Dark Contractual Clouds Looming?

by Bassett on June 13th, 2010 at 1:39 pm

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, he believes that the Jets front office has already made a decision to hold off on giving new contracts to a number of players who have expiring deals next year. With a new collective bargaining agreement still up in the air it makes sense that this would be the direction of the front office as they don’t want to paint themselves into any corners … but at the same time, you can understand how this might frustrate some of their most talented players who are looking for some long-term stability with the Jets.

C Nick Mangold, LB David Harris and LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson will not get contract extensions in 2010. The Jets have yet to begin negotiations with any of the players and, considering the uncertainty of the CBA, the organization is showing no sense of urgency. The Jets probably won’t admit this publicly, but I think they’ve already made a decision to wait.
By waiting until after the season, GM Mike Tannenbaum is putting himself in an almost impossible position, with Mangold, Harris, WR Braylon Edwards, WR Santonio Holmes and CB Antonio Cromartie all unsigned. Say goodbye to two or three of those players.

If the Jets are really so concerned about the collective bargaining agreement than they should just blame the contract holdouts on that. What causes some sort of trouble in my mind is that the Jets have room to get some deals done this year, so to me it’s wasting an opportunity no matter what the new CBA might look like.

The question as to whether Darrelle Revis gets a new deal and whether that might affect the team’s ability to sign other players could be something to watch out for.

It’s a possibility, but the Jets will have all the way until March to get deals done with those guys.  I think Brick, Mangold and Harris all have the temperament to be patient. But I am more concerned about Holmes, Edwards and Cromartie. The last three to me are the guys who will be much more likely to want to hit free agency. Of that group of three, I’d say Holmes is the most likely to stay.

Revis I$land. From all indications, the Darrelle Revis dispute will last well into the summer, perhaps all the way up to the regular-season opener. Both sides seem entrenched in their positions. Revis is adamant about being the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL (can you blame him?), meaning he wants to be paid at least as much as Nnamdi Asomugha (in the $16 million-a-year neighborhood). Ordinarily, the Jets wouldn’t have a problem with making Revis No. 1 in salary at his position, but they regard the Asomugha deal as an aberration, one of many wacko deals executed by Al Davis.

Posting articles by Cimini like this is tantamount to posting articles by Florio. How can you continually so demean this blog?

Besides the fact that it is alarmist, inspiring fear among fans; not to mention negative to the Jets who harmed Cimini’s incompetent stooges who when they went elsewhere after whining were soon let go by their new teams; does anyone think Tannenbaum or Woody would tell Cimini this was their plan?

IOW, when a so called mediaot writes “news” based on a premise he himself pulled out of a dark smelly place, others who quote or refer to it should not be surprised to find smelly unpleasant on the bottom of their shoes or on their face.

This is so ridiculous. How about we just win the Superbowl this year, then they can all get endorsement deals and STFU. Jesus.

  3. avatar fattyboomboom says:

its a pain, itsdistracting from all the fun and potental on the field

The way the jets will look at it is that if theres a shut out, players don’t get to be free agents until they have 6 years service so they can prob hold on 2 whoever they want

  4. avatar JETS#1 says:

WTF!!! i get brick cause he has 2 years left and even harris because of all these undrafted lbs we got can replace him but how can you not resign Mangold he is not asking to be the highest paid he only wants some years extended to his contract

  5. avatar matt says:

i dont know y we dont give these guys alot of money this year with no cap and then decrease their money after that so that it doesnt hurt the team.

  6. avatar Carlito7 says:

UURREEKAAAAA!!!!!!!…….IT SO SIMPLE, I don’t know why know one else has thought of this regarding Revis’s new deal. Ask Nnamdi Asomugha to take a pay cut……BOOM! problem solved.

  7. avatar Bent says:

Here’s how I responded to this story in another thread –

That’s little more than a guess by Cimini, although my thoughts before the offseason were that most of them (and Revis) would have to wait. It’s only the fact that the Jets have initiated talks and stated their desire to retain them long term that we assume otherwise.

He also says Tannenbaum is “painting himself into an impossible position” by waiting and that they’ll have to say goodbye to two or three of the seven guys they need to resign. A few points:

    1. Criticizing him for something you’re guessing he’ll do is a low blow.
    2. Waiting saves them money, so why should it make it any more difficult?
    3. When I modelled a scenario in which they might retain all seven, that assumed the deals would all begin in 2011.

Carlito – I know you’re joking, but they maybe are. If there isn’t a lockout, you can perhaps expect the Raiders to cut him next year, so while Revis might want to earn as much as Asomugha, even Asomugha isn’t likely to earn that much.

