Link: CB Sean Smith claims Victory over Edwards

by Weeks on June 1st, 2010 at 10:15 am

Apparently, Miami Dolphins CB Sean Smith felt the need to turn up the heat on the Jets-Dolphins rivalry. According to the second year pro, he had some “good battles” with Braylon Edwards but in the end he won them both. Not to rain on your parade but Manish Mehta writes that was not the case at all.

The Dolphins, of course, swept the season series with their AFC East rivals. But it had little to do with Smith’s play against Edwards, who had a pair of productive games against Miami.

“We had a couple of good battles,” Smith told the Miami Herald last week.

The second-year pro later added, “I definitely won those battles.”

Really?

Truth be told, the Dolphins tried different defenders against Edwards. Cornerbacks Will Allen, Vontae Davis and Smith each had their cracks against the lanky Jets wide receiver.

Edwards had 9 catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns in two games against the Dolphins.

Smith apparently forgot about Edwards’ one-handed, 19-yard TD grab against him in Week Eight.

I took a quick look at the game tape and here’s what happened: Edwards lined up wide left and beat Smith in man-to-man coverage on the play. Smith never turned his head and found the ball. Edwards cradled it with his left hand and fought off Smith and safety Chris Clemons into the endzone.

Nobody expects the Dolphins to crown the Jets after their flurry off-season acquisitions, but Smith should give credit where credit is due.

You can make fun of Braylon Edwards all you want but at the end of the day, Edwards had Smith beat and Smith should give the receiver credit.

God the Phins are so hateable.

    Haters, they gon’ Hate.

Screw Smith. Let’s see how he does when he gets trucked by Edwards, burned by Holmes, left spinning around by Cotch and absolutely obliterated by the War Machine. Glad he thinks highly of himself, not many other people do.

This was such a pleasant blog to discuss the jets before that writer goaded all these fins fans to come here and troll. It was fun for a while but is getting boring. Someone here inevitably takes the bait and responds.

Brian and Bent, how about a moritorium on trolls for a few days until they get bored.

  4. avatar KYJetsFan says:

Don’t come on our blog sites until you get a REAL football logo! A Dolphin, really? You need a mascot that represents your team. How bout the “Miami Sound Machine J Lo Don Johnson Pastel Broke Back Jimmy Buffets”? Or, the Gay Sharks? Please respond quickly, as you’ve had a longer offseason to retort.

  5. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

This guy makes his bread with a rookie QB and a WR learning the offense. Whatever. They need to worry bout their pass rush. If this Wakefield dude is even decent and Koa Misi can do something right away.

  6. avatar RyanM says:

i cant wait to see what these dolphin fans have to say about this one. what excuses will they have to explain this idiot remark. the fans are just as delusional as that bum smith. the only one who beat braylon last year was himself with those dropped passes.

  7. avatar JetsFan65 says:

    Haha…

Braylon burned Smith so bad that his brain must have gotten cooked…

  8. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Only knock on Braylon is the concentration lapses that turn into drops.

Smith has some nice skils at CB, but Bray beat him and will continue to beat him, like a drum…

  9. avatar Green Lantern says:

    SMH..
See why I hate the Phins more than the Pats?
Cant wait to watch our Jets D Dine on Tuna !!!

  10. avatar Nafstejyn says:

Obviously, Smith is in awe of Edwards talent, if he feels that 9 catches, 138 yds, and 2 TD’s in 2 games means that he won the battle between them. I look forward to seeing what the numbers look like if Braylon Edwards ever gets the best of Smith in a game! LOL

  11. avatar Harvlis says:

We really have to whip the Dolphins twice, this coming season. The rivalry is on. You want Edwards — you got him. This time, Edwards will have a pre-season with the team and the Jets will have a QB who is no longer a rookie. A big ego can cloud one’s mind.

Pro football seems to be getting more like Pro Wrestling Daily, guess it’s the internet and the bleed out from what used to be just local stories to opposing cities. Certainly makes it more interesting in the off-season.

Umm. How come my post got deleted? It made it through the spam filter and then got deleted. There was certainly nothing offensive there.

Um, the post at the top of the list? It’s still there.

  16. avatar Stewballz says:

I love how the pic shows Smith in awe as Braylon demonstrates better coaching (attacking the ball at its highest point, and catching with his hands.) He doesn’t need to watch tape he needs to go back to pop warner and learn the basics… f’in clown! Go Jets!

  17. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

Sean Smith should be worried, he expects the same stuff coming this season. He will get caught being over zealous, cocky, peeking, etc.

  18. avatar WW85 says:

If the Fish want to make up lies when their season is over while the Jets are playing for a trip to the Supe, well I’m fine with that.

