Dennis Dillon from The Sporting News writes that the Jets first rounder could have a quick impact for the team.
Kyle Wilson, CB, Jets (first round). The Jets are building quite a cornerback corps. In the offseason, they have acquired Antonio Cromartie and drafted Wilson out of Boise State to complement shutdown corner Darrelle Revis.
Wilson is projected to be the Jets’ nickel back and cover slot receivers. He also may get a chance to return punts. He looked so good at minicamp that defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman reportedly advised the team’s offensive coaches to not challenge Wilson.
I can’t wait to see him on the field to get a true sense of what he’s about. He very well could take over punt duties, as he had an excellent average (10.42 punt return avg., 26th in NCAA Div. I in 2009) on returns. We’ll see what other teams do when it comes to throwing at or away from Wilson, but it’s clear that he’ll immediately jump into that role and the depth that he provides the unit is excellent.

yea I dont get what that means telling them not to challenge him.

I think he’s giving the offense a warning not to mess with Wilson.
I am really looking forward to see what this kid can do, not to mention the entire secondary as a whole. I would expect Wilson to be returing punts. I’d much rather give him a shot, rather than going with Leonhard and/or Cotch.

THANK YOU, AL!!!!!!!!!
GOD, I HATE CRUDDY REPORTING AT MAJOR SPORTS NEWS OUTLETS!
OK, I’m better now…
Who the hell is this kid, Dennis Dillon? And how the hell did he get his job? My lawd! What a hack!
For anyone who was around many eons ago (a week, maybe?) when this surfaced, they’d know that this came from a Rex presser during mini-camp, when he was asked about Wilson. I’m paraphrasing now (you can look up the actual presser if you wish for the exact wording), but it was as Al described it above.
Rex started talking about how everyone knows that Thurman is a notorious trash yakker during practices, and how everyone makes fun of telling offenses not to throw at Revis. Well, Thurman was having fun with the offensive coaches after Wilson did not stink up the joint and made a couple of plays, teasing them (and Wilson to an extent, too, after all the ‘shutdown’ press he’d gotten) to not even THINK about throwing Wilson’s way. It seems it allowed all concerned to have a good laugh in the middle of a workday.
It was a joke, and was so reported in the 4 or 5 reports I saw of it at the time.
Then comes along our happy warrior, little Denny Dillon, filling up space for the once-prestigious The Sporting News. All Denny seemed capable of was reading a bunch of other guys’ stories quickly to find something to get his assigned space filled up. In this pursuit, he misreads what the real reporters had written previously and loses the tease angle and inserts his own, dire “advised” veiled threat supposedly coming from Thurman and the Jets.
This, in turn, will be picked up by others, who did not see or hear the presser and can’t be bothered to get it right, as well. As with everything else, it will then go into the concrete, general consciousness. Then, every story will begin to mention how the Jets have warned the NFL not to throw Wilson’s way, as being yet another sign of hubris that must be beaten down. Plus, it’d unfairly put Wilson’s every move under the media microscope to be analyzed for potential FAILURE by media blowhards.

Plus, the Thurman misquote aside, is there ANYTHING pithy in this press bite that has not been stated thousands of times whenever either the Jets’ secondary or its 1st Round pick was a topic?
There’s not a syllable in there that is not a rehash.
Just how moribund is The Sporting News?

haha So Kyle Wilson is good. I’d hope so since he’s a first rounder. Thanks for clocking in, Mr. Dillon.

Dennis Thurman was talking trash and having fun on the field, not advising…..lol
It’s funny how the whole meaning of something gets changed.
