    Sweet infant baby Jesus.

    DISLIKE.

  2. avatar bilal says:

what will happen when holmes is activated… clowney better on his game in special teams or i dont see him getting dressed

  3. avatar Pdubbs says:

Awesome !! Coles belongs with us. I know he is old and not at all what he used to be but he might really help out while Santonio is on the sidelines.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Yeah!! We always need whiney turncoats to come crawling back to us!!

      • avatar Pdubbs says:

Right cause he is the only guy to leave a team and them come back … or the only guy in the NFL to cry about money ???

Get over it. He fits in for now.

        • avatar Brendan says:

Um, he whined and complained about wanting to get paid. We let him leave, then stupidly traded back for him. Then he continued to complain every season about his money. Sorry, but I won’t be attending his welcome back party.

          • avatar bilal says:

yea and in the middle of complaining he was one of the toughest WR’ers the jets had. He was hurt pretty much his entire second stint with the Jets but barely missed any games.

I dont care if youre complaining about money as long as you are still giving 110% out there.

  4. avatar Ferraro41 says:

It’s a good move. They need someone to step up in the slot until Holmes comes back. I’m sure it’s not going to cost them much, even if they wind up cutting him before the season starts.

    • avatar E. Weeks says:

I agree, this is a solid move by the front office (if they go through with the plan). Despite his age and drop in production, you have someone come in who knows the system (more or less) and you can get him fairly cheap.

  5. avatar Ryan M says:

I like the move, he’ll definitely help in the first 4 weeks

  6. avatar brian311 says:

    what what what??!?

did the coaches forget we are a GROUND AND POUND team?? with Edwards, JC, Keller, LDT, and Mcknight able to catch the ball, I see no reason to bring back a aging #4 receiver who cant play specials.

if this says anything….its that Clowney’s stock is plummeting. If they do sign LC, I dont see the Clown making the roster

  7. avatar NY Smoker says:

This is the perfect signing to fill in the first 4 weeks of the season. He already knows the system, has chemistry with some of the players and is still much better than Clowney or Smith at WR. I don’t think he’ll be too proud to take a back seat as the #4 WR when Holmes returns either.

He doesn’t have much left in the tank but he’s still a lot better than anyone we have after 1-3 WR’s.

  8. avatar R in CT says:

My gut reaction is “Ugh, not again. No thank you.”

But he plays hard and his teammates have always seemed to respect him. He certainly is a reliable set of hands — I guess I’m willing to give him a shot. What could possibly go wrong?!

  9. avatar Pdubbs says:

The clown has no stock. If the Clown could play he would have been out there already.

    • avatar brian311 says:

well he is taking a spot on the roster…that would mean he has at least some value in the eyes of the coaching staff

remember we let wallace wright go, and hopefully are giving brad smith a bigger role on the offense / return game. so the #4 and 5 receivers are going to HAVE to play specials. if the team signs a guy like LC, I would see someone like Allison or Henry being the other receiver – not a one dimensional guy like Clowney

      • avatar Pdubbs says:

I think the only thing Clowney brings to the table is speed. A few years ago we didn’t have anyone that could beat a defense, so they picked him. However, now I feel that they have some weapons and prob. don’t need someone one demensional.

So while he did have a spot last year… I am not sure that will be the case this year.

Personally, I like him and he does alot of charitable things but that doesn’t score points so.

    • avatar NY Smoker says:

I think he has value as a special teams player, specifically I think he’s in line to replace Wright.

Brendan – why would you be against an upgrade to WR #4? Do you not believe he’s an upgrade over Clowney or Smith (as a WR)?

      • avatar brian311 says:

i like the clown and hope he makes the team…but nothing in his career has ever shown me that he can be a good special teams player. i dont think that is in his skill set

        • avatar NY Smoker says:

Please explain what someone needs to do to show you their special teams potential.

          • avatar brian311 says:

be physical, hit someone, shed a block, make a tackle. run down the field with reckless abandonment. you have to be borderline insane to play the gunner position in special teams. the Clown is fast, but i have never thought of him as filling this role

          • avatar NY Smoker says:

Aside from chasing down someone returning an INT, you would never see a WR doing any of that. You (or I) have no idea if he has the potential to be a good special teamer.

I believe Westhoff has stated that he plans on using him to replace Wright.

          • avatar brian311 says:

if westy said that, then i missed it. some WR you know are physical and would be great special teamers. Edwards, for one, would be a special teams stud if he wanted to.

i just dont see that from the Clown. and at 6-0 185, he isnt the ideal size either. like I said, I hope I am wrong

          • avatar NY Smoker says:

            Here’s the article Brian
            http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/30/sports/football/30jets.html

Westhoff is looking at using the speedy wide receiver David Clowney as Wright’s replacement.

“I know I can do it,” Clowney said. “That’s not a question. I come from a special-teams college at Virginia Tech. I started at flyer for my last two years of college. It’s something I’m not new to.”

      • avatar Brendan says:

Is Coles better than Edwards, Cotch, Keller or Smith? Not in my eyes.

        • avatar NY Smoker says:

If you think Brad Smith is a better receiver than LC, even in the twilight of his career, I’d like some of what you’re smoking. No, I’d like A LOT of what you’re smoking.

He’s a clear upgrade to WR #4, and it’s good to have solid depth.

        • avatar Snakeman says:

Gotta think he’s better than Smith strictly as a receiver, but less valuable on kickoffs, kick returns, gunner on punts, and wildcat-type running plays. Smith is more deserving of a roster spot in my opinion, but nobody says we’re cutting Smith. I’d take Coles over Smith as a #3 receiver until Holmes returns. I know Keller can de facto serve as a #3 in terms of production, but I mean physically a third receiver in 3-wide sets (and yes I know Keller has lined up as the third receiver before). My point is, it’s not an egregiously bad move to sign Coles. Smith brings a lot to the team, but provides little offensive value as an actual receiver. His offensive value is on rushing plays or maybe screens.

          • avatar maynard13 says:

Brad smith is not better than coles at age 40. Either way its not that big of a deal he will be the 4th WR. Plus he did have a decent game against us in the playoffs

  10. avatar deuce4417 says:

this speaks mounds for clowney not going to be on the team!. great move! helll of alot better than bringing in TO

  11. avatar matt says:

cant hurt esp the first four games

  12. avatar MEL31602 says:

Clearly the Jets wanted another receiver and I’d MUCH rather have Coles than TO. Coles is still respected in the locker room and like others have said, he knows the system (maybe he can even help teach it to Santonio….)

