Jets Intensity Picks Up

by Lisa Zimmerman on August 3rd, 2010 at 1:48 pm

CORTLAND–There was a little more spark to practice this morning, which made Rex Ryan very happy.

“The competitive spirit was great out there,” he said. There were no punches thrown, just some jawing back and forth. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time. Especially since it’s supposed to be hot tomorrow.

Tight end Jeff Cumberland made his presence felt today with a few nice moves. He out-wrestled safety Emanuel Cook for the ball on one pass and had several other nice plays. He will compete with Matt Mulligan for a spot on the active roster.

The play of the day was made by David Clowney. Brodney Pool misjudged the ball, allowing Clowney to grab it — and with his speed, turn it into what would have likely been about an 80-yard touchdown. Don’t worry about Pool however, he had a great offseason and has lots of ability and versatility. Ryan mentioned today that Pool’s pickup was “under the radar.” They are happy to have him.

Ryan commented on Dustin Keller’s improvement as a blocker and joked that he is confident that Ben Hartsock will double his catches this year — from one to two.

Shonn Greene looks very solid. The power he brings is evident as he propels himself forward and pushes guys out of the way. After practice, Greene talked about how he has improved from last season to this one.

“I’m playing a lot faster than last year,” he said. “I can see what’s happening before it happens. I can maximize my talents now.”

The running back trio of Greene, LaDainian Tomlinson and Joe McKnight will be an interesting one. The three of them have completely different running styles, which the team should be able to use to its advantage. Tomlinson, while he may have lost a step, is still among one of the greats — and although his carries and production will be down, his mentoring of both Greene and McKnight will be invaluable.

Greene told me last year how much he learned from Thomas Jones and he has now attached himself to Tomlinson in a similar manner. A smart strategy for a young player.

As for day two of the Darrelle Revis holdout Ryan discussed how the situation is being handled within the team.

“We admit that if Darrelle is not here, it’s going to be difficult,” he said. “But by no means does that mean we’re not going to get it done. We’re still going to get it done. We gotta keep our eyes on the prize. We’ve got to hit the practice field with purpose every day.”

General manager Mike Tannenbaum plans to reach out to Revis’ team in the next day or two and will offer the opportunity for Revis to sit down with owner Woody Johnson, if he should be interested in doing that.

Just a special teams practice this afternoon. I will do my best to pull something compelling out of that.

i like the move by woody…nothing like a face to face meeting….

  2. avatar JetsFan4Life says:

Revis Holdout Conspiracy Theory, produced by the Huffington Post, co-directed by Michael Moore and Oliver Stone

Act II – the “meeting” with Woody…

Michael Moore directs the camera to pan in on Woody’s glasses and visor as he let’s out an evil chuckle while huddled with Schwartz and Mevis, “You just sit tight there Darelle, we need you to hang out at home for another week or two so we can convince the fans to buy PSLs to pay your salary, plus for each day your out HBO is giving us an extra $1M on which we’ll give you 20% if the nielsen ratings are over…”

Ollie Stone then gets the camera to pan over on Darelle and his posse who are sitting back playing videos, voices in the background as they fade out, “Hey D, you share are Da Man in Madden 11!”

    • Too funny. Clever…

    • avatar James in TN says:

What if Bill Bellicheat is tampering with Mevis?

      • avatar JetsFan4Life says:

Then Ollie and Mike bring in Sexy Rexy in KSK mode to kick some butt…

      • avatar Bent says:

That would be awesome. If they were caught doing that, the fines would be enormous. Spygate x 10. I’m not kidding.

The picks lost would give them very little hope for the future and Belichick would probably retire in shame, if he wasn’t suspended or even banned for life.

You can’t tamper with another team’s star player while he’s still under contract, you just can’t.

Even if he didn’t get caught, the Jets still control Revis’ rights for three more years and if they traded him they’d do it in a way that kept him from their divisional rivals, so they would never be able to get him until 2013 at the earliest.

Im surprised Brett Favre retiring hasn’t been posted yet.Thats a huge blow to the Vikings and kind of dssapointing because I was really looking forward to having Brett Favre face the Jets this season.

On another note, the Jets schedule just got better.First was all these Ravens injuries prior to opening night and now this Favre news.

  4. avatar Brendan says:

Very happy to see Greene is attaching himself to Tomlinson like he did with Jones last year. LDT knows as much as anyone about being a complete RB, so his knowledge should really help the kid grow.

