Buzz: Jets QBs rank 19th on FoxSports.com

by Angel Navedo on June 30th, 2010 at 6:04 pm

FoxSports evaluated every team’s quarterback situation and ranked them from bottom to top, squeezing the Jets in at 19 before finding a way to put Texans QB Matt Schaub behind Miami’s Chad Henne.

Face it, Mark Sanchez has “it” — the moxie, the mojo, the schutzpah = the charisma needed to not just survive the NYC fishbowl as QB, but to excel. He may have put up very rookie numbers in 2009 (12 TD, 20 INT, 2,444 yards), but he stepped up in the playoffs in leading the Jets one half from a Super Bowl. Expect improvement, but don’t overvalue him just yet. Behind him, Kellen Clemens has played at least, albeit not well, and is nothing more than a potential .500 QB.

Oh, summer, how I loathe thee. It’s arbitrary rankings time, perfect for boosting page views by throwing live bait into the offseason piranha tank. And fans bite — oh, they gon bite! — every time. And here I am, setting the table while preparing a side dish of snark and glass of disappointment.

Ranked higher than the Jets are the Seahawks, banking on Matt Hasselbeck’s back and J.P. Losman to (eventually) take the reins after No. 8 is sidelined again. Putting the Jets at 18 instead of 19 isn’t a significant jump, but it would’ve been more responsible for reasons that should go without saying.

We’re not delusional. Sanchez is not yet an elite, Top 10 quarterback. But he’s going to have a lot more help getting there than any quarterback in Seattle, Chicago, or Washington.

So what is it, FoxSports? Are the Jets QBs led by a young, charismatic star who stepped up when it mattered most? Or is there some justification to using Clemens as an excuse to lower the Jets’ rank while giving a pass to Rex Grossman behind an injury-prone Donovan McNabb and the aforementioned Losman-Hasselbeck tandem?

Beyond that, any NFL fan should take offense to Tony Romo landing ahead of Drew Brees and Philip Rivers.

These power rankings are just pathetic.

  2. avatar Jets = (Less) Misery says:

This list is just bizarre, for more reasons than I could reasonably point out.

  3. avatar Bent says:

    Ridiculous.

    That’s too high.

  4. avatar Dylan says:

I think 19th is very fair. Thats just below average. I definitely don’t have a problem with that. He still has to prove himself. That said, the rankings are BIZARRE! It seems like half the times they took backup QB’s into the equation and half the time they didn’t. Makes absolutely no sense. The idea of rankings teams quarterback depth chart is absurd. The backup QB doesn’t even play…

  5. avatar Angel Navedo says:

That’s what set me off, Dylan — the lack of consistency. If you want to rank a QB and his immediate backup in case of injury, then do it for all. Instead, this was constructed without much rhyme or reason.

I don’t disagree that Sanchez is a middle-of-the-pack QB right now. Anything higher than Top 15 would have been generous. But it’s irresponsible to do the rankings without addressing how much the receiving corp around him improved.

  6. avatar Dylan says:

    Angel Navedo,

Yeah the whole concept is really strange. I understand ranking QBs, backup QBs, wide receivers, or even passing attacks. But rankings all the QB on a team TOGETHER makes no sense. Its like ranking NFL teams and practice squads together lol. Or QB/Kicker rankings.

  7. avatar R in CT says:

    What. the. heck?

How can Sam Bradford, who has yet to take a snap in the NFL, rate ahead of David Garrard, who has taken his team to and won in the playoffs?

List is worthless. Only 30 days til training camp!

  8. avatar R in CT says:

And Romo before BOTH Manning and Brady?!!!!

I want back the 10 seconds I spent flipping through that list!!!!!

  9. avatar Max V.V. says:

They’re clearly banking on the notion that we don’t know enough about the backup QBs to challenge them. Sure, Manning’s great, but this Painter guy? Adavntage Romo!!

    WTF?

  10. avatar droseatwork says:

    Sanchez: 500 TD’s 0′ INT’s!

  11. avatar Matt says:

Jets at 19 is not the worst part of the rankings but is a bit low. Teams I think that should be below Jets are Dolphins, Seahawks, Bears and Eagles. The teams I cant figure are Indi being anything but 1 and the Steelers being in the top 10.

  12. avatar doboy8388bk says:

lol this is a joke what does this have to do with n e thing
    u can compile a list based on n e thing i see
how bout they make a list on who has the deepest unit of kicker ( place kickers and punters).

  13. avatar k.c. says:

Im gonna say it now…….SANCHEZ WILL BE A TOP 10 Quarterback THIS year. And for the record,I want Kellen to be our backup rather than Brunell…….anyday.

  14. avatar Bill says:

I feel like they took the madden scores of each quarterback, took an average, and then listed them based on the madden averages with a short blurb trying to justify it.

  15. avatar Brendan says:

Hah I mean, Sanchez had one of the 5 worst seasons by a QB last year, so Bent is probably right when he says the ranking is too high. The optimistic fan would point out that the majority of his turnovers happened in only 3 or 4 games. If he cuts down on those implosion games then he should have a great season.

  16. avatar Bent says:

Right. If he performed as well as the 19th best last year, they’d have won the division easily.

If he does that well this year then the sky’s the limit.

  17. avatar NamVetJet says:

    List is just silly.

  18. avatar jojotownsellout says:

    “schutzpah?”
is that a Schottenheimer and Chutzpah combo?

  19. avatar Wolf says:

Matt Schuab way too low. Reminds me of Pennington, but he’s packing a cannon of an arm.

  20. avatar deuce4417 says:

how come the broncos are not 1? they have tebow!!!!

    kidding kidding
