Link: An Embarrassment of Riches

Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has been faced with a problem that most people in his shoes would love to have … an embarrassment of riches at the WR spot, as Jenny Vrenthas writes in the Star-Ledger.

“We have three No. 1 receivers, as I see it,” Schottenheimer said recently. “So in the third, fourth quarter, you’ve got a guy that’s fresh, that’s maybe only played 30 plays. Whereas the corners and the guys on defense trying to stop these guys have played 65, 70 plays.”

At this time last year, the Jets had just one of those three receivers — Cotchery — and a rookie quarterback in Mark Sanchez.

A more developed passing game is an objective for this season.

One key will be the top receivers being “interchangeable,” Schottenheimer said, and able to “move all around” the field — an aim which they spent the offseason working toward, starting with new assignments.

Cotchery, who played the “Z” receiver, or flanker, last season, learned the intricacies of the slot.
Edwards, who has played the “X” receiver, or split end, for the past three seasons, was asked to master flanker. Holmes, brand-new to the offense after an April trade, has absorbed as much as he can starting with his familiar split end position.

Having fresh legs at the WR spot deep in games will be huge for the offense, and could result in some backbreaking plays should a game be a tight field position battle deep into the game.  On top of that, don’t forget about Dustin Keller, who will be a big part of the passing game, as we saw he and Sanchez coming more in synch at the end of last season.

    Irrelevant.

Dolphins fans have informed me that Sanchez is the most overrated quarterback of all time ever who wasn’t even that good last year and it doesn’t matter that we made the AFC Championship game because we shouldn’t even have been in the playoffs and Braylon sucks and Santonio will get sent to prison before he can play and Henne and Marshall will break every passing record ever and the Jest will finish 3-13 because Rex Ryan is a fatty.

    Sounds reasonable.

Joe Namath pillaged every Hooters in Florida. If Dolphins fans got paternity tests, they’d burn their tear soaked jerseys and catch the first train north!

I have to agree Dolphins fans are getting so jealous and dumb. I saw on tv today that a Dolphins fan site had a polled on the most hated person, and Rex got top billing. LOL He even beat out the two headed monster up in New England Bill and Brady.

Bassett, You said “Don’t forget Keller” LMFAO!!!! How could anyone who watched the Keller show in the playoffs last year forget him. Bengal fans remember him :)

Dustin Keller is Johny Mitchell good… He’s just not a retard like Mitchell.

For all the talk about them being interchangeable, it is clear that Holmes has been inserted at X, Edward demoted to Cotch’s Z role, and Cotch to the slot, as it should be.

Cotch is going to be Wes Welker great in that role, perhaps catching more balls than the other two combined.
