Roster Countdown: #78 Wayne Hunter

by Bassett on July 29th, 2010 at 2:04 pm

hunterPosition: Offensive Line
Height / Weight: 6’5” 320 lbs.
Age: 29 / Experience: 7
College: Hawaii

Analysis: Chemistry is key on the O-Line, but talent is pretty good too.  Generally backup offensive linemen only see the field when a starter is injured, but OC Brian Schottenheimer, in swiping a page from the Dolphins Wildcat offense two years ago, starting using extra linemen as tight ends in their “Seminole” offense … or “Wild Pig” as Mangini used to joke.  It’s a genius stroke, in using players like Turner who don’t do much other than special teams.  It also builds in some familiarity with the blocking schemes and running with the first unit.

Still, Hunter played well in his role as a backup lineman and extra blocker, but I don’t think he’s the sort of player that the Jets are looking to hand the keys to eventually.  In the short spans where he has had to play at Tackle, it’s not been all wine & roses.

2010 Projection: Hunter isn’t going anywhere, he’s the team’s best backup lineman, but if pressed into service for more than a game as a starter, might spell trouble for the Jets line and the team might have to adjust some protection schemes should he need to play extensively.

That’s why I can’t understand why they just released Fanneca outright. They still had to pay him, so why not keep him on the team as insurance for at least this year to make sure we have the right replacement.

  2. “Wayne Hunter is an elligible receiver on this play”. For those of you who were at the Week 17 game against Cincy, how many times did we hear this lmao

I would have loved to have kept Fanneca for one more year and put Duccasse in this role for a year to transition him from D1AA to the pros and teach him both the tackle and guard positions

Faneca’s pass blocking is terrible, and with the team looking to pass more, that was the one thing that probably did him in. that being said, i see Vlad as the eventual replacement for Woody, not Faneca. I think he has the body of a RT, at 6-5 330 he is huge as a guard and i wonder if he is athletic enough to pull (he has great feet, though, and should be a better pass blocker than Faneca either way). Also considering Sanchez is only 6-2, do we really want a 6-5 330 giant standing in front of him on short passes? i think our ideal LG is more of a 6-1 bowling ball who has quick feet in the passing game and athleticism to pull in the run game

Met Wayne in Aruba… great guy, he took some time to entertain me with some good jets convo

Seriously, where is Hank? Just a few days ago he told me I was drinking kool aid, because I didn’t think Brick was “several notches below Joe Thomas and Jake Long.”

Wonder why D’Brick didnt get an All-Pro nod. I think he is going to be the new version of Winston Hill. Who will be great for a long time, but not be flashy and standout from others.

To think D Harris was 3 votes from being 1st team All-Pro and he didnt even make the Pro Bowl
