LC Signing is Official

by Bassett on July 30th, 2010 at 5:37 pm

Lisa Zimmerman is reporting that the Jets have made official the signing of WR Laveranues Coles.   The deal is a one-year contract.

Rich Cimini has some more details, like the pay and a quote from Coles knowing he might not be with the Jets for more than those first four games.

well at lest he wont have any trouble learning the playbook

Laveranues Coles signs with #Jets, tells ESPNNewYork.com he may not be here for the duration.

Nothing wrong with this at all. He may not be Andre Johnson but he’ll do fine as the 4th WR who is occasionally brought out onto the field and who probably won’t have more than 25 catches all season.

  5. avatar E. Weeks says:

If this is Coles final run, I certainly hope he’ll make the most of every oppertunity he gets.

  6. avatar Dylan says:

I think Clowney makes the roster. Coles even said that he isn’t expecting to be here for more than four games. Clowney does need to prove that he can contribute on special teams though.

I like this signing, they needed to fill the void that was left by Holmes suspension, and there really wasn’t any truly better options out there. Coles knows the system, and can play multiple reciever positions. Sanchez should love a guy who goes after the ball like coles does. I’m glad he is only a band aid though.

  8. avatar bilal says:

wait a second- i thought coles was suppose to be a me first guy who wouldnt ever wanna be second fiddle to cotchery? but hes willing to come for only 4 games- that doesnt make sense…

    • avatar simplysimon2 says:

800 grand for 4 games (vets’ minimum) is not a bad pay day for a guy who 5 minutes ago was unemployed.

    • avatar E. Weeks says:

When the realization hits you that your career is nearing the end of the line, depending on the person, you would take what you could get for that last hurrah, that one final chance to win a championship which, Coles has yet to do in his professional career.

So I could certainly see why he is willing to sign on.

  9. avatar jsa says:

Reassuring to see Coles saying right things, seems to understand this may be just for four games.

  10. iwant him here for the season because clowney will never be more than speed…. and braylon and santonio have that covered

  11. avatar BurbankJetsFan says:

Good backup plan. Coles gets more face time on the ‘Knocks, or should I say chest time cause they show the same Marvin Lewis rant over and over. Still, I like the insurance policy, he’ll be healthy for at least four games.

  12. avatar Harvlis says:

At first, I thought this was a good idea but, I think Clowney, Brad Smith, et al, could have held the fort down. Let’s hope that LC does so well that they keep him around for the season.

  13. avatar JUSTWIN says:

Was he better off with the deal he had before leaving for the Bengals? I know he left for more money but I thought he had a couple of years left on his contract when he left a year ago.

    • avatar Bent says:

He turned down 6m guaranteed from the Jets and got a 4 year 28m deal with 9m guaranteed from Cincy. He lasted just a year, so he collects 9m instead if 6m and returns to the Jets on the cheap.

      He made out pretty well!

  14. avatar TJBfan says:

I like it, very happy with our wr set

  15. avatar JUSTWIN says:

    Thanks Bent

  16. avatar jet says:

we have the best 4th option in the league if you look at it that way

  17. avatar Marvel says:

Lol .. As long as he didn’t spend his money like MC Hammer he should be fine .. It’s not that hard to stay rich .. Unless your Eddie Curry ..

  18. avatar JUSTWIN says:

He was ranked 2nd best WR with the Bengals last year.

  19. avatar Randy says:

To me, this is best situation Coles could be in right now.

1-He didn’t have many options out there willing to give him a chance.
2-He will be getting fair amount of playing time in the slot.
3-He has a chance to prove he still has something left in the tank for other teams to look into.
4-He is playing for a team that is concidered one of the favorites to win the Superbowl. Also gives him a chance to win a Championship that he wanted playing with the Jets.

  20. avatar Randy says:

More importantly, I cant wait to abuse people in Madden with Coles playing the Slot lol.I just hope Madden keeps Holmes on the Jets roster and doesn’t remove him from the team based on the suspension.

  21. avatar JUSTWIN says:

It’s crazy when you think back to this time last year our #1 left and we were looking at Stuckey #2 and Clowney or B smith as 4 and 5. Hats off to Mr T.

    • avatar Randy says:

Good point.Cotchery will be our number 3 by seasons end and he was our number 1.Edwards and Holmes were all trades to this team over the last 12 months. In reality when you look at things..

The Jets traded a 3rd Rd Pick and a 5th Rd Pick and got back Braylon Edwards,Santonio Holmes and Laveranues Coles.

Thats a heck of a 1 sided trade if you ask me.WAY TO GO MIKE T

  22. avatar roof says:

the jets and coles are like billy martin and steinbrenner. coles is the steinbrenneri n the siuation

  23. avatar k.c. says:

    NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  24. avatar Super T says:

Two thumbs up on this one! MUCH better fit over TO. Already familiar with the organization, plays with heart, and doesn’t have to refer to himself in the 3rd person.

  25. another reason why this is a good move is coles seems to get along with qb’s look how quick him and chad were on the same page plus patrick ramseys best years was when coles was his wr plus even having a pretty good repoire with farve even though they didnt have much of a training camp with each other so this move can only help sanchez i think

  26. by game 5 of this season our wr’s are going to be edwards, holmes, cotchery, coles, and b.smith who can do a little of everything plus clowney… throw in keller and tomlinson who can catch out of the backfield i would say we are set up nicely on offense this year…we gotta pray that tomlinson has a little gas left and greene dont get injured its hard not to be optimistic right now

  27. avatar Lysol says:

I missed LC last year. Maybe he is the last piece of the puzzle

  28. avatar neauone says:

Old man Cole’s is still better than all the talented receivers riding the pine. He will be someone who will demand respect.

  29. avatar eboozer says:

Lavernues has not been the same since he was knocked out in a very violent head to head spear job by a Miami linebacker who will remain unnamed. After that hit LC never fully recovered. He’s lucky to be alive. Never been a better Jet.

  30. avatar nick says:

Couldn’t be happier. Yeah there was always contract drama with LC. But it NEVER showed on the field. He was as tough a jet as anybody as any WR we’ve had.

  31. avatar DMazz says:

Great signing LC was a great guy in the clubhouse and can really help Sanchez on 3rd downs.

  32. avatar tazzelrik says:

LC was my favorite JET for a short while.

When we spread 4 wide with Santonio Holmes and Laveranues Coles in the slots …..
    OOOOHHHHH baby!

  33. avatar WW85 says:

I wanted to see Clowney get a shot. But LC does NOT drop passes. He will make the most of his ops.

  34. avatar MrJetGreen says:

The only question is whether he will call Rex Ryan a Penguin.

  35. avatar Reprocity says:

He’s like the Vinny of WR’s…
