Will Pool Make a Big Splash?

by Bassett on July 31st, 2010 at 10:00 am

Cannonball!!!!

Dennis Dillon of The Sporting News compiled a list of ten players who he thinks will have an impact year with their new teams.  Amidst names like Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson, Ravens receiver Anquan Boldin and Bengals rookie tight end Jermaine Gresham, he adds one Jet (and one former Jet, Thomas Jones).

Brodney Pool, S, Jets
Coach Rex Ryan says Pool, a former Browns player, has a chance to win the free safety spot, left open when Kerry Rhodes was traded to Arizona, and join arguably the best secondary in the league.

“He’ll be out there with the No. 1 defense in football and starting, so I think he’s going to be a major contributor,” Ryan said. “This guy has a lot of ability in the back end, and I think he’s going to make a lot of plays for us.”

Making the point that since he’s joining such a good unit, Pool doesn’t have to be great. Just being solid will go a long way.

Old-school pinstriped Magic cap tip thanks to Joe in Orlando.

Actually 2 former Jets on the list, Lito Sheppard is on it also.

I’m intrigued to hear how this donovan warren fellow pans out. Not like I got anything against the Pool, to the contrary I swam for 12 years (try the veal!), but wasn’t Warren a projected 1-2 rounder until he had a horrible 40 time?
Either way I agree that he just needs to be solid.
And Lito Sheppard wasn’t really on the team last year, he just got paaaid.

  3. This defense looks so sick. And im happy with the offense as well. I don’t really expect Ladainian Tomlinson to be a huge contributor…but his veteran leadership can really help Shonn Greene mature into a solid back. Look for LT to get carries on 3rd downs.

I LOVE our WR corp, O-line, QB, and running game should have a good season.

As for the defense…just look at the name on the roster. Nuff said. Not to mention Rex Ryan is a blitzing King…which I love!!

I’m excited gentlemen!! Lets get the season started Bassett!

Well to be fair if he isn’t as good he’ll stick out more to the fans if he’s the one messing up the most plays. But I suppose in the end it’s all about the team effort, so as long as he doesn’t totally screw up we should be fine? I’m just wary of that aggressive nature he supposedly has. I don’t want him running through tackles seeing how he’s the last line of defense. Even if it means he’ll make the occasional spectacular flattening, I’d rather him be boring but consistent.

Good post. I agree, and I’m hopeful he will. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a lot of people complaining about his performance this year, even if he performs as you describe.

      As long as they win…

        Hey bent:

        No.7 Just signed $50 Million 5/yr $26 Million Gteed.

        Just saying

        • avatar Bent says:

That makes Gholston look like a bargain. Yes, rookie deals are out of control.

It still shouldn’t have any bearing on the Revis situation though.

        • It IS a bit eye-popping, however, to see a 1st Round rook being given the same approx. $10 mil/yr. that DR’s agents have floated as a compromise # for a “top 5″ NFL star who was also a 1st Rounder.

Man, there’s just too damn much money sloshing around in this game…

And I guess the silver lining is if he does keep his over-aggressive nature we’ll get to see some guys get flattened.

        • avatar Bent says:

I don’t really get where this idea that he’s a heavy hitter comes from. I know lots of sources have been calling him that, but it isn’t how I’d describe him. He’s more of a disciplined coverage guy. The last thing we need is for him to try and be something he isn’t!

          • avatar juunit says:

Well I’ve got no clue, I’m just going by what I’ve read about him. Maybe you’re right and he isn’t this all-or-nothing type player. I haven’t seen him play, or at least if I have I wasn’t really paying attention to Pool (who?). So I’ll hold judgment and hope that what I’ve read about him is wrong.

          • avatar Bent says:

Yeah, there was a quote from an ex-GM that described him that way and everyone seems to have taken it and run with it. He’s never been like that whenever I’ve seen him and it certainly wasn’t his reputation as recently as the last year or two.

            So there’s hope! Hallelujah!

  5. Brian,

Just a side note. May we revisit the issue of underbars for links in posts?

This post is a good example of what we were mentioning about the redesign. Not all the BF styled text is linked.

It’s just really confusin for all of us, as to which text is a link and which is not. I assume it’s more so for folks with any kind of visual things to deal with.

The editor in me rears its ugly head…

    Thanks!