  13. avatar Marvel says:

Come on, Coles is a better WR than Smith ..

  14. avatar bilal says:

Agreed- Coles is definitely a better WR than Smith. However doesnt mean at this point of his career hes a better player. Special teams, wildcat and hes a pretty good blocker too.

    • avatar NY Smoker says:

I absolutely love Brad Smith as a football player. Their’s no reason to get rid of him or use him less if we get Coles. Coles is basically a fill in at WR #3 until Holmes gets back and then depth at WR. Smith will still be used.

  15. avatar Brendan says:

Does anyone here watch games other than Jets games?

I mean that seriously. Coles was absolutely horrible last year. And please spare me the “Carson Palmer doesn’t like short receivers” line.

  16. avatar Marvel says:

Lol I just thought of something .. Revis is “whining” about money .. We should trade him & never look back .. What do you have to say about that Brendan .. I’m just saying ..

    • avatar Brendan says:

Coles was never even close to being as good as Revis is.

Coles also complained about a very nice deal he received.

Coles also complained after he had a bad season.

Revis is complaining after having one of the greatest, if not the greatest, season for a CB ever.

      Apples and Watermelons, my friend.

      • avatar bilal says:

Brendon- why do you care that he complained about money so much? Did his complaining ever translate to subpar effort and performance as a jet player?!?!

This guy got hung out to dry on so many chad soft tosses and got nailed every time. Why do you think Chad liked him so much? Cause hes one of the few WR who will keep competing over the middle while getting killed all the time.

        • avatar Brendan says:

“Did his complaining ever translate to subpar effort and performance as a jet player?!?!”

Um….Yes? Why do you think the Jets simply let him walk away?

          • avatar bilal says:

Because he got old and they wanted to move in another direction. It was never about this “coles isnt working his ass off here because he wants money”

          • avatar NY Smoker says:

Because he wanted more money than he was worth at that point in his career. The Bengals found that out the hard way. Now he comes back for a discount.

            Tanny is the man.

          • avatar Brendan says:

This isn’t Tanny pulling a fast one. They didn’t want Coles because he simply wasn’t good and would be a problem when Cotchery got all the looks.

He was old then, he’s older now. He did nothing last year. He’s terrible and I would much rather have Smith (who at least is big and athletic) out there then Coles who the defense can cover with a DE at this point.

          • avatar NY Smoker says:

I love Brad Smith as a football player, but he’s not a very good receiver. It’s not like we have to get rid of Smith if we get Coles. Smith will still be utilized.

          • avatar madbacker12 says:

dang Brendan I thought you always

supported our players the mark brunell deal and now this. But you are quick to defend other players on the team like Gholston or Bryan thomas who haven’t produced or proved anything in this league.

          • avatar Brendan says:

So I’m supposed to defend geriatric football players, not the young prospect who still has a chance to be good or the lunch-pail OLB who does the dirty work and gets no credit.

            What am I thinking!?

  17. avatar tish says:

    First we hear about an interest in TO and now in Coles. Does anyone seriously think that this is the weakness of the team? Holmes is only out for 4 games. Are, Smith, Clowney, Allison and Henry worthless? Isn’t there bigger potential needs on the team such as: RB- if Greene is hurt they do not have an adquate replacement to carry the load;
DL- they have a lot of “if” players in Potty, Kroul, my man Gholston, and why did they pass on Douglas (letting him go to Miami)?; QB backup where Brunell will look like the leader at the Last Supper. Or is the mentor/Brunell hypothesis in play? That is the one where you bring in an older player to mentor a younger one. In this case the only thing Coles is qualified to mentor on is to advise Revis on how to complain enough to extract more money out of the Jets or to force a trade.

  18. avatar Pdubbs says:

Complain about contracts, complain about bad seasons. Is not the best at his position but wants more….

You just described 80% of the NFL…

  19. avatar Jason says:

I kind of think Coles is shot, but I guess you could do worse for a third WR for 4 weeks. I just hope he does not cause a distraction when he heads to the bench in week 5.

  20. avatar Marvel says:

Talk about your “double standard” .. Revis has made over 10 mill & is set to make another 20 plus mill .. Oyea he’s complaining about the deal he asked for .. The deal he held out for ..

If you hate Coles .. You must hate Revis .. You can’t have it both ways ..

    • avatar Brendan says:

Um…Revis is the best player at his position in the NFL.

Coles wasn’t even the best player at his position on the NY Jets.

That’s one of the more illogical things I’ve seen you say, Marvel.

      • avatar bilal says:

actually its not. what are you saying is basically what he is saying- DOUBLE STANDARD.

Which basically means you treat two different situations differently because of the skill of the player.

        • avatar bilal says:

Im not saying having a double standard is wrong but you have to admit you have one.

        • avatar Brendan says:

Yes, I will treat Revis’ situation different than Coles because Revis hasn’t even entered his prime yet and Coles’ prime was well behind him.

Call me crazy, but handling them both the same way wouldn’t be good business.

  21. avatar NY Smoker says:

Brad Smith – Career (4 Seasons)
    60 receptions, 513 yards, 2 TD’s

    LC – 2009
    43 receptions, 514 yards, 5 TD’s

    • avatar Brendan says:

I am aware. Smith also didn’t start at receiver.

Coles is just not good. Plain & simple. And how pleasant will he be when he’s a bench player?

      • avatar NY Smoker says:

Smith didn’t start at receiver because he wasn’t good enough at receiver to get on the field. You can’t say Coles stinks and Smith is good at the same time. I don’t know what you’re basing your opinion on but I get the feeling it has more to do with the contract whining you were talking about than actual skill.

      • avatar NY Smoker says:

If Coles signs here it has to be with the understanding he’s #4 WR after week 4. He’d be a fool to think otherwise.

      • avatar madbacker12 says:

        Receptions 674
        Receiving yards 8,595
        Receiving TDs 49

        these are coles career stats

      • avatar Brendan says:

Coles refused to believe he was #2 to Cotch. I don’t think Smith is good and Coles sucks. I think neither is that great at WR, but I’d rather have the younger, bigger, more athletic player (even if his hands are worse) beacuse Coles could be covered with a mannequin.

  22. avatar JesusRevis says:

WOW Whats up with the new website layout? As someone who works in html design, not a big fan of the new structure.

