On speaking to head coach Rex Ryan about Monday…

We’re going to talk today. He and I are going to chop it up today and just try to see eye-to-eye and make sure this thing doesn’t get out of hand. That’s the one thing we don’t want to do here. Like I said, I don’t want this to go negative. I said that yesterday, but like I said, negotiations do get crazy sometimes, and we’re trying to stop it before it gets to that point.

On missing plays on Monday due to injury/light-headedness…

I was really light-headed. The hamstring part, no. You’ll see me running out there all day. I added it on, but I did feel a little light-headed. I told DT (Dennis Thurman). The coaching staff here does a great job. When somebody is feeling something – it can be the slightest thing – they’ll tell us to sit down fast. I sat down a little bit and talked to DT about it, and he told me to sit down. The hamstring thing, I did go a little further. I didn’t have a hamstring, but the light-headedness, yes.

On Rex saying he’ll be a Jet for a long time…

I want to be a Jet forever. I don’t want to get released or traded. One of my goals is to stay on one team, do what Darrell Green did. He played twenty-something years for the Washington Redskins. I would like to do that.

On chemistry of the Jets team…

It’s going good. This mini-camp and OTA’s, we’ve been having some intense practices. It’s good. I see LaDainian (Tomlinson) shaking out there like his commercial, Braylon (Edwards) making some great catches, Santonio Holmes making great catches, J-Co (Jerricho Cotchery)…the biggest thing is (Mark) Sanchez. He’s impressed me a lot. I’m looking forward to him leading our offense this year. The pieces are coming together. Our defense, we just want to be some aggressive animals out there, go chase after that ball, and not make it good for the offenses.

On training camp…

Offense is more (about) trying to get a chemistry and make sure everybody is on the same page. Defense is more (about) playmakers flying around. Both sides are doing well. It’s great competition out there. I didn’t expect Sanchez to be back this early from his knee injury. He’s impressed us a lot and is running that offense very well.

On Holmes touchdown catch in the morning session practice…

There was a little bit of miscommunication out there between us, and you can’t do it, especially back in the secondary. You’ve got to be on the same page. We misconmmunicated back there. I got a little bit underneath and Jim (Leonhard) tried to help me at the last second and it didn’t work out. It’s just all about communication and we preach that a lot around here.

Wow, admitted lying to your bosses in a public interview… Nice negotiation strategy. He may be a lock corner, but you have to question his character…

  2. avatar Rudibager says:

Eh, seems to me like he did and said some things that he not only knows would hurt his negotiations, but were just flat out the wrong thing to do.

Yeah he admitted it publicly. I think people of strong character are man enough to do that. Hopefully what happened Monday was just a temporary lapse in good judgement, and he gets back on track.

  3. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Darrelle already proved what kind of man he is last year when he put that defense on his back and carried it as far as it could go…

Revis home is right here playing for Rex Ryan

One bad day in 3 years does not make someone a bad guy

  4. avatar Brendan says:

    Eddie,

You have to give credit to the whole defense. He was awesome, no doubt, but it’s not like he did everything.

I have a problem with him lying to the coaches, you can’t just dismiss it. Rex’s #1 thing is trust. He has a environment built on trust in the locker room. Trust the guy next to you, trust your coaches, trust yourself, and everything will fall into place. Revis hasn’t ruined that trust, but he can’t keep acting like this or he will damage it, at least temporarily.

I think when Rex sits down with the young man (and remember, he still is a young guy) and talks to him, things will get a lot more smooth with this whole situation.

  5. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Brendan

I cant do this again today…

The whole defensive scheme was built around him…Rex said it, Pettine said it, Thurman said it…I dont know what else to say.

The kid messed up. He knows it and if you read the article he is starting to change his tune

  6. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Im also sure that Dennis Thurman cracking up on the sideline damaged the trust tree…

Rex, Thurman and Revis are fine. Rex just didnt know about the whole situation and commented before he knew what Revis said

I bet They are laughing behind everyone’s back about this stuff

  7. avatar greene says:

    Eddie DiGio,

if you dont wanna spill the water, dont shake the pot. ;)

and the defense may be built around Revus, but Rex Ryan is no fool, he can build defenses around anyone.

you cant build the best house on the block with cheap wood, regardless how good the foundation.

  8. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    greene

So just plug anyone into Revis spot and its the same result…

If that is your opinion, thats fine…

    Agree to Disagree

  9. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

I think some of the fans are madder about what happened than Rex and the Jets coaches are about it…

  10. avatar greene says:

    come on Eddie,

obviously, you know i didnt meant it like that.

the fact of the matter is, Ryan can create an elite defense without Revis.

and Rex Ryan can’t plug anyone into Revis’ spot. Rex Ryan just need to change up his defense where the load is not so hard on the secondary. and Rex Ryan has done and many super bowl champs have won with great defense with questionable secondaries.

  11. avatar Brendan says:

Rex was most certainly not laughing when he heard Revis had lied to him. He was clearly bothered by it. I doubt he’s laughing about Revis telling him one thing then going to the media and contradicting him.

And I am aware that the scheme had much to do with Revis. That doesn’t mean he put the defense on his back. That saying can’t really apply to a #1 defense, because you can’t have just one capable guy carrying an entire 11-man squad to #1. He was the most important reason why they were #1, sure, but it’s not like he had to drag this unit to elite status, they have very good players all over the unit.

And read the article linked to above, Thurman had NO idea Revis was pulling a contract stunt. He even said int he interview that he asked Revis if this was legitimately bothering him, to which Revis answered yes.

So I don’t think you’re assessment of the situation is very accurate.

