Link: Andre Johnson’s Contract
In an e-mail conversation last night, I may have inadvertently inspired Jason from nyjetscap.com to investigate the Andre Johnson contract extension in depth and try to establish the impact this might have on contract negotiations between Darrelle Revis and the Jets.
He reached more or less the same conclusion I did, which was that this does little to strengthen the bargaining position of Revis’ team as they reportedly seek a deal where the big money kicks in from the get-go. The ultimate conclusion he arrives at is that the market has been set at the sort of level the Jets are rumored to have been offering already. If Team Revis can accept this and the Jets can be flexible in terms of giving some money upfront (which they said they would this week), then a deal will hopefully come within reach.
Johnson’s deal seems to reinforce a pattern that seems to be developing with long term deals whereby anyone whose rights were controlled for this season or beyond is accepting a deal with a low initial cap number compared to later on in the deal. While some upfront signing bonuses have been paid, these have mostly been small, apart from in the case of Patrick Willis, whose $12m upfront signing bonus was essentially the minimum they could give him and still make his contract 30% rule compliant. Other than Willis, DeMeco Ryans got $7.5m upfront, Andre Johnson got $2.8m and D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Elvis Dumervil and Brandon Marshall basically got nothing. Guarantees in the Johnson deal will also have been affected by the re-allocation rule, which did not affect the Dumervil or Marshall deals (although both deals include an effective get-out clause for the team after the first year). Although Johnson’s average pay was increased (and perhaps justifiably so) from $7m to $10m, most of the increase is made up by incentives and the non-guaranteed money in the two extra years.
Read Jason’s article for the detailed breakdown of Johnson’s deal and how he thinks this affects the market for Revis.

I think Revis and his agents are the only ones not to relise that times have changed, and gone are the 25 mill signing bonuses.
The jets know by giving him a massive amount of up front money, that he will only be back in 4 years whining for more, this is his agents modis operandi
I just can’t beleve the greed and averance of some players under the guise of protecting their family.
He has the chance to be a Icon with the Jets, but the way things are going ur going to be remembered for all the wrong reasons

Two holdouts in the last three years. Now doesn’t want the very contract he held out for in the first place. Doesn’t seem to care that the Jets are bound by the 30% rule, and that he has three years left on his current contract.
I would not be upset if he wound up in Detriot and we wind up with two #1′s.