As far as Coles, as long as he is content with being the #4 receiver, welcome aboard!

  23. avatar Marvel says:

Yesterday it was Brunell, today it’s Coles, I hate to say it but you’ve been a little illogical your self the last couple days ..

I’m not gonna get into the Revis is the best “debate”(or will I ?) but you say that like it’s fact .. When the QB has 4 seconds to get the rock off is easy to make your #1 look like “the” #1 .. I’m confident Aso would put up just as good if not better numbers than Revis if we swapped players ..

But yea noway Smith is a better WR than Coles ..

    • avatar Brendan says:

Because I don’t like the Jets locker room turning into a retirement home for aging veterans looking to make paycheck (any paycheck)?

Let’s not turn this into a Revis debate, seeing as everyone who knows this stuff (I don’t mean myself, btw) says he’s by far the best in the game.

  24. avatar bilal says:

Brendan- You watched coles from 06-08 right? So where is the big difference in the following stats? Wouldn’t you say these two players were equal?

    06 91 1098 12.1 58 6
    07 55 646 11.7 57 6 (12games)
    08 70 850 12.1 54 7

    06 82 961 11.7 71 6
    07 82 1130 13.8 50 2
    08 71 858 12.1 56 5

  25. avatar runleon29 says:

if david clowney is really this expendable, then he should been released over wallace wright months ago. at least wright was a standout on special teams.

    • avatar Pdubbs says:

I’m pretty mad they got rid of Wallace Wright. However, I think Carolina will let him play some lays at WR. I gotta believe that was what he wanted.

  26. avatar e_man says:

    Bye Bye Clowney?

  27. avatar Marvel says:

Lmao .. Since when do YOU listen to “everyone else” .. Who the idiots on ESPN or sports talk radio .. They all just repeat the first guy who said it ..

The Second Revis has back to back bad games those same experts will jump off the bandwagon.. You slippin ..

    • avatar Brendan says:

Hah, really, Marvel? You want to argue about Revis being the best CB in the game? On a Jets blog? After he marooned a baker’s dozen of top-flight receivers on Revis Island?

I say, by my own account, Revis is the best. But if I said that I run the risk of being called a homer, so I deferred to the “experts”. Yes, I hate them, but at least I’m not saying “Revis is the best because I say so!”

  28. avatar Kevin T says:

Coles is a quitter and a lazy player. It disgusted me to watch him play his last year with us.

  29. avatar deuce4417 says:

we all know brendan does not care for coles because of his past but facts are facts adn he makes us better. injuries!? thats because chad would lay him out to dry on those crossing routs. no seperation!? when you have a QB with no arm its really really easy for a DB to cover ground on passes and blanket the WR. he without a doubt adn i’m sorry NOBODY can argue this is that he is better than all the #4 reciever prospects on the current roster. dude still has hands, and can still run a good rout.

  30. avatar Marvel says:

Nah a Revis debate was not and is not my objective .. But one great season is translated into “greatest of all time” very easily now a days ..

    • avatar Brendan says:

No no no, I don’t mean “body of work” greatest of all time. I’ve said many times that Revis has only played 1.5 or 2 seasons at a truly elite level. That’s not GOAT status. I mean in terms of an individual season, Revis had one of the best, if not THE best, seasons for a CB.

  31. avatar BigKatt says:

WORRD i can bust out the Coles jersey again!!!

  32. avatar Pdubbs says:

HAHAHAHA that was my first thought too…

  33. avatar Marvel says:

Yea you don’t have to sell me, I’m a Revis fan .. I just don’t like the contract B.S .. Which is part of the reason you don’t like Coles .. If the whole TJB can & will forgive Revis you should let Cole eat for a season ..

    • avatar Brendan says:

He’s made enough off the Jets to eat forever. I don’t like the celebration of a guy who was me-first. I guess that’s the simplest way I can put it.

      • avatar Pdubbs says:

They are all “Me first.” Even your boy Revis.

        • avatar Brendan says:

That remains to be seen. Revis is still technically not in preseason yet. If he’s in preseason and continues his griping and public disputes, then I will not be pleased either (as it stands right now I’m already annoyed by him).

I fully expect Revis to be playing and not miss a day, despite his contract woes (same with Mangold, who I have no issue with, because he’s taken the right path on his contract “dispute”), but these are young guys who are the best at their position in the sport. I’m not going to sit here and compare their positions with that over an over-30 WR with diminished skills who wanted to get paid like a #1.

          • avatar Pdubbs says:

well right I don’t think there is any comparison. However, you can’t bring morals into any NFL discussion.

When you compare Coles to Smith or any other “WR” we have… you gotta see that Coles as a stop gap is not a bad option.

            -Ex Jet
-Solid hands (good option for Sancho)
-Can possibly mentor some of our young recievers.

If we are luckey he won’t catch any passes and all the scoring will be done by everyone else.

            • avatar Bent says:

Coles actually dropped more passes than any Jet last season. That’s not to say he doesn’t have solid hands, but maybe is a sign he’s past his best.

          • avatar bilal says:

Bent- Holmes had 9 drops this year. Werent you one of the people who thought he was better or equal to marshall?

            • avatar Bent says:

To be 100% accurate, I was arguing against the contention that “you couldn’t possibly argue that Holmes was as good as Marshall”, so I proved that you could at least make a reasonable argument (based on yards per target), but then I conceded that Marshall probably was better, just not for that price (picks and salary).

I’m sure I took the drops into account anyway.

PFF has Holmes down for 8 and Marshall also down for 8 last year, so it was close. (More targets for Marshall though, but Holmes had plenty of targets too, so his drop rate is not nearly among the league leaders). In 2008, Marshall dropped 16, Holmes 8 (and Braylon 19) per PFF. I did concede at the time that Marshall had improved his catch rate (as has Braylon).

  34. avatar Pdubbs says:

Everyone “wants to win a Championship” or “be a ____ till I retire” but what they really mean is…. I’ll be here until I don’t get paid how I want…..

  35. avatar greene says:

too bad we couldnt get Pennington to come in as a backup. it would’ve been awesome to see chad and coles in the jets green and white for one last season. pennington would’ve been the perfect backup for sanchez, a guy who can mentor and still win games when needed. and coles is a good filler for the first 4 games.

