Nick Mangold spoke to Manish Mehta about his contract situation. While it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a wedge between him and the Jets this season, he’s looking ahead and is expecting a new deal.
Mangold admitted that he’d like to resolve his contractual situation fairly soon.
“I’d love to get something done before the season,” said Mangold, who is entering the final year of his five-year deal. “It’s a security thing.”
Mangold appears to be at the top of the list for a team loaded with young stars looking for new deals. Linebacker David Harris (entering the fourth year of a four-year deal), D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Darrelle Revis will also be looking for extensions this offseason.
The uncertain labor landscape, however, could throw those players for a loop.
“It’s bad timing,” Mangold said of the collective bargaining agreement dispute. “I assume that there is potential of them getting a CBA hashed out. If there isn’t, we’re all in a bad spot. That’s the worst case.”
The Jets’ braintrust has been relatively guarded with how they’ll proceed with the boatload of unsettled contracts this offseason.
“He’s one of our guys,” owner Woody Johnson told The Star-Ledger about Mangold. “The timing of all those (potential contract extensions) is difficult. We’re living with very tenuous rules in terms of who we can pay and how much we can do at this point. Within those rules, we’re trying to do the best job we can.”
Mangold, who will be participating in the team’s Organized Team Activities starting next week, admitted that he’ll be calling his agent later this week to talk shop.
“I’m not a bad guy,” Mangold said. “I don’t believe that I am. I like to believe that I do keep a good guy persona. That’s how I was raised and how I do things. But in the end, it’s still a business. You see that when people get released or brought in. … So I can’t be foolish when the time comes for whatever needs to be done business-wise. … It’s something that I think gets a lot of times overlooked when people are made out to be bad guys for whatever reason. For as much as we hear it’s a business on other side, it’s still a business on our side.”
Translation: Mangold won’t be a pushover in these negotiations.
And Mangold has every reason not to be a pushover. He’s been one of the best, if not THE best center in the league for a few years. If the team starts leaking false stories about him, it’s clear that Mangold won’t react the same way as Leon (saying nothing), just based on his “good guy” comments … he’s already making it clear who he is and what he’s about.
GMs in the NFL have a tough balance between keeping teams intact and salary caps governed effectively. Without the particulars on the new cap, plunging headlong into huge contracts for the Jets will be a big problem … as it might hamstring them in years to come if new twists are added.
Let’s hope that the Jets have a smart enough salary cap team to make this work once the new CBA gets worked out at the latest, and maybe ahead of time even.

Does anyone else have a bad feeling about how this will play out.
He’s the best around and I want him here but it seems like there are too many guys with their hands out.
-
Mangold is hurt by the current labor contracts and my guess is that its 50/50 that he is signed by the start of the season. Jets are meeting with Revis’ folks now about an extension. He made alot more money last season than Mangold so it should be much easier to extend him in the current framework of the CBA.
-
it seems to me that it’s going to be hard for the team to deal with this (all these potential contracts) until there is a new CBA. Either or both side could feel screwed if they agree to something now and the new agreement is much different than expected.
-
According to Manish Mehta, Revis and Harris are also looking for new contracts. This could get ugly…

Get them inked in the uncapped year and front load the deals. This way we have more freedom next year to sign who we need to as well. I am sure Mike T will have away to get this done. You don’t make all these moves to build up a team and then right before the goal line let the house get taken down. Sign Revis, Mangold, Harris and DBrick asap please.

I agree with TB and make the extensions no more than three years so they don’t get womped by any new CBA deals.
Of course the problem in getting a new CBA is that the more teams that accumulate contracts that would be a problem under a new agreement, the harder negotiations become, not just between the owners and the players, but among the owners themselves.
-
It’s really sad that the CBA is hanging over the negotiations here. If the CBA was in place for the forseeable future he’d probably already have a contract. I’m sure Mangold understands that. At the same time, don’t blame him one bit for wanting his financial security, especially after how great he’s been for the Jets.

Idk but the longer this offseason goes the more negative feelings I’m getting lol. Maybe it’s just cuz the Jets have burned us so many times before. If all these new additions don’t work out, then the true home grown talent that we have all need contracts in the same offseason…
I’m psyched about this season but I’m being pretty cautious about it. You know, unless a Miami fan gets in my face.

Dylan- Revis also said the Jets guaranteed him a new deal before the start of the season and he implied he might hold out if he didn’t get one. And his agent was also the agent for Kendall and Baker. So yeah, it could get very ugly

MEL31602,
Yeah, lets just hope that the FO decides to give them new contracts. We can’t afford for those guys not to be 100% focused on football at the start of the season.
-
Well, we all knew this was coming with these guys and it would be a mess. Pray for the best, but be be prepared for the worse.
Tannenbaum is no pushover and he has proven that if you mess with him during a contract negotiation, your ass is gone.

