Breaking: Rex Ryan Gets Two Year Extension

by Bassett on July 30th, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Jay Glazer just reported on Twitter that Rex Ryan has been given a two year extension to his contract, adding to his existing four year deal which would mean the son of Buddy is signed by the Jets through 2014.

UPDATE: Mike Tannenbaum was extended as well through 2014 and was finalized back in June.

  1. I’m not a fan of this move by Rex. He should have made sure his guys (Revis, Mangold, Harris) were taken care of first before he accepted an extension.

  2. avatar Neville says:

Too soon. Too many other salary issues too.
I love the guy, but come on, the focus should be on extending Mangold, Harris, and Revis.

  3. avatar daddybe1 says:

Ok now I think this was a psl move considering most jet fans love rex

  4. avatar Jmattera says:

    Mike T got 5 years.

  5. avatar stewballz says:

    Johnny,

The coaches salary doesn’t count towards the team salary cap so it doesn’t really effect them and if it does then they aren’t worried about anything but themselves.

    • Stew- This has nothing to do with salary cap. If you’re a guy who everybody know is deserving a contract extention (Revis, Mangold and Harris) and you Boss who has your back cuts the line to get his it makes you feel slighted.

Rex says he loves these guys like family , like his own kids. Thinks of his kids in line to get ice cream from the ice cream truck and then he cuts the line to get his first. They may still get theirs but as the father you put your kids interest first.

  6. avatar Dave says:

Tannenbaum also extended – five years.

  7. Did they HAVE to do this NOW?!?!?!?

Extend Rex when he has 3 years remaining? Fine, no problem. But a wink & nod deal would have been just fine for now…

Why couldn’t they have worked out the deal, sign the papers or not, and leave it all on Tanny’s desk until DR’s deal is finalized?

This is just one more point for Team Revis to look at that we just do not need until DR is safely signed and in camp.

Fine, after DR’s signing, announce that you’ve signed the entire state of Rhode Island to huge contracts… Who’d care then? We’d be playing football.

    I just don’t get Tanny sometimes, I really don’t.

    • avatar Bassett says:

looks like the tanny extension was back in June.

      • See? THIS is all Tanny has left to learn in order to become a elite-level GM — just learn to keep his mouth shut on any and all contract talks until he’s ready to announce something. Then, “VOILA! Hey, it’s a contract — for xx years and xxx dollars.” And then we all go, “Cool!” and go on about our business.

Imagine how cool life would be if Tanny hadn’t made that giddy “re-work your contract” comment to DR, just as the football world (incl. Rex) were saying DR is All-Universe.

They could have popped up quietly in April and said, “Here’s $10 million, DR, you’ve earned it,” and been sooo far ahead of the game.

I like this move — when it seems as though things might be unsettled by holdouts or labor disputes, you now know that this team is solid at its foundation with Rex.

It also gives Jets fans a rallying point — in Rex We Trust. And that’s a signal to others going forward that, like Rex or not, this franchise should be relatively stable. And some of the most successful franchises in the NFL — the Colts, the Patriots, the Eagles, the Steelers — are because they are the most stable.

    • avatar billvv says:

+1. And the front office has a vote of confidence vs. player contract disputes.

    • avatar Harvlis says:

Totally agree. Rex guarantees that our defense will be awesome, for years to come. It is his attitude and style that will make the best of the free agents want to come play for the Jets. Although, I am not a huge fan of the Brunell deal — this move is a winner.

  9. avatar vbsiena says:

Good I <3 Tanny. He makes it all go.

  10. avatar jcjets says:

Glad its done, but this should’ve been be low on the priority list..

  11. avatar Jason says:

I never like these moves. Im as hopeful for the season as the next guy, but how many times do we see the year one coach come in and overachieve and then flounder after that? You cant wait to get rid of them, but there is no way out because of the contracts. I think this is a mistake and it also sends a bad message to the players. The Jets front office is telling them to play hard to get paid, but those same people have been rewarded with extensions based on the Colts pulling Peyton Manning in week 16. I think that its really unfair.

    • avatar NJets says:

I really don’t understand the complaints?

A part of building a good franchise is building continuity. This move doesn’t take money away from the players. Its probably a fixed expense Woody had in mind all along.

The move should also help retain players considering Rex is probably the most beloved coach in the league right now (by players).

If I were Revis, id be begging to stay with Rex till 2014. It wasn’t till Rex got to the Jets that the discussion of Revis as the best Corner in the Game left this Blog and infiltrated the mass media. I understand hes always been good, but Rex made him Elite.

To me this move is equally as important as a player signing. Players get injured, lose value, lose interest. But if a good coach is entrenched in the franchise and in the system, we will be good for a long time.

      • it’s not that we don’t like Rex and Tanny, I love them actually. It’s just that the players should be taken care of first. The timing of all this is a problem. The best defensive player on the team and in the league for that matter might not even be in camp because of a contract then the GM and Coach get a new contract. I don’t think this will boad will with Revis.

  12. avatar Curtis says:

Want to see the players get their deals done. However, Rex is a big part of the team, glad to see him extended

  13. avatar Dave75 says:

    It’s bittersweet. Pay Revis!!!