    • avatar Zartan says:

But Jones is a better teacher! not the better back.

      • avatar Brendan says:

How could you possibly know that? None of us have any idea what kind of mentor LDT is.

        • Shonne will be more than capable of taking over Jones’ spot (barring injury). That’s what we know and everyone else is afraid to admit. Learning from a HOF like LDT is such a huge benefit to him. Wow. The potential Greene has is unfathomable as we get deeper into the regular season. Chills! Oh and McKnight better scrape up whatever he can from LDT too…

  5. avatar tish says:

The distinction in running styles between the 3 RB’s is what every good backfield needs. What it also needs is a backup for this very vulnerable position. Since Greene should have the most carries, it is he who needs a backup the most. They need to bring someone in who has a similar skill set.
As for Favre, does anyone really believe it yet?

    • Farve? No.

3 RB’s? You’re absolutely right about having backup. But Schotty has to dial it up correctly. I remember many of us were ready to ring his neck on multiple occasions. Will he maximize our new running attack? Will the Run, Run, Pass, Punt series continue as frequently as last season? Sanchez v2 c’mon!

    • avatar billvv says:

I think John Connor will fill in nicely!

  6. avatar Randy says:

OMG I can’t believe how much hate the Jets are getting.I guess the majority of fans are tired of Analyst saying we have a chance to win the Superbowl.Check this thread out.

    http://www.prosportsdaily.com/forums/showthread.php?t=518524

90% of everybody is saying we are the most overated team in the NFL.What a joke. Can they admit that we surprised everyone when we went to the AFC Championship and had the Colts losing by halftime. They seem to forget about how we did in the playoffs where it matters most and only think of the regular season.I don’t really understand the Jet hate. They had the best defense and Running attack last season and went far in the playoffs. Now everyone gets upset about how they think we backed into the playoffs, but the only argument they can make is the Colts game. The Bengals were playing their starters in Week 17 and they only took players out of the game once we were blowing them out with Palmer in the game.

    • avatar Randy says:

Also everyone completely ignores how great Mark Sanchez looked in the playoffs. He looked better than Phillip Rivers in that Charger game and made Carson Palmer look like he was trying to play like Mark Sanchez. Not to mention Mark Sanchez was playing right up with Peyton Manning.

I actually like it because every week we win, I THRIVE on fans getting upset like when we win its the end of the world for them haha

    • avatar zep says:

but they are completly right if the colts didnt give us that game we wouldnt have made it to the play offs.

      • avatar Bent says:

Or the Jets might have won it anyway, which since the running game started to completely dominate the Colts defense before they removed any defensive starters was not beyond the realms of plausibility.

You’re right that this is the public perception though, which leads them to think the Jets might be overrated. However, my above point, plus all the close games they should have won, suggests that the opposite could be closer to the truth.

        • avatar Randy says:

And one 1 game that is completely ignored by everyone else besides Jets fans is that 2nd Miami game.We SHOULD have won that game had it not been for Ginn getting lucky. We outperformed them on offense and defense. But all Dolphin fans brag about is how they beat us twice and will do the same this year.

Thats like saying we had a gun pointed to someones head and walked away and they jumped us from behind and took advantage.

  7. avatar Harvlis says:

I am glad that Vernon Gholston is showing some emotion, so far. I think he has the ability. I would much rather see him crush people as a Jet than as a Dolphin, Bill, or Patriot. Go VG!

    • the only time I’ve seen ANYTHING out of Gholston is when he destroyed David Carr last year. I hope we see more of that this year I really do, but I just don’t see it.

    • avatar NY Smoker says:

Where did you get the idea he was showing any emotion?

      • avatar Harvlis says:

He has blocked a pass, sacked the QB, and given his blockers fits, from what I have read. That is more than he has done in two seasons.

        • avatar Bent says:

He has opened up the last two training camps in similar fashion (I don’t know about the “giving blockers fits” part, but I don’t know who said that), but he had been recording sacks in the first few days, then went quiet.

Let’s see if he can sustain it past the first week this time. Fingers crossed!

          • avatar JetsFan4Life says:

Someone tweeted earlier today that he had a sack today (but playing vs. 2′s) on Brunell

          • avatar Harvlis says:

If you go to the New York Jets website, there is an article about Gholston. Of course, pre-season practice, against your own team, means squat. But, I would rather hear positive news about VG than the usual silence. As opposed to the haters, I am holding off on judging him. NY fans have no patience.

