David Clowney talks to the Star-Ledger about his offseason, his upcoming trip to Ghana, and how he’s looking to be part of the Jets this year.
When you come back, you will shift gears into training camp. What are your personal goals this year on the football field?
Just to be a key player offensively and on special teams, all the way around. Doing whatever I can to help my team win. I know Santonio (Holmes) is not going to be here for the first couple weeks of the season and I’m just going to have to step up; take a much bigger role when he’s gone, even when he’s coming back. Whenever I’m on the field, whenever I’m in the game, I have to make the best of it and just play my role and make plays.
Like many of you have said, this is a big year for Clowney. Specials is key, and like it or not, it’s how he’ll stay activated for gamedays this year. While I’m sure he’s excited his friend Santonio Holmes is on the team, it also spells less offensive time for him. The good news, the third or fourth year is where most project receivers (if they are legit) really come out of their shell. Could we be seeing that from DC this year? I hope so.

I gave up on Clowney when he couldn’t get a job in 2008 with no fast WR on the team and Brett F chucking the ball down field.
His lack of production is the reason Santonio and Braylon are here. If he could grab 3-4 per game, he’d be the #2WR – with JCo as #1WR and probably Stuckey (since no Braylon trade) in the slot. That would open up some $$ for the ‘core 4′.
Charitable work aside, he needs to run better routs and catch the ball when it is thrown his way.

I don’t think many people ever pegged Clowney for a number 2 receiver. That doesn’t mean he should be given up on.
He made a few plays last year without many opportunities. He’s fine as a #4 WR, which thankfully is all he needs to be on this team.

This is a huge camp and year for Clowney. With Holmes out the first 4 games he will get time at WR and the Jets will need him to step up. Whenver given the chance he seems to always make a catch.

other than speed, which he’ll start to lose a step when he starts pushing 30, has he really shown any other skill sets?
-
Clowney may be the precamp favorite for the # 5 receiver (also be #1 fill in when Holmes is out), but unless he shows a great deal, Allison will beat him out with his good hands, ability to get open and similar speed

the Clown is only 25…lets not act as though he is over the hill
i think that unless he shows something significant during weeks 1-4 he has to go. he hasnt been handed the best deck of cards in his jets career (multiple QBs and coaches, injuries, etc), but he needs to start producing. for a ground-and-pound team, the receiver position is becoming very crowded with holmes in the mix. a guy like Allison might be able to contribute to specials. henry might be a good red zone guy. the Clown is a speed guy and thats about it. he needs to show that he can bring something more to the table

If there’s anything we know about Clowney, it’s that he’ll be great in preseason. If there were a preseason Hall of Fame, he’d be a shoe-in

He played well against Miami & then disappeared. How much of this is because he gets lost in he shuffle behind Braylon, Jecho & Keller? I’m just saying I’m not convince he’s a bad WR.
I also want to say his charitable stuff looks like a positive locker-room influence. It’s already pushing bad-boy Holmes in the right direction. Is that meaningless?

I think Brad Smith will probably not be a true wide receiver anymore – his role has morphed into special teams demon, Wildcat specialist and probably #3 QB. This will Clowney a shot to be active most of the season.

Wow We…how do you guys all know so much about what the clown can and can not do? From the pre season or from the handful of plays he made in the season? What specifically did you see to form this judgement of his ability…cause I for one missed whatever it is you saw.
I saw this guy make some plays…speed and pretty good hands.
Shotty doesn’t use him much…not enough for this clear understanding and assessment of his ability you all seem to have…based on what?

I can understand people questioning his route running, but there’s really no reason to question his hands. I can remember him dropping ONE pass as a Jet.
If he can get the route running down he’ll be a threat. That said, I doubt he see’s the field much this year unless his route running has improved dramatically.

SI has a good article about Clowney/Santonio & Ghana. Clowney is motivating me to get more involved with charities. What a wonderful human being he is.
