    Pay the man!!!!!

  2. avatar BigKatt says:

That was great to hear. I’m glad both sides are determined to just get this out of the way with no mess.

  3. avatar Organized Chaos says:

Am I the only one that feels like the FO put out the 20 million number? They “apparently” did the same thing with a 4.5 million dollar offer last year to Leon.
I don’t know but I feel like DR is smashing those rumors with a sense of humor and a constant attitude of just wanting to get this thing done correctly and easily.
These sides will hammer out a deal – It won’t be 20, but my guess is around 16.
I have a question for you guys though – Out of the guys that need contracts (Revis, Mangold, Harris, Dbrick, Cromartie, Holmes, Edwards) in what order do you think the Jets prioritize these players?

  4. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Organized Chaos—

“Am I the only one that feels like the FO put out the 20 million number?”

Last week, miketaliaferro and I said that the safe bet was on the FO leaking this $20 mil number, and we made the case, at length, on two different threads, if you’re interested:

The Revis Looking for a Big Pay Day thread (from May 16):
    http://www.thejetsblog.com/2010/05/16/link-revis-looking-for-big-payday/

and The Post Is So Close But So Far thread (from May 18):
    http://www.thejetsblog.com/2010/05/18/the-post-is-so-close-but-so-far/

This is one of the points I made on the latter of the two threads:
    _________________________________________

The point of the strategy [of the FO leaking the $20 mil figure] is that you weaken your opponent going into battle [by portraying Revis as a greedy athlete], and you’re more likely to get what you want, you’re more likely to win. Which translates into millions upon millions of dollars in the winner’s pocket.

Now, however, the opponent is fighting back: Revis’s agents are denying that they’re the source of the story. This may aid them in the negotiations, or it may not.

The way in which it might not help Revis is this: DR’s side has now said that the $20 million figure was wildly inflated. So it’s possible that Mike T can now use this as a weapon: to set the bar lower at the start of negotiations.

    I think it’s Revis-mangold-Harris-D’brick-then either Holmes or edwards-cro

  6. avatar Organized Chaos says:

Great points Ben – I knew I wasn’t alone in this thinking.
As for answering my (opinionated) question – I think it looks like this
    1. Revis 2. Mangold 3. Dbrick 4. Harris 5a. Holmes 5b. Braylon 6. Cro
*The tie for 5th will be settled based on a this seasons play*

  7. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Organized Chaos—

    Thanks for the kind words.

As for which deal gets done when, I’d say that Bluntonio, Braylon and Cro won’t get anything done until after the season is over. Which, I think, is what you seem to suggest yourself.

But, yes, Revis is the first to get his deal done. Which then sets the bar for all of the other deals: Mangold, Brick, and Harris.

  8. avatar Bent says:

Ben – Hopefully Braylon will get a deal during the season, because it could produce a future cap saving that makes it easier to sign everyone else (he’s the only one that the 30% rule doesn’t apply to so they can give him an upfront salary in the uncapped year instead of a bonus that is spread over the contract).

The top four are not just a priority, they are a necessity.

  9. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent—

Thanks for the info about the cap saving that would come if Braylon is signed during the season. My guess is that if this happens, it would happen late in the season (as opposed to early). I think the FO wants to make BE sing for his supper this year, ie, perform—and perform at a high level—which would then determine his worth in the contract negotiations.

And, yes, I agree that Revis, Mangold, Brick and Harris are a necessity for this team.

Let’s hope Bluntonio, Braylon and Cro make themselves indispensible during the course of the season as well.

  10. avatar hanknaples says:

    Bent:

I highly doubt that Edwards will get a solid contract offer this year, for two reasons:

    1) He still has NOT proven that he is ” MR. RELIABLE” when it comes to catching game changing TD’s. And

    2) He is happy as punch sitting with a one year contract at about $6 million per year and does NOT want to rock the boat!!!

