Under the Radar: Kenwin Cummings

by Weeks on June 1st, 2010 at 1:08 pm

It seems that there are a plethora of players to keep our eyes on throughout the season and Kenwin Cummings is certainly one of them. Despite Harris and Scott being the dangerous duo, Cummings is impressing his comrades and his coach so much so that he could very well be the backup on opening day.

“Kenwin’s coming,” proclaimed ILB starter Bart Scott. “One of the first things I said to Rex when I got here last year was this Kenwin kid, with some coaching, could be good — could be damned good.”

“Kenwin looks like a different guy to me,” Ryan said. “He’s moving in space well now and he’s physical when the pads come on, which is the best thing he does — he’s tough and can really strike you. The way he’s moving in the open field has been really impressive.”

“I’m moving better, I’m feeling lighter on my feet,” Cummings said. “I pretty much got the scheme of the defense down now. My main goal this year is to really contribute on special teams and any way I can.”

Although many believe UDFA’s aren’t truly important its amazing just how many gems you can find. Hopefully Cummings will be able to make valuable contributions while cementing himself into the Jets long term plans.

OT, but here’s an interesting article about the resurgance of the fullback position. The Terminator is mentioned:

UDFA are extremely important. Football is a game of depth. A team of stars is likely to suffer a few injuries, and if their backups are scrubs, they are likely to either not make the playoff, or else fall in an early round.

Look at the Colts offensive like. I think I read they are all UDFA.

Picking up a few decent UDFA will make for a strong team in several years.

They had BETTER find a few each year, or this team will have trouble competing. Remember, there have been 2-3 fewer draftees in Jets camp each of the past few years.

The jets trade mid round draft picks, to move up for guys like Sanchez, Revis, Harris. Keller and Greene. Those lost picks are offset somewhat by UNDFA’s such as Devito, Westerman and Cummings, the message to UNDFA’s is the Jets offer opprotunity, come on down.
It is interesting that Cummings bulked up to 270 to play Mangini’s 3-4, and has now slimmed to 255 to play for Rex this year dropping as low as 245 last year.

Wasn’t Bart Scott himself a UDFA?

    Lance,

Bart in fact did go undrafted.

big fan of cummings, he really stood out to me last year being real quick and now that he is bigger and faster with a year under his belt in the scheme?? i mean i am really pulling for this kid, I would love him to get some playing time…

Great article, does anyone get the feeling that Conner is going to get maybe like 60 carries this year to take some load off of LT and Greene? I think it would be a great idea. He can move for a big man.

From the first time I saw Cummings, I really liked him.
He seemed to have great instincts, even though he only played against scrubs during preseason. He just seemed like he was in the game, & his head wasn’t spinning like most rooks.
Happy to see he’s growing into the position. And happy we were able to keep him, these past two seasons.

i remember him having a good preseason las year i guess the practice squad made him hungrier and more determined to make this team this year
