Woody Johnson Discusses Darrelle Revis

by Lisa Zimmerman on August 2nd, 2010 at 6:55 pm

During the break between practices today owner Woody Johnson arrived in the press box to address the media. Of course all questions had to do with Darrelle Revis.  First and foremost, his feelings on Revis not being in camp.

“Am I disappointed? Yes,” Johnson said. “I would like everything to be clear sailing to the Super Bowl.  The lines of communication are totally open. I’m open. If Darrelle wants me to come see him, I’ll do it.”

Johnson reiterated more than once that the main sticking point is the total compensation. However, he made several comments that seemed to insinuate that it was solely Revis’ team holding things up (in addition to out).

“The main point is total compensation. I’d love to sit down and negotiate. We can be flexible. We drafted him, so he’s our guy. We love Darrelle. I think willing parties can sit down and come up with something,” Johnson said.

However, how flexible can they be? Johnson debunked theories that the Jets may not have enough money to pay upfront, however, Johnson’s answer to that: “We’ve never had an inability through resources, through lack of resources, to sign who we want.”

Again, hate to say it, but I don’t think we’re going to see Revis for a while.

Afternoon practice was rather quiet. Vernon Gholston got a rise out of the crowd after batting down a passs from Mark Sanchez during 11-on-11s.

Still getting used to seeing Bryan Thomas in number 58 after he and Jason Taylor brokered a deal with Taylor coming out owning 99.

Laveranues Coles also switched his number from 85 to 19 sometime between the morning and afternoon practices. David Clowney of course is wearing Coles’ original number 87.

Vlad Ducasse and Matt Slauson continue to rotate at left guard.

After cutting wide receiver Britt Davis on Sunday, the Jets signed receiver Vic Hall who was at practice today and who caught a pass from Mark Brunell. Hall came out of the University of Virginia and was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Bears in April.

There’s one more shoe entry for you. After wearing his Chuck Taylor sneakers this morning – a 24-year-old tradition and that Bassett ran a photo of earlier today – Rex Ryan showed up at his midday press conference wearing a pair of green running shoes. For the afternoon practice he was in a pair of black and white high-tops. Three pairs of shoes in one day. I, on the other hand, have been in the same pair since I left my room this morning. Just saying.

Tune in tomorrow to see what exciting things may occur. And of course, tune in tonight to SNY’s Geico Sportsnite.

  1. Classy move from the Wood. Not many owners would do something like this. Great stuff here Woody.

Just pay the man. Not paying Revis is a mistake.

  3. if you read between the lines of what woody is saying i think revis is def getting traded to the dolphins for a 7th rounder and 2 marc anthony cds

Just a gut feeling, but I have a feeling this issue could be behind us in a week.Wishful thinking I guess, but I have a strong feeling we will hear about Revis having a better understanding by the weekend and they will have a verbal agreement come Monday,Tuesday..

RIGHT IN TIME FOR MADDEN 11 :-)

My take – he’s saying “we can pay”, but “we’re not paying Al Davis money”. In that regard, he’s 100% correct (IMHO). The problem here is that someone has to eat humble pie, at some stage. Either Revis accepts less money than Asomugha or the Jets makes Revis the highest paid CB ever. To be honest with you, I’m kind of shocked that it got to this point, and the longer it goes on, the harder that pie is to eat!

Im in the middle on this whole DR thing. On one hand he has a contract to live up to and should be in camp and let things work out he will eventually get paid and there wouldn’t be so much drama and hurt feelings ala Mangold and D brick. On the other hand the front office as a jet fan for many years has screwed up many of times and coverd there asses through the press and made themselves look good while making someone hard working and team oriented turn on the jets after seeking there payday. One hand DR is being a whiney little girl but on the other hand is the front office forcing him into this situation via controlled releases of information from the team to the media????????

    I hate this @#%!

Corect me if I’m wrorng. He’s already made 15M and he stood to make 21M more, with his original contract that he held out for. Now he is holding out for ???? more. Unless he wants to just throw money away he probably could’nt spent 35m the rest of his lifetime. It makes me laugh at these greedy pro players that hold out for the monopoly money they demand, when they could’nt spend it all in their lifetime. What’s the difference in making 50m or 75M or 100M. GREED!

Its not even about the money.I am begining to think Revis has the EGO about himself of becoming the best CB in the NFL and he wants to be paid the highest so their is no doubt in anyone elses mind that he is the best.Sounds greedy to me.

-He wants to be recognized as the best CB
-He wants to be the best player on the team
-He wants the fame(already has a commercial)
-He wants to be paid as the best CB
-He wants to win a Superbowl

In otherwards he wants the Jets to feel like without Revis they are nothing and with Revis they are Superbowl contenders.

Oh..here is Revis’ Needs in order

1-Recognized as the best CB in the NFL (Check)
2-Feel like the Jets need Revis more than he needs the Jets (Check)
3-Become the highest paid CB in the NFL(Stalled)
        4-Win a Superbowl(Depending on #3)

You know, to be fair, these guys are competitors – we ask them to compete to be the best in all aspects of the game. Strongest, fastest, smartest, hardest working, and when it comes to contract time, they’re competitive too.

  9. avatar eboozer says:

If Darelle wants Aso money, he needs to play out his contract, take a least one year of franchise tag, and then hit the FA market. if he keeps up his level of play he’ll get more than ASo in 4 years. If he wants a dewal now he must give a discount.

  10. avatar James in TN says:

Mevis needs a reality check. Take 10 mil per year for 3 years then revisit this, or sit out and make no money. Simple choice when you look at it.

  11. avatar Ferraro41 says:

I’m all for Revis getting as much as he can. No problem with that. But he shouldn’t be holding out. He has three years left on his deal. Mangold and Harris, important to the team in their own right, are in the LAST years of their respective deals, both want new contracts, yet they are at camp.

Revis should talk to Todd Bell. Bell was a safety for the Bears in the mid-80′s. Coming off a Pro Bowl year in 1984, he wanted a new deal and held out the entire season. Missed 15-1. Missed Super Bowl Shuffle. Missed getting the ring. Came back, had some injuries, and was never the same player.