Matt – The CBA limits the extent to which you can do that, because salary can only increase by a maximum of 30% and bonuses are spread over the life of the contract for cap purposes. Brick, Nick and Harris had low salaries last year, so you can hardly give them any extra money. For Revis, they could increase his current year salary to about $9m, but then they would probably have to increase the cap hit in 2011 too, which is what they hope to avoid.

  8. avatar brian311 says:

I don’t see it as a doomsday scenario at all. The closer We get to 3011 the possibility of a year without football becomes very real. The players would be smart to take the offers on the table which would include signing bonuses. If not they role the dice That they won’t see another dollar until 2012

  9. avatar Reprocity says:

Tanny is in a tough spot and has to make unpopular moves. I’m not faulting him or any of the players on these contracts. I just hope it all works out.

  10. avatar War Machine says:

Damn i hope im alive then. 3011 is a long time.

  11. avatar Zartan says:

If the rookies will be held to a minimum deal, doesn’t that leave the option for Vets to have more money to get their deals done?

Don’t know how accurate Madden contracts are but Revis makes about the same as Asomgha. Aso makes only 17mil in the fianl deal, which Bent already said, he most likely will not see.

  12. avatar Green Goblin says:

Revis is a great CB but he is in no way worth more than 12 million p/yr!!!!!!!!! If Tanny gives him a penny over that than he’s crazy….Revis is a great cornerback, not a great quarterback!!!!! The Jets hold all the cards so if Revis wants to be a cry baby let him sit out and start Lowery/Wilson in his place…I think it’s Jets fans and the media that helped inflate Revis’s ego…In reality, he’s only had one great season and he wasn’t even the Defensive Player of the Year!!!! Charles Woodson had at least as good a year as Revis, way better statistically!!! I love when Jets fans say that it’s not about the statistics and that if you watch Revis play he was the better player than Woodson last year..Meanwhile they never watched Woodson in one game last year so how could they judge his importance to his team….It’s like when Yankees fans would say Jeter doesn’t have the numbers that A-rod has but he’s better…Give me a break…How come they don’t mention the fact that Revis may have had his best season last year because Rex’s system is a CB first and a great CB like Revis will really excel in it…The guy is a great player, there’s no debate…But if Tanny gives him more 12 million p/yr than he’s insane!!! Tanny should just hold Revis to his contract if he doesn’t like the offer and then do what New England did to Asante Samuel and lock him up with the franchise tag in the future..If he wants to cry about how he HAS to be the highest paid CB in the NFL and wants a better contract than that ridiculous contract those morons in Oakland gave Nnamdi Asomugha then let him hold out and I say good riddance!!!! That’s why you have to respect Tom Brady….The guy could have been making WAY more than the contract he signed but he isn’t a greedy sob!!!! Revis seems to be the complete opposite…I heard even as a rookie he was a very hard contract negotiation!!!! Revis wants to be paid more than Brady!!!! Revis is a great CORNERBACK but Brady is an even better QUARTERBACK!!!!! Revis wants to be paid more than Peyton Manning!!!!! Even the biggest Revis fans can’t pretend that Revis is more important to his team than Manning is!!!!! I’m a Jets fan before a Revis fan….12 million p/yr is a lot of money…It’s a very fair deal…Why root for him to get more than what is fair (or more than he needs in 10 lifetimes) and ruin the Jets chances of signing other players…Why? Just so Revis can buy a private jet….If Revis stinks next year I guarantee he won’t return the money….Tanny holds all the cards here so he shouldn’t cave in….Tanny should offer a fair deal but not a cent more…

  13. avatar James in TN says:

    just extend mangold

  14. avatar Green Goblin says:

What happened to the Jets imminent signing of AD? At this point he can’t be asking for much and the Jets could really use him for pass rush help since they never addressed the need in the draft and I’m not sold on Taylor being able to do this on his own…Tanny should sign him just because he would add depth at ILB…If Harris or Scott go done, the Jets have NOBODY to fill in…Also, AD is versatile and played like a hall-of-famer under REX…AD should be a priority…

  15. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Green Goblin has officially had his visitation rights to Revis Island REVOKED FOR LIFE…

Of all the players on the Jets to try and demean their value to the team or kid themselves into thinking that the Jets won’t miss a beat without them….this kid picks Revis

You can’t win for losing with some Jets fans

  16. avatar Tos9987 says:

we need to lock up the guys with contracts expireing at the end of this year first .

Revis can wait imo . I know it will only make the situation worse but I think he should be the last in line for a new deal .

I really hate hearing about how they have to do it for there familes . like in a case with revis ,where he already collected millions . I dont think he will ever be hurting .

