On being on the field with Darrelle Revis…
It has been great, to tell you the truth. We sit by each other in the meeting room, so we try to correct each other and just try to work out the best we can to make the secondary the best it can be and make us one of the best tandems ever.
On returning kickoffs…
I like it. I’ve been doing it since high school. To me, I think it just comes natural. We have a great special teams coach. I’m looking forward to it. I’m trying to do whatever I can to help out as much as possible.
On the style of his kick returns…
I ran track in college, so I go back to track form when I get in the open field. I know how to use my speed, slow it down and when to accelerate.
On where he is in terms of learning the system…
The system actually was easy to pick up. I’ve just got to cover my man (laughter). I actually picked it up the first couple of days when I got here and got situated. For me to go through the playbook and look at it now or watching it on field and going through it out there, it’s a whole lot easier. I can actually play full speed now and go out and play football.
On if he’ll have a successful season playing in this defense…
Definitely. You’ve got (Darrelle) Revis on the other side, so with him being on the other side I think they’re going to throw the ball at me because of the past two years. I had a downfall for the past two seasons. I’ve got to pick my game up and help out as much as I can. I’ve got a great coaching staff with Coach Dennis Thurman and I’ve got great teammates back there helping me in Jim Leonhard and (Brodney) Pool. Those guys are communicating well back there and we’re just trying to play football.

I can see the makings of a dynamic duo on the outsides. I love Pettine’s comment about how WRs lined up outside the lines “will be eliminated”. Imagine not having to double team the opposing offenses best TWO receivers…Then Jenks takes up two more guys on the line…The QB is a sitting duck…Best case scenario for our D…
-
Jenkins staying healthy and Taylor being able to penetrate are going to be huge for the Jets.
-
Just imagine if this defense becomes as dominant as the 85 Bears or 2000 Ravens.
-
If we can get to the QB, this will be a real scary D…
-
Johnny Hector-
Please don’t compare the Jets D to the old Bears or Ravens. The Jets are not near that type of dominance yet. We need to just lets things play themselves out and then compare them when everything is said and done.

I not comparing the Jets D to those teams. I’m saying imagine if they become as dominant defense like those teams had.

Jetsfan65:
You’re right on !! The injection of testoteron this off season seems to have clouded the brains of Jet fans. You must forgive them because they know not what they say. Like how about the Bears doubling the Jets in just about all Defensive categories?
For example:
85 Bears had:
258 point diff (456PF-198PA), Jets 117 point diff.
Bears had 60+ Sacks, the Jets 30
Bears had 30 INT’s, the Jets had 17Followed by forced fumbles, tackles for a loss etc., etc. etc.
I would say that it is a little premature to even think about it. Like Muhammed Ali said : ” Boy, if you even DREAM about it, you better wake up and apologize”
-
Hey Hank/Naples
You imply my brain has been clouded. Please read my post carefully. It does NOT say this defense is as good as the 85 Bears or 2000 Ravens. It says imagine IF this defense becomes as dominant as the 85 Bears or 2000 Ravens. Theres a big difference.
You could imagine winning the lottery but thats a lot different than actually winning it.
And for your comment “I would say that it is a little premature to even think about it” Are you as critical of the statements Rex has made since he got here? Think the Jet can win a Superbowl for example.
I’m all for good discussion but please read carefully what it is written before knocking someone’s post.

Unfortunately, I don’t think we have the D-line talent to become a legendary defense. I think teams wll be able to run on us some this season.
-
Hey Johnny:
You forgot to read the part where Ali says “Boy, even if you dream about it, you better wake up and apologize”
-
This Jets defense is scary in a unique way.
By the fourth game we will see it’s calling card, hopefully.
No great defenses are alike.
-
Imagining is great. There is no harm in it. It is what makes it fun being a football fan. Now imagine if we could all respect each other and get along….
-
Johny, I guess “IF” is a thougher concept than you thought!
The 2000 Ravens D record was BS! 2 games against a very bad Bengals team and another 2 games against the Browns. Pittsburg 2x with Kordell Stewart. We rolled up over 500 yards of total offence on them… course we lost, but 500yards!!!
-
Hey Hank,
I did read your Ali quote. I don’t see the need to apologize for saying IF.
Lets take your interpretation of what my post was. I compared the 2010 Jet D with the 85 Bears. You say my brain is clouded . Then you state the 2009 Jets D doesn’t even come close to the 85 Bears. I agree the 2009 D is not the 85 Bears. However I’m talking about the 2010 team. Using your logic the 2010 team can’t be great because the 2009 team wasn’t. Great arguement.

Just for clarification on my earlier post. Imagine if the Jets could have a dominant Defense. As a long time Jet Fan the closest thing I remember was the Sack Exchange years @ Shea. You looked forward to seeing the Defense on the field so they could get after the QB. It seems like a lifetime ago and it would be great if this team defense could become a dominate one. Who would of thought at this time last year the Jets defense would turn into the #1 rank D in its first year under Ryan/Pettine. Dare to dream.
-
Hey Johnny:
I understand your argument completely and see where you can be exited about the potential the Jets Defense AND Offense bring to the field this year. I also understand where exuberance IS the force that bonds us fans to our favorite teams, and the we have more reson than ever to be exuberant about the Jets this year.
But take a look at the stats above as compared to last years Jets and you’ll see what an incredible (impossible) leap the jets must make if we are to even, as you say imagine, them in the same stratosphere as the 85 Bears. Consider this in view that this must be made with the addition a couple of keyplayers, although still productive, are absolutely in their declining years.
So, while It is obvious that the Jets D were dominant in MOST, not all, games last year, and that this year they are even a much improved version, and it’s great to be excited, we must all temper our enthusiasm with a little realism, specially in light the lessons our team’s history has tought us.

The quoted Bears stats are irrelevant. The only stat that matters is points given up. Point differential is affected by how many points our offense scores, which is irrelevant to how good the defense is.
Last year’s Jets, having to mesh a ton of new players to learn a new system, without Jenkins for half the year, only gave up less than 15 points per game. But that number includes points given up by the offense and special teams. Take away Sancez turnovers, and Ted Ginn, and the defense actually only gave up around 11 points per game last year.
Now we upgrade what was alreadya great secondary replacing Lito shepard, Donald Strickland and, yes, Kerry Rhodes, with Cromartie, Wilson and Pool. We add in Jason Taylor, get back Kris Jenkins, and give Devito, Pouha, Pitoitua, Kroul a chance to grow more into the system in year two, I can see us giving up around 8 or 9 points a game this season.
That means if Sanchez, with a vastly improved receiving corps, Keller, and Tomlinson’s ability to catch the ball out of thebackfield, which we missed with Leon out last year, can give us just on Tc and one FG, we’ve got a pretty decent chance for win already.

Saying all the right things. Lets just hope it turns out like it’s planed.
I can’t wait to see these guys terrorizing QB’s…
