    What a dumb move!!!

  2. Does he have 2 years of walking left?? LOL

  3. avatar neauone says:

Can a “cut” be far behind?

  4. avatar Brendan says:

One question: how much is guaranteed?

If anyone reads this news and doesn’t make the same face they’d make if Rex dropped a rancid fart right next to them, then I want some of that Kool Aid.

    • avatar Joe B. says:

My guess is not much, and they’re bringing him in mainly as a mentor to Sanchez. In that vein, I like the move, because I’d rather have Brunell in his ear than Clemens. We’re in trouble if Sanchez goes down no matter what, so I don’t get how everybody can get all up in arms about this.

      • I understand that Brunell has big-time financial woes. Like, really big. So, maybe he’s working out 16 hours a day.

Without knowing what kind of physical shape he’s in, I have to question whether he can even last a set of downs.

  5. avatar endzoneview says:

The Jets have done everything right except skimp on the two areas that are taken for granted and can easily ruin your team

    Backup QB and Kicker.

I swear to Joe Namath, Brunell better not take a snap this year or we are screwed. Commence crossing fingers………..now.

  6. avatar Ryan M says:

Let’s just hope the Sanchize doesn’t go down

  7. avatar J!E!T!S! says:

Why not? I mean Sanchez needs a mentor and Kellen Clemens has less experience than Sanchez now. If possible keep Kellen as well since it’s an uncapped year and cut one of the other scrubs or put them on the practice squad. Brunell’s been around forever and played in a bunch of playoff games plus he was a scrambling QB just like Mark’s supposed to be. Maybe he could teach him how not to get injured while running out of the pocket.

  8. avatar Mel31602 says:

I don’t get all the brunell hate here. He’s old but we need a qb who can teach sanchez and brunell has a much better pedigree than anyone they have. They worked him out before signing him so clearly he has something left

  9. avatar James says:

There’s still a chance we keep Clemens around and ditch the other two. We’ll see.

  10. avatar J!E!T!S! says:

Who else is available anyways? Brett Farve’s not coming back.

  11. Wow we got an old experienced QB as a backup now , instead of Matt Cassel…oh wait, it’s Kellen Clemons who has absolutly been terrible every chance he’s gotten. If Sanchez goes down we are dead in the water either way, at least now we have someoone who was good once backing him up.

  12. avatar DHarvey says:

I agree with Mel31602. Brunell is really an ‘assistant coach’ type role with more recent experience to share than QB Coach Cavanaugh. And heaven forbid, if Sanchez got hurt, Brunell could certainly handle the ‘game management dink and dunk pass’ type role..better than Clemens for sure..so let’s hope that Sanchez stays healthy and Brunell is a bench confident helping Sanchez mature in his sophomore year. I’m all for it and frankly they can get rid of all the others because Brad Smith is always available as a 3rd option. That way, we can add an extra player either on defense or offense. Welcome to the Jets Mark Brunell..at least from this fan.

  13. avatar Merc20 says:

This is a slightly above lateral move. At least we have a backup with experience. I am less than enthused with all our current backups so I’m all for having a true vet backup Sanchize. If he were to get hurt for any extended period of time, we’d probably be screwed anyway.

  14. avatar Marvel says:

This new TJB is official ..

  15. avatar Randy says:

This move is only for him being a veteren and he can tell Mark Sanchez things that may help him moving forward. Not to mention he is a winner. He was obviously a Super Bowl Champion playing as Drew Brees backup last season with the Saints.

This all but means the end of Kellen Clemens.Next season I would expect the depth chart to look like this..

    1-Mark Sanchez
    2-Mark Brunell
    3-Erik Ainge

Clemens and O’Connell will be cut during the preseason.

  16. avatar Brendan says:

Mentor? Um, guys? Isn’t that what our QB Coach and/or Offensive Coordinator for? I’m pretty sure they both have more experience in this roll than Brunell.

    • avatar juunit says:

Again, there is a difference between an actual member of the team and a coach. Not to mention the coaches haven’t actually been on the field playing any time recently so Brunell’s advice and opinions are more recent and therefore more useful.

    • avatar jameson says:

Sanchez mentioned recently in an article how much he leaned upon Thomas Jones for his veteran presence. He said TJ would tell him what to expect (emotionally) in various situations during the playoffs.