The real problem is, like I said, the Magnificent Seven that come due at about the same time. You keep insisting that it would not be a problem, however , in order for the CAP to be satisfied the face of the Jets must change in order to do so.

If that happens, we have left ourselves very vulnerable in our VERY CRITICAL trenches.

  11. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Instead of signing free agents, the Jets simply extend the contracts of the “Magnificent Seven”….

I dont know how many different languages or ways Bent has posted this but Hank can’t seem to grasp this through his granite head…its not rocket science, read what the guys posts instead of clinging to your “everything will always fall apart” neurotic mindset

  12. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Its like listening to Glenn Beck as he draws lines connecting Karl Marx to Barack Obama….lot of talking, lot gloom and doom, but there is nothing to it…its baseless speculation from a guy who has been saying every year that the Jets “cant get under the cap” but they always do

  13. avatar Bent says:

Hank – good points and I agree that they might wait. If they do wait, they should still be able to sign everyone, if they choose to, but if they do decide to extend Braylon (perhaps, like Ben says, later in the season if he’s having a good year), then there is an opportunity there to make things even easier for themselves. That’s all I’m saying.

  14. avatar hanknaples says:

    Bent:

My problem I have with all this is that I agree with Ben Nevis in that the Jets will. as he says, “make Braylon sing for his supper” this year while his opportunity to do so got quite smaller when they signed Bluntonio….But, we shall see.

Any way, Revis’s contract is interesting enough by itself and his lead will set everything else in motion.

Regardles of how they all fall, I expect some major changes within the next two years!!

  15. avatar Reprocity says:

I think it’s fair to say with the age of our “Core” members, the lockout hurts the JETS more than anyone in this league…

  16. avatar Reprocity says:

Anyone feeling nestaligic saying “If we only had one more Mo Lewis, and one more Klecko!” ???

  17. avatar TJBfan says:

Here’s why Revis is amazing and sets the standard as to what a team leader is:

    - Reaching out to Cro to get him adjusted, sitting next to him at meetings to discuss things together
    - Mentoring Wilson from the get go, and talking about how he helped Cro with the Scheme but wants to help Wilson with Scheme and college -> NFL transition
    - Knocking over holmes in practice when he tried to block him(showing the toughness of the team).
    - repeatedly saying the Jets will not settle for being paper champs and backing it up with work ethic(see previous line)
    - Mentioning that his agent handles the contract and he is concerned with OTAs
    - When rumored contract numbers come out he shoots them down while staying classy and NOT showing the organization any disrepect while doing so

Revis has managed to not only make a huge impact for the team development in OTA but also downplay contract talk so that it won’t be a distraction. Does it all with a cool collected smile and doesn’t shine any negative light on the same front office that is rumored to have leaked the contract numbers which make him look greedy.

This is night and day vs the TJ/Leon Washington I ain’t showing up method. It makes you appreciate true leadership…..this guy deserves to be paid but no one will think twice to tell you his priority is to win a superbowl.

  18. avatar hank/naples says:

    TJBFan:

You bring up some very valid points about Revis, but to contrast him in the light of day to Washington in the dark of night is just not fair.

You must recognize that Revis has led a very CHARMED life ritght from the get go and has been REVERED and compensated at 100% of his value. Washington on the other hand, was introduced to the NFL school of hard knock by Mangini by doing countless of laps to pay for his misgivings.

We can all agree that Revis has led a very charmed NFL life while Whashington has been somewhat mistreated, misrepresented, and under appreciated by the Jet Brass.

  19. avatar AKA Jack says:

    hank-

How has Revis had a charmed life? He was given one of the toughest assignments in football, man to man corner, and has excelled at it from day 1. He outperformed his rookie contract and has developed into one of the best defensive players in the game. His play has been so exceptional that he has allowed the Jets to change the way they play defense and is the single biggest reason they were the number 1 defense in the league last season.

