Roster Countdown: #89 Jerricho Cotchery

by Bassett on July 12th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Position:
Wide Receiver
Height / Weight: 6’0” 203 lbs.
Age: 28 / Experience: 7
College: North Carolina State

Analysis: Cotchery’s stats suffered at the hands of a run-heavy offense and a young QB, but he still totaled 824 yards and 57 receptions in a down year.    Cotchery only had one 100+ yard game in ‘09 – a game against the Titans in which his 6 yard catch put the Jets ahead of the Titans for the eventual win. Cotchery also missed two (three if you count the Dolphins game he barely played in) games in the 2009-10 campaign the October 18th Bills game, then the Oct. 25th game in Oakland.   While having Cotchery might not have mattered against the hapless Raiders, his presence on the field was sorely missed in the 5 INT implosion that we witnessed during the Bills and maybe to a lesser degree against the Dolphins.

While Cotchery’s numbers weren’t stellar in 2009, his play was still fairly efficient, mostly because he’s a reliable target, knowledge of the offense, runs excellent routes and his play to the whistle style.

2010 Projection: At this time last year, Cotch was the most talented receiver on the roster by a margin, now just one year later he is sharing reps with a former Pro-Bowler and a Super Bowl MVP, but it doesn’t mean he’s not going to have a solid statistical season.  Cotchery is the better complement to either Holmes OR Edwards, and with Holmes’s four game suspension, Cotchery could see the most snaps of all three of those players by the time the season is over.  With more attention on the pass in 2010, expect Cotchery’s numbers to tick upwards in 2010.

Cotch Rocket is on of my top 3 or 4 Jets, possibly ever. If you don’t love this guy, you simply don’t have the same mindset that these have Jets.

  3. avatar JesusRevis says:

Still one of the more underrated, undervalued NY sports figures. Always gives 100% and is always reliable. Lucky to have this guy.

  4. avatar ramble914 says:

The guy might have the best hands in football. He never drops a pass.

  5. avatar tish says:

“Reliable” is the only word one needs to use to describe his performance

  6. avatar C Low says:

Who? Is this Jericho Catchery guy any good?

  7. avatar C Low says:

Can anyone remember JCo ever dropping a pass? Or going down easy on a tackle?

    ……………………….I can’t

Favorite player on the team. I’ve always felt he deserves to have more passes come his way. Cotchery is an animal. Hopefully they do pass him the ball more often this season, though they probably won’t. He’s a great team player, he never complains despite not getting the respect he deserves… gotta love this guy.

I want to see the Yard After Catch stats. He drags defenders and always is falling forward. This guy is a diamond in the rough

  10. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

I LOVE Cotch…the dude is AWESOME!!

  11. avatar Bent says:

Root – 5.5 yac per catch. 21st in the league, which for a possession receiver is pretty good going. Braylon Edwards was 34th in the league.

As for dropped passes, he apparently dropped 2 this year (one in NE and one in TB) and two in 2008 (one in the rain against Denver) and one in the final game against Miami).

I agree “reliable” says it all, but maybe it doesn’t do him justice.

I like Jericho a lot, but let’s not forget that he almost single-handedly lost the OT game against the Skins in 2007. Even Superman forgets his cape once in awhile.

Cotchery is awesome. If we win it all this year, he will have plenty to do with it. He is our No. 1 WR, no question about it.

  14. avatar jim says:

jco is the man…..one of my favorite jets, clutch, solid and dependable

  15. avatar Bent says:

Off topic – Simi Toeaina was waived. Manish Mehta suggests this is to make room for Brunell, but he can’t be signed for another 11 days, so I wonder if Kyle Wilson is about to be inked.

At least you made the roster countdown, Simi!

  16. avatar Chris says:

I wear Cotch’s jersey with pride. He’s the best- never lets us down, catches everything, classy, and makes the most out of every play

I wonder how many players have been on the thejetsblog.com… Basset any of the Jets Players follow you on twitter?

  22. avatar JFan73 says:

This guy Sinkoff has absolutely blasted Cotchery in the past for having BAD hands! I thought I heard him wrong since that couldn’t be further from the truth, but he really believes it. He even hung up on me when I called in to defend J-Co! Amazing.

Man o Man, people can get all buzzed up about Holmes, Edwards and Keller and they are all exceptional but nobody compares to JCo, noooobaahhhdddeeee!!!!!! Just think back to those phenomenal catches against NE, not touching the ground, jumping up and running. What more can you ask???? Nada, man, nada, he does it all.
