Revis Wants to Retire As A Jet

by Bassett on July 22nd, 2010 at 8:45 am

Darrelle Revis was on an NFLPA chat last night with fans, and when asked about staying a Jet for life he answered as follows:

Section114row10: Is your goal to retire as a Jet? I mean many many many years from now. lol

Revis Island: Haha, that’s always been my goal. When they drafted me, I told them this is one of the biggest things they did, and I won’t let them down. From the business side, they make the choices. They know my heart is with the Jets and the New York/New Jersey area. I’m here as long as I can be. If they give me the ability to have a choice, I’ll stay here as a Jet.

Darrelle Revis wants to play for the Jets for the rest of his career, he just wants to be paid commensurate with his abilities.  I hope that Revis does retire a Jet, and I hope the contract thing can be put behind us quickly… but it looks like right now both sides are at an impasse.

Careful Bassett. God forbid you insert any opinion in your commentary.

    Revis in today’s News:

“If they give me the ability to have a choice, I’ll stay here as a Jet”.

Ummmm, they ARE giving you a “choice”, you have declined. Sign the deal and insure you contract for injury.

“When they drafted me, I told them this is one of the biggest things they did, and I won’t let them down,” Revis said. “From the business side, they make the choices”

ummm, no Darelle, from the business side BOTH sides make choices. Yours was to hire a very tough agent and declare you want to be the highest paid CB in the league, even though both you and your agent know that Aso’ deal is an aberattion, apples and oranges, from you situation.

He is starting to piss me off.

PS – they OVERPAID you on your original deal.

All I need to know is that rookies report to training camp one week from today, then we can start talking about actual football instead of mulling over this crap.
25 days to the first game in our New Stadium vs. VaGiants!

  4. avatar BKWRXWgn says:

If he really wants to stay a Jet till he retires then take a hometown discount and show your leadership abilities. He might deserve a better contract than his current, but come on what’s more important at the moment? Does complaining about a contract that still has 3 years sets precedence over the upcoming season with a potential to make a SB run? I wonder what’s the locker room opinion on him at the moment with all this media about Revis and his contract dispute. It’s one thing if it’s the last year on his contract, I think players would side with him, but they might be looking at him as being somewhat selfish right now. But I could be wrong on that.

  5. avatar Joe B. says:

No offense Bassett, but they all say that. It’s a PR move. Revis will go where the money is, and if someone else is dumb enough to pony up the $15 million a year he wants (or wanted), he’ll want to retire a Redskin.

  6. avatar bilal says:

Seriously has an athlete ever answered this questions like this “No- I never really wanted to finish my career with the team that drafted me. I plan on moving else for the prime of my career. Then when my career is coming to an end I’ll strictly look for a superbowl contender and take a major pay cut”

  7. avatar billvv says:

I think the real question is will the inmates begin running the asylum?

  8. avatar bilal says:

What does that mean? You do realize that the players in the NFL have the least amount of power than any other sport?

  9. avatar Pdubbs says:

    I agree with Billvv

You can’t honestly feel bad for these players.

Some are even getting paid in college !!

  10. avatar Bent says:

I note that Kris Jenkins said that players will support Revis and Mangold if they decide to hold out…which is interesting, because if they cave to unrealistic demands, Jenkins is one of the first guys I think that will be a cap casualty in 2011.

  11. avatar Brendan says:

I think bill meant that if you cave to Revis, then other players will take note and eventually you’ll have players holding out for ridiculous demands because they think the front office will cave.

    _______________

Revis needs to suck it up and realize that Aso played for six seasons before he got a new deal. You don’t just demand a deal of this magnitude when you have no leverage (aside from sitting out, which would be idiotic on his part). He should realize that a deal averaging $13-14 million would still make him the highest paid DB in history in terms of total compensation (no one gets a deal this large this early).

Essentially…what’s more important? His personal glory as being the “highest paid blah blah” or the glory he’d experience winning a Superbowl? If he keeps being ridiculous in his demands neither will happen.

  12. avatar billvv says:

I am also referring to round ball where players are now listing teams they want to be traded to, where they have friends, ala the Heat.

  13. avatar Pdubbs says:

Exactly … these guys get everything they want all the time. So, they never stop asking.

    Just greedy is all….

  14. avatar hanknaples says:

    Bent:

Most of these comments honestly make me chuckle :-)

Like ” Give this BILLIONAIRE owner a hometown discount”—–Yeah, Just like Farve did, just like Feneca did……..and a few others.