Brunell should provide THAT sort of benefit; not to actually throw the football.

I’m curious to find out if Brunell can be stashed on the PUP, (on roster, but not 53) and still be able to collect on his contract and provide the leadership role that we’re obviouslly seeking.

      • avatar Bent says:

You’re on rocky ground by using the PUP artificially.

It would also preclude him from taking the practice field, which probably negates the benefit of getting him.

  17. avatar dtrain says:

Jeez can someone say overreacting? If Sanchez goes down the difference between Brunell and Clemons is not that far…Brunell’s age/experience is more valuable than what Clemons has to offer…which anyone with a brain saw is nothing when he had to step in last year. Lets hope he can help mentor and improve Sanchez going into year two

    • avatar Brendan says:

I seem to remember Clemens at least almost-pulling a rabbit out of his helmet against the Ravens. If Brunell played the Ravens the Jets would lose by 3….but that’s only because the defense would only give up 3 points.

  18. i just hope he’s the 3rd all year… keep the guy that’s been in the offense for 5 years.

  19. avatar Marvel says:

If anybody gets worked up over this they have serious issues .. Clemens is horrible .. If this move gets him cut I consider it a great move ..

Everybody said if Sanchez goes down for a long time we are screwed .. So does this move make us anymore screwed than we would have been prior to signing Brunell ? Nope ..

  20. I really don’t see why you guys are complaining so much. If Mark Sanchez goes down, we are f****d regardless. Brunell is a veteran who has been around for a long time and all we ask of him is to be Sanchez’s mentor, nothing more than that. Would I have prefered that we have gone with Jeff Garcia at the start of last year, sure, but right now he’s our best option as a veteran QB. Guy’s stop complaining about the move. Clemens has done nothing to prove himself. Ever since the great Justin McCareins dropped that ball in Baltimore week 2 in ’07 he’s just gotten worse. I’d rather have Brunell mentor Sanchez than Clemens as the #2 doing nothing.

    • avatar Brendan says:

…..Isn’t that what they pay a QB Coach for?

      • All I’m syaing is that a lot of people are blowing this way out of proportion. He’s just a veteran back up, we’re not expecting him to come in and throw for 4,000 yards. May I ask you why you are so against this move?

        • avatar Brendan says:

          Waste of a roster spot.

If he does come in it throws the line out of whack.

He is not better than what we have.

          He is noodle-armed.

          He is immobile.

He has no knowledge of the playbook.

          • the only thing I care about is that he has MUCH more experience than any QB on the roster and Clemens will do absolutely nothing to help Sanchez’s progression as a QB. As far as a football player at this stage in his career, I agree with you, Brunell is bringing nothing to the table, but neither is Kellen Clemens for that matter. If Clemens or Brunell have to take any snaps this year we are in trouble regardless

          • Plus, I believe Bru’s left-handed, as am I, so that’s cool for me. But the OL is gonna be a bit freaked if they have to change all their assignments on the fly…

      • avatar Harvlis says:

        Brendan,

I’m with you. If there is a cut, as a result of this move, it should be the QB coach. Who needs him, now.

        Revis Doin’ Revis,

The thing is, we don’t have to be screwed, if Sanchez goes down. Jet management made the decision to take a forty year old QB, who hasn’t played in years, instead of picking up a quality back-up. We really need to hear Tanny explain himself, on this move. I hate it.

        • avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

Who were they going to get? Explain to me who the options were. To start off with, we were limited by the top eight Free Agency rules, so we had to wait for a quality QB. And I don’t remember a “great” backup being available. All I remember being available are either a bunch of old journeymen (Brunell, Bulger, Garcia, etc.) or headaches like Jamarcus Russell and Vick. And Vick wasn’t really “available”.

Clemens does not have enough on-field experience to really mentor Sanchez on what it takes to be a franchise QB, Ainge and O’Connell are even less than Clemens. Brunell has been a franchise QB. He’s also probably pretty cheap contract wise.

  21. avatar Jason says:

Just a guess but he probably got two years at the minimum with a mid level signing bonus/roster bonus for this season, likely around 500K. If thats all they are paying him I think its a good move.

  22. avatar SackDance99 says:

I have no idea how Brunell would be in a spot start and I don’t like that he’s left-handed. But, Clemens is not an NFL-calibre QB. He isn’t a has been, like Brunell, he’s worse: a never-was. Sure, he knows the system, but he can’t execute. He’s a liability with no upside for mentoring.

