With training camp quickly approaching, Manish Mehta is reporting that it looks like the Jets are going to be bringing back a familiar face some time in the near future…

i think this is a good move, he played well for us last year + it’s another body to rotate on the D line. is this an indication of how gholston is playing his new position i wonder?

  2. avatar endzoneview says:

    why not

  3. avatar brian311 says:

or maybe they are not as high on Kroll, Potty or one of the other lower depth chart guys

  4. avatar Bent says:

eric – not likely, Gholston has been backing up Ellis on the other side.

Signing him doesn’t guarantee his place on the team, but provides a smart fallback in case someone gets hurt or fails to step up. I don’t think they necessarily need him, but if he is available and provides even the smallest of upgrades and a positive locker room influence, then I’m all for it.

    Love this signing!

  8. avatar Ed says:

He played like one of the best D-Lineman in the game last year…

    Happy we have him!

    Oh, wth, bring him back

  10. avatar Dylan says:

I definitely want to see Douglas back with the Jets. He was solid last year. By the way did anyone see Jenkins shot at an anonymous Jet aka Kerry Rhodes (I think)?

This is very good bringing Douglas back, he did a great job last year.

He did stand over top of Tomlinson and say: “You got nothing left LT we took you heart” in the playoffs. That right there is worth another year. Welcome back.

  12. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

This is a great move, and I hope he stayed in shape!

  13. avatar Brendan says:

Hopefully he comes in and calms some people who fear about the defensive line’s depth.

  14. avatar jetsfanferraro says:

i bet hes going to be cheap too!!!

  15. avatar Green Lantern says:

What quote was Kris Jenkins replying to?

  16. avatar Badger says:

I hope this happens for us. I’m very surprised he wasn’t signed by some team already.

  17. avatar Bent says:

GL – He was “asked about replacing the void left by some veterans during an interview on the NFL Network Tuesday night.” according to that link.

Note – it also said he’s lost 25 pounds and intends to lose 10 more.

  18. avatar tish says:

Douglas is a can’t lose acquisition. He can share the DE spot with Devito; he can fill in by backing up every line position except NT; he brings a different swagger and knowledge to the game and the criticism about his age is bogus if he plays 20 snaps.I heard Pat Williams on Sirius and he is 37 years old and around 700 lbs. He and Damien Woody had a great old time (although Woody needs to go to broadcasting school) and if Williams can do it (albeit at a different position) then so can Douglas.
Thank you Bent for noting that Gholston is a backup for Ellis and apparently not a starter, thus beginning is descent into the world of former Jet.

  19. avatar Pdubbs says:

Douglas is solid and having him around can’t hurt.

How could scouts be so wrong about Gholston ??? That guy should be on the Raiders.

  20. avatar Bent says:

I think Gholston begun his descent a long time ago. However, he has one more chance to contribute to the rotation this year. His only chance of staying on the team after this year is if he proves to be an adequate replacement for Ellis, which is a longshot, but they have nothing to lose and if he can spell Ellis effectively from time to time, that can only be a good thing in the long run.

For the third straight year there were some positive reports about him in preseason workouts. The difference this time is that they can afford to give him plenty of playing time once the season starts because he no longer has a playing time incentive.

  21. avatar Greeengoblin says:

    What about Adalius Thomas?

  22. avatar Brendan says:

Expensive and no room for him.

  23. avatar Bent says:

Getting cheaper by the day though. I guess he’ll end up somewhere like Detroit.

I still think he’s an upgrade over anyone they have at backup ILB, but the fact they haven’t signed him suggests the Jets are perhaps satisfied with their depth there. I wonder if the Douglas signing signifies they are not satisfied with their depth on the DL, but I figure it’s just a fail-save move with no downside.

  24. avatar Harvlis says:

I hope Tannenbaum reads this post. We all think Douglas would be a nice addition to our D-Line rotation. Lock this guy up, Mike.

  25. avatar belvey631 says:

Correct me if I’m wrong but the situation with Douglas is that he’s a free agent and they didnt resign him to see if he got signed somewhere else so we could pick up another free agent. He’s one of Rex’ guys, so it will be good to get him back in action.

  26. avatar Bent says:

Belvey – yes, that and the possibility of compensatory picks is probably the reason they’ve waited until after 7/22.