They talk about us so much in Miami I’m starting to think they have a crush. I def caught that remark from Smith the 1st time I read the article where he was quoted and thought to myself the exact same thing. Really? That’s not how I remember it going down lol.

    @Burbank

Totally agree, I thought Manish was doing a great job so far regardless, but calling out an idiot remark like that def just raised his score on Shane’s Aweso-meter.

  22. avatar Brendan says:

    Burbank,

Couldn’t agree more. Cimini would’ve caved.

  23. avatar SomeGuyInIowa says:

I seriously wish no ill will to other fans and unlike some, I try to have respect for others when I’m the visitor elsewhere. I am a Miami Dolphins fan, who loves football, but I don’t want things to get to an elementary level.

I’m sad to see my post was deleted and the article seems to have had an edit of itself. There had been a sentence stating that Smith was scouted beforehand as being arrogant, and my small post had stated that the recent Jets/Ryan was the epitome of arrogance. What’s the harm in that? Am I the only one that thinks that Ryan’s brash bravado comes off as arrogance? I understand he is quite confident in his team, but sometimes he takes it a bit far.

Here’s my ire with the whole Jets/Dolphins rivalry: The Jets were Miami’s Kryptonite in the past. It was tough to get wins on them. I realize this is blasphemy to state this as a Dolphins fan, but it’s the truth. So some of us get a little test, lol. Fast forward to last season. The Jets were talking like their “poo” doesn’t stink, acting like they are the god’s gift to football, beating their chest with their proclamations. The Jets seemed to act like they were the most physical tough guy team out there. Fast forward again to the Monday night game. It was a physical game and in my honest with slight bias opinion, the Jets line got punched in the face. It was an awesome game for both teams. I hate people that are overly PC, but Ryan makes himself sound like a cartoon character sometimes. Ryan talked about how big and bad his team was, but when Brown completed that pass from the Wildcat all the way up to running the ball in with seconds last, Miami’s offense was physical. When it came to Ryan using that voice of his to offer any kind of congrats to Miami, the few words he used seemed quite hollow. Even some members of the Jets had to use the hokey excuse of “oh they won with their gimmick plays.” The Jets used gimmick plays during the game itself, and continued to use them up through the playoffs as well. What’s good for the goose…

I love a good rivalry, so this stuff between the Jets and Dolphins is great! With free agency, it really does seem like we are “…cheering for a jersey,” so I’m glad the pot gets stirred–it brings so much to the games. I also think it’s great that the AFCEast spotlight is off the Patriots and it’s now being shared with the rest of the division. I guess the Bills need to get up to speed so we can really enjoy the division. To me and my homer self, one of the best divisions in the league.

  24. avatar Randy says:

I just find if funny how based on beating us two times, the Dolphins think they erased all their recent history and are FAR superior to us?You mean to tell me that because they won those 2 games they are a better team? I also find it funny how Dolphins overlook the fact that we were the better team on offense and defense in our second meeting, but Ginn Bailed them out.

At least us Jet fans are realistic.Sure we reached the AFC Champonship last season while the Pats got eliminated, but the Division still runs throuhg them until we dethrown them.EVEN Rex admitted that the Patriots are the team in the division until we win the AFC East…And coming from Rex, that says a lot.Ryan is not the kind of guy that makes another team look better than his own team.

I just dont understand how the Dolphins think 2 wins=Superior team.

I REALLY hope the Jets come ready ans STOMP out the Dolphins this season and sweep these bastards just to Shut these dillusional fans up, once and for all. What will the excuse be than?

  25. avatar juunit says:

To be fair, one 19 yard touchdown is hardly owning the guy. I don’t consider it to be a good game for a number one receiver unless he had around 100 yards, and Braylon had 138 in two games. So he did not own the Dolphins at all. However, he also was not owned by them. Two touchdowns and about 75 yards each game is not bad, it just isn’t great. My question is, how many of those yards besides that one touchdown were actually against Smith? If that is the only big play he gave up he actually has a decent point. Number one receivers are going to get yardage no matter what… unless they go up against Revis.

  26. avatar Weeks says:

    SomeGuy,

Under “weaknesses” very last sentence, it talks about Smith’s arrogance. http://www.mockingthedraft.com/2009/2/9/752764/scouting-report-sean-smith

  27. avatar Brendan says:

    juunit,

You have to realize that a Jets receiver getting 100 yards is highly unlikely when they were so committed to the run.

  28. avatar michael says:

    juunit…

Edwards’ first game came after he was on the team for about 3 or 4 days I think, so that’s actually pretty incredible.

  29. avatar SomeGuyInIowa says:

Thanks Weeks. The edit I was alluding to was from the above blog that originally had mentioned the scouting report, but I don’t seem to see it anymore. No big deal.