Brendan, we’re on the same page 99% of the time, but this is the 1%. I think Brunell on the sideline means that Cavanaugh can be in the booth on occasions. So, I wouldn’t naysay the value of having a vet mentor, a role Brunell would embrace and Clemens would chafe at.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Brunell would embrace anything that pays him at this point. He better be doing backflips on the sideline.

And I see your point about the booth, but in todays game with photos and headsets etc. is having someone with Sanchez on the sideline that big a deal? Schotty is the one that Sanchez will spend his time talking to down there anyway.

I dunno, I see Brunell as being just as useless as Clemens. Clemens knows the playbook and Brunell has been around a while, I don’t see either as a reason for keeping either one, to be honest.

  23. avatar James in TN says:

Hello Mark the 2nd, goodbye Kellen, Kevin and Eric. Brad will be the 3rd we can now get a 2nd kicker and more punters to try out!!!!

  24. avatar James in TN says:

Oh, also we signed Brunell for 1 year since there will be a lockout next year.

    • avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

If I’m not mistaken, and correct me if I am wrong Bent, but the lockout would not void the final year of the contract and would still be on the books for 2012 unless he retired.

      • avatar Bent says:

This is undecided. If there is a lockout, a judge will decide what happens to existing contracts.

In any case they could cut him after the season and avoid a cap hit for next year, so it wouldn’t make any difference.

The reason for the two year deal is so that if he does well and wants to play one more year, the Jets have him signed, but it doesn’t commit them to next year at all.

  25. avatar Mike F. says:

I think I’m going to buy a Brunell jersey just to spite Brendan. Why are you against this so much? Who cares who the back-up is? If there is a chance he can help out Sanchez in any way shape or form, then I welcome him with open arms. Its not like Clemens has anything to contribute, nor do Ainge or O’Connell for that matter. We are built to win now, and having a veteran who has been in the playoffs several times in the ear of a second year QB doesn’t sound like such a bad idea to me….

    • avatar Brendan says:

The only person who would be mad about your jersey purchase would be you for the wasted cheddar.

And you not caring about backup QB is pretty telling.

  26. avatar JUSTWIN says:

I’m ok with the move but if we cut Clemens you know Belicheat will sign him asap.

  27. So who are we dropping QB wise?

PS: Anyone excited about the preview of hard knocks? It’s only 12 minutes, but I’ll take anything at the moment.

    • avatar HHH says:

Hell yea… They said Brunell and clemens r going to actually go for #2 QB spot, so both aing and O’Connell would be cut, I THINK because they have Brad smith as QB too.

  28. avatar Mike F. says:

Like it has been said several times in this post, before Brunell we were screwed if Sanchez went down. After signing Brunell, if Sanchez goes down, just as screwed. With the addition of Cromartie, LT , Holmes, Wilson, and even Conner the last thing I was worried about was who was holding the clipboard on the sidelines

    • avatar Brendan says:

I’m sorry I actually want someone capable behind Sanchez. Accumulating more junk doesn’t mean the team is better off, its more junk. It is the single most important bench spot on the team and ours moves like my arthritic grandfather (he is dead, btw).

      • avatar dtrain says:

You rather want someone capable behind Sanchez? KC is capable? If anything KC is a waste of a roster space…rather see what Ainge or O’Connell can do before watching KC take any meaning snaps. You know damn well Tanny was shopping KC around for ANYTHING and probably couldn’t even get a 7th rounder for him

  29. avatar Mike F. says:

Who else could we have gotten? There was Marc Bulger but I’m not sure he wouldve been any better than Brunell. Its clear that this team had no faith in Clemens as the number 2 and apparantly doesn’t feel that Ainge or O’Connell have enough upside to continue to groom. No other free agent veterans come to mind other than Culpepper and I don’t even want to think about that

    • avatar HHH says:

Mark would want alot of money.. and Daunte still wants to start..

    • avatar Harvlis says:

Ainge looked good to me, in the last pre-season. O’Connell hasn’t seen any action. I guess that, when you are a heartbeat away from the SB, you can’t wait, while young QB’s learn. You need to have a seasoned vet ready to go. Why Brunell, I can’t wait to hear Tanny explain this one.