In leons case I see it as a must cause he never collected that kind of money .

I am starting to get mad a revis . Apperently he dosent care about the team and wining a championship . I think we just send him to the raiders for aso let him get his money in that s#$% hole.

Althought I think lately this has happened too much and the radiers are compiling a decent team . I think they will be much better this year.

But who wants to live in oakland

  17. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Green Goblin

You reveal your ignorance every time you post…

“I’m not sold on Taylor being able to do this on his own”

You ever hear of Calvin Pace??? The best pass rusher on the team??? Yea, Jason Taylor was brought in to be the guy on the other side of Pace…not to do it on his own. Every team knew Pace was the team’s best pass rusher and often drew the most attention from O lines. Now with Taylor on the other side, maybe getting favorable matchups with Pace getting most of the attention, I’d say the need was addressed, at least for the short term

Not to mention Jason Taylor is an INFINITELY better pass rusher than Adalius Thomas is right now and ever was in their respective careers…and don’t tell me about age because Taylor was so much better than AD was last year it wasn’t even close

AD would be nice to have…not even close to a PRIORITY

  18. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

At the end of the day, all these so called PROBLEMS the Jets have are a result of drafting well and having a good, winning football team.

In what should be the most exciting and most anticipated Jets season in decades or so….this kind of BS dominates Jets fans attention

The season cannot get here soon enough

  19. avatar SackDance99 says:

All these guys are under contract and have no option, besides holding out, which would be a disaster for any of them. A lockout would take their 2011 salary away and a holdout would just tack on the year in 2012. Revis would make his $20 million option unguaranteed if he holds out. Holding out the 2010 season is just not an option.

I have to say that as much as I like Revis and think he’s the best CB in the NFL, his stance that he should get better money than Aso is not sitting well with me. As Bent says, Aso will likely be cut next season and, then, the highest paid CB will fall to around the $10 million level. If Revis is paid 60% higher than the next best CB, the Jets would be forced to cut him or force him to renegotiate. I understand that players have short careers and must max their income, but Aso’s contract is an illusion. Folks on here criticize Tanny, but isn’t Revis forcing him to take a hard line? I don’t blame him one bit for taking the position that the Aso contract is an insane aberration. And, fwiw, if I were going to spend $16 million a year on a defensive player, it would be on a DeMarcus Ware-type.

I just watched the Pats and Bengals (playoff) games and the biggest hole in the Jets defense was the lack of a bona fide pass rusher. And, fwiw, Revis got a big INT and 3 penalties against the Bengals and was a little lucky that Ochocinco didn’t hold that corner TD. If the pass rush was on either Palmer or Brady sooner, would Revis Island be as important? I don’t know, but the idea that the Jets defense wouldn’t be dominant without Revis strikes me as an overstatement.

  20. avatar JayM says:

Good interview with MrT. This one question that was asked kind of dispells Florio’s arguement that the Jets do not play their own players.

Q: Do you think your players believe that if you’re a young player coming up through your organization, that you do want to pay them?

A: I would look at our track record: Which young players left here and produced someplace else? In our system, we have to make choices all the time, and we’re not going to be perfect. All I’m saying is you can look back at our track record, and I think we’ve done a reasonably productive job of identifying who has helped us and who can’t. Again, they’re not easy decisions to make, but that’s what we have to do in a capped or uncapped system, we have to make choices of where we’re going to allocate our resources.

    http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2010/06/more_from_mike_tannenbaum_on_c.html

The Cimini article is all speculation by him and he states no facts on this is what the Jets will do. Typical Cimini just negative crap.

  21. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Revis isn’t spilling oil in the Gulf Coast or invading a defenseless country in search of world domination and in the name of insatiable greed. A lot of people forget that in most of these guys cases, they come from VERY VERY poor backgrounds, some from rough, crime riddled neighborhoods…and they want to take their families and everyone close to them as far OUT of those places as they can.

Its a pride thing as well. When you are the best at your job, you want your salary to reflect it. Whether you are an executive or a foreman on the docks, can’t blame someone for at least trying…doesn’t mean a compromise can’t or doesn’t have to be made to satisfy all parties involved…

I know 10 million is A TON of money. Its beyond life changing…but you have to think about how much money the NFL makes or generates as a result of these “greedy” players. Owners, sponsors all line their pockets with FAT amounts of cash…the players want a piece of that pie. If you are in business with someone, and you are basically the reason that your customers buy the product, wouldn’t you want to make sure you were getting your FAIR SHARE ? You are DAMN SKIPPY I would…I aint letting NO ONE F@CK me out of my money

So to regular joe’s like us, 10 million is a GIGANTOR sum of dough…but to Revis, and for the company he helps make so much mone, the 10 mill is not THAT much…its all relative to how you look it at

Im done now…I’m leaving it at that

  22. avatar hanknaples says:

    Bent:

Two points. Why keep refrencing the 30% limit under the present CBA when in fact this ceiling will expire within the next six months and Revis’ extension will run concurrent to 2012. And

Why is it argued that Revis is not a QB and should not demand QB $$$. It is nuts to think that the value of Brady to the Offense ≠ The value of Revis to the defense !!!