Will
Yea but the guys that were wanting contracts, werent at the same level of talent as Revis,Harris or Mangold. There is NO WAY Mike T lets these guys hold out or letting these guys go.Revis will be the first extension done and Harris and Mangold should follow up shortly. Mangold and Harris just has to understand that they all cant start Jumping and wanting new contracts just because revis is getting one.Contracts take some time to look over and MR T cant be pressured into re-signing everyone who wants a contract with the idea of those players holding out.
I can see this being a story if revis gets his extension and Mangold dont get one right away and threatening to holdout. In the end though these guys will all be ready for the season and at season end, these guys will have a new contract.

It all comes down to the CBA discussions…Mangold’s and the rest of the Jets’ UFA’s contracts will be determined by the discussions.

I’m gonna rely on Bent’s analysis the same way I rely on Rex to run on-the-field operations.
That said, Tanny’s contract negotiation chickens appear to be heading home to roost…

So, yes, the players HAVE been watching carefully as Tanny dealt harshly with a slew of players as their contracts came up for review.
Do Rex & Tanny still think that Friday night dinnertime phone call to Faneca was a good idea?
Mangold doesn’t.
How much is it gonna cost Tanny around the locker room to make up for in cash what he easily could have offered in respect?
Just a boneheaded GM play.

mike t,
He also said:
“I’m very confident,” Mangold said of getting a deal done. “I’ve done everything that I could from when I was drafted to where I am now, and done it the right way and done everything I can. So, I expect the Jets are going to do the same. It’s something that I’m not worried about and it’s not keeping me up at night because — maybe I’m foolish — but I assume something’s going to get done.”
To my knowledge, the only Jets-drafted player that Tanny has gotten tough with was Leon (and, IMO, for good reason). Tanny is harder on over 30 vets for a reason, they can be replaced at far lower cost and would have to be replaced in the near future anyhow. Kerry got what turned out to be too lavish a deal. Your whole theory about Tanny and his alleged hardball negotiation tactics causing player turmoil is bunk. All the players are pissed about the CBA and possible lockout. But, if the Jets players want to grouse, they should talk to their colleagues at Pittsburgh or Jacksonville. Mangold has every reason to sleep like a baby, Tanny is a cap genius and letting your young, All-Pro center go is NFL suicide. I know you don’t like Tanny, but Mangold and Brick are just too good and too young to replace that easily. Tanny knows that and the same can be said about Revis and Harris. Bent has already demonstrated that deals can be done under the cap to keep the Jets core. But, I’ll toss this out. Mangold is a great player, but center is likely the no. 3 most valuable position behind LT and LG. I have no problem making Mangold the NFL’s highest paid center, but not it’s highest paid OL. Let’s hope his agent doesn’t come from the Alvin Keels school of over-selling.
-
I hope we resign Mangold , Revis, Brick and Harris. BUT, they will have to be careful because with Tanny a contract is not worth the paper it is written on. Just ask TJ and Faneca.
-
this kills me right when the team is ready to make a run the greedy fkg players have to get there million dollars sports is starting to get old.maybe the fans need to hold out
-
tyrone,
You’re sounding like an unpaid intern in Tanny’s office.
That fan-holdout cat is waaaaay too far out of the bag. I cannot imagine paying the exorbitant prices for 8 games a year that many on this board pay. God put the NFL on TV in the early ’60s because Pete Roselle wanted it there. And on my couch I will remain.
To each his own.
But while that may be the case, a large number of seats ARE going unfilled because Woody is simply charging too damned much for them, even for these fans who are used to shelling out large sums to see the game in person.
“Obviously,” it’s the fault of the “greedy fkg players”
Nice…

Sack,
Good post, but you miss my point, I’m afraid.
One, I don’t hate Tanny. I’ve said numerous times that, yes,he is a cap genius, and he does extraordinary work on finding and obtaining players for this roster. No beef there.
Again, it’s how he handles the negotiations with his current roster players — no matter how they were obtained. He’s shat on the drafted, the free agent and the traded for, equally.
If he kept everything completely in-house — so that none of us knew what was going on until they announced it — I’d be happy as a clam.
And I respectfully disagree with you thoroughly on the extent to which Tanny’s tactics in negotiations causes player turmoil. No it is not bunk. Go back and re-read the Mangold quote you supplied. Nick is saying clearly, “it’s a business, we all know it; and I did my part, so YOU have to step up and do your part, now.”
That’s a very clear challenge to Tanny.
Again, my point was not to state that Tanny wouldn’t get done what he’s got to get done to build this roster.
But rather, I said all of his future negotiations are about to go much less smoothly than they would have had he offered a tiny bit more respect to all of the popular former players. Tanny’s bought himself 40 yards of bad road here…He’ll get it all done, but I wouldn’t bet on his getting a lot of sleep during it all.

James,
Cutting two veterans that you had for two/three seasons is completely different than how you treat life-long players who were drafted by the regime.
And TJ/Faneca were diminished goods. Mangold, Brick, Revis, and Harris are all entering their prime. Not similar any way you look at it.
-
Drop the cap. Make the NFL conform to the free market system like the rest of the real world. Mangold is worth as much as he can get, and the Jets need to give it to him. Maybe he could then afford a few PSLs for the family.

gotta get him back for a life time contract 200 mill? GARRENTEED FOR LIFE ?
