Braylon Edwards Mother’s Day Gift, FTW!!!

by Bassett on May 12th, 2010 at 12:00 pm

While we made mention of this the other day in our links post, Ferraro41 sent us this link about Braylon’s charitable work and asked “with all the talk of so-called ‘character issues’ this offseason, why doesn’t this sort of stuff make it to the sports pages in NY?”

New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards is honoring his mother Malesa Plater’s commitment to education this Mother’s Day by awarding 11 students from the Cleveland Municipal School District $10,000 to go towards their college education.  "I wanted to really do this with my mom because she always stressed to me how important education was growing up," he said.

The students are part of Advance 100, a program dedicated to addressing the educational needs of under-served youth in Cleveland. Edwards first pledged $1 million to fund college scholarships for 100 students in the  program in 2007. Every student in the program must maintain a 2.5 grade point average throughout high school, do 15 hours of community service every year and cannot have unexcused absences until they graduate. If they follow through Edwards will help pay for their college education.

It’s a good question Ron, and we know your question is rhetorical … but as we all know, genuinely heartfelt charitable disbursements of large quantities of cash don’t seem to move newspapers.

Getting beyond the base level of media criticism as I am feeling somewhat self-critical today, if controversy moves more newspapers, then we can’t hold the papers totally responsible if they are just giving their consumers what they want.

Amazing (not really, but you get the idea) that I did not read this anywhere else before reading it here. Great job by Braylon.

  6. avatar C-MART28 says:

Everyone thought that Braylon was some kind of thug when we traded for him because he punched LeBron’s friend or whatever, but besides that Braylon has no trackrecord of getting into trouble.

  7. avatar WW85 says:

Yeah, Braylon deserves credit & mea culpas from me as well.. He did have a bad rap. Clowney as well deserves lots of credit for off field performance…

“Yes, we know that he’s cured AIDS, that he figured out how to untangle DNA, and he settled the entire Palestinian-Israeli conflict… But, REALLY, tell our readers… isn’t Edwards just a CANCER in the Jets locker room? Isn’t he BAD for Mark Sanchez’ development? Doesn’t he just make your teeth rot out?”

    I disagree. Completely!

If newspapers (and other media) fail to give consumers what they want, they will go out of business. But if they give them all the controversy that is fit to print (or not) AND also showcase the better side of human beings, not only are they evidencing basic journalistic integrity, perhaps they will ensure an informed readership does not act stupidly or against its own interests.

IOW, I think your argument is a red herring. Giving the public what it wants does not prevent one from also giving them what they need. And, in a free society, ignorance is very dangerous.

well thought out, as always Harlan.

It’s a shame that this doesn’t get the notoriety it deserves. You’d think instead of regurgitating the same tired angles over and over, trying to stir the pot and cause a divide that these “reporters” in the NY media would jump at the chance to use this to shed a “hey, these guys aren’t as bad as you think” angle. Nope. Why am I not surprised.

    Harlan,

was that a lecture from your current events class or something? that was really good

  13. avatar GP says:

Atta boy, Braylon. In my opinion, an opportunity for an education is the best gift a guy can give.

  14. After last night’s performance, LeBron himself deserves a punch in the face!

  15. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Terrible guy that Braylon Edwards is right???

If this kid starts catching the easy passes and Sanchez continues to develop his game….he is going to own this town

He’s a few more consistent catches away from breaking out like 07 and taking this town by storm

  16. avatar JesusRevis says:

Good for you Braylon, maybe this will get some of the haters to shut up about your character “issues”

  17. avatar Joe B. says:

    Way to go Braylon.

  18. avatar greene says:

nice of braylon, but 2.5 a tad low for a scholarship, no?

i understand its for the underpriviledged, but they should make it, 2.5 overall gpa but also 3.0 for senior the year. gives these kids motivation to keep on improving.

  19. avatar James in TN says:

Great work Braylon, this is what I would do if I ever win the lottery.

  20. avatar JG in Mass says:

u wont see this story in the news anytime soon!
    good for you braylon!

  21. avatar rusty sanchez says:

if the only thing that braylon did bad was give lebrons cousin a fresh one then im sure hes not that bad of a person…im sure when your cousin is lebron and is king of cleveland im sure you got a chip on your shoulder and probably rubbed braylon the wrong way