  36. avatar Marvel says:

People grow .. You must first set a course before you embark on a journey or else you will forever be lost in the jungle that is life .. You feel me ..

  37. avatar deuce4417 says:

here is a question…….. think clowney will give up his number and his job!? ha ha ha ha or will we see a 11 on coles’ back

  38. avatar bilal says:

If people wanna make an argument based on his performance last year then I can at least listen to it- but to complain about coles as a jet is really silly.

Look at his 08 numbers compared to Cotchery- nearly IDENTICAL! So please explain how in 08 Cotchery was way better than Coles.

  39. avatar Pdubbs says:

Cotchery is way better then Coles because Cotchery is the man…..

    • avatar bilal says:

I agree he is better now, probably way better. My point was against people who said coles wasnt good for the jets.

      • avatar Brendan says:

Coles also made almost $2 million more for those nearly identical stats, and then wanted a raise.

        • avatar bilal says:

He didnt ask for a raise at that point. He was guaranteed that last year in his contract before the season started and then moved on afterwards.

However I’m glad you ignored the fact that he played equally well as Cotchery by bring up money. Your hating of coles sounds more subjective than objective

          • avatar Brendan says:

            OH RLY!?

“Coles…has wanted a long-term deal for the past several years…But once again, the two sides could not reach an agreement on a long-term deal and it was decided Coles would be allowed to seek his own long-term deal in free agency, which begins at midnight Friday.”

            Raise, long-term deal, same thing.

          • avatar bilal says:

You cant just say “raise and asking for long term contract is the same thing”

Revis wants a raise and a long term contract.

Once 08 was complete what did he owe the Jets? Why should he have accepted the deal when he got a better one for the bengals? He actually made the right decision for himself, did anyone really thinkg the Jets were gonna resign him that offseason!?!?!? NO!

          • avatar Brendan says:

            Dude…what are you talking about?

He didn’t “get a better deal from the Bengals”. He got released by the Jets because his demands for a long-term contract were way too high.

This became evident when the Bengals cut him after just one year of his four year deal.

          • avatar bilal says:

really? break down the offer between the jets and the bengals for me please

          • avatar bilal says:

Coles got 10 million guaranteed in that 4 year contract with hopes of actually continuing for the bengals with a chance of making 28.

The jets refused a long term deal and only offer the guaranteed 6 million for 09.

So, dude, he did get the better deal.

          • avatar Brendan says:

That’s easy. You can’t. The Jets never made one.

In 2008 they guaranteed the final two years of Coles’ deal at $11 million ($5 in ’08, $6 in ’09), to keep from giving Coles an extension. AFter 2008 Coles complained and whined about a long-term deal, even though he had entered into this special arrangement. The Jets simply made a new deal, they’d release him to find a new deal if he waived the final $6 million of guaranteed money. Seems like a good investment to me.

          • avatar bilal says:

so you basically just allude to my point. he didnt owe the jets anything. he did what was best for him and got a better deal elsewhere! What player wouldn’t do that in his situation?

          • avatar bilal says:

            “Dude…what are you talking about?

He didn’t “get a better deal from the Bengals”. ”

So did he or did he not get a better deal?

          • avatar Brendan says:

            ?

He complained until he got what he wanted. Sounds like a two year old in a department store that I’d want to give a smack to.

          • avatar Brendan says:

Um…he got A deal, if that’s what you want to hear.

The “better deal” doesn’t really apply, since he wasn’t getting offers from the Jets.

And great for him he lasted 25% of his deal.

          • avatar NY Smoker says:

He had $6 million garaunteed coming from the Jets, he left it on the table for more money. Obviously the Jets were correct in their thinking he wasn’t worth more money. That doesn’t mean he’s worthless.

          • “My time with the Jets was great,” Coles said. “I love the fans, my teammates and my coaches. I always wanted to finish my career in New York, but I’ve always said this is a business.”

-I guess now he gets a chance

  40. avatar Pdubbs says:

no I was just being a Cotchery fan… i hear what your saying

  41. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball (new name pending) says:

love coles but he was terrible his last season on the jets. he had so many big drops. I just don’t see how he’s any better of a receiver than smith or clowney at this point

    • avatar bilal says:

I really disagree. HOw many big drops did he have really? He caught 70 balls and had 850 yards that year! What were people expecting from him? 90 and 1000?

    • avatar greene says:

because neither of’em can run a good route, which coles is great at, or at least should still pretty decent at.

  42. avatar bilal says:

There was 2 times that I saw Coles leaving Giants stadium on crutches YET was right back on the field the next week. One game i remember specifically was in 06 when the Jets almost made that miraculous comeback against the patriots that included those two amazing catches by coles and cotch.

  43. avatar bilal says:

I think the problem is that Jets fans are spoiled by Cotchery- how many WR’s are actually humble and dont feel the need to constantly be appreciated. Cotchery is a rarity. Coles wanting money as a WR is actually the norm.

  44. avatar Pdubbs says:

Coles has always been a gamer for us. Anyone that doesn’t think that really wasn’t paying attention during his Jets career. He always caught Chad’s weak over the middle passes, he always caught passes with his hands and he always played hurt. The guy is going to be a 3rd and 4th option on a play. Steady hands and good route running is going to be great for Sanchez….

    • avatar Brendan says:

      Which Jets career?

The first (gamer, quiet, loved him)?

The second (still gamer, complained, showed true colors IMO)?

Or this one, the third (remains to be seen)?

      • avatar Pdubbs says:

but both times you said he was a gamer…. just about EVERY WR cries about money or playing time…. I don’t see how you are still mad at Coles.

Did he not sign your ball or something ??

      • avatar Pdubbs says:

Revis- Gamer, showed his true colors before he set foot on the field… only to follow it up with another whinny performance 3 years later.

  45. Noooooo!!!!
    This is a bad move!!!!

Coles is a “CRY BABY” and all he does now that his is washed up is whine and complain!!!!

I was ecstatic when the Jets let him go to Washington, but have been ticked off ever since we traded Santana Moss for his decrepit sorry old butt just to bring him back!!!

He gave Brett Favre grief (not that I am defending Favre) when he should have been helping the team instead of sulking!!!!

What’s he going to do now….. Complain that Chad is not on the team? Sorry but I don’t want him or his pity party here!!

    • I like Coles a lot, but Moss was my n***a! That trade was terrible especially after Moss had a very nice postseason with the TD catch in San Diego and then the Punt Return in Pitt.

