Jenkins Admits His Weight is at 390

by Bassett on May 14th, 2010 at 9:30 am

Thursday was an open session for the press with the players in the building and Jenkins was honest with Rich Cimini of ESPN about his current weight and his goals.

NT Kris Jenkins came clean Thursday, admitting that he’s a wee bit over his listed weight. The roster has him at 360 pounds, but Jenkins revealed that he’s 390. This might be hard to believe, but he doesn’t look out of shape. Nevertheless, he’s a contestant in The Great Weight-Loss Contest, facing teammate Damien Woody and coach Rex Ryan.

Jenkins’ goal for training camp: 345 pounds. And he likes his chances of making the weight.

The Jets start OTA practices Monday, but Jenkins, coming off major knee surgery, won’t participate in team drills. As a precaution, he will be limited to conditioning, maybe a little work in individual drills. The Jets want to take it easy with Jenkins, making sure he lasts for the long haul. Come training camp, he’ll also work on a limited basis.

It’s a concern, to be sure, but maybe less of one now that we’ve seen what Rex is capable on a line without the big guy.  There’s no reason to lose Jenkins to a season-ending injury during the summer, so limiting his reps while he does other conditioning is a good plan.

As far as his weight, it’s a long way to go in a short time, but thanks to the contest, we should know how he’s doing when he checks in.  So we fans should have a good sense of where he’ll be come the end of July.

He needs to lose a ton of weight. Its not surprising that he gained 30 pounds since he couldn’t work out with his leg injury. He should get down to at least 350 before the season starts. We need Jenks to be healthy all year.

    oh my!

  5. avatar Brendan says:

He is just an immense human being. It’s absurd how big he is.

  6. avatar Pdubbs says:

The guy is wayyyy too big to be running around on a surgically repaired knee. I would get used to the idea of playing without Jenkins and just take whatever he can give us.

  7. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball (new name pending) says:

kris Jenkins is really a grizzlie bear who one day just decided to shave his fur off and play football. what an enormous man!

As a man who has weighed over 300 pounds, I can attest to the fact that it is a lot easier to drop the first several pounds than one might think.

A little aerobic exercise, a reasonable diet, and his goal is not as far fetched as it may appear.

And, should he get there, it will be a major benefit to him and our team.

Not surprising, but not cool either. This guy is walking around on a bad knee and putting a lot more weight on it than he needs to.
I think you’d have to be a bit nieve to think he’s playing more than half a season. Let’s just hope we can get a few good games out of him in what will probably be his last year in the league.

  10. avatar PA Matt says:

OMG… he’s had a similar surgery on his other knee, and played pretty dominant until the other knee went. It’s quite possbile he could have more than one year left in him. Don’t be too pessimistic now.

I love how we are handling this/him. We NEED him for the long haul. He KNOWSW wehat he is doing on the field already! He just needs to get more PHYSICALLY fit. He’ll be just fine.

  12. avatar k.c. says:

p.s. when I say physically fit,I’m not talking strength per se,I’m talking cardio mostly.

    Harlan,

I would agree if 360 is the weight he should be at, But I believe he should play at 340 lbs. Now he has to lose 50 lbs by the end of July. I personally don’t think he’ll do it.

Frankly, as great a player as KJ is, I’m a bit disappointed with him. He hasn’t played a full season for us yet, and the fact that he’s almost 400 lbs tells me that he is not taking his rehab and overall conditioning seriously. Any player will tell you that the older you get the more time to conditioning you have to put in. Even with a bum knee there is still a lot you can do to saty in shape. The extra weight just makes it that much harder to come back because of the extra stress it (the weight) puts on the joints.

That was my reason for wanting to move up and take Dan Williams, Jenkins cannot be relied upon.

My guess is that Big Jenks was hitting the weight room while he couldn’t do cardio. So, like Cimini says, he probably doesn’t look all that bad because he likely bulked up with muscle and fat. He should get 30 lbs off pretty quickly. I’d like to see him play under 350 lbs, but I don’t see him as eating his way out of the NFL. He’s just an enormous human being.

    Ramble,

I agree — Disappointed is the way I feel. Sometimes, pro athletes don’t understand the great opportunity that they have been given. If you only have a few years left to play the game that you love (and that has made you your fortune in life) — you have to do everything possible to maximize those years. I feel that, if Jenks is 390, he has not done his all to be in shape for pro football. I guess, that is why he has not been able to finish a full season, for awhile. As with many pro athletes, including Mickey Mantle, one day he will look back and say “why didn’t I take care of myself”. I would bet the house that he won’t play a full season. And, that is sad because, when he’s on his game, he is one of the toughest d-linemen I have ever seen. Ask Kevin Mawae.

  16. avatar Brendan says:

    Harvlis,

He blew out his knee mid-season last year. That’s usually a year-long injury and he’s going to be playing opening day. Let’s not get too carried away with the “he’s not taking care of himself’ and “is not utilizing his gifts” proclamations. He’s was laid up for months before he could even begin to work out again.

  17. avatar Harvlis says:

    Brendan,

I agree, he is a different breed of human and, he was laid up for awhile. It’s just that common sense tells me that, if you have to rehab a bad knee (or two), you should keep you weight down and make the job easier. A few salads along the way wouldn’t have hurt. Of course, I wish him the best and can’t wait to see him on the field but, he has not made his life any easier, by going up to 390.

  18. avatar miketaliaferro says:

    Brendan,

I’d agree with you here IF the report had said that he’d naturally ballooned up to 425 or somesuch while recuperating, and had put in the work to bring himself back down to 390.

But it doesn’t say that. It alludes to the fact that this man is topping out now at 30 lbs. more than his previous listed playing weight, which was found to be too heavy, and which is 15 lbs. heavier than where the Jets staff has been saying they want him for months now.

Plus, he’s been at the FP facility for months now, doing his rehab and working out.

It’s clear that Rex is not happy with Jenkins. This whole weight-loss contest is designed, IMHO, to address Jenx’s extra tonnage. Period. If so, it’s very savvy on Rex’s part. It struck me at the time that including Damian may be just a PR beard to keep it from looking like a punitive measure from Rex to Kris, which I feel it is. That way, the only recourse for Rex is to fine Kris, berate him in the press, and embarrass him. With someone who’s as much a “big kid” as Kris is, this would probably backfire and screw up the relationships here. So, Rex gets smart: Bring in Woody, include yourself, and it’s all a fun game thing for the media and fans. You all become healthier and you get your NT down to where you needed him.

    Smart.

But, yes, I’m disappointed in Kris. He’s too smart to have let that happen in the first place — especially since this is his 2nd time through this drill.

  19. avatar miketaliaferro says:

    Harlan,

    Thanks for sharing your story!

Can you offer any insight on this? What is the tendency for shedding weight in the 300s as opposed to shedding weight in the 200s?

    Easier? The same? More difficult?

Is going from 260 to 240 the same as going from 360 to 340? Or is it different?

    Thanks!

his joints will be stressed while carrying that weight. with his age he needs to lose. maybe more salads right now.