Like “…no Darelle, from the business side BOTH sides make choices. Yours was to hire a very tough agent and declare you want to be the highest paid CB in the league,”—— Implying that now hiring tough agents is a bad thing?

Like ” …You don’t just demand a deal of this magnitude when you have no leverage (aside from sitting out, which would be idiotic on his part).”—beside all tthe accolades showered on Revis by experts in addition to ‘The BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN ALL OF SPORTS’ is not enough leverage?

There are soo many rediculous arguments I wont waste everyones time. People MUST understand this is NOT a Socialist country….YET. Thank GOD the market forces still dictate value.

On a side not Bent. Your comment on Jenkins is spot on !!! And it proves what I have been saying: That your comment is ONE of Many that proves why Tannenbaum made a HUGE mistake by oppeneing Pandoras box first instead of dealing with the more timely pressing smaller issues. These smaller issues will grown exponentially as Revis situation develops

You know this is a “Show and Tell” league !!!

  15. avatar hanknaples says:

    Hey Pdubbs:

” Exactly … these guys get everything they want all the time. So, they never stop asking.

    Just greedy is all….”

Tell that to L. Washington . And other players that are broke and can’t even walk normally or a day without pain !!!!

  16. avatar Brendan says:

    hank,

Um…Leon is at least as responsible as the Jets for him not getting a new deal in NY, if not more.

  17. avatar billvv says:

Leon turned down the offer, preferring to go into the market place where he believed he would find greater value. Nothing wrong with that. But you have to live with your choices, that’s all. I don’t hear him complaining, to his credit.

  18. avatar hanknaples says:

    Brendan:

Really? Like turning down that “famed” $5+ Million contract?

  19. avatar Jetsfan29 says:

Another revis thread, I’m sick of this dude already, how convenient is it that he held out to get a rookie deal and is half way through it and is threatening holding out again? In my opinion the best thing the jets can do is make him play out his contract, If he holds out it’s not an accrued season and we keep him and again he makes the same amount right bent? So what do we lose by him holding-out except darelle revis? Not a damn thing slide cromartie into his role Wilson acrossed from him and let lowery take the slot, not ideal but better then paying his ransom and watching the rest of the team want top dollar at their positions! This dude says the right things to cover his arse! If you want to retire a jet take the 11-13 mil contract and move on! Quit acting like you deserve 16mil a yr cause you don’t, and for that matter we could sign a decent kicker and backup qb and dine depth for what it would cost for one revis, sorry revis but your no Deion sanders, in my eyes the best in the biz is champ
bailey! And if he wants to be paid like the best, sign the contract he was offered because I do believe champ makes less

  20. avatar deuce4417 says:

leon, but more so his agent are the ones to blame with that one.

lets not forget your getting payed to play a game!!!!! for god sakes whats the min now in the NFL!? how could anyone actually have a legit contract gripe. the only player that is ledgit WAY WAY underpaid is chris johnson.

  21. avatar Brendan says:

    Hank,

No. By wanting to be paid more than the guy starting in front of him.

  22. avatar hanknaples says:

    JetsFan:

I may be wrong but….A contract is always time sensitive. Once it expires is void. Only thing pending is whether both parties successfully executed its conditions.

  23. avatar tish says:

I would like to hear a player, not Revis, respond to one of these bogus Q&A sessions with a simple response along the lines of: “I play for the team that is the highest bidder. Basically I am a mercenery, care as much for the fans as they care for me when I’m playing lousy” Honestly, how many fans have the same attitude about their job? As a fan, it is very difficult to be objective when all you are really interested in is having your team win.

  24. avatar bilal says:

    jetsfan29-

Why do you think Champ is the best in the business? Not saying that I watch many broncos games but I would rate Revis, Aso and Leon Hall over him. Champ may be the most athletically gifted, especially when he was younger, but i dont think hes the best.

  25. avatar hanknaples says:

    Brendan:

Your hangover the other day must have been from drinking too much koolaide.

  26. avatar hanknaples says:

    Hey brendan:

Side note: Can you guys see my comments @ 11:33 ?

    It says “awaiting moderation”.

  27. avatar bilal says:

I do agree that Revis is no Deion- he actually takes pride in tackling!

  28. avatar Brendan says:

    Hank,

1st question: What do you mean? Leon wanted to get paid more than TJ, so that has nothing to do with my hangover (which was whiskey induced, with a side of kool aid).

2nd question: No, I can’t. Looks like sPam is acting up again.