      • avatar Bent says:

I’ll defend that trade forever. Moss stopped playing hard during that season (wouldn’t go over the middle, more often than not went straight out of bounds when returning a kick) and became a horrible fit with Chad, even though he had 10 TDs the previous year. He had one year left on his contract and the Jets would not have been able to extend him (they had to let Ferguson, Mackenzie and Jordan go, remember).

He was good before 2004 and did have a nice postseason, but they had basically no choice at the time, even though it might not seem that way if you revisit it now.

  46. avatar Pdubbs says:

I let everyone else ride the high road …. leaves more room for me on the low road

  47. avatar JET Lag says:

    This again

  48. avatar Pdubbs says:

Jet fan 4 life…. you are wayyy late to the party my friend.

  49. avatar JET Lagg says:

laveranues jackson? They are not talking about who I’m trying not to think about.

  50. I still have a sour taste in my mouth of that deep ball Coles dropped in the Seattle snow when Mangini made that ridiculous decision to go for it on fourth and short. However I have a tremendous amount of respect for Coles as a Jet and I know he complains a lot, I know he made a scene when we got Favre cuz he missed his BFF Chad, but I mean he can be our slot guy for the first 4 weeks I guess until Homles is back. Not in love with the move, but I odn’t mind oles coming back for his third tenure with us and retiring a Jet. And atleast I can rock that #87 Jersey for one more year lol

  51. avatar patpat says:

lmao. What an entertaining blog this has become.

    Pdubs… priceless

You guys should just give it a rest I don’t think Brendan is gunna back down – I don’t think he ever has.

  52. avatar Dylan says:

I don’t see how anyone could dislike this signing. He gives us a 3rd legit WR for the first four games of the season. Pretty damn good 4th WR on the depth chart! He probably won’t contribute too much if everyone stays healthy, but that is a very big IF. We have a ton of depth at the WR position this year. That was something we were really missing last year. Coles is also tough as nails. He always came up with big catches for the Jets, and he isn’t afraid to go over the middle.

  53. Not for this at all. I liked the young Coles, but not the player he is now. Think abut how he played at the end of his last stint with the Jets. Remember Farve throwing to a non-existent, unmotivated Coles in a lousy loss to Seattle (3-0?) at the end of that season?

An anomaly? How about how he played for the Bengals last year against us in a playoff game? Coles used to fight for any air ball back when Pennington was our QB, but hasn’t been that type of player for a decade.

I say give a kid a chance to fill in while Holmes in suspended. That’s where our present and future lies. WR is not a weak spot. Quit looking in the rear view mirror; it’s time to let go.

    • avatar NY Smoker says:

Coles had 6 receptions for 48 yards and a TD in the playoff game to lead all Bengals receivers. A couple of those receptions were on Revis.

He’s an excellent 4th WR option and a nice fill in at #3 while Holmes is out and we play the entire division along with Baltimore.

      • avatar Brendan says:

So….you’d rather have Coles on the field than Keller? Because Keller is the #4 when Holmes comes back.

        • avatar NY Smoker says:

No. Coles is basically depth when Holmes comes back in my mind. If any of the 1-3 WR’s goes down or needs a blow Coles can come in and be a legit NFL WR instead of the wanna be WR’s in Smith/Clowney.

          • avatar Brendan says:

It’ll be funny if Coles gets hurt in training camp to see everyone stay so positive.

          • avatar NY Smoker says:

Yea it would be hilarious if a Jet got injured in camp. You really do hate him don’t you?

          • avatar Brendan says:

Not a catastrophic injury. One of his patented “I sprain my ankle in July and it hurts for the next 8 months” injuries.

          • avatar NY Smoker says:

If Coles is able to play he will be on the field. He always played through pain.

Where are people coming up with these idea’s that he’s not tough, lazy and a quitter???

          • avatar Brendan says:

Where did I say he wouldn’t try to play through it? But he always gets hurt, so when he inevitably does, it will be interesting to see everyone keep up these positive vibes.

          • avatar NY Smoker says:

Hopefully everyone stays healthy and we don’t see too much of him after week 4 anyway.

          • It’s probably a moot point because the Jets will probably sign Coles and we’ll all hope for the best.

W/R/T our first 4 games; they’re gonna be tough, ugly, beginning of season-type contests.

Offensively I see the Jets trying to re-establish themselves as run first (w/o TJ), maybe getting stuffed, stretching the field w/ the WR’s and then resorting to safe dump-offs to LT out of the backfield. Barring blown coverages, trick plays & ST screw-ups I see nail-biters with our 4th Quarter D being the key to victory. It’ll be one hell of a ride.

      • avatar Bent says:

He did have a nice game and I think it was wrong of the fans to boo him in week 17.

It’s true that the first four games without Holmes are vitally important. It’s a very unusual situation to bring in a guy supposedly just for that reason, but is there really a huge downside? If he underperforms or causes issues, they can easily get rid of him, so maybe he won’t (if this even happens).

He is undoubtedly past his best, as are Taylor and Tomlinson. I wouldn’t have big expectations for any of them but in reduced roles, all three could hopefully perform quite well.

  54. avatar Brendan says:

Well I’m Irish and Italian, two of the most stubborn nationalities to ever grace this wonderful Earth of ours, so you’re probably right. I don’t ever get really worked up by the comments, just love fueling the fire and if it was 100 people all nodding and agreeing things would get pretty boring around here.

  55. i like it…he will always be a jet!

  56. avatar Shane L. says:

If we get the good Coles and he’s willing to accept that he’s not “the guy” then it’s a great move. He’s as tough as they come, and will gladly go over the middle and make difficult grabs for Sanchez. Plus we’d have a good fill-in for the 1st 4 games as Holmes sits, then crazy depth when he comes back.

  57. avatar NY Smoker says:

I just wish we had a legit workhorse back behind Greene now.

    • avatar Brendan says:

They do have John Connor who can be a bruiser, if needed. I think they’d probably pick someone up if Greene went down for a long period of time though.

      • avatar NY Smoker says:

I’ve been wondering if he could take the load in between the tackles for a few games if need be. I hope so because the rest of the stable doesn’t appear to be work horse type.

        • avatar Brendan says:

We’ve talked about that a few times on here. I am in the school of thought that he could (in the Le’Ron McClain/Jason Snelling mold – athletic fullbacks with ballcarrying skills). The team would still (presumably) have LDT and McKnight to give different looks, so the running game could still be solid, but I only subscribe to this belief for a 2-3 game stretch. An entire season can’t rely on a rookie fullback, rookie scatback and a old RB.