  30. avatar Ryan M says:

I totally agree Brendan, if Brunell falls of the bench he’ll be done for the season. Now I just pray that Sanchez doesn’t go down, not that I was totally comfortable with Kellen coming in, but atleast he knows the playbook inside and out. Sanchez has plenty of mentors…coaches

    • avatar dtrain says:

But doesn’t that scare you? KC was in this system for that many years that played that badly against the Bucs. With how bad the Bucs D was, couple with the great field position they got all game, it was hideous watching that man control the offense when the run game was working pretty well. Erik Ainge would of looked like Brady comapred to KC. He has nothing to offer the team from the backup role. Brunell has been around the block and could offer in game experience and some tips on other teams

  31. avatar tyrone says:

brenden you are a piece of work

  32. avatar Andy says:

Well I am not totally against having Brunell as a back up to help mentor Sanchez. I think we all agreed before that Sanchez needed a Veteran presence. Brunell was available. I am not sure who else was? The thing I have a problem with is the two years. Why? Dunno. I agree that if Brunell sees any significant amount of time on the field it would be bad. But I would feel a little more comfortable with Brunell than Clemens. I just don’t see Clemens as a quality QB. Atleast from what I have seen. Who knows maybe Clemens will still be the #2?

  33. avatar tyrone says:

brunell brings that winning super bowl ring he got at new orleans so he could show it around the clubhouse plus he played in more playoff games then cavanagh

  34. avatar tyrone says:

well the mets are loosing again

  35. At least we know Brunell is ok with the role that Tanny and Rex want him for. Clemens still thinks he can start in this league and wants a chance to compete. He can’t be happy wasting his career as Sanchez’s backup. Let him go and maybe he can get a chance somewhere else. I doubt he will go to NE since there would be less of a chance of him ever seeing the field there.

  36. avatar g.JETSon says:

Kellen mentoring Sanchez is the blind leading the the blind. Guy just won a ring, if he was good enough to backup Brees he is good enough here. We don’t when a SB with any backup but we can still have a good year with a veteran back there. The D is great and the run game is stout. How much worse can Brunell be versus Chez lat year and we went to the AFC title game?
QB coaches and OC that have never played the position at the pro level do not offer the same instructions. Schotty doesn’t know how it feels to execute an overly ambitous areial gameplan designed by a young OC who has been dubbed a genuis when nothing but the run is working and you have already thrown hella picks! Think Brunell doesn’t grab the hot dog or at least shield him from camera view? Schotty is learnig his job and doesn’t have insights to pass on as a QB, plus a player has a different viewpoint than a coach. There are players then there is the coaching staff, a good veteran is that bridge and is always a plus.

  37. avatar SackDance99 says:

I think the back up QB is important and I’m not wild about Brunell, but Clemens was just flat out awful. Does Brunell have anything left in the tank? Smart coaches like Sean Payton and Rex Ryan think so. Also, guys will be cut during the pre-season. IMO, a smart, but limited QB, like Ryan Fitzpatrick, could be available. Back up QB is a tricky position. Ideally, you want a vet that could step in, but the vet can’t be so good that he’ll want the starter spot. Guys like Billy Volek, Tyler Thigpen, Fitzpatrick, and Bruce Gradkowski, etc. are hard to get.

  38. avatar JDB says:

Drew Brees certainly played his best games ever with Brunell behind him.

  39. Isn’t there anybody else out there?

  40. avatar boozer says:

    Just ask Brees.
“You’re talking about a great mentor in so many ways, ” Brees said. “This will be his 17th (NFL) season. He’s started so many games, started so many big games. He’s played a lot of football at a very high level. He’s been to conference championship games before, been to Pro Bowls; he’s done all those things. He’s played in a lot of interesting systems with a lot of great coaches. There’s just a wealth of knowledge that I can draw from.
“First of all, we’re very good friends. In the offseason, we hunt, play golf, go out to eat, have beers. Mark is one of those guys — God forbid something happens to me — but if he’s in there, I’ve got all the confidence in the world that he can lead us to victory and win games for us. I know that everybody in that locker room feels that way, too. Plus, his teammates like him. They see how hard he works; they see how he carries himself. He’s just a solid guy.”

    That’s good enough for me.

  41. avatar Tish says:

I would have much rather have given the money to Douglas than this BUM; and bum is not an exaggeration
