Bent is out for a saucy night of bumpaddling or whatever Brits do for fun on a Friday night, but before he did, he worked with THE MAN Jason over at NYJetsCap.com and figured out some of the finer details of the deal that we thought it important to point out on how Dumervil’s contract might indeed provide some insight and distinction from the Darrelle Revis contract situation. I did pass it by my guys at Wu-Tang Financial, just to be sure, but Bent might update the sitch in the morning.
This seems to be good news for the Jets as there is one very important distinction between the Revis and Dumervil situations:
Dumervil is a free agent so they didn’t have to comply with the 30% rules OR the re-allocation rules.
So, it is not as easy as “Dumervil got paid, why can’t Revis” because the Revis deal is very restricted in how it can be structured. That’s good news for the Jets because it shouldn’t increase the pressure on them.
The problem though, is The Assclown That Shall Not Be Named doesn’t care to really know the details of the situation, so while the media might blindly follow him and excoriate the team, the team and the agents should have an understanding of what can and what cannot be done at this point. Despite this, Dumervil’s deal contained…drumroll…NO UPFRONT MONEY.
This strengthens the Jets bargaining position because it proves that the team isn’t blowing smoke when they say they don’t like the risk of paying a huge upfront guarantee before a potential lockout.
The sums included in the first four years of Dumervil’s deal ARE fully guaranteed, unlike the Brick deal, where they could ONLY be skill or injury and not both, but the Broncos can still get out of paying them at certain points, although this will still give them a big cap hit, so they are dissuaded from doing so. The Broncos actually have get-out clause after the first year of a sort, just like with the Brick deal, which is what Mike Florio was bashing the Jets for when it came to the Tackle’s deal with the Jets.
So, the Brick deal was pretty similar to Dumervil’s, albeit limited in terms of what could be guaranteed (by rule). Again this helps the Jets’ efforts to broker a similarly structured deal for Revis.
Finally, it’s interesting to note that the first year of the new deal is exactly equivalent to the value of his RFA tender and then raises to higher amounts later on. This is exactly what the Jets seem to have offered Leon Washington and again got bashed for. So, the fact a high profile player signed such a deal again might help their reputation.

Number one reason I read this site: Bassett is as big an AD fan as me.

Love the arrested development reference! keep them coming.

I really am tired of people comparing the Revis situation to people that have absolutely nothing to do with him. Dumervil, Brick, etc., he is a completely unique situation.

I’m not sure I’d say some people are. It seems to me to be more 1 person, who has inexplicably become respected in the media to the point that everyone else has blindly followed suit.
Which, BTW, I honestly don’t understand

Bassett, Too funny on the Chapelle Show. I guess for Revis its’ “Green, Get the money. Dolla Dolla bill Y’all.”

ahahaha nice AD reference.