A DC has to plan for Brady as a OC has to plan for Revis. They both dominate the game on their respective sides. Dont they?

Edie, How many companies have a ~57% payroll?

  24. avatar WW85 says:

I Have to agree that Revis should be the bottom priority as he has 3 years left. Brick has 2 years left I think. The top priorities are Mangold & Harris in their final years. They both deserve fresh contracts & both would have legit rights to sit out camp.

  25. avatar Bent says:

Hank – I basically agree with the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs, although I didn’t personally compare him to a QB.

As for the 30% rule comment, I didn’t really understand what you were trying to say. I mention it because if Revis gets a contract extension now, it must comply with the 30% rule. This means he can earn salary of about 9m now and his annual salary increase is limited to less than 3m. It is less of an issue for Revis as it is for Brick, Nick and DH for whom it has a major effect on what can be paid to them as salary if they get an extension now.

If he gets his extension later, the 30% rule may not apply (probably not, but depends on the CBA). It doesn’t look like he wants to wait until later though.

“We’re working hard to see if there’s a landing spot that’s good for both sides. Darrelle is a guy that’s done everything we’ve asked on the field, off the field, he’s a leader, he plays hurt, he’s done everything that we could ask any of our players to do. It’s incumbent upon us to embrace challenges and not — I think the easy solution would be, ‘You know what, this is not a great year because the CBA is going to be up in six months and you know what, we’ll just wait.’ And that day may come, but I’m committed to working tirelessly, my staff and I, talking with (owner) Woody (Johnson) and (head coach) Rex (Ryan) on a day to day basis. We’re looking at every conceivable way to see if there’s a landing spot that’s good for both sides, because I think that’s the right thing to do. Again, I think the easy thing to do would have been to do nothing, but Darrelle truly deserves a new deal, and hopefully there’s a spot that’s good for both sides.”

I understand the whole money thing but its more or less the situation that happened with the Black Sox…

Professional sports not only generate mega bucks on a legit level for the US…but you also have to take into account the BILLIONS that are made OFF THE PLAYERS BACKS, by gambling, both illegally and legally.

The system may be broken but the fact remains is that athletes salaries have gotten to the point they are now because the demand for the product is so great and the bottom line continues to grow as well

    Harris- 598K

  38. avatar Tos9987 says:

    Eddie

Thats a great point . The problem is that there is a salery cap . I wouldn’t have any problem if he wanted 20 mill , if there wasent one .

Bottom line is if we need to loose anyone of the other three (hariss Mangold or brick ) to sign revis thats a problem . I say let him go for money not titles somewhere else .

I cant see him having a hard time supporting w/ 12 mill a year for the next 6

  39. avatar Reprocity says:

Eddie, I would say the game is the product and the players are somewhat interchangeable. I think the Cap was set to go to ~58% when the owners opted out. That’s way to high for a “Normal” biz but we agree the NFL isn’t a normal business model.

What does get me is though, is the players consistently saying “Our carrers are so short” “We have to maximise our earnings while we still can” and stuff like that. Yet they’ve done close to NOTHING!!! for retired players!!!! How stupid are they! They want 58% right now for the active players who avg 5 year careers but give an embarssing little amount to retired players. If the avg player plays for 5 years but lives for another 50 why wouldn’t you set yourself up for the fifty years instead of only 5!

  40. avatar Reprocity says:

Revis gets 10-15 Million but what does Al Toon get? Or Chrebet? People with serious medical problems need good insurance yet the union only cares about active players. Money now but when you’re done and will really need help they’re told to get lost. Anyone else get angry hearing about these guys selling the SB rings to help pay their medical bills?

  41. avatar Reprocity says:

We need a 40% cap and at least another 10% going to the retired players. If the union and the players want more money, help the NFL revenue grow. The more money the NFL makes the more money the players make. You don’t increase a payroll percentage because the company makes more. That’s a really bad model. The NFL and the players need to align their interest and that starts with a salary cap % that doesn’t increase. They all make more money or they all lose money. If the players want more money tell them to start their own league!

