In 1999, the last time the Jets were coming off an AFC Championship loss, I was much more confident they’d win a Superbowl than I am now.
That may have been the best Jets team since ’69. It was so good, Ray Lucas went 6-2 with them down the stretch. Unfortunately, no team could make Rick “Can’t Throw To His Left” Meier look good.
I’m not as confident this year as I was then. I don’t think the ’10 Jets are as good as the ’99 Jets. Back then, my confidence was shattered in Week One. This team doesn’t have as much dependency on one player. Maybe things will work out better now….

You were really more confident in the 1999 Jets?
I mean, going into the season (so still counting Vinny), the ’99 Jets had clear advantages at QB, RB and head coach (Vinny, Curtis & Parcells), but I don’t see anywhere that the ’99 team has any clear advantage (if the advantage at all). I think your point about not depending too much on one player is one of the biggest reason I feel more confident this year than in ’99.
This defense is going to be scary. They were #1 last year, without a pass rush and with the team not all on the same page, and with crippling injuries. Not to say they won’t get hurt again, but with the added talent it’s possible this defense is good on a historical level.
The ’98 team was very balanced, which I think will also be a huge strength to the 2010 team. But I am definitely more confident now, mostly because of the mentality of the team, the defense, and the fact that Rex painted a Kris Jenkins-sized bulls-eye on the team and they took everyone’s best punch and kept coming.
Also, I watched about 10-15 minutes of Hard Knocks promo’s on HBO On Demand last night and I almost ran through my living room wall. Camp needs to start. Now.

That should read
“but I don’t see anywhere ELSE that the ’99 team has any clear advantage (if they have an advantage at all)”

“David Harris, Jets (3-4 ILB). He can play capable coverage between the numbers but lacks extended range and the ability to close when plays are away from him.”
Oh.
So aside from hitting like an anvil, destroying anyone who decides to carry a football through the box, being a sure tackler, being very underrated at coverage and rushing the passer…
He can’t close, but runs a 40 time faster than almost every single person that is ranked. Interesting.
Utterly ridiculous that the guy finishes top 10 in tackles in his two full seasons, while combining for 10.5 sacks (playing 3-4 ILB, not a pass rushing position) and four FF’s in those two years. But he’s not top 20. Ok.

not to mention what he did in place of vilma his rookie deal! back to back around 20 tackle games, dude is a monster
-
Suggs – 59 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 1 FF
Mayo – 103 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 FF
Briggs – 118 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1 INT
Tatupa – 94 tackles, 1 INT, 1 FF (2008 stats, hurt all but 3 games in 2009)
Barnett – 104 tackles, 4 sacks
Harris – 127 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 2 INT’s, 2 FF’s.
Harris had better numbers than the #1 LB on this list, Lil’ Ray Ray.

Brendan: The ’99 team faced a weaker division and the team it lost to in the Championship was dismantled due to retirement and free agency. So, yes, I was much more confident in ’99. The ’10 Jets might win the division, but there’s no way they come out of the East with home field advantage.

Regarding the sportingnews.com LB rankings, the Jets have 3 LBs in the top 25 (counting the “Five who didn’t quite make the cut”). Pace, Scott and Harris. Not bad. No other team can boast that much talent among their LBs.
Next to anticipating the Jets winning a lot of games this season and going far in the postseason, I’m looking forward to watching a really fun team on the field, on both sides of the line.

Any Jets fan who has been breathing more than 5 minutes knows there is no such thing as a “lock.” That is just plain silly.
And yes, 1999 is the perfect example. I still remember the hoopla in the parking lot and the stands for the start of the first game. And the absolute silence when Vinny went down mid-way through the first quarter. Season over.
The NFL, more than any other major league sport, is a crapshoot. With the amount of parity and the devastating effect of the big injury, anything is possible. I can see the Jets winning 12 games or 8.

“Are the Jets a lock to win the AFC East?”
No.
As for AD, they did say there was a “minimal” chance…