  58. And just yesterday I was watching a clip of Schotty praising David Clowney and saying he would see a lot more work this season, especially in the first 4 weeks (It’s on the NYJ websites under videos). So much for that.

  59. I hope this is for real, Laverneous is a Jet, he stuck up for his QB, Chad pennington during the Favre fiasco. Coles and the Jets are like Liz Taylor and Richard Burton, they keep breaking up but they keep coming back together>

    Welcome home Laverneous!!
    (I hope)

  60. avatar Zartan says:

Guys who want Coles, are dreaming of a probowl team. We don’t need him ,we have the best corps on the league, and I want to see what Allison has.

In the playoffs, J Co was one of the best if not the best. At the begining of the season, he was a league leader. With Holmes and Edwards, you guys want too much. After roster cuts, there will not be 1 bum on the team.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Allison, Britt Davis, Clown, Smith. I mean, one of those guys has to be good enough for #4 duties, right? I’d rather have one of those young, athletic receivers than Coles limping around the field.

      • My thoughts exactly. I’m more concerned with running back than WR. If we’re still going to be fundamentally ground and pound, failure there will really jeopardize our season and shake the idea of “who we are.”

      • avatar NJets says:

I generally agree with you Brendan, but I think in this case we should operate under the assumption that all 4 of those guys have been thoroughly evaluated over the years and the basic answer is no, they aren’t good enough for #4 duties.

        • avatar Brendan says:

But, honestly, Coles is slower then all of them at this point. He’s smaller than all of them. He’s not as athletic at his age. So, really, the only thing that really sets him apart is his experience. A few years younger I’d say he has an agility advantage, but even that has eroded considerably.

And Allison was on IR all last season and Davis was a rookie. I wouldn’t say that they’ve already been deemed not good enough for #4 duties, they haven’t really been given ample time yet.

        • avatar Bent says:

          Maybe this is really revealing.

They didn’t address the ILB backup position or the DL depth, but they did (or are about to) address the backup QB and the 4th WR.

Does this perhaps mean they are high on Potty/Kroul/Gholston and Mauga/Butler/Satele/Westerman/Basped/Cummings/Reamer but not high on Clemens/Ainge/O’Connell and Davis/Clowney/Henry/Allison/Woodhead?

          • avatar Brendan says:

It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if a Rex Ryan-led team was much higher on its defensive prospects (since Rex had a hand in bringing a lot of them in) than the offensive ones.

          • avatar NY Smoker says:

That’s an interesting thought. My opinion is that when you have a defensive coach as good as Rex/Pettine you don’t need as much firepower as you do for a lesser coach like Schotty on the offensive side.

It may also be foreshadowing a much more pass happy offense. We don’t even have a backup workhorse running back in an offense than ran over 600 times last season.

    • avatar NY Smoker says:

Is their some kind of problem with improving the team at depth positions? I don’t understand you saying “we want too much”. It’s not like it personally costs us anything and it’s likely a 1 year deal so no cap implications either.

  61. avatar firstdown77 says:

Could this mean the end of brad smith??

    • avatar Brendan says:

Absolutely not. This could mean the end to one of the other low-level guys, but defffffinitely not Smith (who is our best special teams player, runs the wildcat, can play QB & WR and also return kicks). He’s too valuable a player, since he can fill in so many areas, to lose.

      • avatar firstdown77 says:

        We already have 5 quarterbacks.
Coles would be higher on the depth chart than smith, making smith a #5 receiver.

Kyle wilson is taking over for smith as a return man.

Either the clown or smith would be fliers on kickoffs/punts…

        • avatar NY Smoker says:

We aren’t keeping 5 QB’s, I should hope 3 at the most. Brad Smith is not going anywhere! Brendan is right, he’s FAR too valuable to this team.

Smith & Clowney will likely be used on specials.

I don’t think Wilson will return kickoffs either, I think McNight or Smith does that.

        • avatar Brendan says:

The Jets are cutting 2 (maybe 3) QBs before the season. There’s no way around it.

Smith is a #5 receiver, sure. He’s also the only guy who can really run the wildcat.

And Smith is our best ST’s player, although Conner and Laury are both very goo as well.

Smith is the most versatile threat on the team and almost irreplaceable in that regard.

    • No, ST and wildcat QB keeps him here. I’m a Brad Smith fan, but not big on him as a full-time pro-WR.

  62. avatar Marvel says:

Coles also has “Hard Knocks” experience ..

Let’s get real our offense is gonna put up nice numbers .. Enough with the small change mentality, we are big fish now .. No reverse psychology crap over here, we will be one of the best teams in the NFL for the next 10 plus seasons .. Our roster/coach/GM give us every opportunity to be great .. Don’t be scared of the greatness, just embrace it ..

    • avatar NJets says:

Couldn’t agree more. We need to operate under the assumption that the talent on the roster has been fully evaluated at this point. If the scouts and the coaches say that there is no clear #4 receiver, then I see nothing wrong with improving on that position with a veteran (a Jets veteran nonetheless). There is no team in the NFL that has shown a greater commitment to improving than us this year. Its time we accept that as a good thing, not wait for it to blow up in our faces.

I mean, lets say Coles is done, would it really change anything? Its just depth guys.

  63. avatar tyrone says:

I see coles wants a ring what the heck let join our team is sure was around when we were bad and also when we were good.coles and ellis booth deserve a ring im confident we are going to kick some culoooooooooo. this year

  64. avatar billvv says:

I’ve read all 211 posts and only one poster has suggested ‘retire as a Jet’ as a reason to return. I think that’s a big part of the deal and probably explains why he’d want to return to such a diminished role.

  65. avatar AGE says:

    Marvel

Im as optimistic as the next guy..but to say that we will be at the top of league for the next 10+ years….I dont know if you can say that after a 9-7 year and a bunch of guys that are going to be one and done

    • avatar Bent says:

One and done? They have young talent at virtually every position, nearly all of whom will be back, plus some decent payroll flexibility, even if they do have some commitments to meet. Plus a lot of guys will want to play for Rex if he has another good year.

  66. avatar Randy says:

    NICE MOVE!!!

