Jets and Giants Bid For Super Bowl

by Steiny on May 11th, 2010 at 3:20 pm

The New York Post is reporting that the Jets and Giants will make a presentation of their bid for the 2014 Super Bowl tomorrow.

The ceremony will include team ownership, Giants quarterback Eli Manning and Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez.

The site of Super Bowl XLVIII will be announced May 25 at the NFL spring meeting in Dallas. Official bids were due to the league early last month.

The New Meadowlands Stadium is competing with Miami and Tampa, Fla., for the game. The New York area is considered the favorite after Arizona dropped out of the bidding.

A New York-area Super Bowl would be the first outdoor, cold-weather game in its history.

What do you guys think?  Should the Super Bowl be played in NY?

Hell yes, because we’ll be playing in it!

  2. avatar greene says:

    as a NYer, yes.

as a general football fan, no.

why? cause it gets f’in cold out there.

more comfortable the players are, the better experience the game will be, imho.

OGOchoCinco: Jamarcus Russel, you on twitter, if not its cool ill see you in #minicamp , ooopsss, did I just leak that info #ocnn

  4. avatar PA Matt says:

    NO

And they don’t deserve it. Who doesn’t put a retractable dome on their stadium these days.

  5. avatar TB says:

I would rather be in MIami watching the Jets win the Super Bowl!!!!!

  6. avatar madbacker12 says:

    pa matt

it would have cost even more money and we already would have to pay for psl’s that are expensive

  7. avatar Brendan says:

    PA Matt,

Cold weather cities. Do you want the Packers to throw a dome on Lambeau? The Meadowlands Winds actually deserves capitalization because they’re their own entity. You want to take a big advantage the Jets/Giants have over warm weather teams in December (like the Phins) and just throw it away so people can be all warm and cozy? This is football. They play in any kind of weather, and so the fans have to deal with it also. I’m sorry, but it’s not “modern” to have a roof, it’s just a cop-out for teams from cold weather towns.

  8. avatar Brendan says:

Give me a 6 degree wind chill with some snow and a Jets Superbowl? I would be the happiest man on Earth. That’s football, ladies.

  9. avatar Jetfan in Miami says:

    TB,

The Jets winning the Superbowl in Miami would be..pure art! I would probably be shot and killed because of how i would react. lol

  10. avatar AKA Jack says:

Absolutely. Most Super Bowls are as boring as, well, a friggin domed stadium.

One of the most memorable games in the history of the NFL was the 1967 NFL Championship game between the Packers and the Cowboys at Lambeau. It was like 50 below zero with the wind chill. That game, also known as The Ice Bowl, was great largely because of the conditions not in spite of them.

Football is meant to be played in the elements. The more people try to screw around with the game to make it better for advertisers the more they make the game dull.

  11. avatar rich kotite says:

NY/NJ will NEVER get the Super Bowl …. it’s a game that the corporations own now and it’s a money making event …. it’s way too cold in February for a 6:18PM game at night ….. Miami or Tampa will get it …. half the stadium would be corporate suits and women who will want to go inside and be warm …. what a joke …

  12. avatar Brendan says:

    rich,

Glad you’re the one making the decision for us. Oh, wait….

Not to get into a grand debate, but there are legitimate measures that would be taken to keep people warm. And people will have to deal with the cold. It’s a football game first and foremost, not a movie premier.

  13. avatar VIGUY007 says:

No, it would be crazy here. Crime, Traffic, Drugs. Let Miami have those problems, and then have their fans die when the JETS win the SB.

  14. avatar Brendan says:

    Um.

Crime? Traffic? Drugs? Are you even from NY/NJ? That’s not the Superbowl, that’s a friggin’ Wednesday.

  15. avatar cmonleon says:

it is dumb but I would think about going If it was here

  16. avatar Harris52ChampionshipDefense says:

Cold weather, possibly snow, I love it. It would mean real football fans at the game, not the corporate crowd they have now.

  17. avatar greene says:

ok, i’m not really for a superbowl in NY either, but crime and drugs? really? superbowl may bring in the alcoholics, but crime (barring the occassional drunken idiot) and drugs?

  18. avatar Andy says:

Absolutely you have it here! I mean it that is what football is all about! Cold! ELements! WInds Gotta Love it. It just adds alot more to the game. And besides most of the corporate non fans would be in the clubs and the indoor rooms.

  19. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

No roof, no game. It is that simple. Sponsors play a huge role and the nfl cannot afford to have game snowed out. The additional monies the JETS and jints will make in new stadium for two years would have paid for roof. But woody was too cheap! Too cheap, no game! Sorry JETS fans!