  29. avatar bilal says:

    tish-

i agree. thats why i never make the argument “these guys get paid so much- look at me- i have to work hard for my 60k a year job”

  30. avatar Jeezy Hamilton says:

after seeing Chris Johnson get a contract rework, why wouldn’t Revis just take the contract that the Jets are able to do right now and then in the future rework the deal that fits both sides? i mean isn’t the CBA holding the Jets back because they don’t know the consequences or how much they can actually spend?

  31. avatar Jeff says:

You know who deserves a better contract, Andre Johnson.

This guy was a top-3 pick, signed a deal. He never had an actual agent. He signed an extension making him tied down for 6yrs at below market value. He is the best receiver in the game, yet look at how he handles himself?

Hey Revis, if you want to earn respect from your teammates and fans, take a lesson from Andre Johnson. The “beast” as you so call him, and shut up and play the game. Things will work itself out, doesn’t help your “brand” if you appear as a money grubbing jerk every time you talk.

Don’t talk about Nmandi’s contract its an aberration. The other top-3 corners make between 9–10 million a season. Remember Al Davis gave him that contract. The same Al Davis that guaranteed 30+ million to J-Mac. The one who gave Tommy Kelly a 40+ million contract, the one that gave Javon Walker a 50+ million contract after 3 knee surgeries, yes, that Al Davis!!!!

  32. avatar miketaliaferro says:

Another way to look at this:

(Forgetting his current contract, and ONLY thinking of his performance and impact on the game, and his elite-level visibility and value, league-wide:) Think what the Jets (or any other NFL team) would pay, TODAY, to bring Revis to town if he were an UFA at this moment of his career. While that eye-popping number is certainly out of reach for him simply because of his current status, it does give us and the F.O. an insight into just where Derrelle’s real value stands. The task for Tanny is to factor in that Revis is competitive enough to improve his skills and production post-payday and not backslide like Hollywood did, determine what obscene amount it would take to sign DR down the road, and figure out what he can lock Revis down for now. All of this with the burden and onus of the owners’ current collusion hanging over everyone’s head.

We’ve seen on the field that Revis may well be THE singular MOST competitive guy in the NFL. Tanny would seriously underestimate DR if he thinks for a second that DR is not looking at this as another competition and looking at him as just another opponent to turn into bad-stat roadkill. From every piece on him I’ve read since he was drafted, Derrelle strikes me as EXACTLY the type of player who would sit out a year over a principle until he won. Which he would, eventually. The warm, huge smile and the easy laugh and affability barely hides the heart of an assassin, which we see on the field every week, and which is now trained on Mike Tannenbaum. Or, should we now call him, TochoCinco?

  33. avatar hanknaples says:

    Brendan:

“1st question: What do you mean? Leon wanted to get paid more than TJ, so that has nothing to do with my hangover (which was whiskey induced, with a side of kool aid).”

You mean more than ” $1 (one) Million/yr.?—Silly Leon, the gaul of him !!!! and BTW, wiskey w/koolaide aside must’ve really tasted good !!

And thanks for ans. #2 I’ll wait for some one to review it.

  34. avatar Bent says:

Hank – we can all see your 11:33 comment now.

JF29 – no, you’ve misinterpreted the accrued season rule. If Revis sits out the season, he still moves a year closer to the end of his contract (and the 2011 money), but he doesn’t move a year closer to unrestricted free agency. However, at the end of his six year deal, if he has five accrued seasons, he’d still be an unrestricted free agent anyway, so this is a complete red herring. The difference between 3 and 4 or 4 and 5 accrued years might matter, but the difference between 5 and 6 won’t.

In any case, this applies if he doesn’t report by August 11th, not just if he sits the whole season.

  35. avatar Brendan says:

    Ok Hank,

You know I meant in terms of average salary. Yes, at the time of Leon’s talks the TJ was in reality only earning $1,000,000, but his yearly averages of a little over $4,000,000 is the number I am referring to.

And yes, the whiskey/kool aid is a delicious cocktail of death.

  36. avatar hanknaples says:

    Bent;

Re said comment, what do you think:

‘ Your comment on Jenkins is spot on !!! And it proves what I have been saying: That your comment is ONE of Many that proves why Tannenbaum made a HUGE mistake by oppeneing Pandoras box first instead of dealing with the more timely pressing smaller issues. These smaller issues will grown exponentially as Revis situation develops’

The NFL IS a “copy cat” league.

  37. avatar Bent says:

Hank – I guess I’m just glad Jenkins sees team unity as more important than his own situation (based on that comment).

I still don’t think it makes a blind bit of difference who opened talks, but teams had a different interpretation of the rules when they first approached him. Bottom line, with a $1m salary this year, there were always going to be negotiations.