  12. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

And Fatso Mike Francesca was on yesterday, said he was talking to some NFL guys (Parcells)…I dont always agree with the guy but he is friends with Parcells and knows a ton of NFL guys

Simply- Revis allows for the Jets to play the way they play…they can do more things because wherever he is lined up you dont have to give him help over the top

  13. avatar greene says:

    Eddie DiGio,

yea, Revis does that exactly that.

EXCEPT, you cant ignore you need the personnel to be able to take the opportunity that comes with Revis.

like i said, you CANT build the best house on the block with cheap wood, regardless how good the foundation is.

  14. avatar greene says:

    Eddie DiGio,

you’re talking like everyone thinks Revis isn’t the best cornerback in the league.

i think most (if not all) think Revis is. However, what you gonna do with just the best corner in the league?

  15. avatar Brendan says:

I don’t need Fatso to tell me what Revis allows the team to do. I know all about the scheme bringing pressure from one side to force a bailout throw towards Revis’ man/side. I know that Revis essentially gets funneled passes because Rex believes he is a better receiver than most WR’s. I know all this. And I still don’t think Revis carried the defense. If Cromartie had that same scheme funneling passes his way, he’s have a great year as well (or we better hope so, because it’ll happen this year). I’m not saying they’re equal in terms of talent, but Rex determines where the throw goes as often as the QB does, that’s the scheme, dictating throws with pressure.

  16. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Ok Brendan

Brendan, you said it better, he was the most important reason they were #1…

When Revis gets traded or sat down for Kyle Wilson or Cromartie, then maybe Ill see the coaches being angry…until then we’ll have to see how it plays out

    Fair enough?

  17. avatar Brendan says:

I don’t want to make it seem like I think the coaches are screaming at Revis in a dark room somewhere, but they clearly aren’t appreciative of Revis making them look bad.

Both went out and said it was a real injury, not contract-related. Then Revis said it was. I understand it was a blip on his basically spotless-record. As I said before, I don’t see this as being a divisive issue, and once Rex sits down with Darrelle, I think they will be back on the same page and this will be old news (to the team and us fans at least, the media will run with it until they can find a new topic to harp on non stop).

  18. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    greene

I hear what you are saying about Super Bowl winners having suspect 2ndary’s

But you are missing MY POINT…

Rex has said on numerous occasions that you can never have enough cover CBs. He has gone on at length about 06-07 (I think) when Balt had everyone get hurt at CB and finished 6-10 and out of the top 5 in defense.

Point being, he builds HIS defense around DBs, not pass rushers

So I dont know what you are arguing with me about, the head coach has openly stated that its the most important position

  19. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Brendan

I wish they would show LT helping out the little dude with the heart condition but they just pump this sewage so Fatso Mike can have something to talk about while he sips Diet Coke

  20. avatar greene says:

    Eddie,

im arguing with you that Revis is not gonna BREAK the team.

and why do you think we picked up Cromartie and Wilson?

they wont be able to fill Revis’ shoes but Rex Ryan has done damn alot without a cornerback like Revis.

  21. avatar Brendan says:

Sips!? That’s like saying the BP Oil rig is dripping oil into the Gulf. I think his blood plasma has been replaced by concentrated sugar and Diet Coke.

  22. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    greene

They picked them up because Peyton Manning gave the rest of the NFL elite a blueprint on how to beat the Jets…

They throw opposite Revis side and down the seams to Collie…

Sheppard could not be the guy he was in Philly, Lowery is zone corner and Drew Coleman is Drew Coleman

The teams like the Saints, Colts have 3 WR and a pass catching TE…all of which can do damage

They drafted Wilson and got Cromartie for the reasons I stated above…Rex wants as many cover CBs as he can get

  23. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    greene

    You are talking about yesterday

Brendan and I were discussing how Revis messing up at practive the other day does not make him a bad person

    Not his contract dollar amount

  24. avatar greene says:

    Eddie,

I was just responding to your,

“Darrelle already proved what kind of man he is last year when he put that defense on his back and carried it as far as it could go…”

    defense built around revis, yes.
revis carried the team on his back, definitely no.

  25. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    greene

Maybe it wont BREAK the team as they finish 2-14 BUT…

With Revis, Super Bowl caliber defense. Depth in the secondary. Long pass rushers in Pace and Taylor, solid D line. Can blitz regularly on any down and distance

Without Revis, good defense, top 10 in the NFL maybe, can’t win a Super Bowl vs Brees, Manning or Minnesota Brett (barring he returns), Lowery becomes your nickel…more predictable and less versatile in terms of blitz

  26. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    greene

When Brady went down in New England a few years ago…

The Pats didnt crumble and finish 4-12…

But EVERYONE knew they weren’t going to the Super Bowl

  27. avatar greene says:

    Eddie DiGio,

no guarantee that Tom Brady would’ve taken them to the superbowl

also, lets not compare a quarterback to a cornerback again.

also, i think Cromartie and Wilson is better depth than Matt Cassel…

and, they went 11-5, that’s easily playoff bound if the AFC wasn’t so dominant that year.

  28. avatar greene says:

and personally (my opinion), Brady is overrated. he’s definitely hall of game great, but Manning is definitely is superior.

Brady won 3 championships on teams with good run attack and great defense. him and his team won those rings.

  29. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    greene

As I said before, carrying the team on his back wasnt the best way to put it….

Revis was the most important reason the defense played the way they did

The Brady thing was an example of how an elite player can make the difference between good and super

    With Revis, Super Bowl

Without Revis, playoff team that cant stack up against the elite
