be enough. We need to score points like the big boys.
-
one of the main reasons i hated the dolphins more than the pats was because jason taylor was a fin but now hes on our team so i guess hate the pats more now
-
J-E-T-S rex rex rex !!

our third rival should be the vikings cause I can’t stand Brett and you’ll see it on Monday Night (duhda duhda duhda dudha duhda duhda)

I was going for the monday night music

It will always be about the Fish. NEP were a short-term distracton. Down with flipper.

When can Buffalo get better so I can hate them?
The only time I hated the colts was when they were still in the old AFC East and Marshall Faulk used to rip our D up twice a year. Good thing that didn’t last too long. Seriously though, the hatred fueling the rivalry b/w the NYJ and the Fins is the same feeling you get for that kid in your neighborhood who you just couldn’t stand. You don’t know why but the little bastard just pissed you off. You fight this kid and win, he comes back to fight you and he wins…It goed back and forth for eternity and that’s they way it’s supposed to be. You’ll never be friends or talk out your issues. All you both want to do is smash the face of the other person. Jets-Phins is like Dogs-Cats…The rivalry with the Pats is really just more of that “story as old as the hills” variety. Guy works hard for a living, trying to make it big. Johnny-on-the-spot shows up and wows everybody by kicking your ass and everyone elses. The NEP are the bullies and the NYJ are taking that crown this year…The NYJ are the backyard bullies of 2010…Sorry probably the longest and rather pointless post I’ve ever written. -

“Our fans think because you are wearing the same jersey, you are the same team. And we’re not”
Thats from their All Universe All time Great immortal QB.
I have as much respect and hatred for Brady as I have any player in the history of football.
But even some of the Jets fans on this site continue to bow to the Pats as if they are invincible.
No one can ever take away the great things they have accomplished in the past, but there is nothing wrong with looking at the Jets and Pats and objectively saying, the Jets can be a better team than the Pats…
Ive been trying to drill this into Hank and his NE has 10 7th rd picks so they will win the SB for the next decade mindset for a year now…if you dont want to take it from me just ask Tom Brady
-
Brady’s motivation to play football is fading. He wants to be a family man & live in tinseltown. The Patriots are about to extend his contract but I think he is just going through the motions now.
-
I am getting a kick out of seeing MT and Woody watching Mosley/Mayweather fight a couple of rows behind Mariah Carey… LMAO
-
Just to clarify, the term “One-sided rivalry” as I used it has nothing to do with results on the field. We are NE’s #1 enemy. Yet, the Dolphins are our #1 enemy, and vice-versa. The Jets-Dolphins is a conventional rivalry.
In fact it is only in the past 10-12 years that NE has even gotten to the #2 most hated spot. Prior to that, I’d argue that both the Colts and the Raiders were a bigger rival than Boston/NE.
-
A Boston Divisional Rival wasn’t hated by a NY sports team until the turn of the century? When they had been playing each other since the AFL days?
-
Before the Pats dominated the AFC East beginning in 2000, the Phins were basically the dominant team of the AFC East, beginning with Shula taking over as HC in 1970 until he left in 1995. I guess nobody here needs a history lesson about how the Jets spanked Shula’s Colts in Super Bowl III. So, when you evaluate rivals, you have to look at who the dominant team’s no. 1 rival is and for the Phins, it’s the Jets. The rest of the AFC East teams all hated Miami, but because of the Boston-NY sports rivalry, the Pats get up a little more for the Jets than they do for the Phins. So, I still think the Phins are the no. 1 rival, but if Miami continues to play 3rd man to the Jets-Pats rivalry, I could see the Pats overtaking the Phins. It’s pretty obvious that BB is sort of like Shula in that he hates the Jets and he wants to beat the Jets more than any other team. During the BB era, the Pats have been upset down in Miami a few times, but until last season, the BB + Brady combo hadn’t lost at the Meadowlands…that’s a pretty good indication that the Pats get up for playing the Jets, but can’t muster the same intensity down in Miami. And, since Shula retired, I do think the Phins-Jets rivalry lost a bit of intensity, but I still can’t stand losing to the Phins…twice last year was a complete joke.

yea u better not say nothing stupid with ur dazzie dukes coach