  14. hey, i bet rex didn’t get a massive signing bonus, so there’s the diffrence

  15. avatar Crazy Eddie says:

There is also no 30% rule for Rex’s contract.

  16. Look I absolutely love Rex, Tanny has also done everything in his power to improve the team and for the most part has done a great job drafting since he has been here. The only problem I have with this is that the Jets have other priorities to address. I know Revis is getting his contract eventually and I know Mangold will as well, but David Harris BETTER get a contract at the end of this year. The guy is a class act, haven’t heard a peep out of his mouth about his contract situation. He’s one of the best MLB’s in the league right behind Patrick Willis IMO. I love Rex and Tanny but the organization had to take care of these core players first whom all of us Jets fans want to see here for a very long time. As much as I love Mr. T and Rex, in the end the players are the ones who have to go out and execute, therefore this was a mistake, but I’m still hopeful that all 3 of these guys will get their contracts by next year.

  18. avatar tish says:

The timing for Rex is curious, where was Rex going? As for Mr. T, the Brunell signing must have put it over the top.

    • avatar JayM says:

why all the hate for signing the coach and GM which MrT was already signed in June

    • I wonder if Hard Knocks plays into the timing of Revis’s contract. Do they make him miss some time for an interesting story line. Maybe his contract is all but done and that’s why his agent has gone quiet.

      • avatar ramble914 says:

I don’t think the team would mess around with player relations just to give HBO a good story line.

        • Just the opposite, Johnny.

They don’t want this to be a storyline on HKs. They have so many other stories they want to sell, they don’t want it all commandeered by the holdout of their best player.

Besides, if DR is out 1 day, he’s out for the season.

There are too many intertwined issues within his current contract that he gets screwed on, so “In for a dime; In for a Dollar.”

He’s either fully in or fully out.

Pray hard for a quick contract, Jets’ boys and girls, or he’s out until 2012.

          • avatar Bent says:

If he’s out one day he’s out for the season? Don’t agree with that.

$16,000 per day fines by the way.

Holding out does cost him the guarantees after one day, but the accrued year cutoff is August 11th, so if he does hold out, a return then is possible. He may only be due 1m this year, but that’s still a million, it still helps his reputation and bargaining power to perform well and also 2m of his 2012 money depends on him making the Pro Bowl.

Holding out one day is a huge risk, but there are still a ton of reasons to return if be chooses to take that step.

I thought that Revis’ agent going off twitter was a step in the right direction but I didnt want to say something and jinx it…well I guess I just did anyway

  20. avatar Electric Ham says:

Contracts for Revis and Rex are completely unrelated these arguments are poor. Another great move for the Jets this offseason in Rex and Mr. T we trust

    • Ham

Have you ever been in line for a raise, promised one, have your boss tell you and everyone else that you are the greatest at what you do and then your boss gets rewarded and your still waiting for your raise. If you were the employee you would feel slighted.

I don’t have a problem with Rex or Tanny getting extentions. But as a gesture of good will you take care of the employee first then the management.

      • avatar Merc20 says:

Wasn’t he offered a contract? Does all the world have to wait until Revis is happy? I’m sure you’ll say ‘yes’… but apparently you’d be wrong…

        • Everyone agrees Revis, Mangold and Harris have outplayed their current contracts and should be given new contracts. They are are all under contract and can’t go anywhere until their contracts are up. Just like Rex and Tanny were under contract and couldn’t go anywhere.

I’m not aware of Rex or Tanny feeling they were under paid or out performing their contract. So the priority should be placed on the Revis, Mangold and Harris. Don’t be surprised if a player gets a bad taste in his mouth from this and it hurts the Jets in the long run.

  21. avatar James in TN says:

I look at it like this Rex got offered an extension, AND he took it. Revis got offered an extension, AND he declined. Duh, when the offer is fair you ACCEPT.

    WTG Rex!!!

  22. avatar MEL31602 says:

I don’t get the complaints about the timing. I don’t think the Jets meant for this to get out, but when Glazer reported it on twitter they figured they might as well announce it plus Tanny’s deal too. Plus like some of said Rex and Tanny don’t have to worry about the 30% rule and the other factors inhibiting a contract extension for Revis.

  23. avatar juunit says:

I’m pretty certain the multiple members of the Jets front office are capable of walking and talking at the same time. Heck, they can probably even chew gum during it all too! GO T. REX!

  24. avatar stewballz says:

    Johnny

Think of how it would look if news got out that Rex was offered an extension and turned it down.

    • Stew- He could easily say I’m under contract and plan on being here as long as they’ll have me, but we have other contracts that are a higher prioirty right now and I’d rather see resources spent on getting those deals done first.

  25. avatar DHarvey says:

There’s nothing to see here folks, just move along.

Now would someone pass me the popcorn please.

  26. avatar iJets says:

Rex and Mr T extensions do not bother me.

Mr T is doing what he is supposed to.

Rex is instilling Jets Pride (ex: Play like a Jet, KILL – keep it likeable and learnable) throughout the organization. Rex has been a breathe of fresh air and inspiring. What more do you want from your head coach???

  27. avatar DMazz says:

I haven’t been more sure about a coach in quite some time (Parcells)than I am with Rex. He’s going to lead the Jets to the Super Bowl…soon

  28. avatar James in TN says:

Just be glad they didn’t extend Schotty.