  20. avatar PA Matt says:

What advantage do we have in cold weather? Our franchise QB is a Mexican from Southern California!

All jokes aside, as a former season ticket holder, it SUCKED sitting in the cold in January. Watching the Colts fans wearing TShirts ws infuriating.

Also, the new stadium looks like ass in my opinion, and shouldn’t have been built to begin with. What a waste of money.

PSLs are a disgrace and since the Jets won’t benefit from the Super Bowl being here, why do I care?

But I do agree that keeping the game out of the cold purposefully is a joke. I have no problem with that part of it. I just, as a fan, would rather have a dome and not freeze my nuts off voluntarily.

  21. avatar Brendan says:

…..snowed out? When has a game ever been snowed out?

    Matt,

You want to wear a t-shirt to the game? It’s FOOTBALL. This isn’t a wimpy summer sport. It’s designed to be played in the harshest time of the year in the worst conditions. It’s not a country club sport that you play when it’s sunny outside. There have been games played in monsoons, hurricanes, wind storms, fog so thick you could barely see the person across the line of scrimmage, snowstorms.

Glad to see you’re a former ticket holder. I love the cold. Brings out the insanity in everyone. You’d prefer Miami playing December football in the Meadowlands under the nice confines of a dome? Count me out of that.

    Long live the Big Slinky.

  22. avatar Mark says:

I agree with the posters who said as a NY fan, yes, as a football fan, no. Too darn cold.

Having written that, they will probably award the game and it will be in the 50s and sunny….

  23. avatar originalJetFan says:

Answered my own question, Superbowl has never been played on the Home Field of one of the participants. Could this be a jinx?

  24. avatar jcjets says:

Its not something that should be done often, but for NY, and the new stadium..sure why not! It will be a big deal because it will be the first time in forever its been in a cold weather city.

I’m glad there’s no dome on the staduim..but I’m not a season ticket holder.

  25. avatar Brendan says:

    originaljetfan,

Not necessarily, the bid is for the 2014 Superbowl. At least it wouldn’t be a jinx this year.

  26. avatar bono-zoffa says:

Since as a jets PSL holder that would mean I’d have some rights to the ticket, then….ah, no I wouldn’t. So never mind.

    Couldn’t…care…less.

  27. avatar OMG27 says:

    Why Not?!
None of us peeons are gonna be lucky enough to land a ticket, so why do we care how comfortable the fans are? At least this would give us locals a chance to see some of the festivities that go on around Championship week.

  28. avatar Nostra-Freakin-Damus says:

As someone who will only ever witness the Super Bowl from the comfort of my couch or favorite tavern, I say ABSOLUTELY!!

And let’s seed the clouds before the game!

I have not seen a snowy Super Bowl in my lifetime. Two teams going at it in the elements is where this sport is at! There’s a reason the season runs when it does. A great NFL team is great in all kinds of weather, what better way to determine the best team than by letting mother nature slap them around a bit!

  29. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

    F-YEAH!!!

  30. avatar Neville says:

I’d rather not have more tourists in MY city… that is what the summer is for.

  31. avatar Marvel says:

100% agree with Brendan & all in favor .. All the People crying for a dome go watch arena football ..

  32. avatar Dan in OK says:

Brendan, you’re right on the money! Football is meant for cold weather. The only Jets game i’ve been able to go to was the Thanksgiving game vs Dallas. Well it was freezing cold and was even snowing. I remember my wife turned and said to me “this sucks, its too cold”. I turned to her and said “this is how football was meant to be played”. To this day she still mentions that that was the weirdest look i’ve ever given her.

I just don’t get how someone can say as a football fan, no.

  33. avatar Mark Sanchez says:

The NY/NJ area is one of the biggest markets in the country, if you think the NFL is going to pass on that opportunity because of some cold, you are mistaken. Why would sponsors stay away from a cold weather SB? That doesn’t make any kind of sense. Most of the sponsors are TV sponsors, and won’t be effected by the weather one bit. I went to the Bengals game last year, and I was frozen solid, but it was also one of the best games I have ever been at.

  34. avatar James in TN says:

If they had built a good stadium with retractable roof then yes, but since Woody went on the cheap going in half with the giants we don’t deserve a super bowl at the new stadium. We don’t have a stadium to call our own. That should be the beef everyone should have.

  35. avatar Brendan says:

Cheap? The Big Slinky cost 1.6 BILLION dollars……how is that cheap?