  33. avatar JetMetVet says:

CB Sean Smith is simply riding on the Jets recent media spotlight. Similar to that Channing Chowder guy last year. One way to get your name in the newspaper is to go after the Jets right now, create some hype, some controversy. And… Its working.

I think the Dolphins ball-boy has a shot of making a name for himself if he wants to call out Rex right now.

  34. avatar Jon Presser says:

Delusional and arrogant. Who is sean smith? The best fourth best corner on the field when we play them this year.

  35. avatar juunit says:

I suppose that may be true, but I’d still like to know how many yards he actually got against Smith. To me it just sounds like we’re making excuses here for Braylon. Now again, he didn’t have bad games, but he didn’t light it up. The point about the Jets being a heavy run offense is certainly valid though. I’d just like to have the facts before I make a judgement, because for all I know Smith deflected five passes against him and only allowed that one 19 yard catch in both contests. Which pretty much would qualify as Smith shutting Edwards down… it could’ve just been the rest of the defense that let Edwards get the yardage. Oh, and the comment section seems to think “judgement” is spelled “judgment.”

  36. avatar Bent says:

    Juunit – per PFF

    Week 5 – thrown at 7 times for 5-67-TD
Only 3 were to Braylon (2-39-TD)

    Week 8 – thrown at 3 times for 2-36
Only 2 were to Braylon (1-17)

  37. avatar SackDance99 says:

The accepted American spelling is “judgment” and not “judgement,” which is the Canadian/British version. Manish Mehta broke down Smith’s play pretty well and to say he “owned” Smith isn’t accurate if you get beaten for a 19 yard TD. It’s one thing to get beaten by a quick out by a guy who is 6-3, nearly 20 yards downfield is a coverage issue and Edwards beat him and got a TD. Hard to say you got the better of somebody who beat you in coverage for a TD.

  38. avatar SackDance99 says:

Oops, meant to say that he “owned” Braylon.

  39. avatar kennydajet says:

Suddenly the Jets are the most hated team in the NFL huh. If it isnt the whining Giants fans it is the wimpy loser dolphin fans. At least the Giants fans have some merit given the quality of their team and organization, but the dolphins???!!!!???. These guys make me laugh they sweep us for the 1st time last year after a decade filled with beatdowns and all of the sudden their players and ridiculous fans are all talkin smack? Phins fans are always on our message boards talkin smack and I am truthfully getting tired of it. I cannot wait until we face them because we will beat them down like the step children of the AFC East that they are. when Rex or one of our players say anything the media and everyone else complain that we have big mouths and talk too much. Now all I hear is talking from fans and players, especially from the dolphins, while the Jets have said nothing……I Hate the Dolphins….I can take the Patriots, but the dolphins I cannot stand. At least Patriots fans know when to shut up. This will all be settled after another decade of dominance by the Green and White. We will own the AFC East, then we will own NY and we will own the NFL……..GO JETS!!!!

  40. avatar BigKatFan says:

I’m gonna start by saying that I have NEVER heard of sean smith. then i’m going to say that every time Braylon caught a pass, smith lost. Lastly, the only reason smith even THINKS he is worth an ounce of crap is because he was graced with the privilege of getting to watch Darelle Revis in person twice. That can embolden even the worst players.

  41. avatar juunit says:

Yeah I mean that is doing a pretty decent job to be honest. I’m not sure it’s anything worth bragging about but he didn’t get run over at all. He just sounds stupid, because Revis did better than that in every game, and he doesn’t go around bragging about it like an angry twelve year old.

  42. avatar Tos9987 says:

I really hope they keep braylon the guys a beast . He would have been over 1k yards if he played with us the whole season even with the drops .

Hes a big play everytime he gets the ball

  43. avatar Brendan says:

    Tos,

I agree completely. Braylon is a force on the outside when run blocking, he is physically superior to everyone covering him, and he’s had a full offseason to work with the offense to get more comfortable. I am looking for big things from Braylon this year. I understand with the amount of weapons the Jets have, the stats may not be there. But I just want to see the guy with at least one impact play per game, and to have a steady season of production. Between Braylon, Holmes, Cotchery and Keller the opportunity will be there, and all four have been saying all the right things in terms of putting the team first. Should be fun to watch.

  44. avatar juunit says:

While I don’t believe “color” should be spelled “colour,” I absolutely believe that spelling “judgment” with no “e” makes absolutely no sense. The “e” changes the way the “d” and “g” sound. Without it, the word would sound more like ju-duh-guh-ment. But, I suppose you are right that it technically is the correct spelling. And people wonder why everyone says the English language is the dumbest and most difficult to learn in the world.

  45. avatar Bent says:

English is easy. It’s American-English that’s the problem! (sic)