We have Edwards and Cotchey playing with Coles playing the slot until Holmes comes back in Week 5.Makes since that Mike T called asking about Owens right before bringing back Coles.

    • avatar Bent says:

Hmmm…a lot of people have reacted by saying “at least it isn’t TO”. I wonder if they had no intention of signing TO, but instead floated their interest so that the Coles move would be more positively received. Wouldn’t be the first time they’ve deliberately “managed expectations”.

      • avatar Brendan says:

Where’s Hank? He’s usually all over these conspiracy theories. And he would’ve taken much heat off of me these past two days.

        • avatar NY Smoker says:

Brendan – I’m guessing I’m partially responsible for the “heat” you speak of. I’m just passionate about the Jets and football and I love to argue.

I appreciate differing opinions as they make things interesting and make people think outside the box.

          • avatar Brendan says:

No worries, man. Football is a highly emotional sport (for fans just as much as players) so I never take anything on here personally.

I know I can ruffle some feathers with my approach on here, so sometimes I just have to take a step back and remember we’re all on the same side.

I’m not sure how long you’ve been posting (I think you’re new?) but if you don’t know who Hank is, he’s as divisive as I’ve been on the Brunell/Coles signings, multiplied over a few times. I just bring him up in times where someone brings up a Tanny conspiracy because he’s not a fan, to put it nicely.

          • avatar Bent says:

Appreciate you guys keeping it respectful.

Hope you can both join the TJB Chat we are planning for tomorrow.

          • avatar NY Smoker says:

I’ve posted here and there under different names, but just started posting frequently this week. The site I used to frequent is blocked at work and I have nothing to do this week so this site is keeping me sane.

          • avatar Brendan says:

Bent, if you seriously even need to ask if I’ll take part in a Friday afternoon TJB chat (been too long) than I may need to find a new blog. Those seriously got me through many a crappy (code for “hungover”) Friday last year.

        • avatar Bent says:

I’m not sure where Hank stands on Coles, because he claimed that they dumped him unceremoniously, and yet here he is working out for a job for a fraction of the money they were rightly unprepared to give him.

I’ve been picturing Hank showing up here, looking around and seeing that everything looks different, then saying “this isn’t the jets blog” and leaving again, such as one might do if a bar had an overnight refit.

          Come back to us, Hank!

  67. avatar Marvel says:

The Sanchez era has begun .. We will never have a losing season so long as we have the Sanchez/Rex combo .. Ok maybe we won’t we elite for the next 10 plus seasons but we will be at the door step of greatness for most of them ..

    • avatar Brendan says:

I’m with you here. The Jets finally have a franchise QB and a franchise HC to go with him. It’s about time and I’m just as excited for the future as Marvel.

  68. avatar NY Smoker says:

Sanchez has a lot to prove still IMO.

  69. avatar Marvel says:

Lmao … Hank would turn this into a Mangini vs the World debate ..

  70. avatar belvey631 says:

Off topic, my friend missed the Hard Knocks preview last night. Anyone have link to it? Also funny how during preview they showed clips from last years HK. Did you see the close up on LC? Who knew.

  71. avatar Marc says:

I hate this new format… but i like the signing!

  72. avatar Jets69 says:

    What number will he wear?

  73. this is crazy if you follow the convo and then someonw replies after you’ve read it your lost! this format is weird..foget it

  74. How much could it hurt to have Lavern back?

  75. This tells me that clowney must stink!

  76. avatar DMazz says:

I loved having LC in our WR corp. I think he is better as a receiver than Clowney and this will make our WR’s the best in the game when all in the lineup.

  77. there wont be alot of pressure on coles to perform in fact there will be pretty much no pressure for him at all…anything he brings is a plus…i dont mind him coming back, the only thing is that he might take away from the development of other players…clowney and brad smith…all in all though i think its a plus to have him back on the team for a 3rd go around

  78. avatar JetMetVet says:

I’m just happy someone wants to retire a Jet around here.

Happy to have ya back. Solid, dependable. 3rd down, need a quick slant? Badda bing. Done deal.

  79. not bad maybe he can teach clowney how to toughen up and good replacement for holmes during his suspension…lc was in my opinion one of my favorite jets and i couldnt even be mad when he left for the redskins since snyder gave him one of the craziest signing bonuses ever at that time

  80. avatar Joe S. says:

Clowney only plays well in August.

During the season he can’t get open against #1 DS’s

  81. avatar Joe S. says:

Welcome Home LC! I can’t wait to see you work with Mark on Sunday’s.

Mark and LC will hook up for a ton of 1st downs this season!

    You all Shall see!

  82. avatar KenEB says:

Lavernues needs to stay healthy through the first 4 weeks (while Santonio is serving his suspension) and prove he is more valuable than Clowney. A willingness to play special teams would certainly help his cause as well.

  83. avatar Super T says:

Much, much better signing than T.O.

  84. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Hated when we traded away Santana Moss to get back Coles. This time, though, we’re not giving anyone up to get him. But this time, he’s more than a bit over the hill. Can’t wait till Bluntonio is back in week 5.

    • avatar Bent says:

They had no choice but to trade Moss. If you recall, his contract was up for renewal and they couldn’t afford him (Jordan, Ferguson and McKenzie were all cap casualties that year).

He had also stopped going over the middle and simply ran straight out of bounds on nearly every kick return.

He bounced back with a decent postseason, but it was a lousy effort that year and since they were otherwise going to lose him for nothing, it was smart to get value for him, especially with someone who was a much better fit with Pennington.

      • avatar Ben Nevis says:

        Bent—

Yes, Coles might have been a better fit with Pennington, but that’s more of a reflection on Chad’s weaknesses as a QB than anything else: CP didn’t have the arm to captalize on having a receiver as dynamic and hell-fire fast as Moss.

If you look honestly at the two WRs, Bent, you have to concede that Moss had way the higher potential upside when that trade went down. That’s what I thought when it happened, and now it’s much more obvious.

Moss had the potential to be the bigger threat than Coles at the time of the trade, and indeed he did become the bigger threat. Teams feared him. No team ever feared Coles in quite the same way.

LC spent an awful lot of his time with the Jets catching third-down passes that were too short for a first down.

        • avatar Bent says:

Even if that’s the case (and Moss put in a terrible effort and went backwards that year, so I’m not sure I could agree about his potential at the time), it’s irrelevant because they couldn’t afford Moss and they could afford Coles.

