While there’s been no change on the contract front for his players, Mike Tannenbaum admitted to the New York Post that contracts are being held up by the CBA holdup.
"The same energy and tenacity we used to find these players is the same amount of passion we’re going to put into getting these players extended," he told The Post last night before emceeing the New York City chapter of the Alzheimer Association’s annual gala.
[…]
Tannenbaum, though, continues to blame the Jets’ glacial pace with the Core Four on the uncertainty plaguing the entire NFL caused by the lack of a new collective bargaining agreement.
"There’s a lot of issues," Tannenbaum said last night. "I wish the issues were simplistic, but there’s nothing simplistic about where we are. That doesn’t make a deal impossible. It just makes it more difficult."
[…]
"These past six months with all the contract stuff have really drained the fun out of the game for me," Mangold told The Post last week. "It’s one of those things you don’t want to have to worry about."
Tannenbaum couldn’t offer Mangold much solace last night, refusing to commit to a timeline.
"At some point, we’d like to extend Nick," Tannenbaum said. "When that’s going to happen is hard to say. We’d like to come up with something that works for him and works for us."
If those darn CBAs are in the way, then why send any contract offer to Darrelle then to send him one that was a clear insult to one of the league’s best defensive players. If that was the case, they shouldn’t have opened contract talks at all.
Tannenbaum is playing some dirty pool and it’s going to be a dangerous game … especially after the “Darrelle wants $20 million a year story”

I would think the reason they sent one to Revis is because he is likely the player least hampered by the 30% rules in finding ways to extend him, but the Jets may have been better off just not really going down the route of promising guys new deals. Its getting harder and harder for the GMs to hide behind the rules of the situation when the 49′ers and some other squads showed exactly how you navigate the rules.

No I agree ..it was insulting .. and makes you wonder if the CBA argument is just posturing? .. why even bring up an extension? the Jets started this and now have to deal with the fallout .. we all know the range a cap hit would have been or will be ($130M range) .. I don’t buy the CBA argument .. Mr T is way too smart for that ..

I dont think a new offer is coming but I figure they will just restructure the deal to allow him to make alot more money this year than he was set to make. The same will be done for others set to be paid that low this season. The CBA is a very good reason why teams are not writing up these contracts right now. The NFL needs to work out these issues to avoid the potential looming lockout. The country cannot afford to miss a year of football and revenue to boot.

“Tannenbaum is playing some dirty pool and it’s going to be a dangerous game … especially after the “Darrelle wants $20 million a year story””
Huh? Dirty pool? They sent him an offer which may or may not have been insulting in an almost unprecedented attempt to extend a guy when they really don;t need to for 3 years. Not sure what Tanny is doing wrong here, negotiating and starting low (likewise Darelle starts high) is part of the game of getting a new deal.

this is BS. He makes it sound like they can only do one contract at a time. sign these guys already. harris and Mangold need contracts asap.

Bent:
The problem here is NOT the shape, form, substance or length of Revis contract !!. We all know Revis just wants to be paid as the best DB in football and deserves it.
The problem is the History (precedent) that Tannenbaum has set in all contract extensions with his core players.
The pattern is undeniable.
1) “Sources” leak information to the Media
2) Rookie gets drafted to replace him (except w/Kendall)
3) Tannenbaum renegotiates players contract down while refusing to honor clauses beneficial to player.
4) Player gets “released “to try and make outside deal or gets traded.
The problem is the players A) watch all this very closely, B) talk among themselves and C) their agents are very well informed (ears to the ground and hear $$$$ drop) and know how other teams handle their players contracts
Tannenbaum must stop that phony smile and media BS about how “we take care of our own” and start showing it to the players.
Hey Mr. Beancounter, action not words !!!

What the Jets should be telling Revis is this:
“We know you are the best CB, possibly defender, in the NFL. You are better than Aso. But if we give you a contract like that, we may not be able to surround you with the kind of talent you need to play with in order for our team to remain a consistent Super Bowl contender. By taking a little less than the Aso contract, we can put that money back into the team and make sure there are always talented guys rushing the QB, stopping the run and playing opposite you in the back 7. You’ll be the best player on the best defense in football. You’ll be an immortal player to Jets fans, a NY sports legend and the potential to earn money through endorsments etc after football will be endless. You can have the biggest deal for a DB in NFL history until the next big thing comes along or you can be a legend…we are here to work with you”
Revis value to the Jets is like Mo Rivera to the Yankees. Mo Riv could have held a gun to the Yanks head and demanded some OBSCENE contract. But he didn’t. Although he is probably the highest paid closer, he could have demanded ace money. In baseball you can do that cause there is no cap.
My gut tells me that although it may not always be smooth and pretty, Revis remains a Jet for a very, very, very long time
-
Not to mention that Aso contract is absurdity at its finest. Getting paid like a top-5 QB? Are you kidding me?
If you are able to get a figure of how much all top CB’s are paid it something around $9-10million. Then there is Asomugha who gets paid 150% more the next highest?
Seriously, is there any way to monitor this? GM’s should just get together and aprove any market setting contract. Im sure 31-31GM’s would have approved, Davis doesnt have a GM, he is insane
-
LOL @ being offered 10 mil being insulting. Shoot give me that contract then :)
-
Yea the Aso contract is just Al Davis, as usual, showing how the game has passed him by and how much of a fool he really is…
Revis should be the highest paid DB in the game, just that the current one got an OBSCENE deal that will hamper a team from having the resources to surround its great player with complimentary pieces capable of winning a championship…
Al Davis screws it up for everyone…as usual

The way this particular contract was structured, renegotiation was likely discussed before it was even signed. This is technically Revis’ last year and he’s “only” making a million. If Revis were to get injured this season, the Jets could potentially let the “buy backs” lapse and Revis’ value on the open market would plummet. Everyone usually talks about the “nightmare” scenario for the Jets, well there is also a downside for Revis if he plays this year without a new deal. To sum up, the idea that the Jets should not have “opened” negotiations is off-base because Revis’ 2010 salary and contract have probably been part of an ongoing dialogue that likely commenced in 2007.

Can sopmeone explain to me how Revis signed a contract that only pats him $1 million in his 4th year? Revis held out for 2 weeks of training camp before he signed this contract, so how did Revis’s agent want this deal and not see that Revis will only be paid $1 million? This makes no sense to me.

I am not sure how insulting the offer was. If it was about 10 Mill per year that is not really that insulting.
Revis held out at the beginning and signed this deal. Now he is going to hold out again with 2 years left.
I am not so sure that he is as “selfless” as we are led to believe.
It’s also hard to figure out how to structure a contract if you don’t know the rules that the game will be governed by in a couple of years.