I just can’t understand people who say sponsors would shy away. Are you kidding me? A historic Superbowl in the biggest media market on Earth with millions of people within driving distance? Yeah..sponsors will be running for the hills!

  36. avatar Mark Sanchez says:

if 1.6 Billion is so cheap for you, than maybe you should have thrown in some of the chump change needed to put a roof on.

  37. avatar Merc20 says:

    @ The Ed…

How is it only Woody that’s cheap. They SPLIT the cost oft he stadium. At least lump Mara and Tisch in when you complain about not having a roof.

I’d love to see the SB here. Weather be damned. It’s football not ball room dancing. eff the corporate fools that have to freeze. I’ll be nice and warm watching my team win the SB in it’s own stadium. With no ROOF WOOT!

  38. avatar dakar says:

    brendan

i agree…i think this would be an excellant opportunity not only for the sponsors to fight it out but also for the NFL to make the most money it ever has in 1 outing… meaning, with all the hype a SB brings this can be the easiest money making idea the NFL has ever had… what is there to think about…do it…besides football is a cold weather sport…and i would love to go to a SB if we ever had 1 here…and im broke…but i would definitly start saving up just to go to the SB…you never know…it might be the jets hosting it in 2014…i wish… anyway, these are my thoughts…

  39. avatar Marvel says:

I really don’t understand peoples beef with sharing a stadium .. Francesa & others can say whatever they want it makes no difference to me .. I just want to win ..

  40. avatar Ricker says:

    Yes.
    Of course.
Football is played outside in the winter.

If you can have every other game of the season, including the AFC and NFC Championship games possibly played outside then why not the Super Bowl?

  41. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

Outside in the cold at normally played at 1 PM. But the NFL for TV money said screw the paying fans in the seats and starts games as late as 9 PM. 6 PM in February could bring snow. If if the JETS and Giants somehow hoodwink the NFL into awarding them the game, I hope it snows. Would they postpone the game?

  42. avatar Mark Sanchez says:

When has snow, or rain ever postponed a football game? Do you watch football?

  43. avatar phil says:

I love the idea of a cold weather SB in our backyard.

  44. avatar jetfaninla says:

    Yes. Instant classic.

  45. avatar rollercoaster says:

With the way weather is now, who knows how it’ll be when in 2014. The last two years, the weather in Jersey wasn’t bad, just cold.

  46. avatar jon in bk says:

A point that doesn’t get brought up often often is the unfair advantage the current de facto policy creates. Warm weather/dome teams are built to play in that environment, no reason they should always get the chance in the superbowl.

Re: Jets/Giants stadium, what will happen if (when) Jets win the first superbowl in the building? Will help put to rest some of the previous perception, I think.

  47. avatar gang Green says:

hey guys on a side note does anyone know if and/or when the training camp schedule will be released…i feel like i knew this time last year what the dates were yet I cant find anything for this summer so far…any help is appreciated

  48. avatar Rich K says:

Would love to have the game here-BUT, TOTALLY ridiculous that with all the money spent by BOTH franchises they didn’t put a retractable roof on the place.

Not only would there be a better chance of getting MULTIPLE Super Bowls, The NCAA Final 4 would have been a frequent visitor!

  49. avatar jameson says:

I hope the stadium gets the SB; my thoughts:

    1) By the time it is 2014, so much global warming will have taken place (ask Gore about it), that the NY area will be in the cool 70′s. Which is lovely weather for a SB.

    2) Given the Commish’s penchant for fixing games, he could actually provide the NFL with a Mark Sanchez/Eli Manning face-off in a JETS/giants SB…

2b) The league coud market the crap out of it, and have the two up-and-coming faces on opposing teams, whom share a stadium, battle it out for the “rights” of New York.

    “King of the Hill”

Too much to NOT allow it.

  50. avatar jameson says:

*Too much (money at stake) to NOT allow it.

  51. avatar James in TN says:

Don’t get me wrong it would be great to have a superbowl there, but it will never happen because we don’t have a roof. Where did the “1.6 BILLION” go? Are the toilet seats in the restrooms heated?

  52. avatar Brendan says:

It’s actually closer to $1.7 billion, disregard my previous post. Both teams put up $850 million.

    Ed,

Haha seriously? The whole point of having the historic cold weather Superbowl is because there is the very real possibility of bad weather, including snow. No, I don’t see them postponing for snow.

  53. avatar Mark Sanchez says:

They didn’t want to put a roof on, because that would take away the teams home field advantage. The Jets and Giants are cold weather teams, that have to deal with swirling winds. The cold is 1 thing, but the wind is an added kicker. Why would they give that opportunity away?