What smaller issues are you talking about? If it’s Mangold and Harris’ contract then there are serious obstacles to overcome, so they’d be struggling to complete there too. Why have three tough contract negotiations on the go at once, especially when leaving the smaller deals until later lets you know exactly what you’re working with? Approaching Revis didn’t stand in the way of Brick’s deal, so I don’t see how it prevents them dealing with anything else. The fact they haven’t done anything with Mangold and Harris, suggests that the 30% rule means they’ve decided it is better to wait.

  38. avatar SackDance99 says:

Revis wants to shatter the pay scale for CBs by using Al Davis’ insane contract for Aso. I doubt that any owner in his right mind (which excludes Davis and Snyder) would give Revis a 5 or 6 year deal for $15M per year. Once Brady and Peyton sign their deals and the Bradford deal is done, the going rate for QB will be around $20M. So, a prototype team has to sink $35M for a franchise CB and QB? A team has a 53 man roster, of which 45 (or 46 for a 3rd QB) dress. The 2009 salary cap was $127M. Take out $35M and that leaves $92M for 51 other players. I assume the salary cap will rise, but to maintain a competitive team it is somewhat necessary for your stars to take a bit of a hometown discount. If not, it just is too hard to build a championship level team.

  39. avatar OtisMyMan says:

    Hank:

Like ” Give this BILLIONAIRE owner a hometown discount”—–Yeah, Just like Farve did, just like Feneca did……..and a few others.

-Do you actually think that if Revis signs for 12 million instead of 16, Woody is just going to pocket that 4 million every year? The owner doesn’t get the discount, because he will most likely be paying up to the cap regardless. The people who benefit from a hometown discount are the other players on the team because there’s more cap space to work with for them (and to a lesser extent, the fans, who get to watch a better team).

Like “…no Darelle, from the business side BOTH sides make choices. Yours was to hire a very tough agent and declare you want to be the highest paid CB in the league,”—— Implying that now hiring tough agents is a bad thing?

    - I don’t think anyone was implying that hiring tough agents is necessarily a bad thing. All they were saying is you can’t play hardball and then act like the resulting impasse is entirely the other party’s fault. It takes two sides to negotiate a deal.

-Regardless of how great he is or how effusive the praise he receives from experts is, neither is very good leverage against a contractual obligation. No one held a gun to Revis’s head and made him sign his contract. The fact that ownership is trying rework his deal and give him more money when they could easily force him to play it out should tell you a little bit about which side is being more reasonable in negotiations.

You also made a comment about socialism which literally has nothing to do with contractual negotiations, so please explain.

  40. avatar deuce4417 says:

just a question here, after aso’s stupid deal who has the next highest salary at cb? is it dunta?

  41. avatar Bent says:

Deuce – contract values can be quantified in several different ways, but I can tell you nobody else gets 10m a year. There’s a few guys close to that though. As an example, Nate Clements got an 8 year, 80m deal, but really it’s a 7/64 deal because he isn’t likely to get the 16m in the last year.

  42. avatar Michael says:

Any one here anything about Mangold ? They need to sign both of them if they are serious about wining a trip to the SuperBowl. I am getting tired of waiting. It has been 41 years since their last Super Bowl.
    Get it done !!!

  43. avatar Bent says:

It’s looking increasingly like Mangold is likely to have to wait. The 30% rule limits the total salary they can pay him to about 10m in a six year deal. That means the other 40m or so would either have to be an upfront signing bonus (which the team won’t want) or incentives (which neither of them wants), unless they find a creative solution (which IMO is practically impossible).

Makes sense for both parties to do the deal after the season. They can franchise him if they don’t agree a deal, but he has said he doesn’t want that, which means hopefully he’ll be keen to get something done. The negotiations shouldn’t be as difficult because there’s little difference between his market value and the top paid center and interior linemen (each of which were signed recently).

Harris is pretty much in the same boat, but he seems to understand the issues, whereas Mangold is still talking about possible holdouts.

  44. avatar WOJF says:

    Thanks Otis -

“I don’t think anyone was implying that hiring tough agents is necessarily a bad thing. All they were saying is you can’t play hardball and then act like the resulting impasse is entirely the other party’s fault. It takes two sides to negotiate a deal.”

correct, exactly my point, DR created this stale mate, not the Jets.

They are doing him a FAVOR by agreeing to renegotiate early, so there needs to be benefit to the team for this contract to get done. If they are going to pay the biggest contract of all freaking time, why not just ride this one out.

    He will not hold out.