  8. avatar ramble914 says:

Where are all the twitter updates that we had yesterday?

  9. avatar Pino0317 says:

I think revis is a butthead for holding out. He must know that he will not make the same money as the kid from the raiders. I believe he should be paid well, but lets all be real if we let Al davis Dedicate the way we pay players then soemthing is seriously wrong with the NFL. Revis’s Agent is giving him really bad advice. He just gave up 20 million. Didn’t he say he needs to support his family. What 20 million isn’t enough. Players should be paid but when you start to get greedy then it’s time for a wake-up call. He still has three years left on his contract. If the jets wanted to they could really screw with him.

  10. Look Revis has gotta do what he’s gotta do…I’m not gonna talk about the guy’s money…this is football his carrer could be over from one minute to the next..This holdout means nothing, if he’s still holding out on Sept 12th..then i’ll be worried. Give the man his guaranteed money….

  11. avatar NJets says:

Id appreciate if Bent could confirm this, but from what Ive heard, Revis is essentially putting himself in a position where, economically, the only way he benefits from this holdout is if he gets exactly what he demands.

Between holdout penalties and guaranteed bonuses that he will not receive now, this holdout is a success only if the Jets cave.

Not only is this a terrible PR move, but it seems to be just a dumb move all together. Id hope that at the very least the holdout was WORTH it.

    • If Revis is seriously injured this year – that 20m guarantee goes bye bye.

      • avatar Bent says:

Lush – it did anyway. The guarantees don’t apply until they buyback the last two years of the deal in Feb or March.

        What he’s lost is twofold:

        1. 2012 money is no longer guaranteed, so if he’s hurt between March 2011 and September 2012 (career threatening), the Jets are on the hook for none of that 15m (although all he’s really lost is the cost of insuring against that eventuality)

        2. 2011 money is no longer guaranteed, so if there’s a lockout, it might be less likely that he could recover it in court.

        • avatar NJets says:

          Thanks Bent.

Seems theres a lot of money being left on the table. Id add the opportunity cost of this holdout as well. Being “Revis Island” on an elite Jets team that could possibly win the Super Bowl is the best way of ensuring dollar bills.

From what Ive seen this offseason, a bunch of Saints are “guaranteeing” themselves a bunch of money after winning it all. Books, media events, speeches, etc. That should all be considered when making these sorts of PR moves.

Payton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees… they are making their “heavy” money off the field. On the field they are team players. Revis needs to understand that he wasn’t Revis Island to the rest of the country until Rex came in and let him become that.

          • avatar greene says:

F REVIS ISLAND. LET’S GO ALCROTRAZ!

          • avatar Bent says:

Yep. The additional total earning potential of a star player based on a winning team in NY (compared with being on a mediocre team based somewhere like Detroit) is way bigger than the difference between his demands and the Jets highest offer so far. These actions can only hurt him financially in the long run, unless the outcome is that he ends up signing…which pretty much HAS to happen.

      • avatar billvv says:

So, essentially, he want to get paid if he is injured? Get insurance!

    • avatar Bent says:

Pretty much, but the Jets aren’t likely to cave either, so I guess they’ll meet somewhere in the middle.

It definitely sounds like he’s not coming back until he gets a deal of some description, but there is always a chance of a compromise package that can be revisited after the new CBA drops in to firm up guarantees and so on.

      • avatar JetsFan4Life says:

thought I’d read somewhere that offer for a band-aid was around $5M at which Revis was insulted, and in any event best we could do this year was $9M…right?

        • avatar Bent says:

          Depends how you define “band-aid”.

I heard 3m, but Woody/Tannembaum (not sure which) said 4 years was the shortest contract offer they’d given him, so it wasn’t a case of just replacing this year’s salary (which wouldn’t comply with the CBA anyway because the rest of the contract wouldn’t meet the 30% rule.

Yes, 9m is the maximum salary they could give him, but they could give him signing bonus money of any amount. The remainder of the contract would have to comply with all the rules.

  12. avatar WW85 says:

Bent, regarding the guarantees, wouldn’t the Jets just create a new contract for Revis that has them once they agree to terms? The only reason Revis wouldn’t get them is if the Jets agree to nothing.