Leon was a very good NFL player. Good, not great. He was a third down/specialty back and a sometimes kick returner, not a starter. He was offered an new contract by the Jets and he decided it was not enough and was very vocal about it. Then he got hurt while playing under his old contract which he was only under because he decided not to take the new offer.

I hope he comes all the way back and plays like the old Leon but nobody knows if that will happen. He got traded for his worth. Revis has earned his new deal, he didn’t get it because of favoritism.

  20. avatar hank/naples says:

    Hi-Jack:

Please see the Definition for Charmed Life:

“An enchanted living, full of success, esp. popularity. Everyone loves you!”

Please show me where I use your word “FAVORITISM”

And FYI, Revis was not GIVEN anything!!! I’m sure He chose it, worked hard on it and EARNED it !!!!

Has the mind of the NFL fan become so fragile that we give millionaires credit for doing their job? The T.Os & the Pacman Jones of the league have turned the standard into the exeption .. It seems to me that you view Revis’s behavior as the exception where as I view it as the standard(for my team atleast).. I too luv Revis but not for any of the reasons you stated, I luv the guy because he’s a good football player & he helps my team win .. Does the guy deserve to make more than 1mill this season yes, but he has banked good money(+10mill) & he is also set to bank around 20mill in the next 3 season .. So not only has been paid but he will continue getting paid regardless of whether or not he gets a contract extension .. I do think the extention will get done because it is in both sides best interest to to get a deal done sooner rather than later .. (Revis more money/ F.O better cap relief in the distant future) .. I still think the F.O holds all the chips but Revis does “deserve” to be treated with respect ..

As far as TJ, he was a overrated RB & I’m glad he’s gone nomatter the reason , but LW was still trying to get that first big payday he just went about it the wrong way ..(wut I’m saying is you can’t lump their squabbles together ) but you are correct in stating that Revis is handling his contract situation much better than the two RBs..

  22. avatar TJBfan (twitter @infresco4) says:

    Hank,
I agree with you what you say, I meant to say night/day with controlling the contract situation. It’s not so much that Leon held out, but that he let his agent and wife mouth off about it….he is a grown man!!! Revis has lived a somewhat “charmed” life but he was compensated for the 1st round and delivered….not every 1st rounder does that. Also look at the other CB taken high that draft…Leon Hall, Aaron Ross, Chris Houston…we hit the jackpot and should make sure we keep Revis for years to come.

    Marvel,
I wouldn’t group TO and Pacman together (diva compared to scumbag) but I can see why you would think they form my view. The reason I consider him the exception is because he goes beyond others that do their job though.

Consider this: One of the biggest concerns this off season has been “team chemistry” correct? Revis was one of the first on record to welcome Jason Taylor to the Jets, He’s pushed Holmes to be tougher already, he’s helped assimilate both new CB to the scheme and team…

That my friend is beyond doing his job. Calvin Pace and Kris Jenkins do a damn good job on the field, have no issues off the field and are good with media as well…but it’s the extra steps that I mentioned which set Revis apart.

    Bent/Others discussing Braylon contract situation,
It matters not if Braylon ever learns to catch on a regular basis. While he has the speed and physical talent that he does he is a threat to be respected. Our run game became vastly superior when he joined out team mid season and so I don’t think its far fetched to sign him before the end of the season.

  23. avatar hank/naples says:

    TJBFan:

What you’re saying about the runnng game improving with Braylon is absolutely true. However I don’t believe that will be the deciding factor to keep him!!! I agreed with Ben Nevis in a previous post that the Jets will force Edwards to be consistent and raise his game a couple of notches before they extend his contract.

The new posturing by the Jets resulted from the aquisition of Bluntinio. Although Edwards has a gorgeous first step, they no longer MUST depend on him to “take the top off the defense” I believe Bluntonio is faster and will consitently beat him in the 40 and w/better hands.

That said, the Jets of course must first sign Holmes, which leads to the age old ” What came first, the chicken or the egg?” story !!

Forget Braylon, Bluntonio will demand a ” bushel full of $$$$”