  42. avatar seth says:

Plus revis has only had one amazing year. He’s been a probowler before but last year was his first really dominant season.

The raiders had to overpay because of how bad they are and it was a FA contract. 12 million a yr should be plenty for Revis.

I do think they should give Mangold and Harris a new deal though. They are the rocks of our team and are in the last yr of their contracts. I understand there is no CBA but for certain players you have to make exceptions. I’m sure if Sanchez’s deal was up they’d pay him. Giants signed Rolle to a deal, etc.

  44. avatar dakar says:

    green gobblin and sack…

i agree with the both of you 100 %…

it seems like there are some jet fans that will sell the team for 1 player…there is no ? about his talent… but, signing revis for 16 mill. a year is just wrong…he is a CB…not a GREAT QB…12 mill. a year is more than fair…trade him…i dont care…but no1 is worth 16 mill a year…i’d think twice before giving that kind of money to manning or brady…and there SB winners…

revis can take 16 mill. people and kiss both sides of there asses and he’s still not worth 16mill a year…

every1 knows the ASO contract was the doings of a dying senile owner in AL DAVIS who just hasn’t yet done us all the favor and just die…look at the deal he made with the DT…TOMMY KELLY…or whatever his name is…$50 mill.plus contract for a nobody…the contracts this moron made with his players should not be referenced by any agent due to the fact he’s a self made laughing stock who is ruining the game with his insanity…

maybe some1 in the OAK. org. already put a stop to him by going before a judge a claiming and proving he is mentally unstable to run the team…this asumption is made by the way they draft this year…which was way smarter then his/they’re usual drafting ways…just my thoughts…

  45. avatar JETS#1 says:

guys I do think Revis is worth the money he is asking him taking out the teams #1 reciver and cause the qb to wait in the pocket longer helped make our defence #1 look at what happen to the steelers when they lost Troy

  46. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Bent,

Back in the day (and I mean early 80s), I remember Klecko and Gastineau talking about sacks versus pressures. I think Klecko said, and Gastineau agreed, that they thought 1,000 pressures equals a sack. Their point was that unless the QB is down on the ground, he can still complete a pass. The Jets pressure in the Pats and Bengals games was very good and both Brady and Palmer had passes dropped that could’ve been TDs.

In the Bengals game the Jets often had Digs or Smith come free as the 5th or 6th rusher. My point is that if the Jets had a legit pass rusher, the Jets wouldn’t have to rush more than 5 and could double the other team’s no. 1 WR. What I saw in both games was a pass rush that just missed sacks by miliseconds. A bona fide pass rusher would just make the pressure better and ease the pressure on the CBs. Right now, the Jets need Revis to hold his coverage for a long time and he’s amazing, but I keep on saying this: quick, name the ’85 Bears top CB? Now, name 3 guys on their front 7…people remember Dent, Hampton, Singletary, Marshall, the Fridge, et al. far more than they remember Mike Richardson or Leslie Frazier (the starting CBs). The Bears were near impossible to pass on because their front 7 generated extreme pressure (the Fridge had 5 sacks!?!). I know it’s a “chicken or egg” argument, but $16 million on Revis when the Jets still don’t have a legit pass rusher would tie a ton of money in a position that, in many ways, is less useful.

As an aside, people here often get on Bart Scott. They should watch the first Pats game…Scott played as fine a defensive game as you will ever see. Blitzing, run support and pass coverage…he was just everywhere. Probably the most over-looked great player on the Jets defense. I have a new-found respect for him…hard to believe that Revis is worth 2 Bart Scotts.

  47. avatar SackDance99 says:

    dakar,

Take Aso’s contract away and the next 3 highest CB contracts are all a little below $10 million per season. Isn’t paying somebody what will be in 2011 60% over market insanity? Revis deserves to be the highest paid CB, but if there is football next season and he’s paid $11-12 million, he WILL be the highest paid CB. I know that folks have to posture in contract negotiations, but Revis will be the top paid CB, just not in 2010…what’s so bad about that?

  48. avatar Bent says:

Sack – yeah, that’s true. Even under pressure, guys like Brady can still get it done.

I agree, Bart’s contribution is under appreciated. That’s why I don’t think the DH will get a contract as big. It also underlines what a huge loss he was in the AFC Title Game. The team was able to cope a lot better while Harris was hobbled.

  49. avatar J-E-T-S says:

the jets need revis but revis really really needs the jets and rex in order to be as successful as last year so he needs to get a reality check and just take 10 mil and be happy. i think we need mangold, the brick, and david harris more than we need revis so tanny do what you gotta do.