There are no rules keeping the Jets from re-guaranteeing Revis, are there?

    • avatar Bent says:

Well, they can’t fully guarantee future salaries due to the reallocation rule, but if he does get a new deal, I assume he’ll be wanting upfront guarantees and rolling partial guarantees (ie guaranteed for skill or injury, but not both).

They may be contractually able to restore the guarantees if he doesn’t get a deal, but don’t have to. That’s the risk he’s running, but if he’s deadset on “deal or no season” then the future guarantees are something he doesn’t care about.

  13. avatar AGE says:

To the point about TJ being a better teacher than LT–

Rivers and Gates have both said that training camp this year feels a lot better and more relaxed than last year with LT on the team because LT carried a superstar attitude around on the practice field. Could this be sour grapes? Absolutely. But it also can give us a little insight on how good of a mentor LT could be for Greene. Still nice to hear that Greene, like Sanchez, is really trying to learn from the older guys and get better.

  14. avatar SackDance99 says:

Nice to hear in Rex’s presser that he’s not worried about Folk anymore. With Turner’s aggressiveness, he should be in the LG mix. And LG with a mean streak would be good between cool customers like Mangold and Brick.

    • avatar Bent says:

I really like Turner. He might never be a fulltime starter (although I’m only saying that because he hasn’t played enough to prove that), but for depth and versatility (and reliable special teams play) he’s a roster spot well spent. If I was a GM, I’d definitely look into trying to get him cheaply if he became available.

  15. avatar tyrone says:

on espn and nfl network both sides talked last night and the are keeping the talks confidentail. I believe there will be some good news comming Im still pissed at revis.

  16. avatar C Low says:

I think Santonio Holmes is on my plane right now…..Isn’t he at training camp though??????? I’m serious

  17. avatar SackDance99 says:

Going into the 2009 season, the Jets’ best, and most irreplaceable, defensive player was Kris Jenkins. For most of the 2008 season, Jenkins played like an MVP and was cruising to be a lock for DPOY. His injuries and the Jets slide kept Jenkins from getting his due, but he was truly awesome up through the Titans game. Jenkins got injured during the 2009 season, but the Jets statistically improved with Pouha and DeVito.

I mention this because I think Rex is a defensive genius and even losing Revis would present a problem that Rex would find the solution for. For argument’s sake, let’s say the Jets and Revis cut off all talks and the Jets, instead, sign Schobel. So, instead of pressure coming in blitz packages from the secondary, Rex would have Taylor and Schobel while going cover 1 or 2. I want Revis back, but Rex is a good enough coach and the Jets have more than enough time to compensate for his loss. I’ve said this before, but name the CBs in Buddy Ryan’s ’85 Bears defense. You can’t because the CBs were rarely tested because the 46 put too much pressure on the QB. I think that the CB trio of Cromartie, Wilson and Lowery are much better than any of the Bears’ CBs. Let Revis holdout, the Jets would still lead the NFL in defense.

    • avatar NJets says:

      Well said.

People forget that Revis was virtually unknown outside of this blog until Rex came in and installed a system that allowed him to shine.

When elite players like Randy Moss are pointing out that Revis got help up top, its because its true. Yes Revis is elite, yes he has incredible one on one coverage skills, but yes… he is a product of the system.

The Jets will be just fine with or without him. Obviously we all prefer WITH but one CB wont make the difference between a Super Bowl or Bust season. QB will. Protecting that QB (Mangold) will. We all know the Jets’ priorities.

      • avatar Bent says:

I’m less confident. Having said that, the thought that they could ever overcome the Jenkins injury as they did was just as unthinkable, so maybe you are onto something.

Revis is an incredible player and was also becoming a leader. Everyone moves up one spot on the depth chart. The guys that would play in his place would be great compliments to Revis, but covering number ones might be a step too far. All those “don’t worry, we can handle Marshall/Moss and Welker” type conversations we satisfied ourselves with fall apart with no Revis. And these are teams you have to beat if you have postseason, let alone SB aspirations.

        • avatar Bent says:

Having said that, no team with Superbowl aspirations should have their hopes hinge on one guy, which is why the Jets are clearly trying to upgrade their offense to compete with some of those teams, none of whom have Revis either.

      • avatar billvv says:

Another example was Brady going down. They played well enough without him.