It didn’t prove to be a great trade, but at the time, it was about the best they could do, other than let Moss walk for nothing the following year.

I’m not saying Coles was any better, but he definitely put more effort in than Moss did in 2004.

            Bent—

If the Jets couldn’t afford to pay Moss, but could afford to pay Coles, it was because Moss even then was clearly the player who was more valuable, with the higher potential upside. Obviously, the Skins saw it that way, and they were right.

Moss clearly (it was clear to me, clear to Washington) had the potential to become a true #1 WR. And that indeed is what he became. Coles had great hands, but spent an inordinate amount of his career on the injury list.

You say it didn’t turn out to he a great trade. What I’m saying is that this should have been clear to the Jets at the time. I’m just a fan, and I saw it (in fact, I remember telling a buddy of mine that this trade was nuts, that Moss had the potential to be one of the best WRs in the league.)

All of which is to say, I wish we had never traded Moss for Coles. That’s what I thought at the time, that’s what I think today.

            • avatar Bent says:

I fully understand. Personally, I hated Moss after the lousy effort he put in that year (and it takes a lot for me to lose patience with a current player), so at the time I was definitely all for it.

Keeping Moss was never an option though, you understand that, right? It was part of their efforts to get under the cap. So, you may not have liked trading for Coles (and were right not to) but Moss had to go.

Moss has been injured plenty too btw and I’d stop short of calling him one of the best WRs in the league.

Ultimately, I can see why they did it. What other choice did they have?

          • avatar Ben Nevis says:

            Bent—

I didn’t say Moss WAS one of the best receivers in the league, I said that at the time he was traded to DC, I told a buddy of mine that he had the POTENTIAL to be one of the best receivers in the league.

And, yes, I can understand the cap issues, but, as you know, that is all a matter of priorities: you make room for the players you see as your core. You dump players you see as expendable. I’m arguing that the Jets should have seen Santana as a future core player, not traded for Coles, and dumped whoever else they needed to dump to satisfy their cap restrictions. SM’s potential was that obvious, even back then.

          • avatar Bent says:

You were certainly right about his potential. No disputing that from me.

I think you underestimate how dire the cap situation was back then. They were 25m over, so they had to make multiple cuts and then replaced McKenzie, Jordan, Ferguson with cheaper replacements. As it happens, the team already did not have enough depth to cope with a few injuries, so retaining Moss really wouldn’t have helped. even if he had the sort of resurgence he did in Washington, which I – having lost patience with him over the course of that season – wasn’t expecting at the time of the deal anyway. I honestly don’t think retaining him was a feasible option, but I understand your reasons for not liking the Coles trade, as I’m sure you see the wisdom behind some of my reasons for being okay with it.

          • avatar Ben Nevis says:

Okay, Bent, yes, I can see that the cap restrictions were complicated and severe, and, yes, I can see your point here.

And I think you can see mine: that Moss had the potential to be a true #1 WR. And that picking up Coles (especially in exchange for Santana) was not a good football move.

Have to say that this time around, at least we’re not giving up anything (or any player) to get Coles. He seems to be an insurance policy, a third WR for the first four games. And, if that’s what this is, it’s possible that it could work out, with Coles in the slot for the first quarter of the regular season.

But from week 5 on, Coles would have to be our fourth WR, and wouldn’t be seeing very much field time at all. So the question is: is the cost of Coles small enough to justify using him for only four games?

I don’t know. I’m hoping that there’s little guaranteed money in the Coles deal, and I’d like to have LC compete with Clowney and Allison in camp and in the preseason, and see which one of the three wins the third WR job for the first four games.

I think Clowney and Allison have more—much more—potential upside than does Coles. But LC might be the best option we’d have at slot for the first four games, if Cotch & Braylon are our #1 & #2 WRs.

            • avatar Bent says:

I’m almost certain there wouldn’t be much guaranteed money in the Coles deal. However, if he is cut midseason, his salary for the year will have already become guaranteed (provided he was on the opening day roster, which obviously he would be).

I thought Coles was done after the first game last year, but he didn’t have as bad of a year as I expected. If they get him, it could pay off, but I’m not that excited.

          • avatar Ben Nevis says:

I agree, Bent: I’m not that excited about this move, either.

As for the hope that there’s very little guaranteed money in the deal, my point was that if Clowney or Allison can beat out Coles (for the third WR spot for the first four games) in camp and/or the preseason, then we can just cut the strings with LC, at very little cost.

But, yes, if Coles does win the third WR job (for the first four games), then we’d have to pay him a full season’s wages for a quarter season’s work.

And, yes, I agree: LC didn’t have that bad a season last year. Of the three—Clowney, Allison and Coles–LC obviously has the best hands (and, of course, the most experience shedding DBs and getting open), so he could prove to be the best option for our early season #3 WR.

Clowney and Allison must be just extremely unimpressive. I mean really? Coles? This guy is so selfish and SO not a team player. He is a poor mans diva and was NEVER a #1`. Why can’t Cotchery start opposite of Edwards and put Clowney, Smith and Allison in the rotation until Santonio gets back? This makes zero sense. I do not understand why Cotchery always gets a back seat.

      CA Jet Fan—

I don’t think Coles (if we were to sign him) would be starting over Cotchery. Coles would have to be our third WR, after Braylon and Cotch, until week 5, when Coles (if he’s still in green-and-white by then) becomes our fourth WR, after Bluntonio, Braylon and JC.

But if the Jets do sign Coles, it doesn’t look good for the Clown, or for Allison.

  86. avatar CA Jet Fan says:

Why can’t we stop all this crap with Brunell and Coles and garbage like that? Sign Revis, Harris and Mangold already!!!

    NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  88. Excellent number 4 option. He can’t seem to stay away can he? Every time he leaves he just seems to feel the pull back to the Jets.

  89. Much better than signing T.O. he won’t demand playing time, and he will make the most of the playing time he does it.

I’m surprised by how many people would like to settle for less while Holmes is our for “only” the first four games.

That span has us against the ravens patriots and dolphins. At the end of the season a win or loss in any of those games could be the difference between winning the division, winning a wildcard spot or even winning a higher seed with bye.

I’d bring in Coles for the depth, he gives us a better chance of winning in my opinion.

CA jets fan. u r rite, the jets should b signing harris, revis, and mangold. These 3 players are the future for the jets. maybe mike and rex know wat they r doing. they will probably sign them in the mid season
